Thirty Seven - The Messy Family
Elyana marched down to the courtyard angrily, prepared to make Aemond answer for what happened to Dyana. It was not him who did it, but his brother. But she wanted someone with authority to make it right. And who better than Aemond? When Lucia and her got the yard, she raised a brow at the scene.
A dramatic entrance was being made by some silver haired man with dark skin and blue banners. Vaemond Velaryon. Elyana did not care though. The Seven Gods themselves could march through those gates in that moment and she would roll her eyes. Elyana skimmed the crowd, and found her husband smirking at some boys, and then she realized with whom she was treating with. Those bastard boys.
They looked scared, much to Elyana's happiness. And so she went down to the yard, but they were already fleeing Aemond and running off into the castle.
When Aemond's eye landed on his wife, he smiled smugly though the way that she was stalking to him made him drop that smile and await for berating. He knew her body language well. "Do you know what your brother did?!" Elyana asked angrily, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Something that has made you upset. What did he do?" Aemond asked, a worried expression overtaking his face. "I find it suiting we speak inside." Elyana motioned to the Keep, and Aemond nodded, escorting his wife inside.
"What has Aegon done?" Aemond asked once he found a secluded corridor inside the castle. "He raped Dyana! She is being exiled by your mother! She is covering for him." Elyana burst angrily.
"Who?" Was the first thing Aemond asked, though he did not seem shocked. Not really. He seemed stoic at best.
"Dyana! Your sister's handmaiden! I-I shared duties with her when I took post in Helaena's service when we..." She did not need to say it. Aemond knew well when she went.
"He raped her and she is being exiled?" Aemond repeated, trying to get a clear view of the happenings from his wife. Elyana nodded, crossing her arms over her chest and expecting him to be surprised or something.
"And you're surprised?" Aemond asked plainly, making Elyana scoff at his words. "Yes! What, is this his hobbie?! Is that what you Targaryen men do?! Ruin servants?!" Elyana did not think of her words before she said them, and she regretted it when she saw Aemond's face contort in anger.
His eye went dark and for the first time in months she saw that same man that had held her at sword point when she started her work at the Red Keep. "I forbid you from comparing me to my brother. Ruin servants? Everything that ever happened between us was consensual, and when things got hard I took charge for my actions." Aemond spoke bitterly.
"I know that..." She sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying to calm down her nerves and aching heart for Dyana. "It is just baffling to me that he will go unpunished for this... men die for raping yet he is being covered for? What about Dyana? Her trauma? Her honor? She is the victim yet she is the one being ran off." Elyana could not believe her own words.
"It is terrible. I know that full well, my love. But Aegon, sadly, is the King's firstborn son. And no matter what he does, my mother and grandsire will cover for him. It has alway been this way, and will continue to be so." Aemond spoke. It was unfair yes, but it was life.
"And the King?! He lets your brother run rampant around King's Landing being a criminal? What if you told him?" Elyana asked. Perhaps the King would care more than the Queen did.
"My father is a living corpse, Elyana. Rotting away in his chambers. Why do you reckon you've never met him? He cares not for us. You know this." Aemond spoke matter of factly. There was no one in the realm that would chastise Aegon.
"Aemond, he can not get away with this! Somebody has to do something! He is the future King and he is a rapist!" Elyana exclaimed angrily, and Aemond's face contorted in confusion instantly.
"Who told you Aegon would be King?" Aemond asked in a whisper, his mind trying to deal with the fact that his wife knew the secret plans of the council without being on it.
Elyana realized her huge mistake. Aemond did not know that Larys kep her well informed of most happenings of the realm. "I um... I heard some lords saying something like that. That Aegon has a stronger claim or something." Elyana fumbled.
"You are lying to me." Aemond stated simply. He could read her like a scroll. "Who told you my brother would be King?" Aemond pressed.
"It was just court gossip, dear husband. I do not know why I repeated it. Twas dumb of me." Elyana tried lying again, but she knew by the look on his face that he was not buying it.
"Who told you that Aegon would become King, Elyana? Tell me." Aemond ordered. Someone had been involving his wife in matters that were not her business and Aemond did not like that idea. Elyana was not a part of the crown's issues, and he would not allow anyone to involve her in them.
