The Making of…
Chapter 56
Making it Work
“Great work today guys!” Peter smiled as we traipsed off set after another day of filming. “Now remember, this is our last week of principal photography, so it might be time to start clearing out your trailers. They’re getting towed away at the end of the week, so if you’ve lost any pairs of socks under the bed you should go looking for them!”
I smiled at his weak joke and nodded as we headed back to the makeup bus to get changed. My suitcase was already sitting on my bed, but it was empty. I’d tried to start packing, but I couldn’t seem to bring myself to. I couldn’t seem to bring myself to accept that this was almost over.
Filming had ended early in the afternoon for us, and I should have been using the free time to clear out my trailer, but instead I was sitting at the end of the bed with my head buried in my hands, trying to stop the tears that threatened to start running down my cheeks at any moment. Viggo wasn’t around. He was meeting Uraeus and Kenny’s owners to discuss buying them. I was glad he was out; I didn’t want him to see me like this. I bit my lip and looked up, my eyes travelling around the trailer that had been my home for the past eighteen months. Things were easy here, when Viggo’s trailer was always parked just next door, and we could see each other whenever we wanted. I knew things were about to get very difficult when it came to our relationship. How were we going to be able to stay together when we lived on opposite sides of the world?
My thought track was abruptly cut off as the door to my trailer burst open and Raven Rylee and Erin practically fell through the door.
“Does nobody knock anymore?” I asked, running a hand through my hair as they picked themselves up and walked over to me.
“We figured you needed a little girl time.” Rylee smiled as Raven plonked herself down on the bed beside me.
“We brought ice cream.” She grinned.
“Uh…” I mumbled, a little startled by their sudden appearance. Erin had already located my cutlery drawer and had brought over spoons. She handed me one and then opened a massive tub of chocolate ice cream.
“Ok, so what’s been getting you down?” She asked, sitting on the floor in front of me beside Rylee.
“It really doesn’t matter…” I sighed, absentmindedly twirling my spoon in my fingers.
“It really does.” Raven cut in, “You’ve been moping all week – is it because filming is almost over?”
“I suppose it’s partly that…” I admitted as Erin held out the tub of ice cream and I dug my spoon in.
“Well what else is it?” She asked.
“Nothing.”
“Ki.” The brunette looked at me sternly and I sighed.
“I’m… I’m worried about me and Viggo.” I mumbled.
“Why? I thought everything was great between you two?” Rylee cried.
“It is Rye… It’s just… When this is all over, we’re both going to go home, but encase you haven’t noticed, we don’t live anywhere near each other.”
“So? It’s the same problem with me and Sean.” Raven shrugged.
“Same with Dom and me.” Erin added, “Rye has it easy because both she and Karl live in Wellington.”
“I suppose…” I said quietly, thoughtfully licking the ice cream off my spoon. “How are you guys solving the problem?”
“Going with them.” Raven and Erin answered simultaneously, and then laughed.
“Well, Sean asked me to move in with him, so I’ll be going back to England with him.” Raven gushed happily.
“And I’m going to live with Dom for a few weeks, and then we’ll decide on something more permanent after that.” Erin shrugged.
“So, are you going to go back to America with Viggo?” Rylee asked and I shook my head.
“I’d love too… I honestly would. But I couldn’t leave my family like that. It was hard enough leaving them to come here.” I sighed.
“Well then, why doesn’t Vig go live with you?” She smiled.
“Do you really think he’d leave Henry for me?” I asked sarcastically, raising an eyebrow.
“That sucks.” Raven muttered.
“It totally sucks.” I laughed weakly, going back for another spoonful of ice cream.
I talked with the girls for well over an hour before the ice cream ran out and Rylee had to leave because Karl was taking her out. Erin and Raven left soon after that, and then I was on my own again. I still seemed to be going around in circles when it came to the living arrangements problem. I decided that I needed to clear my head, and the best way I could think of to do it was to go for a run. I went and changed into a pair of dark leggings and a lilac t-shirt and then pulled on my running shoes. I scribbled a quick note for Viggo and stuck it to the trailer door as I left. I pulled my hair up into a messy ponytail before setting off towards the woods. The woods weren’t exactly a forest, it was more so a loose group of trees that had a circumference of about two miles, and was around half a mile from the studio. I jogged one lap of the circuit, and once I’d reached my starting point I looked back. I could see the studios from here, but I couldn’t see the car park, and therefore couldn’t see if Vig was back or not. I didn’t really want to go back anyway, so I set off for another lap. As I ran along the road that looped around the trees, dark, thick clouds covered the sun, and I looked up to see that the entire sky was made up of varying shades of grey. I knew what this meant – a flash-storm was coming. I thought about turning back, but decided against it and instead pressed on. It only took about five minutes for the rain to hit. Massive, heavy droplets fell at an alarming rate, stinging my skin as they hit me and plastering my hair to my head. The dirt track beneath my feet was swiftly turning into a muddy river, but still I ran on as thunder rumbled behind me. Flash-storms were normally over quickly anyway. My footfalls caused large splashes as I tried to avoid the bigger puddles, but in my haste to get back, I didn’t notice a pothole until I was already ankle-deep in it. I stumbled but didn’t fall, although I felt my ankle twist uncomfortably. I stopped and tested putting my weight on it, and almost fell as pain shot up my leg. That seemed to be the breaking point for me, and tears began to run down my face, mingling with the droplets of rain. I hopped unsteadily over to the nearest tree, leaning against it as I rubbed my ankle and tried to stop the flow of tears. I knew it was stupid to shelter under a tree during a storm, but I didn’t really care. Everything seemed to be crashing down around my ears, making me irrational and panicky – which was probably why I jumped as I heard a car pull up behind me.
