Chapter 26
The funeral had passed, and Morgana had received what she hoped was the last condolence she would receive in a long time. Urien wasn't a man that pushed out of his way to make many friends, but those ha had made had showed up to the funeral to grieve the death of a good man. Arthur, Guinevere and Aethel had shown up to give Morgana their condolences. Even some members of important families had appeared to do little more give Morgana a half assed condolence and then depart back to their houses.
In her mind, it would have been better if they hadn't shown up at all.
With the lack of an heir, arrangements were being made so Urien's brother could take over the throne. He claimed that Morgana, as Urien's widow and soon-to-be former queen could stay in the castle for as long as she wanted to, but without Urien, it would no longer feel like a home anymore.
It was strange for Morgana when she had gotten the news of him dying in battle. As such, he was buried in his armor. The man had been as stubborn as few and insisted that although the deal had been that Arthur would aid in protect his kingdom, he considered only a fool would not go and check for himself that the other part remained true to their side of the deal. They had won, but Urien would not return to his castle.
As strange as it might sound to others, Morgana would miss to hear him complain, from his brother being a bore, to the weather, or how on the few occasions when they visited other people -occasions where he would complain about the road- he would mutter to Morgana in hushed whispers as to no offend their hosts that the food in his kingdom was better.
Morgana knelt on the floor, eyes glowing blue as a dark red flame flickered on the carefully arranged candles in her bedroom.
She took a deep breath; a long time had passed since she had done that. Her eyes glowed, one by one the candles turned off and lit up immediately after. A man dressed in the clothes of a king slowly began to take shape until it was the form of a dark-skinned man with a long beard and dark eyes that blinked perplexed when they saw Morgana in front of him, he then looked at his own hands and the room around him that remained unchanged since he had last been there.
"What is this?" he mumbled, barely above a whisper, Morgana shrugged, "Morgana is that you?"
"Of course, I'm your deeply saddened widow, you didn't really think they'd get rid of me that easily did you?" Morgana tried to jock, but the hint of sadness in her voice didn't go amiss by the man, who smiled softly, putting a hand in his chest.
"Thanks to heaven you aren't dead," he exaggerated, even if there was a genuine feeling behind his words, "Don't give me scares like that woman, you know how weak my heart is." Morgana couldn't help the chuckle that erupted form her throat.
"The world already took the loss of a good man, let's not make it an even deeper tragedy." she shrugged, he nodded vehemently.
"How am I here...?" he questioned looking around again, tapping the stone floor with his boots, "sorcery, I suppose?"
"A very special branch of it, made for impatient people like you who can't wait just enough to arrive home and say goodbye to their family," Morgana explained, "I wanted to give you my last goodbye, And listen to you complaining about how unfavorable rides home were to injured men, you... you were a very dear friend," Morgana smiled with sadness, tears at the corners of her eyes.
His previously confused expression softened, he knelt at her level. Remaining close to her, he would not be able to touch her, or go beyond the carefully made circle.
"As were you. If you had been a man, you would have been the only one in my heart," he gave her a half smile, eyebrows knitting together before turning to Morgana with a worried expression, "How is..."
"He's hurt, deeply so," Morgana knew lying to him would be of no use, and Lord Thomas had been visibly distraught during the entire funeral, "I sat down with him for a few moments during your funeral and I told him how much you loved him, it didn't alleviate his pain of course, but I thought he deserved to know."
"He does," he nodded, "thank you"
"I'm going to miss you" Morgana blurted, he tilted his head slightly, "At least I'm going to miss you getting scared every time I appeared in a room,"
At first, his expression was a bit annoyed, but soon a chuckle erupted from his throat.
"Morgana, if I think I'm alone in the garden watching over it and you suddenly appear by my side, you'll have to understand that I'll be a bit startled, but I'm going to miss it a lot and you too, please tell my brother to take good care of my kingdom," he pleaded, despite her eyes being filled with tears, she smiled and nodded. Noticing how the fire of the candles was turning off and very little of it remained.
"I will, if you see anyone by the name Igraine or Gorlois out there could you tell them that I love them very dearly?" Morgana tried, Urien nodded, feeling as if he had been given the most important task that could be asked of anyone.
"I will, being married to you was nothing short of enjoyable, a great wonderful surprise"
"The same goes to you, goodbye dear friend" Morgana's eyes glowed blue and with a small tilt of the head Urien disappeared. The drawing on the floor vanished as did the fire of the candles.
Morgana allowed the tears to fall more freely this time, almost pushing herself to stand up from the floor and sit on the edge of the bed. She didn't know how long she was there, until the sound of a knock on her door caught her attention. Taking a deep breath, she cleaned the tears off her face. She lifted the candles from the floor before opening the door, behind which stood Derek, a guard, with a letter in hand.
