The Making of…

Chapter 49

Love You Mostest

I climbed out of the tent dressed in a dry turquoise t-shirt and washed out blue denim shorts with one of Viggo’s navy shirts thrown over the top. I towelled my damp hair vigorously before hanging the towel over one of the tent’s guy-ropes to dry. As an afterthought I reached back in and grabbed my cowboy hat – setting it on my head with a smile as I went to find the others. As I spotted them, I was suddenly glad I’d brought my hat – Team Cowboy seemed to have expanded to include Miranda and Bernard. It must be a Rohirrim thing. Most people were sitting in a circle around what appeared to be a campfire-barbeque hybrid that most of the men seemed to be poking with sticks.

“What is it with men and fire?” I grinned, sitting cross-legged beside Rylee.

“What is it with you guys and those hats?” She asked with a smile as I laughed.

“I have no idea – you should get a hat though. Everyone needs a hat.”

“Hats don’t suit me.” Raven retorted from across the circle.

“These hats would!” I argued.

“Then let me try yours on.”

“No! My hat!” I cried, clamping it defensively to my head as Viggo appeared and was swiftly accompanied by the reek of fish. “Ew, where have you been?” I asked.

“Gutting the fish.”

Ew! Gross!” I shuddered and wrinkled my nose.

“Yep, I had blood all over my hands, wanna see?” He grinned, advancing upon me as I shrieked and scooted backwards.

“No!” I cried, even though I could see that his hands were clean – he only laughed and went over to the fire where a frying pan was sitting and started preparing the fish. “What’s the alternative to fish?” I asked.

“We have regular barbeque food.” Orlando replied, jabbing at the fire in fascination like a rebellious schoolboy.

“You don’t like fish?” Karl exclaimed as I shook my head.

“Nah… It’s too… Fishy.” I mumbled, grimacing a little as the smell of the cooking fish hit my nose.

“She doesn’t like it because she’s never tried my fish.” Viggo boasted from where he was sitting with his hissing frying pan extended across the crackling fire.

“Really? You seem pretty confident.” I snorted.

“I am.”

“I’m not eating fish.”

“Stubborn.”

“Yes I am.” I stuck my tongue out at him. I knew it was childish to refuse to try something new… But I wasn’texactly new to fish… I was set in my ways anyway.

“How about I make you a bet, huh?” Viggo asked and I raised an eyebrow.

“The stakes?”

“You try the fish, and if you like it you have to eat a whole portion.” He grinned.

“And if I don’t like it?”

“Well I can’t imagine why you wouldn't, but if I make you try it and you don’t like it… You can throw me in the lake.” He looked at me expectantly as I smirked.

“Alright, you’re on.” I nodded, “Bring on the fish.”

I waited patiently for Viggo to finish cooking, but with each passing second I was beginning to regret entering into the bet.

“It’s ready!” He sang cheerfully, dishing out the flaky white meat and passing the plates around the circle. I was already sitting quite happily with a half-eaten hotdog in my hand, and had quite frankly no intention of eating anything else. “Alright Ki, it’s the moment of truth.” Viggo grinned, holding out a plastic plate for me, but I shook my head.

“I’ve changed my mind.”

“You can’t back out of this one.”

“Watch me.” I retorted.

“Come on, you promised!” He smiled, waving the plate under my nose as the smell flooded my senses. It certainly smelt better than it had done earlier… But I wasn’t going to admit to that.

“Uh… I can’t… I turned vegetarian.” I mumbled.

“You’re holding a hotdog.”

“Shoot… I forgot about that.” I sighed, biting my lower lip as Viggo sat down next so me.

“Look it’s easy you just open your mouth and-” He held a forkful out for me, but I clamped my lips shut and shook my head. “Kira,” He whispered softly in my ear, “Please?” Again I shook my head and he sighed, I thought he was giving up, but then he pinched my nose – cutting off my air supply. “You’ll have to open your mouth sometime.” He smirked as my eyes widened and I panicked a little, before my faithful intelligence kicked in and I started very pointedly breathing out of the corner of my mouth. “I was hoping that you wouldn’t figure that one out…” He muttered, releasing my nose as I smirked triumphantly. “Ok, I give up; you don’t have to eat it.”