"Aemond... I swear to you that it was just courtly gossip. I am not lying." Elyana implored. He would not be happy to learn of who actually told her, she knew that very well.
"Then why are you rubbing your thumb against your fingers? You only do that when you are lying and anxious to be caught. I know you." Aemond crossed his arms over his chest and narrowed his eye on his wife. He needed to get to the bottom of this.
Elyana sighed and relented, she could not lie. Not to Aemond. "It was Larys Strong." Elyana answered with a sigh. Aemond's eye studied his wife for a second, and then he frowned.
"Larys Strong? Why in the Seven Hells would Larys Strong tell you of the council's plans?" Aemond asked, a stern tone taking over his voice. Elyana darted her eyes away from Aemond and stopped her fidgeting, trying to hide her blatant lying.
"Larys Strong?" Aemond asked, clearly confused at the notion. Elyana nodded and shrugged, trying to act as nonchalantly as possible.
"This does not matter, what matters is that your brother is a terrible human being and he must be stopped. He can not run around the realm raping whoever he pleases with no consequences." She changed the subject easily, trying to draw the attention back to the actual problem.
"No. Do not change the subject. Why is Larys Strong telling you things he should not be telling you?" Aemond asked angrily, making Elyana roll her eyes at his tenacity. "Oh I can't change the subject yet you changed it first..." Elyana spat making Aemond rub his temple in annoyance.
"Do not make me lose my temper, Elyana. Tell me why in the Seven Hells that man is telling you things." Aemond ordered, taking a step to his wife in an almost menacing manner. He was worried because he knew what Larys Strong was capable of, and her lack of honesty was making him lose it.
"I do not know, Aemond. He just tells me random things he thinks I should know. And the usurping of the throne for Aegon was one of those things." Elyana was being honest. She really did not know why Larys Strong was so set on telling her things but he did.
"You expect me to just believe he tells you things randomly? This is something confidential, and he just told you?" Aemond asked, his mind having a hard time wrapping itself around the fact that Larys Strong told his wife things he should not be telling her.
"Yes. I expect you to believe it because it is the true. He is a creepy man, and I do not understand why he is so hyperfixed on me." Elyana spoke truthfully, and this made Aemond narrow his eyes.
He was trying to gauge in his mind why this man was telling her this. "I will speak to him." Aemond stated simply, turning around ready to leave to find Larys and questions his intentions.
"No!" Elyana exclaimed, grabbing his arm to hold him back. Aemond looked back to her with a puzzled expression, and Elyana sighed. "He tells me valuable things, my love. Things that can be of benefit for us, for you." Elyana stated, making Aemond frown.
"Of benefit? What could possibly be of benefit for us?" Aemond questioned her. "I don't know but... perhaps... maybe he can help us. Do you not think?" Elyana asked and Aemond shook his head because he clearly was not following what she was saying.
"Just forget it, Aem. But please, say nothing to him. His information might be of benefit for us in the coming future. Trust me on this, please?" Elyana asked.
Aemond did trust her, because his wife had shown him that she was much smarter than people thought her to be. And perhaps she was right, perhaps Larys Strong could be of benefit for them.
"Fine."

That night the Queen wanted to have supper with her children, her father, and Elyana since it was the eve of the Driftmark trial. Elyana was over it. She sat seething next to Aemond, and across from Aegon and Helaena. She glared at her brother in law all throughout their family dinner, and the man was confused so he would simply smirk back at her.
"Elyana, your belly grows bigger every day. Do you feel prepared for the birth of your child?" Alicent would ask, trying to make polite conversation with the girl. Though she was not having it, she was just as pissed with the Queen for covering up Aegon's crimes as she was with him.
Elyana stared at the queen in silence for a few seconds and gritted her teeth before answering , "I am nervous but my mother has been reassuring me through it all, and still I have a few more moons to go." Elyana answered, looking at Aemond who gave her a reassuring nod.
"Of course. I would love to be a part of your preparations. My births were rather easy, as were Helaena's. I do pray yours are the same." Alicent said kindly.
"Could we perhaps not speak of your birthings mother?" Aegon spoke with a scrunched nose, making Elyana want to grab her goblet and lunge it at him. "I agree, your grace." Otto spoke.
