Salem's Port
🧛♀️Maggie & Mina Above🧛♀️
As Halloween draws near, the Black Pearl drops anchor in a town called Salem's Port, so Captain Jack can take Maggie Trick-or-Treating. At the same time a Vampirate is in town, teaching his reluctant daughter, Mina to hunt for victims. Remarkably, Maggie and Mina bare an uncanny resemblance to each other...

Halloween... what is it about this holiday that makes it so appealing? Is it the candy? The decorations? The idea that the barrier between the dead and the living is weakened and could possibly be breached? For little Maggie Sparrow the charm of this night came from the costumes! The ability to take on a new persona! She could be anyone or anything she wanted! It was even more fun than committing identity theft!
Maggie crushed a lump of coal and stared into her father's shaving mirror as she smeared the black powder around her eyes. She now looked like a real Vampire, freshly arisen from the coffin!
Maggie had been working on her costume for the past month. She dressed herself in the black dress from the back of her closet, in case of her father's untimely death. Hey! The man was a pirate, he could die in a hundred years... or tomorrow, you never know!
Maggie combined her would-be funeral attire with some black lace stockings, Elizabeth had sent to her. Except Maggie never wore stockings, so she wore them on her arms. Then she took some black crow's feathers from an abandoned nest she found on a rocky cliffside. She glued the shiny black feathers across the collar of her dress and... Volià! She was a vampire!
Suddenly Maggie heard her father's voice outside the cabin door, she quickly hopped off the bed and crawled underneath it.
As Captain Jack Sparrow came into the room and sat on his bed, his ankles dangled off the bed, on either side of Maggie's face. Just as Jack was about to reach down and take off his boots, Maggie's hands shot out from under the bed and grabbed his ankles.
"YEEE!" Captain Jack shrieked at a frequency that a grown man should not be capable of.
Maggie was laughing so hard she could barely crawl out from under the bed.
"Maggie!" Her Father tried to regain his normal breathing pattern. "What are you doing? If you intend to scare me to death, make sure that you're included in my will first!"
"You don't have anything I want anyway!" Maggie shrugged, plopping down on the bed beside him. "I just wanted to test out my Halloween costume on you."
"Yes, you're a cute little... crow girl...?" Jack guessed.
"Vampire!" Maggie frowned. "The feathered collar is just an accessory!"
"Ah! A vampire!" Jack nodded. "Are those the one's that turn all hairy under a full moon?"
"That's a werewolf, Dad!" Maggie sighed. "How do you not know this? You're usually so well read in the supernatural!"
"I am" Captain Jack said. "I know all about the real life monsters like Krakens, Mermaids, Sea Serpents, Megalodon, Ghosts, the Loch Ness Monster... But these fictional monsters like Vampires and Were-ruffs--"
"Werewolves!" Maggie corrected.
"--Are not but a bunch of holiday hoopla!" Jack finished. "I'll admit it is adorable seeing children dress up like them, but some people take the belief of these creatures far too seriously!"
"How do you know Vampires don't really exist?" Maggie asked.
"Think about it, Luv" Jack told her. "In all of our adventures when did we ever come close to seeing someone who drank blood, wore black and hid from the sunlight?"
"Well, of course you can't see them!" Maggie told him. "Everybody knows that Vampires sleep all day and only come out at night when people are sleeping!"
Jack furrowed his eyebrows. "Where did you hear that?"
"In a book about folklore!" Maggie answered.
"Oh... Well, when I'm out on the deck of the Pearl at night, why is it I never see any Vampires?" Jack asked.
"Cause they don't just go walking around! They can't! It'll seem too suspicious!" Maggie said in an obvious tone.
"Oh, I see!" Jack humored her. "Then how do the Vampires get around at night?"
"They turn into bats! Duh!" Maggie gave him a light smack on the forehead.
"So you're saying that the Vampires only come out at night and humans don't even realize it, because they disguise themselves as bats?"
"Mmm-hmm!" Maggie nodded.
