Chapter Nineteen: Let the Games Begin Part I

It has been over a month since the girls have arrived to Wizard City and since Lionheart and Emerald had appeared to them and offered them a chance to compete in the Wizard Games. During that month while juggling schoolwork, the girls and the guys trained themselves to prepare for the Wizard Games. The girls have been watching the Wizard Games for years and knew exactly how the Wizard Games were played. Teams made up of wizards and creatures with magical powers would compete in physical, mental and magical challenges and tried to make it to the second stage of the Wizard Games, which would be the fight portion of the competition. Each of the challenges were always hosted by one of the Game Masters, the hosts of the Wizard Games. During the month, the boys successfully performed their spell and got an A+ on their project. Afterwards, Jesse went to train with a master wizard named Azalea. Azalea is a master wizard in her forties that has mastery over all of the wizard elements and offers a training program for many of the wizard students during the summer or during the school year (with permission from Anthea of course). Although it is said that she has a very strict training program and that she pushes her trainees way over their limits. Even though her training is very strict and tough, it always guarantees wonderful results for those who take it seriously. Another major event that happened is that Angela and Hiro started dating a couple weeks ago. After the black dragon incident, they started going on dates and eventually confessed their love to each other and they have been inseparable ever since. After a month of training, the girls now stood in front of the gates of Wizard City awaiting the arrival of the boys. Sami wore a red robe that was orange below the waistline and had an orange trim on the sleeves. She also wore red pointed toe boots, carried her staff and had her hair in a ponytail. Lily wore a purple and yellow robe that was yellow below the waistline and at the long sleeves and had purple trims on the sleeves. She also wore purple boots. Maya wore a black and white robe that was black below the waistline and white on the long sleeves and torso. She wore a white hood, black boots, wore a brooch shaped like a skull on the torso of the robe and carried her staff. Ellen wore a white and icy blue robe that was blue at the torso and below the waistline and the sleeves were white. She also wore blue boots. Angela wore a robe that was light green at the torso, dark green below the waistline and had long white sleeves. She wore a green hood, light green boots and carried her staff. All of them also carried a single backpack.

"What is taking them so long?" Complained Sami, "they were supposed to be here half an hour ago!"

"I don't know, maybe they overslept," said Angela, "oh wait, never mind. Here they come!"

The boys walked towards the gate. Barry wore a red robe with yellow long sleeves and red boots. Hiro wore a robe that was dark green at the torso and white below the waistline and the long sleeves and wore white boots. Troy wore a turquoise robe that was sea green below the waist and the trims on the long sleeves were sea green and wore sea green boots. Jesse wore a black and gray robe that had a gray torso, black long sleeves with gray trims and was black below the waistline. He wore gray boots and his hair looked a bit longer and was in a ponytail. As they walked to the gate, Barry carried Jesse on his back while his backpack was strapped to his front, Troy carried a backpack on his back and on his arm and carried a light green staff with ivy vines around it and a rainbow gemstone on the top, Jesse was sleeping, and Hiro was carrying a long white staff with a black orb on the top like it was an anvil and looked tired and sweaty.

"S-Sorry we're late...." Said Hiro as he struggled to carry the staff.

"Finally! What took you guys so long?!" Complained Sami.

"We were trying to get Jesse to wake up but nothing works," said Barry, "we've tried pretty much everything we could think of but he still won't wake up. So we played Rock Paper Scissors to decide who gets to carry him and his staff. The winner got to carry just theirs and his backpack, second place carries the staff, last place carries Jesse."

"Jesse is probably exhausted from Azalea's training," said Troy, "and I don't blame him. That old hag is pure evil when it comes to training wizards. I've trained with her two summers ago, it was the worst summer ever. It was a thousand times worst then boot camp or military school. I had bruises for months, I was sore for weeks and one time that old hag didn't let me shower for a month."

"Ewwwww," said the girls.

"Actually after a few weeks, you don't smell that bad," said Troy, "my point is that Azalea is harsh."

"She can't be that bad," said Angela.

The boys looked at her.

"Wait, have all you trained with her?" Asked Angela.

"Yes!" Said Hiro, Troy and Barry.

"Poor kid, she has no idea," said Barry.

"If you think that, then you should see these," said Hiro.

