Chapter Ten: The truth within the Melody
It took a while for Angela to find Barry. When she did find him, he was sitting on a beautiful white rock and looking at a cherry blossom tree with a white stone grave near the tree. Inscribed onto the grave was "Melody, a great wizard, an even greater friend." Reading those inscriptions made Angela want to cry, but she resisted. Angela walked over to Barry. Barry turned to her.
"I figured you'd come looking for me," he said, "our of all of your friends, your the one who was most likely to come running after me."
Angela smiled. "You were very hard to keep up with," she said, "I almost lost track of you a few miles back." She looked at the tombstone again. "I'm sorry that Jesse said such hurtful things to you."
Barry looked at her face. He could tell by looking at her that she was reading the inscriptions on the tombstone over and over and trying to resist crying.
"Its fine," said Barry, "I'm used to people badmouthing Melody. I just got a little emotional back there, but I'm fine now. Besides, the guys and I will get back at Jesse later. Maybe draw a mustache on his face while he's sleeping."
Angela giggled. "I'd pay a hundred gold pieces for one picture of that," she said, "I guess that's fair payback since he was saying such awful things."
Barry looked at her with a smirk.
"You don't like him do you?" He asked.
Angela stepped back. "I never said that!" She said.
Barry raised an eyebrow. "But its true isn't it?" he asked.
Angela looked down nervously. "I don't hate him if that's what you think," she explained, "I'm just trying to get to know him and maybe be his friend since you're our friend and you are always hanging with Jesse. But Jesse doesn't seem like he wants anything to do with me. He hates me, I think. I mean, he hates everyone, but I mean truly hats me more than anyone else combined. He's always pushing me away."
Barry put his hand on Angela's shoulder.
"Jesse pushes everyone away, even his own sister," said Barry, "It took Hiro, Troy and I forever to get to our status in our friendship. Jesse is also a little hard to read, he isn't exactly an open book. He shows little emotions, except for annoyance, irritability, anger and hatred. In fact, my friends and I don't know a lot about Jesse. All I know is his parents are both dead, he wishes his sister was dead, and that his magic powers are unstable."
"Unstable?" asked Angela.
Barry nodded. "Yeah, his magic is a bit....well very unstable," said Barry, "he keeps his magic stabilized by meditating every day. However there is one quirk he can't control. Whenever he lies, something always breaks, catches on fire, explodes or something else that's terrible happens."
"Oh, um.....oh," Angela mumbled.
Angela was stunned for words. Angela had no idea someone's background can be as bad as Jesse's and she didn't even know the whole story. Angela was also shocked that someone actually wanted their sibling to die. Angela grew up as an only child and all of her friends had siblings. They're dead, but Sami had two late older brothers, Maya has two older brothers and three little brothers, Ellen has two older sisters and Lily has three older sisters, two little sisters and a baby half-sister. Sure her friends always had disagreements with their siblings, but they loved them nevertheless. Angela always envied her friends for having siblings, she always wished she had brothers and sisters. Then Angela remembered the Dark One. His soulless, malevolent, murderous look on his face as he blew away their town to ruins still haunted her. Angela was the most affected by the attack then her friends because not only did she witness her parents' murder but she had no family to return to. Angela was left with no siblings, no parents, nothing but her friends. She couldn't even turn to her other relatives because her mother grew up as an only child too and her grandparents on her mother's side were both dead. And she couldn't turn to her father's relatives because they disowned her father many years ago. Then a memory came back to her, the day her town was destroyed. It started like a day like any other day. Angela and her friends were going to the movie theater and were arguing over what movie to see. Maya and Ellen wanted to watch this really creepy horror movie called "Murderously Betrayed". Sami, Lily and Angela wanted to watch the movie "Frozen". But before they got to the movie theater, they head the town's sirens go off and saw very dark clouds covering the sky. They also saw many humans adults and children along with wizard children running towards the community shelter. At first they thought it was a tornado, but then they realized that the clouds were too pitch black to be natural storm clouds and if there was going to be a tornado, the storm wizards would have sensed it and stopped it long before it reached their town. They also saw some wizard adults preparing for a battle. Angela and her friends assumed it could mean only one this, an evil force was coming. They didn't waste any time running to the community shelter after coming to that conclusion. At the shelter, Angela and her friends sat close together terrified as they listened to explosions and screaming, even Ellen and Sami hugged each other. Then a woman in the shelter was panicking because she could not find her son in the shelter. And even though there was much protest from the adults, Angela and her friends left the shelter and split up to look for the woman's son. As they searched, they would many dead and wounded wizard bodies scattered everywhere. As Angela searched for the boy, she didn't expect to see anything worse than her town in ruins and many dead or wounded wizards, but she did. Eventually, she found her mother's and father's dead bodies. She also found the dead bodies of Maya's and Ellen's parents and the wounded bodies of Sami's mother and Lily's mother (but at the time, Angela a assumed they were dead too). Angela broke down crying as she saw her mother and father lying together severely wounded, blood stained all over them and completely lifeless. While she was mourning over her parents' death however, she was grabbed by the neck by the Dark One. He grabbed her neck so hard she could barely breathe and was suffocating. She was able to catch a glimpse at his face. His skin was awfully pale, he had dark chaotic eyes and the darkest long black hair she had ever seen.
"Don't bother hoping you can save them," said the Dark One, "they're as good as dead!"
Angela was too shocked for words. She wanted to kill him, but she was too terrified to move. She was staring at the face that took her parents' lives.
"Rosalinda and her friends have had this coming for many years," said the Dark One, "I could just you and your pathetic little friends as an even better act of revenge. However, for now I will let you and your friends live. It wouldn't mean anything if I killed the children of the Magical Elements if they are this weak. But know this Angelina Dawnstone, you and your friends Samantha Flameheart, Lillian Stormblade, Ellen Iceblade and Maya Deathstone will meet the same fate. Be warned that I will destroy you all!"
