The Making of…

Chapter 43

Dangerous Toasters

I hadn’t closed my curtains last night. That was probably why I was woken up by the bright morning sunlight. I yawned and rolled over so my face was resting on the cool part of the pillow – although I moved back to my original position once I realised that the button of my jeans was digging into my stomach. Wait… My jeans? I must have fallen asleep in them last night. I sat up and tousled my hair sleepily, staring down at the clothes I had been wearing yesterday.

Yesterday… My brain rifled through the events of the previous evening – like it was shuffling though a pack of cards filled with my memories – and I smiled. I must have dozed off in the early hours of the morning, after Viggo and I had stayed up late talking. Reaching over to my bedside table, I picked up my phone and dialled the familiar number, pressing the receiver to my ear as I kicked the duvet off my legs.

“Good morning Sleeping Beauty.” Viggo’s cheerful voice answered after only two rings.

“Mornin’” I smiled, “Quick question; where are you?”

“My trailer.” He answered as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“Why are you there?”

“Because this is kind of where I live.” I could hear the smile in his voice as I hopped out of bed.

Yeah, I know that, my point is why aren’t you here?” I asked, holding the phone to my ear with my shoulder as I made my bed.

“Because I don’t live in your trailer.”

“Don’t be a smart ass.” I scolded him.

“Well, you fell asleep last night – like always – so I went back to my trailer.” He explained, and I thought I could hear him pouring cereal into a bowl in the background.

“You could have stayed.” I told him as I jammed a couple of pieces of bread into the toaster.

“I didn’t want to overstay my welcome.” His simple reply made me smile a little as I raided the fridge and pulled out a carton of orange juice.

“As if you could.” I smirked.

“I sense that you’re not pleased with the fact that I’m not there making you breakfast – am I right?” He said in a laughing tone as I rolled my eyes.

“Yes, I’m scared of the toaster, please come save me.” I replied sarcastically, switching the phone to my other ear as I poured myself a glass of juice.

“You want me to come over and I’m not even changed.” He muttered.

“Do you really think I mind?”

“No, but other people walking past might.” He sighed as I stuck out my lower lip – making a show even though he wasn’t standing in front of me. “Tell the toaster I’ll be over in a few minutes.”

“It’s ok, I think I killed it.” I grumbled as the substance- previously-known-as-bread-but-was-now-toast popped out of the toaster whilst Viggo laughed.

“See you in a bit.” He said, “Love you.”

“Love you too.” I smiled – all hints of joking gone from my voice as my heart fluttered a little. The line went dead and I tossed my phone onto the sofa as I buttered a piece of toast and jammed it into my mouth, holding it in my teeth as I went to turn on the shower. I was glad we had today off – I wasn’t sure if I’d have been able to concentrate on filming right now!

I washed and changed quickly, and was in the middle of drying my hair as Viggo walked through the door, dressed in a clean pair of jeans, white t-shirt with a flannel shirt thrown over the top – almost matching my denim shorts, white vest and lilac-checked shirt combination.

“My fashion sense is rubbing off on you.” I commented with a smile as I shut off my hairdryer and tousled my half-damp hair as I peered at my reflection in the mirror. I saw Viggo’s refection as he walked up behind me, but I was still a little surprised when he wrapped his arms around my middle and kissed my cheek from behind.

“Maybe, but you look infinitely better than I do.” He mumbled into my hair as I blushed – I wasn’t used to him talking to me like this, but I supposed that now our feelings were out in the open, we could say things like that, and be honest with each other. I turned in his arms and wrapped my own arms around his neck.

“You’re probably biased though.” I argued for the sake of arguing as he smiled gently at me, leaning forwards to brush his lips against mine. My lips parted expectantly as I closed my eyes and he pulled me closer, deepening the kiss. My heart did a weird little jumpy thing in my chest – like it seemed to do any time Viggo was close to me like this. It came as less of a shock though. It wasn’t that he was losing his affect on me; I was just becoming more accustomed to dealing with my feelings. He pulled back slightly and I opened my eyes to see him smiling down at me.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this.” He murmured.

“Get used to what?” I asked frowning slightly.

This. You… Us.” He shrugged, “I never would have dreamed that you felt anything for me, or that I’d ever be able to be with you like this.” He smiled as I absentmindedly smoothed his hair that I had accidentally ruffled whilst kissing him.

“It’s stupid to think that I was in exactly the same position.” I sighed, “Although I thought that I was terrible at hiding my feelings, and that you’d end up figuring it out.”

“That’s what I thought too.” He laughed, “I was sure you’d catch on to me, but you know what they say; Love is blind.” His tone became gentle as he leant his forehead against mine.

“I always thought that saying referred to you being blind to the faults of the person you love.” I mumbled.

“I see it as referring to an overall blindness.” Viggo smiled, and moved forward to kiss me again when my phone rang in my pocket.