“Yay.” I grinned as he set the fork down, and suddenly he lightly kissed my cheek. I turned to him in surprise and he moved forwards to kiss me. I closed my eyes and parted my lips expectantly – it was almost becoming a reflex – but instead of feeling Viggo’s warm lips against mine, I felt something being pushed past my lips. Something unmistakably fishy. “Oh you diabolical little-” I growled angrily as he cupped my jaw in his hand.

“Chew, then talk.” He smiled as I glared at him and slowly chewed on the piece of fish. I almost felt violated after that ordeal. “So, how is it?” He asked.

“S’alright.” I muttered stubbornly, still chewing as I was reluctant to swallow. He leant forward and brushed my hair back so he could kiss my neck as I blushed. “Stop trying to make me subconsciously relate the fish to you kissing me and therefore subconsciously thinking it’s a good experience, because it’s not going to work.” I scowled.

“Alright,” He sighed, pulling back with a reluctant smile, “So, do you like it?”

“It’s ok.” I shrugged after swallowing.

“So you’ll have no protests about eating more?”

“I didn’t say that…” I muttered.

“Well you’re certainly not throwing me in the lake.” He grinned.

“I believe I have every right to.” I said smugly.

“No you don’t.”

“Yes I do.”

“Don’t.”

Do!” I cried, lunging at him, but he’d already stood up and was sprinting away. I scrambled to my feet and dashed after him. I caught up quickly and wrapped my arms around his waist.

“Do you honestly think you’ll be able to physically throw me in?” He laughed.

“I can damn well try!” I insisted, hanging on to him tightly as he attempted to free himself. I reached up and grabbed his shoulders - climbing onto his back and firmly clamping my arms and legs around him.

“What the? Get thee away woman!” He cried, spinning around in an attempt to throw me off – it didn’t work, but both our hats fell off.

“‘Get thee away’? What era are you living in?” I laughed, clinging to him stubbornly as my hair flew wildly around my face.

“Get down!”

“Never!” I grinned as he stopped spinning.

“How about a compromise?”

“Excuse me?”

“You don’t have to eat the fish, and I don’t end up in the lake – Deal?”

“Alright, deal.” I sighed, relaxing my grip on him and gently kissing his neck. In a sudden movement he had reached back to me and somehow – though some marvel of Viggo’s own magical brand of physics – I suddenly found myself cradled in his arms. “How the? What? How did you…?” I stammered as he laughed.

“You’re lighter than you think.” He smiled, softly pressing his lips against mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck as I kissed him back and I thought I might have heard someone wolf-whistle – probably Orlando. I laughed a little as I pulled back.

“You can put me down now.”

“I have no intention of doing anything of the sort.” He grinned, holding me tighter as I tried to squirm away.

“Please?” I whimpered, tugging on the collar of his shirt and sticking out my bottom lip as he laughed and set me down. I caught his hand in mine and laced my fingers through his as he bent down and picked up our hats. He dusted mine down before setting it on my head at a slight tilt and then replacing his. He looked me up and down and smiled.

“Why is it that you have an entire wardrobe full of clothes, yet you still steal my shirts and manage to look utterly adorable in them?” He asked, brushing my hair behind one ear. I blushed and smiled as he squeezed my hand and began leading me back towards the campfire. He sat down once we’d rejoined the circle and pulled me down onto his lap, winding his arms around me and burying his face in my hair. “I probably smell like lake water.” I laughed.

“You smell like Kira.” He corrected me softly.

“Uh, not meaning to break up the magical moment guys, but could Kira get her guitar out?” Orlando asked and I rolled my eyes.

“Do I have to?” I sighed, leaning back against Viggo.

“Yes.” He argued and I blew a raspberry at him.