He rolled up Jesse's left sleeve. Jesse's left arm was covered with awful bruises that extend to his shoulders.

"O-Oh my gosh....." Said Angela.

Hiro rolled down the sleeve.

"You should see his legs, their worse," said Hiro, "I don't think he got back to our dorm until six o'clock this morning. Dude must be beyond exhausted."

"I think I have a way to get him up," said Lily, "did you try this?"

She walked over to Jesse, grabbed him by his hair and started slapping his face hard.

"Get off your lazy butt Jessebell and wake up!" Yelled Lily as she repeatedly smacked his face.

"Please Lily, I think he's been through enough," said Angela as she cringed as Lily slapped Jesse.

"No keep going, he's had this coming for quite a while," said Ellen.

"Seriously Lily, you might want to step away now," said Barry.

After a few more smacks across the face, out of nowhere, Jesse punches Lily's nose, sending her smacking hard onto the ground. Jesse was still asleep but he was still able to hit her. Her nose began to bleed which made Hiro grow pale and cringe.

"Um, ow?!" Said Lily as she stood up while covering her nose.

"You stupid old bat, leave me alone....." Jesse muttered in his sleep.

Lily gasped and tried to hit him with the staff that Hiro was carrying but when she took hold of it, she fell to the ground due to the weight.

"Tried to warn you," said Barry, "Azalea's training is harsh and extraordinary tough, but it has amazing results. He's still asleep, but if you hit him, he'll hit back even harder while still sleeping."

"Sleep fighting, that explains it," said Lily as she tried to pick up the staff, "Hey Hiro, why is your staff so heavy?!"

"It's not my staff, it's Jesse's. Troy is holding my staff," said Hiro as he tried to catch his breath, "and I don't know why it's so heavy! All I do know is that I lost Rock Paper Scissors, so I had to carry it."

"You think it's heavy too Lily? What's wrong with you people?" Said Barry, "that staff can't be heavy. Jesse swings that stick around all the time without breaking a sweat."

"If you think it's so light, then you carry it!" Said Lily.

"Challenge accepted," said Barry.

He took hold of the staff but fell forward.

"Okay, I was wrong," he said as he got back up.

Maya picked up the staff and twirled it like a windmill. The boys were speechless.

"H-How did you do that? We could barely pick it up," said Hiro.

Maya shrugged. "I just did it," she said, "it was like carrying my staff. If you want, I'll carry it."

"Yes! Thank you!" Said Hiro.

"Your welcome......" Said Maya awkwardly.

The gang was about head out when a young man approached them with a little girl. The guy was a handsome eighteen year old wizard with bronzed skin, white choppy looking hair and his left eye was as violet as an amethyst and his right eye was jade green. He had a scar over his right eye. He wore a gray sleeveless shirt, black pants and black leather boots. He had long black tattoos of what seemed like ancient symbols on each of his arms. The little girl with him looked about ten years old, had fair skin, long ash blonde hair in a French braid ponytail and amethyst violet eyes. She wore a pink sleeveless dress with flowery patterns and a white ribbon tied at the waist, and pink dress shoes. At the base of her forehead was a birth mark of a crescent moon with a star inside of it.

"Um, can we help you?" Asked Sami.

"Would any of you happen to be Angela Audrey Dawnstone?" Asked the man.

Angela came forward. "I am, what can I do for ya?" She said.

"Whatever it is, she didn't do it, Gale!" Defended Hiro.

"Wait, you know him?" Asked Maya.

The guys nodded.

"A lot of people in Wizard City know about Gale and his sister Hope," said Barry, "he's a detective and has been head of the interrogation unit for three years."

The girls were confused.

"Barry, how old is he?" Whispered Maya.

"Eighteen," whispered Barry.

"When I was in school, I skipped some grades," said Gale.

"My big brother is very smart," said Hope cheerfully.

The girls were even more confused that Gale.

"I didn't hear you whisper," said Gale.

The girls were now speechless.

"Are you some kind of mind reader?" Asked Ellen.

"No, but I can see and sense people's auras," said Gale, "I sensed a great amount of confusion in your auras so it wasn't hard to decipher what caused your confusion. Anyway, Headmistress Anthea requests the presence of a miss Angela Audrey Dawnstone. She's asked her to come alone to discuss a important matter. All will be explained once we arrive at the academy."

