Ch. 13

Kristoff jumped off the mountain. The men's jaws dropped as he soared through the air. There was no way he was going to survive this. He cracked his whip, leaning back as he let Sven ride down the steep decline. Kristoff was nearly laying on Sven as they chased after the brumbies.

John tilted his head, a faint smile on his face. He was impressed. They were lying when they said Kristoff was good with a horse. He was great.

Sven hopped over a log and was still able to keep up. Kristoff held tightly, his only hope being that Sven wouldn't topple over. He put all of his trust into his horse.

Jackson shook his head, watching the scene unfold. "You can bid the mob good day." He said. The brumbies reached the level ground and kept moving forward. Kristoff stayed on their tails, chasing after them. He wasn't going to let them get away.

The rest of the men slowly made their way back down from the mountain. They were disappointed in themselves. They had only hoped to retrieve the thousand-pound colt and maybe a few extra mares. Not only that but maybe a few pounds for themselves.

"Look!" Eric shouted, pointing toward the mountain. Sure enough, there was Kristoff still chasing after the brumbies.

Kristoff had two goals in his mind as he chased after the brumbies. One was to make his father proud. He raised Kristoff to be a man, a mountainous man. He was going to show everyone that Henry Bjorgman was a great man. The second one was for Anna. If he could show Jackson that he could capture the brumbies, he had to let him have her hand in marriage.

The wind blew against his face as he bobbled on Sven over the rough terrain. He was going to catch the brumbies if it killed him. He pulled his hat down low, trying to keep the sun out of his eyes.

Suddenly, they hit a large patch of snow. The brumbies flew the white chunks everywhere as they stored through it. Kristoff rode after them, cracking his whip. He couldn't help but think of Eugene's advice about the snow.

He rushed to the front of the group, cutting it off. He cracked his whip, showing them who was in charge. The stallion nickered at him. Kristoff stared back at him, cracking his whip a few more times. Sweat ran down his face and back. His hat was soaking wet.

Down below, Eugene was packing up to go. He figured he should leave before Jackson to him to. He would be mad about not having his colt back and from his presence. He didn't want to cause any more trouble.

Anna walked to the gate, meeting her father. She scanned the group the looked at Jackson's face. "Where's Kristoff?" She asked.

Jackson took a deep breath. He wasn't sure what to say.

"Glory be!" Shang shouted, gathering everyone's attention. "Will you look at that!" He exclaimed, pointing up at the mountain.

Sure enough, there was Kristoff leading the brumbies down. He cracked his whip, curving them the way he wanted them to go. He had tamed the wild beasts.

A grin grow on Anna's face as she flew open the gate. She rushed out into the open. All of the men rode their horses to meet him, seeing if there was something they could do to help him. Anna ran behind them, jumping onto the fence was a smile a mile wide. He had returned with the brumbies.

Everyone stared in awe as he led the horses into the open fence. Jackson grabbed his colt from the group and Eugene grabbed Bess and tied her to the fence. John and Eugene couldn't stop the smile from forming on their faces. And to think, just last night he didn't want to ride.

Josh laughed, tipping his hat at Kristoff as he rode around the horses in the fence. He was proud of the man. The other men glared in envy and respect. If only they had the skills Kristoff had. He really proved himself today.

The stallion reared up, whinnying loudly. In response, Kristoff cracked his whip a few times. The stallion lowered himself, realizing he was no longer in control. Kristoff was.

Kristoff looked up, his brown eyes meeting her bright blue ones. She gently bit her lower lip then looked down. She was being silly. After all, Kristoff probably only did this to show to her father that he shouldn't have been fired. It had nothing to do with her.

Elsa watched with a grin. She was proud of Kristoff. Maybe this was enough to prove to Jackson that he was wrong about him. That he could take care of Anna.

Kristoff grabbed Bess from the fence and led her over to Eugene, who was now on his cart. He handed Sven's reins to Eugene and hopped off. He went to the back and tied Bess there.

Anna looked over her shoulder, watching Jackson walk to Kristoff. What could possibly going through his mind? Was he going to thank him? Or was he going to tell them to get off his property that instant?

"Bjorgman," Jackson said, walking to him. Kristoff turned around after he tied up Bess. "I promised a hundred pounds." He said, holding up the money. "It's yours."

Kristoff looked at the money then back at Jackson. He shook his head. "That's not why I rode."

He walked away as Jackson stood there, patting the money in his hands. A scowl formed on his face as he realized what Kristoff really wanted. Anna.

Kristoff hopped onto Sven then looked down at Jackson. "There's a dozen good broodmares in that mob. I'll be back for them." He explained. Now he could start what he and father originally planned to do. It would be a solid business and he wouldn't worry about not having enough to pay the bills.

Then he looked over at Anna. She looked at him then at the ground. Was that all he wanted? A dozen broodmares?

Kristoff looked back at Jackson. "And for whatever else is mine."

"I don't like to repeat myself. She's not for you." Jackson argued. He wasn't going to give Anna away to some mountain boy. She couldn't possibly have a good life up there with him.

"Anna can make up her own mind about that." He defended.

"You've got a long way to go yet, lad." Jackson fired back, waving the money at Kristoff. A long way, ha. Kristoff was never going to have her. Not as long as he was still breathing on this earth.

"He's not a lad, Brother," Eugene said, turning around to look at Jackson. "He's a man." He declared. He clicked the reins then was off, pulling Bess behind him. He snapped his head around. "He's a man!" He repeated.

John watched as Jackson stormed off. "The man from Snowy River." He softly muttered to himself.

Kristoff stared as Jackson walked up to Anna. He wrapped his arm around her back, showing that he wasn't backing down. Anna looked up at him, staring at his dirt covered face. How could anyone say that he wasn't a man?

Seeing that Jackson wasn't going to give her up anytime soon, he turned and followed Eugene. The men blocking his way quickly parted. They were in the presence of a legend.

As Kristoff trotted away, Anna brushed away from Jackson. He watched her follow after him. Even Jackson could clearly see how much she loved the man from Snowy River. He walked back to the house, only to meet Elsa. She gave him a grin, signaling she also knew.

Kristoff turned around, giving the property one last look. Then his eyes landed on her.

She smiled, giving him a gentle wave. She knew as well him that they'd meet again. They'd run away if it meant they could be together. But today was not the day. Someday, in the near future.

He smiled and tipped his hat at her, making her laugh.

Then he turned around, racing back up the mountain. She smiled, watching him leave.

He plowed up the mountain, his heart filled with joy. When he finally came into the clearing he and Sven spun. "Woo-hoo!" He cheered as he bolted to his house. No one could say that he hadn't proved himself worthy of living up here yet. He was finally home again in the mountains.