“Alright Elf-Boy, I’m going…” I muttered, scrambling to my feet and wandering towards the tent. I reached in and grabbed my guitar before turning back to the campfire. The sun was already pretty low in the sky as I made my way back over to my seat. Viggo had shifted up a few places to talk to Karl, leaving me between Orlando and Rylee. I mindlessly tuned my guitar until I began to hit the right notes. I happened to look up and see Viggo and Karl in deep conversation. There was something about the secretive tilt of their hats that almost made me laugh out loud. “Psst, Rye?” I whispered, leaning over to her.

“Yeah?”

“Is it just me or do those two look very…?”

“I was just thinking the same thing.” She grinned as the objects of our discussion looked up.

“Huh?” Karl asked.

“Oh nothing… Cough, Brokeback Mountain, cough.” I smiled sweetly, causing Rylee to erupt in a fit of giggles.

“Don’t make fun of me!” He wailed childishly as Rylee stood and walked over to him so she could wrap her arms around his neck.

“Man up.” She laughed, hugging him tightly as Viggo shifted back over to me.

“Any requests?” I asked.

“Play something we know!” Orlando cried.

“Well that’s specific…” I muttered as I started strumming, until I hit a chord that reminded me of a song, so I changed my strumming technique until I was playing the familiar introduction. I could tell that a few people had already recognised the song before I even started singing. “Well you done, done me and you bet I felt it, I tried to be chill, but you’re so hot that I melted, I fell right through the cracks, now I’m tryin’ to get back…” I sang along with everyone else and I felt Viggo wind his arm around my waist as we reached the chorus. “But I won’t hesitate no more, no more, it cannot wait, I’m yours!” I smiled up at him and then glanced around the circle at everyone, my smile growing even wider as the song finished and Orlando cheered and whooped – urging everyone else to join in. I laughed as Viggo kissed my cheek and then leant close to my ear.

“I’m yours.” He whispered as I blushed and would have responded, if Orlando had not called for another song.

A few songs later, I stood and stretched, holding my guitar out.

“Right, I’m tired, who wants it?” I asked.

“Rye plays!” Karl cried before Rylee could clamp her hand over his mouth.

“I don’t play well.” She insisted as I handed the guitar over to her.

“Knock yourself out.” I grinned, “Not literally though – that might hurt.” As I moved back to my spot, Viggo stood and held his hand out for me.

“Want to go for a walk?” He asked as I linked my fingers through his.

“Sure.” I smiled as he led me away from the warm fire. We walked down towards the lake shore as the sun sank lower in the sky. I stopped to watch it and Viggo pulled me down onto the grassy slope, allowing me to sit on his lap. “Do you remember the last time we watched the sunset together?” I murmured.

“Yeah, on the jetty that evening after filming in the boats.” He smiled, staring out at the mountains that lined the horizon. “I wasn’t watching it though, I couldn’t stop staring at you – I thought you looked beautiful.” He whispered softly, wrapping his arms around my waist as I blushed and laughed a little.

“So that’s why you were staring, I couldn’t figure it out.” I bit my lip and leant back against him.

“I could hardly figure it out either; why I couldn’t look away from you. I don’t think it was long after that before I started falling for you.” He sighed, lifting one hand to remove my hat so he could run his fingers through my hair. I could only gaze out at the fading fire of the sun as it slipped away.

“I don’t think I can pinpoint when I started falling… It just kind of happened.” I said quietly, shivering a little as the chill of the night set in. Viggo wrapped his arms around me a little tighter and I curled up against his chest – forcing him to lie back on the grassy slope. As I lay in his arms I absentmindedly traced random patterns on the front of his shirt until he lightly kissed the top of my head.

“Love you.” He whispered.

“Love you more.” I retorted.

“Love you most.” He grinned as I frowned.

“Love you… Mostest?” I mumbled as he laughed and held me tighter, although I still shivered a little.

“Do you want to go back to the fire?” He asked softly, but I shook my head.