"There is a beast beneath the boards." Helaena hissed randomly, making Aegon roll his eyes at his wife and his rude action only served to make Elyana more angry.
"We've gotten word from one of the orphanages you visited this week, Lady Elyana. The children are happy with you, they adore you." Otto spoke, though she did not like the smug smile on his face. There was nothing to be smiling so smugly about.
"I adore them too, and I enjoy visiting them a whole lot. As does Aemond." Elyana stated, and Aemond nodded in agreement with his wife. He did not enjoy it, not at all. But he did not wish to upset his wife.
Aegon chuckled and his taunting laugh made her snap her head towards him with a raised brow. She was fuming at him and Aemond took notice instantly. He rested a hand upon her thigh, in an attempt to calm her down. "You laugh, brother?" Aemond asked, his eye staring right at Aegon.
"I do laugh, little brother." Aegon smirked as he drank from his goblet. Alicent was glaring at Aegon, and Otto looked as if he was ready to kill him. If they were so angry at the oldest prince, why did they not punish him like he should be punished? It made no sense.
"And why do you laugh, good brother?" Elyana asked, unable to mask the anger that bubbled inside her.
"I find it humorous how whipped my little brother is, good sister. And all because of some servant cunt." Elyana heard Aemond cursing, and Alicent telling Aegon to shut up but she blocked it out. She saw red as she stood up and grabbed her goblet of wine, flinging it at him with all of her might.
Alicent gasped, Otto was stunned, and Aemond laughed loudly as Aegon cursed her name. He was completely drenched in wine, and grasping his nose. Elyana had good aim, her goblet had hit him square in the face. "What the fuck is your problem?! Aemond, get your wife!" Aegon ordered angrily, standing up hastily.
Even Helaena was chuckling. "I do not have to get anything. You should be thanking she defended herself before I stood up, you would have my sword through your intestines by now." Aemond told his brother, standing up and taking his wife's hand.
Elyana was glaring at Aegon, and if looks could kill he would be long dead. "That's what you get for being such a bastard cunt." Elyana spat, making Alicent gasp at her lewd words.
"Lady Elyana! That is not proper for you to say to the prince!" The Queen chastised her. And if she weren't the Queen, she too would get a goblet flying her way.
"Oh please... we were all thinking it." Elyana rolled her eyes and turned to her husband, who was smirking ever so slightly. "Shall we retire to our chambers?" She asked him and he nodded.
"We shall."

Elyana stood next to Aemond in the Great Hall, her eyes entirely fixed on the Princess Rhaenyra and her family. It was the first time Elyana had seen the Princess and her side of the family. Next to Rhaenyra stood her husband, Prince Daemon, who to Elyana looked like an asshole. The Velaryon boys were handsome yet short. And like Lucia would say, short men were untrustworthy. The smaller one looked nervous, and the taller one looked rather smug.
The tension in the hall was too much to bear, and Elyana had to remind herself to breathe every so often because of her anxiousness. She did not know the princess or the princes. But she knew Aemond, she loved Aemond, and they had hurt him so she was biased in her opinions of them. They were the bastards that tormented her husband, and for that they had to pay.
"Though it is the great hope of this court that Lord Corlys Velaryon survive his wounds, we gather here with the grim task of dealing with the succession of Driftmark. As Hand, I speak with the King's voice on this and all other matters. The crown will now hear the petitions. Ser Vaemond of House Velaryon." Otto Hightower spoke, earning the attention of the bustling court. Elyana shuffled in her feet and looked to Lucia, who was standing next to her with a smirk. Lucia adored drama, she was basking in this.
"My Queen. My Lord Hand. The history of our noble houses extends beyond the Seven Kingdoms to the days of Old Valyria. For as long as House Targaryen has ruled the skies, House Velaryon has ruled the seas. When the Doom fell on Valyria, our houses became the last of their kind. Our forebearers came to this new land, knowing that were they to fail, it would mean the end to their bloodlines and their name. I have spent my entire life on Driftmark defending my brother's seat." Elyana looked up at Aemond, who was watching Vaemond intently with a tiny smirk on his face.