"How do they turn themselves into bats?" Jack asked, knowing he had her beat.
"They drink all their vampire milk!" Maggie explained.
Captain Jack's face dropped into a deadpan expression. "Vampire milk?" He asked.
"Yeah! They take a cow into a cave of vampire bats and the bat bites the cow to infect it with the vampire venom" Maggie explained. "And then the Vampires milk the cow and drink it, because when the cow's milk is infected with Vampire bat venom, it makes the Vampires strong and healthy and gives them the power to transform into a bat and fly! Just like how regular milk makes humans big and strong!"
"Vampires have their own brand of milk that makes them turn into a bat?" Jack clarified.
"Yep! That's what I said!" Maggie exclaimed.
"So..." Jack said. "If the Vampires have their own brand of milk, why do they need to drink blood? Answer me that, aye?"
"Sometimes the people they drink from have fatty blood that's full of cholesterol" Maggie said. "So they gotta drink their milk to make them healthy. Y'know like how you make me take my tonic before bedtime? The milk is like a helper vitamin!"
"Wait a minute!" Jack told her. "If Vampires are immortal, why would they need to be so health conscious? It's not as if they can get sick or die?"
"If they drink too much fatty blood, they'll get too big and they can't fly!" Maggie explained. "When have you ever seen a fat bat, Daddy?"
"Never I suppose..." He sighed in defeat. "Well... thank you for explaining it to me, dear."
"You're welcome" Maggie grinned. "So you believe in Vampires now?"
"You know what I believe, Maggie?" He replied.
"What?" She asked.
"I believe I have a little lunatic for a daughter!" Jack exclaimed.
Maggie stared at him. "...Blame it on genetics" she muttered.
"Maggie!" Captain Jack scowled.
☠🧛♀️☠
What Jack and Maggie didn't know was that Vampires did in fact exist... and a pair of them had just made port in the same town as them!
You see the popularity of piracy had made it's way to the vampire society as well. Causing a new generation of high seas criminal vampires which were known as Vampirates! And chief among these Vampirates was the former Count Jorgan Stoker, Captain of The Darkened Dusk. Another person who was always aboard Darkened Dusk was Captain Jorgan's young daughter, Mina Stoker.
Although even when you lead an immortal existence, times have a way of changing. Little Mina has grow tired of the vampire lifestyle. Oh sure, being a vampire seems so magical and hauntingly beautiful in stories. But in reality, Mina hated having to hunt humans and take lives to keep from starving. She had tried substituting animal blood, but it just wasn't the same. Plus there was always a risk of rabies poisoning.
But Mina Stoker had just found a solution to her dietary predicament. A brand new human-constructed concept that in Mina's eyes seemed revolutionary...
"Vegetarianism?!" Captain Jorgan shouted.
"It's a much more healthy lifestyle, Daddy" Mina nodded. "I simply drink animal blood instead of human blood!"
"It's ridiculous" Jorgan told her. "This is just one of those stupid human trends! They come and go as quick as you can blink! I remember decades ago when people were going mad for ruff collars and now nobody wears ruffs anymore! I mean, it makes for easier access to the neck, but where is the style? Where is the showmanship of status?"
Mina rolled her eyes. "Daddy, we're in the eighteenth century now! Times have changed!" She told her father. "And I want to change too! I want to be the world's first vegetarian vampire!"
Jorgan stared at his daughter, his expression wide-eyed and slack jawed. "I swear you get this from your mother's side of the family" He said. "They were all about being progressive and abandoning their vampiric traditions. Human sympathizer's... But I won't have that for you!"
"But Dad--" Mina groaned.
"I don't want to hear it!" Jorgan said. "Tonight is All Hallow's Eve..."
"You're not gonna ground me, are you?" Mina whimpered.
"I'm actually going to do the exact opposite" Captain Jorgan explained. "I'm taking you out! So you can see how these humans you're so infatuated with, make a yearly spectacle of themselves at our expense! Once you see how those ignorant human children have been taught to parody and make fun of us, you'll realize that this ridiculous notion of vegetarianism is a stupid human-made concept! That should not be taken seriously!"