“Kira?” I didn’t register who the voice belonged to until I heard the slam of a car door. “Ki, get in the car, you’re getting soaked!” Viggo called, and I heard his feet splashing against the road as he ran to me. “Ki, what’s wrong?” He asked, lightly touching my shoulder as I tested my ankle. The physical pain wasn’t as bad any more, but the tears wouldn’t stop. I turned to look at him and instantly felt guilty as I saw the rain seeping into his clothes and soaking him.
“Vig…” I whimpered, and suddenly I was in his arms. I buried my head against his chest as he held me.
“What’s the matter?” He whispered over the sounds of the storm.
“What are we going to do Vig?” I sobbed.
“What do you mean Ki?” He asked, pulling away and holding me at arms length.
“How are we going to be able to stay together when this is all over?” I asked shakily.
“I… I don’t know.” He admitted quietly, his hands gently cupping my face as a mixture of salty tears and fresh rainwater ran down my cheeks. My heart fell as he said those words. I’d been hoping that he would have a solution. Something that would make it all better. I sniffed and took an unsteady breath.
“Well if that’s the case… Maybe it would be better if we just broke-”
“Kira don’t say it, please don’t say it.” Viggo begged, cutting me off as I tried to pull away from him.
“But Vig-”
“Don’t Kira!” He cried, pulling me back to him and leaning his forehead against mine. I looked deep into his eyes and shock shot through me as I realised that tears were pooling there. “I love you Kira. I love so much. Please… Don’t say that.” He whispered as my body shook with sobs. “I need you in my life; I couldn’t bear it if you left.”
“I love you too Viggo.” I sighed, closing my eyes in an attempt to stop the tears flowing. I felt his soaked lips against mine, forming a gentle, sweet kiss, before he pulled back.
“I don’t care what we have to do to stay together Ki… I’d do anything to keep you in my life.” He murmured, “I’ll fight to keep you with me, I’ll do whatever it takes… Just please stay with me.” His voice dropped to an inaudible whisper as I flung my arms around his neck.
“I’ll always stay.” I assured him, “I need you too, I love you too, and I’d do anything to keep you too.” I whispered in his ear, “I didn’t mean what I said… I’m so sorry Vig. I love you.” I squeezed my eyes shut as he wrapped his arms around me and held our rain-soaked bodies together. My hands tangled in his dripping hair as I held him closer. I didn’t want to let go. Not now, not ever.
“We’ll make it work Ki, I promise. Whatever it takes.” He assured, me, gently rubbing my back as he held me. I felt him bury his face between my shoulder and neck and the realisation hit me that I’d never before seen him so venerable. I held him tighter, breathing in his familiar, comforting, safe smell. He smelt amazing in the rain.
I don’t know how long we stood like that for, but it was long enough for the storm to pass over. He carefully loosened his grip on me, but didn’t fully let go as he pulled back and looked at me. I reached up and swept back the strands of saturated hair that had fallen in front of his eyes as a faint smile crossed his perfect lips. I smiled back as he took my hands in his and squeezed them. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily, Forest.” He joked and I laughed weakly. He released one of my hands and gently pulled me over to his car. I reluctantly let go of him as we went to our separate doors and I climbed in the passenger side. My ankle throbbed a little, but I took no notice of it as Viggo sat beside me and smiled. He reached behind him and grabbed one of his jackets from the back seat, and placed it over my shoulders and I smiled gratefully.
“So, um… How did the meeting go?” I asked as he started the engine.
“Great,” He smiled, “Everything’s sorted, I’m getting them both.” He glanced away from the road and looked at me for a second. “And, em… Ki?”
“Yeah?”
“Look in the glove compartment for me, will you?”
“Sure.” I mumbled, opening the small compartment.
“You see the envelope?”
“Uh huh.”
“Open it.” He smiled, turning back to the road as I picked up the small white envelope and ran my finger under the edge curiously.
“Ouch.” I muttered as the surprisingly sharp edge sliced my finger and blood swelled out of the shallow cut. I quickly jammed my finger in my mouth and sucked on it. “Bloody paper cut.” I muttered as Viggo laughed. I took my finger out of my mouth and examined the stinging cut. Vig reached across and took my hand, gently kissing my finger and smiling.
“Now will you open it?” He asked as I looked back down at the envelope. I opened it carefully and pulled out the pale pink papers inside with official-looking data and signatures printed all over them.
“What are these?” I asked in confusion.
“Ownership papers.” He replied.
“For what?” I frowned, still not understanding.
“Look closer dimwit.” He laughed as I picked up the first page and my eyes widened as realisation hit me.
“Vig, stop the car.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want you to crash whilst I’m kissing you.”
“Fair enough.” He grinned, checking the road was deserted before hitting the brakes. I grabbed his face in my hands and pulled his lips down to meet mine – being careful not to crease the documents that now claimed I was the official owner of Indy.
“You are too amazing.” I gasped against his lips as he kissed me back.
“Well, I try.” He smirked, his hands reaching up and undoing my ponytail so his fingers could tangle in my damp hair as his lips recaptured mine. We probably would have gotten carried away, had a car horn not distracted us and Viggo looked up to see a car behind us, waiting for us to move. “Oops.” He grinned sheepishly, releasing me as he started the car again and we pulled off, heading back to the studio.
