Chapter 24: Era of Depression

Year 1300's

In the Muggle Society, religion became a strong force that can be as strong as a monarch. In Europe, the beliefs of the Christians has spread far and wide. Meanwhile, in the magic world, witches and wizards had no strong sense of justice and unity at the time.

In this century, Muggles became afraid of the presence of Wizards and Witches but they're not good at recognizing magic. And so, Witch Burnings came to the world of the Medieval Ages.

Muggles mostly captured Witches, and burned them at a stake. With Muggles capturing suspected witches, the captured females was put into trials, and most of the women brought to court would leave with a death sentence.

Year 1400's

This is when things started to affect the Nations real badly. If in the 1300's there have been only a few witch burnings, in this century burning people at the stake became a popular torture technique.

With religion rising to more power and influencing everyone greatly, people used religion to get what they wanted. And so, countless claims and trials of Heresy spread throughout Europe.

"Monsieur sir France!" A lively lady greeted the Nation, wearing male's armour.

"Monsieur Jeanne!" France smiled back at the lady, throwing a flying kiss but the lady just laughed it off.

"What are you doing out in the field like this? Don't you hate the sun burning your skin?" Jeanne pointed out, standing beside France.

"During times like this where the breeze is cool reminds me of the old times, where I would meet an unfashionable boy in the meadow." France chuckles, remembering how he would pester England nonstop and how England fails to be fabulous.

Jeanne was silent for a while, making France turn to her. She was staring at him, like she's studying a newly found life. The Nation had his cheeks turn pink but he coughed it off, facing Jeanne once again.

"Have you finally found my face to be perfect and handsome?"

The woman chuckled, not getting tired of his responses. "You and your jokes sir France. I just find it odd that you're talking about a little boy, and the way you looked while talking about him is something I have never seen before. You look like you missed him, or maybe cherished him."

"No one knows, my love." France smiled at her.

Ignoring what he just called her, Jeanne looked at the town that's bellow the mountain cliff. Taking some fresh air really was the right choice.

"Want to walk with me going to town?" France offered, putting his hand on his waist for Jeanne to cling to.

"Sure, why not?" The woman turned back and immediately started walking, leaving France crying in the back with Jeanne declining to wrap her arm on his.

When they reached town, the two walked around, chatting about their lives. France tried to flirt here and there, but Jeanne was good in shutting him down. She's used to France being like this, so she doesn't really mind him flirting and crying.

"You're so mean, love." France sniffed.

"I don't know what you're talking abou-"

"Fraaaaaance! There you are, you wanker! I'll kill you!"

With a man charging towards France's direction and yelling words like that, Jeanne's body couldn't help but react to it. Pulling out her sword, ready to strike when hostility is spotted, France puts his hand over her eyes, telling her to stop.

"It's okay, you can put the sword down." France whispered to her ear. Jeanne followed his words, and sheathed her sword.

The man finally arrives at France's side, gasping for air. "You haven't payed your debt! It's been a month since the deadline, you wanker!" England yelled, pointing at the French.

"Calm down bushy-brows. My boss already sent the payment yesterday, but it's going to take a while before it reaches your place of course. Ohohoho~ You came here for nothing." France laughed at England's misfortune.

"T-That's because you sent the money late, idiot!" England's face turned red.

"I-di-ot~! It's called being fashionably late. Ohohoho~" France continued to mock him.

Jeanne suddenly realizes that the man talking to France is England, so she bowed. "I'm sorry sir England! I didn't know it was you from all the smoke so I raised my sword!"

"Raise your head, Joan. There's nothing to be sorry about. If anything, I should be sorry for using foul language in front of a lady." England's gentleman side rose to the surface, bowing to Jeanne.

"Now that you've done what you originally came for, leave!" France tried to push England away but he won't leave.

"I just came here, git! At least let me rest, I also hate being here you know?!" The Brit yelled in annoyance.

Jeanne laughed at their bickering, seeing that it was funny and entertaining. France smiled, happy to see Jeanne laugh like that. He's moment was ruined when England kicks him in the face, and another fight between the two started.

In four months, Jeanne had said that he can hear the voice of God, and she does the things said to her. She freed Orleans and brought back the captured King back to his rightful nation, France. And she managed to succeed in holding Charles VII's coronation ceremony.