Morgana picked the letter with a risen eyebrow, it was written in a haste, she knew it because no matter how sloppy Arthur's handwriting usually was, it never was that uneven. She read through it, from the beginning when an emergency at home forced them to leave at the moment.
Still, he made a point to tell her, that no matter what she chose to do after, she would always be welcomed in Camelot, whether it was as a visit or to stay for as long as she wanted. Once she finished reading it, she left it on her table. Picking a pen, her decision already taken.
She was returning to Camelot.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Couldn't you just cut me some slack? Can't I just oversleep this one time?" Jonathan groaned, passing one hand over the bridge of his nose and rubbing his eyes only to glare at Merlin immediately after. The adult looked around, as if he had noticed where he had dragged himself and the boy for the first time.
Jonathan could almost feel every bit of his spirit still at his bed, resting peacefully. Merlin rose an eyebrow to the teenager, seemingly unfazed by his words, probably due to the fact that something like that was nothing out of the ordinary.
"You should have been wiser to know that if you were no longer in school, we would take the extra time for your training, you should know it's the responsible thing to do and not go to a small party with those kids you will no longer study with," Merlin dismissed, Jonathan rose an eyebrow narrowing his eyes immediately after.
"I'm sixteen, a horse must have kicked you in the head if you seriously expected any responsibility from me."
"I expect responsibility from a young boy with powers that he cannot control. In my time and age, you would be waking up with the sun every day to go to the fields and work to feed your family," Merlin deadpanned. Jonathan took a step back, taking a deep breath that did nothing to calm him down.
"In your time and age life expectancy was twenty-five years and people had ten kids and prayed one would survive because there were no vaccines."
"Listen, boy." Merlin glared, "I trust you'll understand that during this period of vacations you and I will meet every single day to continue your training, you might rest from school, but your training is unavoidable"
Jonathan rose his hands in irritation, "Once I figure out how to teleport, I'm gonna fucking bail to Mexico, maybe Valerie's family will receive me but good luck finding me in a country eight times bigger asshole,"
"I take it you and the young lady are talking again," Merlin rose an eyebrow, Jonathan's expression softened, a slight shade of pink covering his cheeks, eyebrows furrowed.
"Yes," he muttered barely loud enough for Merlin to hear, who looked at the boy with newfound amusement, "What is it to you?" he spat, Merlin scoffed, repressing a laugh.
"Not much, I'm just glad I don't have to see two pitiful pain-stricken faces," he shrugged with a movement of his hand. Jonathan glared at him.
"Fuck off."
"There we go, a regular cursing vocabulary, I hope today you'll apply the same enthusiasm to today's training that you apply in saying the word fuck way more than what it would be necessary in any given day or situation."
"I'm gonna finish this so fucking quickly so I can end with this. Then, you'll see my middle finger while I vanish."
"Would you use the same language in front of the girl?"
Jonathan stood in silence, watching Merlin with knit together eyebrows and mouth slightly open trying to make sense out of what he had heard.
"You're assuming she wouldn't cuss you out with me," he said with certainty, noticing his opportunity, "Besides, would you show the same high and mighty attitude if Morgana was here?" he put a hand in his chest, wrinkling his nose, standing straight.
"Of course not," Merlin shrugged, a slight shade of pink in his lips, "But that's because Morgana's smarter than me, and she knows your parents, if she was around, I'm certain you wouldn't curse the same level."
"That's because I respect miss Morgana, something that doesn't apply to you."
Merlin rose an eyebrow, his lips twitching in a smile that Jonathan noticed.
"So, let's get this done with, what rock are you gonna make me move today?" Jonathan spoke, shifting the toping. The quicker they began, the sooner he would be able to go home and sleep the entire afternoon.
"Nothing like that, today we are focusing on water, with what you do, worst case scenario you freeze the lake, that's a lot easier to undo that explain why there was another earthquake or why a portion of England was suddenly broken apart from the rest" Jonathan tilted his head slightly.
"What if I freeze the ocean?" Jonathan rose an eyebrow; Merlin rolled his eyes.
"I would be very impressed if you managed to do that," he admitted, Jonathan shrugged. "Now, move it," Merlin pointed at the lake in front of them.
Jonathan looked at the lake, following Merlin's finger and then at the adult who remained unfazed, "How the fuck?"
"Figure it out, you managed to make a freezing mess out of your school's cafeteria, moving the water should be of no challenge to you."
"You're basically throwing me into the river so I can learn to swim on my own, aren't you?" Merlin rose a disinterested eyebrow taking a step back, as if he was a presenter giving the stage to the next contestant of a talent show, "If this is you being petty, for someone who was born a long fucking time ago that's incredibly childish of you."