“I think I’ll just go grab a blanket.” I replied, hopping to my feet, “I’ll be back in a moment.” I smiled as I jogged back to the tent. As I ducked under the canvas, it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to the dim light. I searched blindly for a moment, before remembering that I hadn’t unpacked the blanket from the car yet. I sighed and grabbed the next best thing – my sleeping bag. I bundled it up under one arm before leaving the tent and returning to where Viggo was. I found him lying on his back staring up at the sky.

“The stars are out.” He murmured as I kicked off my flip-flops and laid the sleeping bag down beside him. He sat up a little as I crawled into it. “I thought you were getting a blanket so we could share.” He smirked.

“Couldn’t find one.” I shrugged, “We can still share though – just take your boots off.”

“Alright,” He grinned, pulling off his walking boots and slipping into the small space with me. There was barely enough room to move, but I didn’t mind. His body heat quickly warmed me as I lay on his chest and reached up to lightly knock his hat off his head. “Hey…” He protested softly, wrapping his arms around me, but I didn’t give him a chance to say anything else as I pressed my lips against his. At first I’d been somewhat in control of the kiss, but the second Viggo’s arms tightened their hold on me as he kissed me back I was reduced to a puddle of jelly – like when it hasn’t quite set and you take it out of the fridge too early. I don’t know how he managed it in the cramped space of the sleeping bag, but somehow he was lying on top of me as my arms wound around his neck. I smiled against his lips as we rolled over – his arms forming a protective cage around me so I didn’t get squashed. Again I found myself on my back beneath him but I could feel something digging into my spine.

“Ouch…” I gasped, my lips breaking away from his.

“Oh God, sorry, did I hurt you?” Viggo fretted instantly, causing me to burst out laughing.

“No!” I giggled, “I think there’s a rock underneath me!” He started laughing too and rolled over so I was once again lying safely on his chest. I lightly kissed him once I’d gotten over my hysterics and then curled my arms around him as we lay staring up at the sky. Behind us I could hear the others saying goodnight as they made their way back to their tents.

“Hey, are you two staying out?” Bernard called down the hill.

“Yeah, we’ll be in soon.” Viggo replied with a smile.

“Suit yourselves, just don’t be getting up to anything too noisy – tent walls aren’t thick!” He joked as I rolled my eyes and rested my head on Viggo’s chest.

“Goodnight Bernard!” Vig called.

“Night guys!” I shouted over my shoulder – I was answered by various ‘Goodnight’s from every tent. I smiled and cuddled up to Viggo’s warm body as I glanced back up at the stars. “I wonder how many stars are up there?” I mused quietly.

“Millions and millions.” Viggo whispered in my ear.

“I hardly know any of the constellations…” I sighed, “I know that one is Orion.” I pointed up at the sky, “Because of the belt and stuff… And that’s The Milky Way…” I shifted my finger to point at the splash of silver that streaked across the blackness. “But that’s about it… Oh! And that’s the moon!” I grinned, “But it doesn’t count.”

“Well…” Viggo murmured, his hand reaching up and closing around mine as he moved it slightly. “Over there is the North Star.”

“I know that one… I just can never find it.” I mumbled as he moved my hand again.

“And over there is The Plough.”

“Is that a satellite over there?”

“Yeah, I think so.” He smiled. “And look, you see the big one that’s flickering? That’s Mars.”

“Are we planet-spotting now?” I grinned pulling our entwined hands down and lightly kissing the back of his.

“If you like.” He whispered, lifting our hands again to point out more constellations as I began to become drowsy. Viggo seemed to sense this and allowed my hand to slip out of his as he continued to point out the stars that were becoming blurry to me. At some point, my heavy eyelids drooped and I nestled closer to his chest. He kept on murmuring softly to me as I yawned, and I think some time after that, I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

[Long chapter! Although I think it was mostly bulked up by dialogue! Yeah that was me showing off my mad astronomy skills back there… Not. I couldn’t point out the North Star to save my life! Hope you liked this chapter!  I finished it in a rush as I like stayed up all night writing the chapters..So I going to go hit the hay or whatever or however you say it. lol.