Angela shrugged her shoulders. "Okay, wait for me here guys," she said, "I guess I'll be right back."

As she walked with Gale, Angela felt unnerved by what could be so urgent.

"You're not in any trouble with the headmistress," said Gale.

Angela was surprised he knew what she was feeling. "H-How did you....oh wait, never mind," she said as she remembered that Gale can sense aura.

"You should know that Lady Anthea and the ancient trees expect great things from you and your friends," said Gale, "I heard that you are the daughters of the Magical Elements, am I correct? You are Rosalinda's daughter?"

"Yes, but to be honest, I'm not trying to be exactly like her," said Angela, "I just want to be the best master wizard and healer I can be. In fact, I plan on becoming a healer for both humans and wizards."

"I see," said Gale, "if I may ask, you're a full blooded life wizard and your friends are all full blooded wizards as well, am I correct?"

Angela hesitated to answer that question. She remembered that Sami was part fire demon, but that was not all she remembered.

"Yep, all of us are totally pure blooded, single element wizards!" Said Angela nervously.

"You hesitated, are you lying to me?" Asked Gale.

"Who hurt you so bad that you can't trust?" Angela joked nervously.

It was silent for the rest of the of the way to the wizard academy and into the headmistress's office. When they entered, the headmistress was looking through a microscope at her desk. The headmistress had her very long blonde hair tied back in a long ponytail, wore a purple short sleeved V-neck shirt, a short black skirt, black high heeled shoes and a white lab coat.

"Lady Anthea, I've brought miss Angela," said Gale.

Anthea looked up from her microscope.

"Ah yes, please have a seat," said Anthea.

Angela and Hope took a seat on the water couch. Gale leaned towards Anthea and whispered something in her ear as she looked through her microscope. Anthea looked up from her microscope.

"Angela, why did you lie when Gale asked you if you and your friends were full blooded wizards?" Asked Anthea.

Panic began to build up in Angela's body. "W-What makes you think I was lying?" She asked.

Anthea looked at Gale. "She doesn't know?"

Gale nodded. "I've only met her and her friends today," he said, "it's part of my ability to see people's auras. When people lie, their auras darken."

"Thanks to Gale, no criminal or suspect can lie under interrogation," said Anthea, "now I think it's time to come clean."

Angela sighed. "Okay," she said, "not all of us are full blooded wizards. Sami is half fire demon and half fire wizard. We tried to keep that a secret because we weren't sure if you would accept her because she is part fire demon so we just kept quiet about it."

"Actually, I already knew she was part demon," said Anthea, "I know because I knew her mother married a the Fire King. She invited me to her wedding in the Fire Empire. So unless she divorced him before she was born, I had to draw to the conclusion that Samantha is part fire demon."

"Actually they did get divorced, but it was a few years after she was born," said Angela.

"Yes I've heard about that as well," said Anthea, "from what I've heard it was something the Fire King did to upset Samantha's mother so badly that she divorced him."

"I don't actually know all of the details about it," said Angela, "and Sami doesn't like to talk about it."

"The Fire King has been a very bad kitty," said Hope, "meow."

"You were lying about something else as well," said Gale.

Panic built even higher in Angela's body. "L-Lying? About what? I've already told you...."

"You also had another reason to lie," said Gale, "but we should really move on to more present matters. Sorry if we made this feel like a police interrogation."

"I-It's fine....." Angela said with a nervous smile.

D-Do they know? Angela thought, do they know I shouldn't exist?!

"Hope, you may explain it to her," said Anthea.

Hope's facial expression became more serious.

"Dark times are ahead for the Wizard Games," said Hope.

Her voice had changed. Her tone of voice was more serious and sounded older than a ten year old's voice. Probably an adult's voice.

"Excuse me?" Said Angela confused.

"Gale's sister Hope is one of the three oracle sisters," explained Anthea.

"But I thought the oracles died thousands of years ago," said Angela.

Hope nodded. "We did die, we were brutally murdered by Chaos thousands of years ago," she said, "but by using our magic, we were able to be reborn in the bodies of wizards or humans. The only problem is that every time we're reborn, we must find each other all over again because their is always a chance we don't get to be reborn as sisters. When we're reborn, we live normal lives until we turn five. Then all of our powers and memories return to us. Luckily for us, this time around we were all born into three different families in Wizard City."