"I am Lord Corlys's closest kin, his own blood. The true, unimpeachable blood of House Velaryon runs through my veins." Elyana smirked just the tiniest bit. Might as well call them bastards already.
"As it does in my sons, the offspring of Laenor Velaryon. If you cared so much about your house's blood, Ser Vaemond, you would not be so bold as to supplant its rightful heir. No, you only speak for yourself and for your own ambiti-" The Queen cut Princess Rhaenyra off, making Lucia chuckle slightly and lean in to Elyana. "The Queen hates her guts, you can tell..."
"You will have chance to make your own petition, Princess Rhaenyra. Do Ser Vaemond the courtesy of allowing his to be heard." Alicent stated sternly, allowing Vaemond to continue his rant.
"What do you know of Velaryon blood, Princess? I could cut my veins and show it to you and you still wouldn't recognize it. This is about the future and survival of my house, not yours. My Queen, my Lord Hand. This is a matter of blood, not ambition." Vaemond Velaryon stated. He was blatantly stating that the princes were bastards, though in finer words.
"I place the continuation of the survival of my house and my line above all. I humbly put myself before you as my brother's successor...the Lord of Driftmark and Lord of the Tides." Elyana eyed Lucerys Velaryon, the taker of Aemond's eye, intently. He was nervous, and hiding behind his older brother. Coward.
"Thank you, Ser Vaemond. Princess Rhaenyra, you may now speak for your son, Lucerys Velaryon." The Princess was instructed, and Elyana watched as she moved foward to defend her son. Elyana looked up at Aemond, who looked down to her with a small smile. He looked happy, because he knew they would be victorious.
"If I am to grace this farce with some answer, I will start by reminding the court that nearly years ago, in this ver-" Rhaenyra was interrupted by the doors of the Great Hall opening, and the herald announcing loudly. "King Viserys of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm."
Elyana had never seen the King, not since she was a child visiting the castle with her father. Not since a tourney years ago. He had been kind to Elyana, and he would always gloat about her father's good work as a captain of the City Watch. But the man walking to the throne was a corpse, just like Aemond had told her. He was limping, half of his face covered by a gold mask. Aemond stiffened up at the sight of his father, and Elyana took his hand in hers to comfort him.
"I must... admit... my confusion. I do not understand why petitions are being heard over a settled succession. The only one present... who might offer keener insight into Lord Corlys's wishes is the Princess Rhaenys." The King Viserys spoke when he was finally settled on the throne. Then a blonde woman spoke, a targaryen looking woman whom Elyana assumed was Princess Rhaenys. "Vaemond is fucked..." Lucia whispered.
"Indeed, Your Grace. It was ever my husband's will that Driftmark pass through Ser Laenor to his trueborn son... Lucerys Velaryon. His mind never changed. Nor did my support of him. As a matter of fact, the Princess Rhaenyra has just informed me of her desire to marry her sons Jace and Luke to Lord Corlys's granddaughters, Baela and Rhaena. A proposal to which I heartily agree." The woman spoke and Elyana's heart sank for her husband. They got away with it. His father allowed it, like he always had done.
"Well... the matter is settled. Again. I hereby reaffirm Prince Lucerys of House Velaryon as heir to Driftmark, the Driftwood Throne, and the next Lord of the Tides." The King Viserys affirmed. But Vaemond Velaryon did not look so happy, he looked pissed.
"You break law... and centuries of tradition to install your daughter as heir. Yet you dare tell me... who deserves to inherit the name Velaryon. No. I will not allow it." Elyana had to give him credit. The man was rather bold.
"Allow it? Do not forget yourself, Vaemond." The King spoke disdainfully.
It was a blur, a total haze the events that followed. Vaemond Velaryon was screaming and ranting. "Her children... are bastards! And she... is... a whore!" The Hall erupted into an uproar. Elyana had never seen much bloodshed, seldom for the bloody severed tongue Aemond had given her all of those moons ago. So she stared at Vaemond's Velaryon severed head laying on the ground with wide eyes. Aemond turned her head away from the gore, but Elyana turned to look at it. Stunned at the sight before her.
She looked up at Aemond with fear stricken eyes, but his own eye comforted her well. And it told her something, something important.
