Chapter 20: The First Second Day
Last night, the Nations had slept in their own respectful houses. Bulgaria, Norway, and Scotland slept with strangers while Romania and England were fortunate to have each other as roommates with a few other Slytherins with them. Although, to Romania and England, being roommates is rotten luck.
Wales, who turned himself to a dragon, watched his little brother until England had fallen asleep. After he made sure that the brit is safe, Wales flies to Scotland's room and looked through the window to see him. The redhead's already asleep, topless. With that, Wales left the castle.
Morning came, and sunlight spread across the land. The Nations woke up and after changing into their uniforms which consists of cloaks and ties, they all headed to the Great Hall. They had their breakfast there and once done, they had a fifteen-minute break. The four first year Nations goes out in the open field to talk and exchange stories. There are no rules that restricts students from different houses to be together.
"As first years and basic wizardry, we have..." England was trying to read their schedules and classes until Romania snatched the scroll away from him.
"We have Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy, and Herbology. And it seems that first years are required to take flying lessons." Romania read out loud.
"I'm going to love Charms and Potions." Romania pointed out to everyone.
"Now give me that!" England snatched back his schedule from Romania, sticking his tongue out. The Romanian brought out his tongue as well.
A bunch of Hufflepuffs passed by, waving their hands to Bulgaria. Some smiled, and others greeted him. Bulgaria greeted them back with a warm smile.
"You made friends that fast?" Romania narrowed his eyes at Bulgaria.
The raven-haired laughed nervously at his friend's facial expression. "We just talked and shared some stories, and we became friends."
This time, a group of students from different houses passed by.
"Hello Nikola!"
"Nice seeing you again!"
"Let's talk again sometime, okay?"
Bulgaria just smiles and waves as they leave. The Nations can still hear their voices from afar.
"That guy's a great fella."
"I agree with you on that one."
The rest of the Nations looked at him, having looks of disbelief, except for Norway who always had a pokerface on.
"Even with the other houses?" Romania pressed.
"Funny story actually. I got lost last night in the halls of Hogwarts and came across several students, they helped me out and we talked for a little but we eventually became frien-"
"Now shut up." Romania covered Bulgaria's mouth in annoyance. No one knows if its jealousy or irritation. The poor boy continued to make muffled sounds until his friend decided to let go.
They continued to tell stories until the bell rang, signaling for the first class of the day. The first class they needed to take is Potions, much to Romania's delight. It's a one-hour class, and the students goes straight to potion making.
For today they're going to make a potion called "Cure for Boils", which is a lot helpful. Romania's disappointment can be obviously seen with his lackluster face. He hoped for something like love potions, morphing potions, and other wicked stuff. England laughed at his misfortune while Bulgaria tried to comfort him.
Making the potion is done individually, and so their female professor gives the recipe and instructions on how to make one.
England and Norway are just right next to each other, making the potion. Bulgaria's not too far away and Romania was the farthest, still having lackluster actions.
England read the instructions on how to make the Potion.
1.) Add crushed snake fangs to your cauldron and stir.
2.) Slice your Pungous Onions finely and place in cauldron, then heat the mixture.
3.) Add dried nettles.
4.) Add a dash of Flobberworm mucus and stir vigourously.
5.) Add a sprinkle of powdered ginger root and stir vigourously again.
6.) Add pickled Shrake spines.
7.) Stir gently, so as not to overexcite the Shrake spines.
8.) Add a glug of stewed horned slugs.
9.) Add porcupine quills.
10.) Finally, wave your wand over the cauldron to finish the potion.
"Doesn't seem so bad." England said to himself, but Norway had heard it.
The two Nations did their potions slowly but surely, not wanting a failure. They didn't speak to each other and no one dared to talk, concentrating on their cauldrons.
The peace was disrupted when a girl shrieked, making everyone look at the source. The girl had made a mistake in making the potion, causing the cauldron to melt and making the potion spill to the floor. It caused an extremely foul and horrid odor.
Everyone coughed from the smell, and the room was in an enclosed space. The professor immediately whipped her wand and fixed the cauldron, the potion, and removed the stinky smell.