"But Daddy..." Mina pleaded.
"No! Now we're going out tonight and you're going to learn to be a proper vampire" Jorgan scolded her. "You can't deny what you are! It's in your nature to be a vampire and that is what you'll be!"
Mina huffed. "What's the point of arguing with me if you're not even going to hear me out?" She snapped as she stormed off to her cabin, slamming the door.
Mina flopped down into her coffin and buried her face in the satin lining. She understood her father's need to keep up their family traditions. All in all she had no complaints about wearing black or sleeping in a coffin all day, those were mandatory survival norms. But it was the gruesome aspects of this life she dreaded.
Moments like when her Father and his crew of vampirates, sailed towards a merchant ship in the pitch black of night. When the ships only had one or two helmsmen awake to steer the ship and the rest of the crew were sleeping down below deck. That's when they'd strike, quick as lightning the vampirates would snatch the helmsmen and latch onto their necks and drain them dry. Then her father's crew would go below and finish off the men sleeping below.
All the while Mina would watch on in empathetic sadness for the men being slaughtered. She would watch them struggle and plead for their lives as the vampirates merely chuckled and taunted them. She would watch the life drain out of the sailors eyes as their pupils dilated and they fell softly into death. It was a horrid and disturbing sight to say the least...
Sometimes Mina Stoker wondered how the other half lived... the human half, that is.

Trick-or-Treating is a time honored tradition for children. The name says it all, it involves a child going to someone's house and requesting a treat. Should the homeowner refuse, the child automatically had permission to cause mischief and trick them. Eggs would be thrown, toilet roll would be strung from tree's and snickering would commence the next morning as the homeowners cleaned up the mess they caused!
However Maggie Sparrow's version of trick-or-treating found a way to combine both the candy and the mischief aspects in one...
Captain Jack and Maggie walked around the town of Salem's Port, blending in with all the other parents and trick-or-treating children. Jack had agreed to take Maggie out, but only if they kept a low profile.
As her father leaned against a lamp post across the street, Maggie knocked on the door of a house and a young couple answered.
"Trick-or-treat!" Maggie recited.
"Oh my! Aren't you scary?" The Housewife giggled. "Dear, look! It's a little vampire!"
Her husband poked his head in the doorway and grinned as he removed his pipe from his mouth.
"Oh, innit that too sweet..." he chuckled, looking down at her. "And here is your sweets..." he tossed a peice of taffy in Maggie's candy sack. "Happy Halloween..."
Maggie shoved her foot in the door as he began to close it.
"Hold your horses, stallion!" Maggie grinned as she cocked the pistol she had pointed at his leg. She turned to the housewife "Lady, fork over the rest of the sweets or your hubby gets it!"
"Oh my God!" The Housewife practically shrieked.
"I don't wanna hear about your religion, I want to hear candy hitting the inside of my bag!" Maggie told her.
The Housewife's hands shook as she dumped the rest of the candy into Maggie's sack.
"And as for you..." Maggie turned to her husband. "I think my Daddy would like a pocket watch like yours..."
The husband slowly and carefully unclipped the pocket watch from the inside of his waistcoat. "Here! Take it!" He tossed it into her sack.
"Thank you! Happy Halloween!" Maggie grinned, walking away.
"How'd you do, my little bloodsucker?" Jack asked her as she came back.
"HELP! POLICE!" The Housewife shrieked from her doorway.
"What did you do?" Jack asked her.
"Do you want to know how I did or what I did?" Maggie asked. "Make up your mind, man!"
Captain Jack grabbed Maggie and ran, as a pair of Redcoats came stamping down the street to investigate the Housewife's shrieks.
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile just about two blocks away, Captain Jorgan and Mina were lurking in a shadowy alley. Well... Jorgan was, Mina was just walking on the sidewalk like a normal person.
"How do you to expect to use the element of surprise, if you don't remain in the shadows?" Jorgan asked her, annoyed.