The Dark One threw her to the ground and the lack of oxygen caused Angela to collapse. When she woke up, Angela was back in the community shelter with her friends, who had found the boy crying under a pile of rubble but obtained no injuries, and the rest of the citizens. She told her friends what happened and they all broke down crying together with her (however, when Sami's and Lily's mother was later revealed to be alive, they were relieved). A few days later after the attack Angela and her friends decided to leave their town, they didn't even stick around for the funeral because it was just too painful Angela, Maya and Ellen. They knew that if the Dark One was going to one day come back to destroy them, they would have to get as far away from their hometown as possible because they would endanger many innocent lives.
"Hey, Angela? Are you okay? Why are you crying?" Said Barry, snapping his fingers at Angela's face.
Angela snapped back to reality. She didn't realize that two tears were rolling down her face. She wiped her tears away with her arm.
"Oh, I'm okay," she said with a smile, "I guess I sort of zoned out for a minute while reading the inscriptions on the tombstone, but I'm okay. What were you talking about again?"
Of course Angela was lying. She was never okay when she dwells on painful memories.
"I was saying that it's a real drag that Letus is dying," said Barry, "The worst part is that when he dies, the barrier spell will be broken because in order for the barrier spell to stay active, all five of the guardian trees must stay alive. Once the barrier is down, Wizard City will become a hunting ground for monsters, demons and evil wizards, which is what's stressing the headmistress the most."
"Why would she be stressed about this? Isn't she a schoolmaster?" Asked Angela.
"Yes, but she's also one of the members of the wizard council," said Barry, "the wizard council are the political leaders of Wizard City. They insure that the city remains in order and that peace is secured. Anyway, so far they have only come up with two possible solutions to solve this. They could use the poison to synthesize an antidote, but that would require cutting Letus open and searching for traces of the poison which could lead to his death or have someone take Letus's place after he dies and become an immortal tree forever guarding Wizard City. But the problem with that one is that only a death wizard can take Letus's place because Letus is the guardian tree of death and well, who would want to be stuck as an immortal tree forever?"
"Hiro might like it," Angela joked, "he's practically in love with nature."
Barry made a sly smile. "I bet he likes you more," he said.
Angela's face turned red with embarrassment. "What made you conclude to such a theory?" She said nervously.
"Oh c'mon, I'm not an idiot," said Barry, "I know that he likes you and I know you like him."
Angela's face then became serious. "Tell anyone....." She warned.
"Say no more, your secret is safe," interrupted Barry, "but you two would make a cute couple if one of you makes a move."
"Shut up!" Said Angela as she punched Barry's arm.
"Ouch, okay anyway the point is we're doomed unless we figure something out," said Barry, rubbing his arm, "everyone says that this is all Melody's fault. That she deserved her fate, but I never thought of it that way. She may have done some very messed up stuff, but I still see her as a true friend."
"You were very loyal to her," said Angela. Angela grinned when an idea struck her. "Was Melody more than your friend? Was she perhaps, your girlfriend?"
This time, Barry's face was red with embarrassment.
"Whoa whoa whoa, no no no! It was nothing like that!" He said, "I mean, I'll admit I did have a small crush on her, but I was totally delusional. I was eight years old back then, she was thirteen; no way was it ever going to happen. I was an in denial kid."
"So, um what happened to her?" She asked, "I mean, if you don't want to tell me that's okay."
Although Angela said that, that's not how she truly felt. In her mind, she said 'Forget your stupid feelings! Tell me what the underworld happened!'
Barry sighed. "To be honest, I really don't know what really went wrong with her," he explained, "Years ago, I noticed a sudden change in her. She became very secretive and kept to herself. Then, she poisoned Letus and left Wizard City for the Dark One before anyone can apprehend her. I was so confused. I couldn't understand why she would do something this terrible. Even the headmistress doesn't know what went wrong with her. I mean, Melody came from a very nice family. Sure her parents are both dead, but her older brother raised her so she was never too unhappy." Barry looked at Melody's grave. "Then, a year later after Melody left, Vanessa and Melody infiltrated into Wizard City in disguise. Vanessa was one of the Dark One's students, in fact, she was his top student. They were ordered by the Dark One to secretly place attachable bombs all over Wizard City. However, much to Vanessa's dismay, Melody secretly removed the bombs oblivious to Vanessa as she attached them. After Vanessa attached all of the bombs and Melody removed all of them, Melody was able to get her and Vanessa alone and without warning, repeatedly stabbed Vanessa in the chest. After she killed Vanessa, she went to one of the caves in Ravenswood woods and planted the bombs in the cave so they would leave a coded message and she planted a few bombs on herself. Then, with the remote detonator, she blew up the cave and herself."
Barry kicked at the dirt.
"What did the message say?" Asked Angela.
Barry shrugged. "Beats me, Anthea is still trying to decode it," said Barry, "just like she's still trying to find Melody's missing arm and leg from when she committed suicide."
Angela put her hand on Barry's shoulder.
"I don't think she was really evil," said Angela, "maybe the message has some information on the Dark One and the only reason she joined was so she could gather information and poisoning Letus was just a way to gain the Dark One's trust."
Barry shrugged. "It's too late to ask her now," he said, "unless you happen to know a resurrection spell."
Angela shook her head.
"Nope, but Maya can conjure zombies," she said.
Barry thought about the girl he had a childhood crush on coming back as a zombie and shivered.
"Tempting offer, but no," he declined.
They both laughed until they heard screaming. Angela walked up a hill to get a better view at Wizard City. Wizard City was under attack by a black griffin!