But then, she was captured and imprisoned. Then she was charged for cross-dressing, wearing male's clothes because it can discourage and prevent rape. Her cross-dressing is repeated offense, which is called "Heresy" at the time, and it became a capital crime. She was molested, and charged to death.

The Magic Within Me✵✣

No, no, no! Oh heavens, please tell me that this is a dream, that this is a nightmare. Please let it be all a dream!

France rushes to the town center, where the execution is said to be done. His eyes started to swell, but he kept it in, hoping that everything will be alright.

The King wouldn't abandon her... No one would...

I wouldn't abandon her...

By the time he got there, in the middle lie a stake with someone tied to it, being burnt alive. France's time stopped, it was as if he couldn't breathe, and all that was there is pain in his heart.

Two clergys held a crucifix before the woman burning. In front her, a small cross was placed in front of her dress, it was given by an English soldier.

"No... You must be joking..." France's voice trembled. "This is not happening... W-What... Wha..."

The tears he held in all came out, screaming in pain. The amount of grief and sorrow that he feels couldn't be compared to that of any other.

What's the worst is that England was there, and he saw it all. From Joan being tired to the stake up to the burning.

English men came after the fire died down, and they started raking the remains and ashes of Jeanne. This caused France to get up and punch one of them, making him fall to the ground.

"What are you doing to her remains?!" He yelled in fury. Raking her remains like this, what dishonor and shameless act this is.

"We're going to burn her body again and again until nothing remains. Not even skin, flesh, and bone." The Englishman replied, standing back up.

France went hysterical and soldiers started started to restrain him. "Let me go! Jeanne doesn't deserve this! She doesn't deserve any of this! This... This monstrosity!"

"France! That's not enough!" England comes out of the shadows and tried to calm the unstable Nation.

The Brit's eyes widened in shock when France turned even angrier. "You! This is your fault! You Englishman! Because of the Hundred Year's War... This is all your fault!"

Ah... What am I doing? Of course his mad... My people did this to him.

"I hope that you burn tied to a stake until nothing's even left! I will see to it that you will die!"

France's depression and rage dragged on for years, and it affected the other Nations. Each and every time Witch Burning happens, France loses himself, trapped in haunted memories of May 30, 1431 where a 19 year old patriot girl was burned.

Year 1500's to 1700's

Witches and Wizards left the Muggle world and went in hiding in the magic world. There are few who stayed, and most burned to death. Later on, this was not the case. Even innocent Muggles were burned to the ground. Wizardkind did nothing to help or save the innocent people from their fellow Muggles.

"Let the Muggles kill their own kind, reduce them to ash if they must. We will not interfere with their foolishness and ignorance." With that said by the Wizard Council, the Muggles continued their witch hunt without really finding any witches.

Nations had to watch the burnings, they are forced to. They're forced to watch, forced to burn, and forced to capture the suspected witches.

The first Nation to be victimized is Belgium, who was told to burn the witches at the stake, whether innocent or not. The happy and energetic female Nation suffered trauma and nightmares. Netherlands and Luxembourg couldn't do anything at the time.

Germany had witnessed a lot of it, and he was just a little boy that time. Prussia was nowhere to be seen, he disappeared for a long time and came back with a body that's weakening.

Switzerland also became a victim. He was just glad that Liechtenstein didn't see him do such horrible things, and that alone is already okay.

Witch burnings happened less in Scotland, Scandinavia, and Poland. Scotland went on a rampage, refusing to burn his people and became uncontrollable until England and his brothers made him sleep for a while. Scandinavia, or the Nordic countries, also had their share in the burnings. But Denmark and Norway had a lot of witch burnings compared to the rest. It was during this time where Norway's situation is similar to that of Scotland. This is where his thoughts darkened and this is the beginning where he would start joining wars in the wizardry world. For Poland, his cheerfulness vanished and his neighbors grew uncomfortable with the deadly silence in Poland's home.

Hungary on the otherhand had escaped witch burnings and trials since she and her people don't believe in magic. It was a safe haven for real witches and female Muggles. That was until the 18th century, wherein Austrians forced the Hungarians to do trials.

At the time, England found little America and France found little Canada. Everyone became busy with the Renaissance and the advancement of the Muggle world but executions for witchcraft still didn't end.