"I don't need the element of surprise" Mina told him.
"Well then, how will you catch your prey?" Jorgan asked.
"I don't want to catch prey! I don't want to hide in the shadows! I don't want to be A VAMPIRE!" Mina shouted. "And I don't know any other way to make you understand that!"
"You can't just stop being who you are!" Her father snapped.
"You mean What I am!" Mina hissed.
"What you are... is a disobedient child who has become obsessed with a fantasy that will never come true!" Jorgan said coldly. "Now get into these shadows and choose your prey! Cause we're not stopping for another bite on the way home!"
"GO BITE YOURSELF!" Mina shrieked before transforming herself into a bat and flying off.
"Mina Lugosi Stoker!" Her Father scolded her with her full name. "Don't you fly away from your father when he's talking to you!"
He transformed into his bat self and took off after her.
☠🧛♀️☠
"Magnolia Morgan Sparrow!" Captain Jack scolded his own daughter. "What did I tell you before we left the Pearl?! ...What did I tell you?"
"Don't pull any crimes because we don't want to draw attention to ourselves..." Maggie recited in monotone.
"And what did you do...?" Jack asked her.
Maggie avoided his angry gaze. "...I got you a pocket watch?" She offered him the husband's watch.
"Well, I've gotten fed up with you disobeying my orders!" Jack told her. "I'm your Father and the Captain! Why can't you just do as I tell you? For goodness sake girl, does nothing I say ever get through to you?!"
Maggie peered at his face. "Is one of your eyebrows shorter than the other?" She asked.
"Magnolia!" Jack snapped.
"Relax! Those domestic ding-dong's made a big deal out of nothing!" Maggie shrugged. "I only loaded the pistol with blanks!"
"And you still have no business carrying around a firearm!" Jack scowled, snatching the weapon from her. "You know the rules! No firearms until you're thirteen! ...Unless you get a boyfriend, then Daddy will buy you two pistols! One for your purse and the other to hang on your hip!"
"Sometimes I think you're just making these rules up as you go along..." Maggie shook her head.
Captain Jack glared at her. "Listen to me, if you don't smarten up and follow orders, we're going back to the Pearl" Her Father said. "Now come along!"
Maggie growled under her breath. She hated when her Father ordered her about like she was just another member of his crew. He may be the Captain of the Black Pearl, but she was his daughter! She was his family and you can't order your family around! Maggie just wanted to have fun and get sweets, but Jack had to go and shove his little-to-non-existing superiority in her face.
Maggie slowed down as Jack walked ahead and then ran off down the street in the opposite direction. She figured she could make her father feel guilty if she disappeared for a bit. Once he noticed she was gone, he'd panic and learn his lesson when by the time she came back. Besides he was only slowing her down anyway.
Maggie was walking near the entrance of an alleyway when out of nowhere, a bat came swooping out the shadows and smacked directly into her face. Maggie jumped and began flailing her arms around, trying to get the bat off her face. What if it had rabies?!
The bat fell and landed on the street in front of her. But when Maggie looked down, the bat was gone and in it's place was a girl... a girl who looked like her exact double! She was even wearing the same dress! ...Which in retrospect, was kinda embarrassing. Nobody liked being caught wearing the same dress at the same time.
Mina stood up and both girls stared at each other in shock. What are the odd of meeting someone who looks identical to you?
"Who are you?" They both asked each other.
"Maggie!" Came Captain Jack's voice down the street.
"Mina!" Came Captain Jorgan's voice overhead.
"Gotta go!" Both girls said in unison.
They both ran off in the opposite direction as the other. Unaware of why or who the other one was running away from.
Mina Stoker ran down the street, it was times like this she wished she could harness her vampire speed. But that wouldn't come for another fifty years.
"Maggie! There you are!" A strange man in dreadlocks and eyeliner said. "What do you think you're doing, running off like tha--" he stopped short when Maggie ran right past him. "Maggie!"
Mina continued running, not knowing he was referring to her. Captain Jack grabbed her by her feathered collar and yanked her over to him.