Right after that, one boy accidentally spills the potion on his hand before completion and boils started to erupt on his skin. The professor helped him by giving a completed 'Cure for Boils' potion.
England and Norway looked at each other, eye-to-eye. From that simple look, they understood to be careful or else they're going to end like them. And having failure means you don't get to pass the activity.
Even when Romania is disappointed and has a lackluster expression, he finished making the potion first than anyone else. Some students were in awe, others got inspired, and the rest were jealous.
The professor clapped and complimented on Romania's amazing work. The boy just gave a weak smile in return.
"When do we get to do some complex potions?" He asked.
"In your next years of Hogwarts." Their professor smiled, making Romania fall deeper into despair.
More people continued to fail making the potion and the rest were successful. Norway finished his potion first than England and he was successful. Since he had time, he decide to visit Bulgaria. Arriving at his station, he looked at the raven-haired's progress.
"Ah, hello Lukas." Bulgaria smiles and goes back to reading the instructions carefully.
"You haven't failed yet, right?" Norway asked.
"Yes, I haven't had a failure yet." Bulgaria replied.
Looking farther back, the Norwegian can see Romania's smug look towards Bulgaria's table. Once in a while, the vampire would pretend to pass by and brag about his achievements. Norway pitied Bulgaria for having a friend like Romania, but the pity wasn't shown in his face.
"Good luck, Nikola." Norway said and left, hearing the professor congratulate England in finishing his potion from afar.
Bulgaria's the last Nation to finish his potion but he received genuine compliments and congratulations from other students. To the Magic Trio, who are alone in one corner of the room, Bulgaria had shining stars in the background as he says his thanks to the students.
"Why is he so damn popular with the students?" England says, having a tone of irritation.
"I completed first but only a few people was like that towards me." Romania had his arms crossed, feeling annoyed as well.
"Just leave Bulgaria alone, jealous bastards." Norway was irritated at his two companions.
After class, they had a fifteen minute break before going on to their next class which is "History of Magic". They learned the earlier forms of magic like how the early Egyptians used curses on tombs. They also learned that in India, they had snake charmers, and in Greece they have already practiced Dark Magic.
After that, it was lunch break which is one hour. When they were eating, they heard a few rumors that Scotland aced in Potion and History of Magic classes.
The bell rings, and it was time for Charms class. Romania was looking forward to this class and hopes it isn't another disappointment.
They started with a Levitation Charm. Their professor said the basics and how to cast the charm and then lets the students try it out on a parchment.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" All the students chorused, trying to make their parchment float in the air.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" England tried it only once and he made his parchment fly.
Their professor clapped, and he was in disbelief. No one has ever got the spell right on their first try.
"Wingardium Leviosa." Norway said, making his own parchment float.
Right after him, Romania had his parchment in the air. A number of students got it right before Bulgaria did but he received congratulations left and right, annoying Romania and England again.
The Romanian definitely enjoyed Charms class and is very amused. In no time, almost everyone was making things levitate but no one can levitate something heavy like a wooden table. England managed to levitate a chair, and the same goes with the rest of the Nations.
After the class, they had another fifteen minute break. After that, it was Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
Their professor is a male and he was extremely strict. He explained the spell that the students are going to do, and it is the Curse of the Bogies. It is a simple spell that causes someone to have a strong cold. It can make the person collapse if it is not treated immediately, and they'll have an extremely runny nose, making mucus fall down like water.
"You, the boy with black hair from Hufflepuff." Their professor pointed at Bulgaria.
"Me?" Bulgaria pointed at himself.
"Come forward, you are going to be the first student to try out the spell." The professor announced.
"Lucky him." Romania whispered to England. The brit nodded in agreement while Norway just watched the professor and Bulgaria.
"You know the spell, try it." The professor says with a smug look and in an annoying prideful tone.
"Okay." Bulgaria smiled nervously.
He prepared his wand and concentrated on the spell. "What's taking so long? It's just an easy spell-"
"Mucus ad Nauseam!" Bulgaria yelled and his wand produced green light, then it goes to the professor.