“Damn…” I whispered against his lips, before untangling myself from his arms and answering the phone. “Hello?”

“Hey Ki!” Raven’s cheerful voice called down the phone as I smiled.

“Hi Raven, what’s up?” I asked as Viggo ran his fingers through my hair and I blushed madly, turning away slightly so he wouldn’t distract me.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to come round and see the apartment-”

“Apartment?” I interrupted her as Viggo wound his arms around me from behind.

“Yeah, remember? I’m renting an apartment now. I told you this days ago Ki!” She sighed in exasperation as I futilely tried to ignore Viggo.

“Um… Sorry, I’ve kind of been out of it for the past few days.” I apologised, scowling at Viggo as he leant over my shoulder.

“You’re telling me – you sounded like a zombie on the phone.” She sighed, “Anyway, do you want to come round? Sean and I haven’t seen you in ages!”

“Sean’s there?” I frowned.

“Yeah… He, uh… Kind of unofficially lives here too…” She mumbled as I laughed.

“You two are seriously adorable.” I grinned, and then jumped in surprise as I felt Viggo kiss my neck. “Stop it.” I hissed as he smiled against my skin.

“No.” He smirked as I rolled my eyes.

“Is someone else there?” Raven asked.

“Uh…”

“Yes.” Viggo answered for me – I didn’t realise that he’d been listening in on the conversation.

“Viggo?”

“Yeah it’s Viggo.” I cut back into the conversation, trying to squirm out of his arms but he held me tightly.

“How are things going with you two?” She asked, “I got the feeling things weren’t going well when you kind of shut yourself away for a few days.”

“Oh… Well, things are good.” I smiled.

“Good?” Viggo questioned, “I was under the impression that things were really quite excellent.”

“Wait… Are you two…?” Raven trailed off as I smiled.

“Yeah. Yeah we are.” I couldn’t help laughing as she screamed with delight.

“You are? How? When? How?”

“Erm… It just kinda… Happened.” I shrugged.

“You could say that.” Viggo laughed, squeezing me and making me squeak in surprise.

“Vig, I need to breathe.” I muttered, causing him to relax his grip, but he still held me gently. I was surprised when I turned my attention back to my phone, to hear Raven screaming.

“Sean? Sean? Sean!” She yelled.

“What?” He answered faintly as if he was in another room, “Stop screaming at me, what did I do?”

“Kira and Viggo!” She cried, ignoring his question as Viggo and I laughed.

“What about them?” He asked, his voice was louder this time, as if he was standing close to the phone.

“You know how Kira was like, madly in love with Viggo?”

“No. When did this happen? Nobody tells me anything…” He grumbled as Viggo kissed my cheek.

“Madly in love, huh?” He murmured in my ear so Raven and Sean wouldn’t hear.

“I don’t think I ever used those precise words…” I bit my lip as he smiled and Raven continued talking.

“Well, it seems like Viggo was in love with her too and now they’re together!” She cried happily, as if expecting Sean to start jumping up and down with excitement – I don’t think he did.

“Oh… Well I knew about Viggo.” Was all he had to say in reply.

You knew and you didn’t tell me?” I had to hold the phone away from my ear as she yelled. Viggo laughed softly in my ear, and began to pull me backwards. I went with it and suddenly found myself flopping down backwards onto the sofa, still securely wrapped in his arms. “Kira! Ki!” Raven called me, “We need to talk, come over as soon as you can – and bring Viggo.” She sounded serious, but I could tell she was holding back her excitement and questions.

“Sure, we’ll be there.” I smiled as she hung up. As I brought the phone away from my ear, Viggo’s hand closed around mine and gently prised it out of my grasp.

“No more distractions.” He murmured, setting it out of my reach as he held me against him.

“But she invited us over.” I protested weakly, turning to I was facing him.

“When do we have to be there?”

“She said ‘as soon as possible’.”

“Then we can wait a while – besides, we’re busy.” He smiled.

“Huh?” I questioned, but I was quickly silenced as he pressed his lips against mine. “Oh…” I mumbled once he’d pulled back and smiled adorably. I tousled his hair playfully, and he grabbed my wrist and pulled it gently until I was draped across his chest. I wrapped my arms around him and sighed blissfully as he kissed the top of my head. “We really should get going…” I protested half-heartedly as Viggo laughed quietly.

“Alright,” He smiled, allowing me to sit up, “Which car are we taking?”

“Mine, duh.” I grinned, slipping out of his arms and scrambling to my feet.

We left my trailer and walked out to the car park hand in hand whilst I texted Raven to get directions.

“It’s not too far.” I grinned as opened the door and sat down in the driver’s seat. I folded the roof of my Mini down as Viggo climbed in and then we pulled out of the car park.

The traffic in Wellington wasn’t too bad, and I managed to find a parking space down the road from Raven’s building. Viggo climbed out and walked around to my door as I busied myself with folding the roof back down.