"How can you tell if their the reincarnation of the other two oracles?" Asked Angela.

Hope pointed to the birthmark on her forehead. "All of us are born with different birthmarks that symbolize each oracle. I'm the oracle that sees the distant future so my birthmark is of a crescent moon and a star. The other current oracle, Faith can see events that will occur in the present time. She can identified by the star birthmark on her forehead. And the last oracle, the oldest out of all of us, Destiny can see events that have happened in the past and can be identified with the crescent moon birthmark she has on her forehead. We may look ten physically, but mentally we're thousands of years old. It's the curse of being oracles. As oracles, we are fated to see events the events of the past, present and future. We do what we can to keep history from repeating itself and protecting the world from future disasters. However, during all of our reincarnations, we meet an untimely death that is very brutal and most gruesome."

"Wouldn't being able to live multiple lives be a good thing?" Asked Angela, "it's almost like immortality."

"There is always a price to pay for this kind of power," said Hope, "as oracles, our duty is to the people first. Meaning we could never fall in love or have children. We could never let our personal feelings come in between our duty and besides, in every past life we've lived in, we've ended up being murdered during an unspecified point in our lives. And as we are repeatedly reincarnated, we have to watch loved ones such as friends or members of our past lives family from our past lives grow older and eventually past away. It's the same when it comes to immortality. We are getting off topic again."

"Oh sorry! It's totally my fault! I keep asking questions!" Said Angela.

"It's quite alright," said Hope, "they say curiosity killed the cat, but I think it makes the cat wiser and stronger. Anyway, I sensed that something horrible would happen during the Wizard Games. A disastrous event that could lead to the death of you and your friends, as well as many other wizards. Only one wizard will stand, only one wizard will stand. While the rest die by madness hand."

"What's going to happen?" Asked Angela.

Hope shook her head. "My visions don't always work that way," she said, "all I know is that something terrible is going to happen unless someone tries to stop it. Just because I can see the future, doesn't mean I'll always know in great detail what is going to happen. Sometimes I know and sometimes I just sense that something bad will happen. But I do believe it has something to do with one, some or all of the Game Masters."

"I've also had my suspicions about the Wizard Games," said Anthea, "at last year's Wizard Games, something was not right. Five wizards from Wizard City participated in the Wizard Games last year and none of them ever came back. We've been searching for months for them, but there was not even a single lead we could follow."

"It could just be a coincidence," said Angela, "the only times anyone has ever died was on accident and that one time four years ago when that guy went insane and killed that girl in the fighting rounds of the tournament, but an accidental death hasn't happened in the Wizard Games for over thirty years."

"I don't believe this was a coincidence," said Anthea, "last year, every wizard team that made it to the finals went missing, even the winner went missing. And when I sent Gale last year to question the Game Masters, they said with full honesty that they had nothing to do with the disappearances. Whatever happened was never aired on TV and their was no audience to witness it. Somehow they were able to lie to a walking lie detector. No offense Gale."

"None taken, Lady Anthea," said Gale, "I'm just as puzzled as you are. It's obvious at least one of them is lying, but for some reason I couldn't tell which one. So I couldn't arrest any of them without evidence or knowing which one is responsible."

"So the reason I've called you here is to keep a sharp eye on not only the game, but the game masters as well," said Anthea, "there are only seven game masters, so one of them or all of them have to be responsible for the disappearances of the wizard contestants. If you or your friends learn anything, alert me or Gale immediately. You and your friends may be wizards but your still young. We don't anymore wizards to go missing or get killed. We already have enough problems on our hands. Have you ever heard of the ancient Death Tree Letus and how he is dying?"

Angela nodded.

"Hope, tell her," said Anthea.

"I had a vision about Letus's condition," said Hope, "if matters aren't taken, Letus will die painfully within a month. The barrier will be broken, which will not go unspoken. Monsters will take flight, wizards will try to fight. They will slaughter every wizard in the city and they will show no reluctance or pity! Every wizard in city will die, as monsters rain down from the sky!"

Tears began to roll down Hope's face. Her brother came over to her side and comfort her as she continued to cry. Hope's voice had also changed. It was back to when Angela thought she was just an ordinary little girl. The serious oracle that was thousands of years old has changed back into an innocent ten year old girl.