Everyone fell silent, waiting for something to happen, but there was none. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. With this easy spell, you can't even do it succesfu-"
All of a sudden, the professor couldn't breathe because his mucus was covering his nostrils. Then, his mucus started to fall at a fast rate, making him cover his nose immediately with his cloak. Seconds later, the professor fainted, falling head-on to the floor.
Bulgaria panicked but the students roared and cheered in awe of the Bulgarian. An assistant arrived and brought a counter-curse, which is a pepper-up potion. The assistant lets the professor drink it, but the side-effect made everyone laugh. Steam started coming out of on both the professor's ears, which is a funny sight to watch.
England and Romania laughed but their companion, Norway, stayed emotionless like he always does.
Because of the earlier incident, they had to cancel practicing the spell for it may hurt someone. The students groaned and complained but they had no choice. Instead, they read their scrolls for their next lesson.
After the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, all had a thirty-minute break. After that would be their dinner. When the Nations went out of their class, they went back to the field and tell their thoughts about their second day in Hogwarts.
"This place is cool." Romania smiled, being hyper and energetic.
"I learned a lot of new things, which is pretty nice." England commented.
"I'm really enjoying my stay here. I don't regret enrolling to this school." Bulgaria admitted.
"Hm. It's alright." Was all that Norway could say.
"What was that? Come on, show that you at least like being here." England said in annoyance.
"Does my joy need to be expressed?" Norway replied, looking annoyed at England's expression.
"Of course!" The brit said.
Their little argument was interrupted when a group of Slytherins passed by.
"Did you hear?"
"About what?"
"You know that redhead Slytherin?"
"Billy Horseblock?"
"No! What was his name again? Uh... Allistor! Yeah, Allistor!"
"Oh, that guy. What about him?"
"In Charms class, he levitated a huge chest full of books!"
"Lies, no one can lift something that heavy-"
"No, the people in his class saw it with their very own eyes! Not to mention, there was this one class that had four students lifting a chair!"
"I can even barely levitate my parchment!"
"Me too! Those kids are monsters."
"Oh, have you also heard? In Defense Against the Dark Arts class, one student from Hufflepuff actually made a professor collapse real hard! That's why all the lessons were cancelled."
"Hufflepuff you say? Come on, lets ask some Hufflepuffs about that student. I want to see if that guy is really strong."
The Nations heard Scotland's rumor, and felt very competitive. Next time, they'll try to lift something heavier than a chest filled with books. But they looked at Bulgaria after processing what they had said. It seems that the Hufflepuff is becoming famous by the day.
"I won't lose to you." Romania said in a haunting voice, making Bulgaria laugh nervously.
The bell rings, signaling dinner. All the students goes to the Great Hall, seeing another feast of food.
The Nations ate at their own respectful tables. With this, their fellow housemates asked them questions and tried to befriend them.
"You're Vladimir, right? My friend's in your class and he saw everything! He said you made the potion like an expert!"
"You're the guy who finished first in potion-making class. Hey, let's be friends."
"Hi! I'm Eliza McBeth, nice to meet you!"
"Arthur Kirkland, am I correct? I saw you in Charm class. I was just seated two seats behind you and I saw how you levitated your parchment with ease. Not to mention, you're the first to levitate a chair!"
"Dean! He's here! He's a first year! Make it fast, idiot!"
"I keep on seeing you since the first day! I knew you're someone special! If you want, can we be friends?"
The Slytherins surrounded Romania and England. The two was filled with pride and arrogance, bathing in glory and fame.
Scotland on the otherhand is eating peacefully with no one disturbing him. People fear him for his bad temper and the death glare that he gives to anyone that tries to speak to him.
Bulgaria's basically surrounded by all sorts of people from different houses. Most wanted to be his friend, and others were there to witness if what the rumors says is true. The rumors is that Nikola is a great guy with a great attitude and a guy who possesses great magic power.
Norway had a few people pestering him, but he got rid of them easily since they're few in number. He's glad that he isn't like the rest, surrounded by people. The Norwegian wanted peace, not chaos.
At the end of the day, the Nations had a good and deep sleep, tired from today's events. They were looking forward to tomorrow, the third day of school.