Jonathan's eyes glowed golden, the water shifted briefly, a small fraction of it remained uneasy instead of continuing the rippling pattern. Jonathan took a deep breath closing his eyes for second, a fraction of the water rose in the shape of an unstable sphere that trembled uneasy. He smiled, smug, before it dropped back to the lake.
"Surprising," Merlin's voice resonated, "And the most controlled I've seen you since we started, maybe I should bring you here earlier next time."
Jonathan's eyes glowed golden, the water moving and shifting in Merlin's direction who stopped with the movement of a hand, pushing it back to the lake.
"It'll still take you a while if you think you can do something like that against me,"
"Wanna go?" Jonathan spat, taking a step in his direction. Merlin probably recognized the humor in the boy's words because he smiled.
"It would hardly be a fight worthy of my time," Merlin shrugged, "Now, back to the water, whatever you plan on making next, it needs to hold longer, and as far as I'm concerned there is another state of water you haven't explored yet."
Jonathan rolled his eyes, mimicking the adult's words under his breath before taking a deep breath. His eyes glowing before the water shifted, slowly moving. Jonathan tried to make an arch this time, trying to get some steadiness by keeping the water connected to the lake.
"Jonathan!" a voice called him, and the water dropped to the lake. He glared at Merlin, despite the fact that, as familiar as the voice was, it didn't sound like the adult.
"I told you it needs to..." Merlin prepared to chastise.
"Well, if you need it to stay up longer, don't fucking interrupt me" Jonathan interrupted, glaring at Merlin, his hands still up.
Merlin narrowed his eyes and furrowed his eyebrows.
"I didn't speak to you, at all." He admitted, Jonathan knit his eyebrows together.
"Yes, I swear, I heard someone calling me," Jonathan mumbled.
Merlin sighed, "You should know by now excuses don't work with me, now move the water."
Jonathan took a deep breath, he knelt in the ground, touching the water with the tip of his fingers, feeling it under Merlin's attentive gaze. He stood up to take a step back, eyes glowing golden. The water slowly rose up forming a wall that towered well over both of them. Two familiar faces were drawn in it, startling the boy making him lose his control as the water fell again to the lake, before any of the face could say or do anything.
Jonathan tried to make sense of what he had seen, mouth slightly open eyebrows risen. There were no signs or clues on Audrey or Gabriel's whereabouts, and he did his best to remain informed every single day, whether it was through Valerie or through his classmates to check if any of them knew any changes. So far no one had a single clue beyond the assumptions that were either running away or kidnapped. Neither of their parents had stopped looking for them, asking for anyone who could give any sort of information to please give it to either of them. One night, Jonathan had woken up in a cold sweat, swearing he had heard them speak to him, but he couldn't make much sense of what they were saying.
"Fuck," Jonathan mumbled, eyes focusing on the water before he turned to Merlin who stared at the scene wide eyed. "Do you have any idea what that was?"
"Step back," Merlin muttered, with eyes glowing green the same wall lifted in seconds, no faces this time, or anything abnormal in it. "Try it again," Merlin turned to the boy with hurried eyes
"But..." Jonathan tried, eyes on the ground, as he noticed vines coming out of the water, crawling dangerously close to him and Merlin. He took a step back, but they didn't seem to follow him.
"No buts, do it boy!" Merlin commanded, his voice never before that stern. Jonathan took a deep breath the wall rose up; this time Gabriel and Audrey's faces were clearer and stared at him as if they were as surprised to see him as he was to see them.
"Guys, what are...?" he began, but a loud gasp startled him. The water dropped to the lake, and he turned to see the vines growing thicker and tangling around Merlin who with eyes glowing and a hand pressed against them couldn't do much to stop them.
"Merlin!" Jonathan gasped, watching the vines fuse together to form a trunk to surround the man. He rushed to the scene, pressing a hand against the forming tree. Trying to push their growth to a halt.
Jonathan groaned in frustration, despite his best attempt he barely managed to delay the growth, but he found himself unable to fully stop it. Once he stopped touching them, however, they returned to its usual speed. Jonathan complained, eyes glowing golden, trying to press his hand against it again.
"Run!" Merlin said, looking at the boy with desperation.
"What?"
"Jonathan Run!" he rose his voice, pulling his free hand and pushing the boy that tumbled backwards.
Jonathan stared at Merlin, eyes wide in shock. He took a step in his direction.
"But... Gabriel and Audrey and you...?"
"Fucking kid!" Jonathan swallowed hard, too shocked to respond, "Listen to me and Run! One of us has to get out of here and it clearly won't be me! Now listen to me for one fucking time in your life and run!"
Jonathan took a deep breath, nodding. Barely able to run a few steps, before his eyes glowed golden and he disappeared.