"So that's why you were looking through that microscope," said Angela.

Anthea nodded. "I was trying to find the ingredients that makes that poison Melody used," she explained, "if I can make that poison, I can analyze it and possibly synthesize an antidote."

"Isn't there an easier way?" Asked Angela, "like maybe removing the poison through surgery? My mother did that all the time whenever she couldn't find an antidote to a deadly poison. She had this magic technique that allowed her to literally put her hand inside a patient's body and extract the poison from the body without causing any internal harm to the body. I've seen her do it, she can literally manipulate the poison and control it when she does that technique."

"Unfortunately, if we were to use surgery, that would require tearing open Letus's tree body and searching for traces of the poison," said Anthea, "and that would either lead to Letus's death earlier than expected or permanent scarring to the body. That will only be done as a last resort."

"I've actually have had an idea that could work," said Angela, "you see, ever since I was little, I was always impressed with my mother's healing abilities and techniques. So from that, she inspired me to become a healer just like her. I even have a goal in mind as I train to become the best healer I can be: never lose a patient. I know that seems like an impossible goal, but I still want to at least try. I mean wizard healers are better trained and are more skilled then most human doctors. Anyway, I wanted to help find an antidote for Letus so I did some research over it in between schoolwork and training for the Wizard Games. I didn't find anything to make an antidote, but I did read something about a magical oasis that has this water that can cure any illness physical or mental, restore youth, heal the wounded and act as an antidote for any kind of poison. The oasis is said to be protected and preserved by the immortal wizard Harmony, a daughter of Light. Since you seem to be pretty knowledgeable about the magic worlds, do you know how to get to this oasis?"

Anthea sighed heavily.

"More than you know," she said, "the oasis is magically secluded from most of the world, both mortal and magical. It's one of the magical secluded areas that was created by Light for her children to live. In order to get their, you would need assistance from someone who is close to Light, like one of her children, grandchildren or better yet, her descendants."

"Do you know where I can find any of them?" Asked Angela.

"You just found one," said Anthea, "I'm one of Light's daughters."

Angela was shocked, surprised and speechless.

"Y-You're....Light's daughter?" Said Angela, in shock, "that would explain Gale has been calling you 'Lady Anthea'."

"A lot of people in Wizard City know I'm Light's daughter," said Anthea, "in fact, that status won me a position on the Wizard Council. Anyway, I would have gone their a long time ago to get the water, but my younger sister is never very helpful towards me. My sister Harmony is very bratty and not very generous towards me. She's always thought that our mother always favored me over all of her other wizard children because I was born first. But my mother doesn't favor any of her children because she loves all of her children unconditionally regardless of their birth order. However, no matter what I tell her, she will always show jealousy towards me, and to be honest, I don't see why. My sister has her own children, she's had more mortal lovers than I've had, she lives at the beautiful Oasis of Restoration and she's got beauty to boot. But all she can focus on is her jealousy towards me. She won't help me at all, but you and your friends might have better luck than me. She's more helpful towards mortals because she pities them because their lives are limited and their bodies are not as strong as immortals. No offense."

"Oh no, none taken!" Said Angela, "so how do I get to this oasis?"

Anthea opened her desk drawer and searched through it for a few seconds. She took out a small brown sack, opened it and pulled out a red crystal from the sack.

"These crystals should help," said Anthea, "these red crystals will transport you and your friends anywhere that you think of. You simply hold the crystal and say where you want to go and who you want to go with and the crystals will take you there. They can only be used once, after their used they crumble into nothing. Ideally you'll just need two, but I'll give you guys thirty if you ever want to use the extras, just make sure you save two for the oasis. You can even use one to have you and your friends transported to the Wizard Games."

"Oh that won't be necessary. I've already made travel arrangements, but thank you for the red crystals," said Angela, "if that is all, I think I should get back to my friends before they leave without me. They'd probably do it too. They once left me at the mall because I took too long trying on clothes."

Anthea laughed at my comment.

"Very well, you are dismissed," said Anthea.

Angela stood up and walked towards the door. But before she walked out the door, she looked back. Her eyes turned gray.

"I won't let Letus die," said Angela in a serious tone of voice, "I will get that water for him no matter what it takes, that's a promise."

Angela's eyes turned blue again and she walked out the door.