“Ready to go?” He asked, opening my door as I unfastened my seatbelt. He held out his hand for me and I smiled as he pulled me out of the car, closing the door behind me. I pressed the ‘lock’ button on my keys and the car bleeped cheerfully as I laced my fingers through Viggo’s and walked down the street at his side. “Which building was it again?” He asked and I pointed to the tall apartment block we were approaching.

“That one.” I replied as he squeezed my hand and we both looked at the little box covered in buttons which was positioned by the door. I pressed the button that was labelled with Raven’s name and a few seconds later the little box crackled.

“Come on up!” Raven called, buzzing us in. Viggo held the door open for me and then we both bounded up the two flights to stairs before we got to Raven’s door. She flung it open as we approached. “Hi!” She grinned, ushering us in, “Quickly, Sean and I are in the middle of watching a game!” As soon as we had walked through the door, she slammed it behind us and bounded across the room, jumping over the back of a slightly worn black leather sofa to land beside Sean in front of a large T.V.

“Nice to see you too.” I smiled with a raised eyebrow. “What are we watching?”

“Soccer game.” Raven replied.

“It’s football.” Sean and I responded in unison, and I laughed a little.

“Soccer.” Viggo protested, pulling me across the room towards another sofa. I quickly took in the room – it was reasonably large, with a kitchen nestled comfortably in one corner, the rest of the room was taken up by the sofas, T.V, and a coffee table. There was a door that I assumed lead to the other rooms.

“Football.” I muttered as I sat down beside Viggo and he casually wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

Soccer.” Raven growled, irritated that I was distracting her from the game, “Ssh, there’s only two minutes left.”

“It’s football.” I sighed, leaning against Viggo, “What’s the big deal? It’s just a game.”

“Don’t get her started!” Sean warned, but was quickly shushed by Raven as she stared intently at the little people in colourful football strips chasing a ball around a pitch. I didn’t even know who was playing… Rugby was more my thing… And even then I was pretty clueless. Viggo seemed interested in the game though – I decided to not even pretend to know what was going on. Suddenly Raven and Sean started screaming at the T.V and I shrank back against the sofa.

“Enthusiastic much?” I grumbled as the yelled at the screen, “The players can’t hear you y’ know…” I had a distinct feeling that they weren’t listening to a word I was saying. “Nice place you have here… Very comfy seats… Do you mind if I go set fire to the kitchen?” Nothing. No reaction whatsoever… They just kept shrieking at the screen. I rolled my eyes and turned to Viggo. “Hi, are you still sane?” I smiled sweetly as he grinned.

“In all the time you’ve known me, what gave you the slightest idea that I was even a little bit sane?” He teased, playfully poking me as Raven and Sean hugged each other.

“So… I’m assuming something good happened?” I tilted my head as they sat back down and Sean used the remote to switch off the T.V. Raven turned to me, grinning madly.

“Hi, sorry about that – important game.”

“Uh… I could tell.” I raised an eyebrow and she ran a hand through her dark hair sheepishly.

“Yeah… So how are you two?” She asked, quickly changing the topic.

“Pretty great.” Viggo grinned, winding an arm around my waist and holding me against his side as I blushed and nodded to confirm his answer.

“It was about time.” Sean smirked, joining the conversation, “I was beginning to think that Vig was going to pine away forever.”

Viggo threw a cushion at him for that – purple satin, very tasteful.

I rolled my eyes and absentmindedly played with the ends of my hair.

“So when did you both realise? I want details!” Raven demanded as I bit my lower lip.

“You know when I realised Rave; you were the first one to know after me.” I replied.

Rave?

“It’s your new nickname. Live with it.”

“Okay…” She nodded, as if approving of the pet name, “So what happened? I want to know!” I glanced at Viggo and he shrugged.

“You can do the honours.” I grinned, stretching out my legs as he leant forward to tell the story – just as my phone rang. “Just a second…” I mumbled, standing and slipping the phone out of my pocket. “Hello?”

“Kira? Kira?”

“Karl is that you?” I asked, suddenly worried by the panic in his voice. Viggo saw my expression and stood, lightly touching his hand to my shoulder as I tried to make out Karl’s panicked stammering. “Karl? Karl you’re scaring me, what’s wrong?” Out of the corner of my eye I could see the worry in Viggo’s eyes as he mouthed‘What’s going on?’ I heard Karl take a deep breath, and I felt like my heart stopped with his next words.

“Kira, its Orlando… He’s in hospital.”

Dun, dun, DUN! Cliff-hanger! This chapter has a really lame title… What was I thinking?! Ugh… Oh well… It’s just one chapter name. I’m sure some of you will be able to work out what’s wrong with Orlando (if you’re awesomely nerdy)! I’ll get on to the next chapter now!