"And where do you think you're going, Missy?" Jack asked her.
Mina hissed at him. "Let me go!" She told him. "You'll be sorry!"
"Not as sorry as you're going to be when I get you back to the Pearl!" Jack told her. "You think it's funny running off like that? There are a dozen different things that could have happened to you! Look at the sky! It's a full moon, all the weird-o's are out!"
Mina stared up at him. "You got that right!" She told him.
Jack glared at her. "Right! That's it we're going back to the Pearl right now!" Jack snapped. "Let's go! And you better invest in a snorkel, cause you're gonna be scrapping barnacles off the Pearl's haul tomorrow morning!"
"What Pearl?" Mina asked clueless.
"Keep it up, funny girl!" Jack told her. "Jokes won't get you out of this one!"
"No! Let me go!" Mina struggled as he pulled her down the street. "Help! Stranger danger! Stranger danger! This lunatic is trying to kidnap me!"
Jack placed a hand over her mouth as some people nearby turned their heads in their direction.
He chuckled nervously. "You know how kids get when there all jumped up on sweets...?" Jack reassured them. "Hyperactive little monkey's, aren't they?"
☠🧛♀️☠
While all of this was going on, Maggie was running down the alleyway, dodging crates and barrels and ducking under low-hanging clothesline's as she went. Until she felt a hand grip her shoulder and pull her back.
Maggie's heart stopped thinking it was Captain Jack, but when she glanced over her shoulder she was surprised to see a pale man in a black waist coat and long trench coat.
"There you are!" The man said. "Now what was that you said to me? I can 'go what myself'?"
Maggie's eyes widened. "Mister, I know what your insinuating" she told him. "But I'm not saying it aloud."
"Oh! So suddenly you don't have a chamber pot mouth, Mina?" He crossed his arms, nodding.
"Whatchu just call me?" Maggie quirked an eyebrow.
"Mina Stoker! You can beat around the bush all you like, but there will still be punishment" He told her sternly.
"You can't punish me!" Maggie exclaimed. "You're not my Daddy! And stop calling me Mina! I'm not Mina! I'll have you know I'm average-sized for my age!"
Count Jorgan stared her down. "Let's go!" He commanded.
"Go? Go where?" Maggie asked.
"Back to The Darkened Dusk!" Captain Jorgan told her. "Come on, quickly now!"
"I'm not going anywhere with you!" Maggie said. "I don't even-- AHHH!"
Maggie screamed as the man did a quick leap into the air and transformed into a black bat that was about as big as a hawk before her very eyes.
"Mina! Let's go! We're burning moonlight!" He told her in bat form.
"You're-You're-You're..." Maggie stuttered in shock.
"I'm getting impatient, Missy!" Captain Jorgan stated annoyed. "Don't make me carry you like when you were an infant!"
"Stay away from me!" Maggie took off in the other direction.
Maggie ran for her life. Despite trying to convince her father of the existence of vampires earlier, but she never imagined they actually existed!
Maggie looked down as she ran and screamed. Her feet weren't even on the ground, they were dangling twenty feet in the air. She glanced up and saw the bat had snatched her up by the back of her shirt.
"I don't know where you're taking me" Maggie yelled up to him. "But wherever it is, there had better be sweets!"
☠🧛♀️☠
Obviously Maggie wasn't the only one who was confused. Mina Stoker was still completely baffled and scared as Captain Jack brought her back to the Black Pearl. As Jack dragged Mina across the deck, she stared up nervously at the crew of the Black Pearl. She had never been around so many humans before, at least not without adult supervision. She felt so exposed and so shy. Could they tell she wasn't this Maggie person? Could they tell she was a vampire? And what would they do to her if they found out?
Captain Jack took her to Maggie's Cabin and passed her a basin and a pitcher of warm water.
"Wash off that makeup and shed the costume" Jack told her. "And go straight to bed."
"But..." Mina stammered.
"No buts!" Jack told her. "I don't think you realize just how dangerous that stunt you pulled tonight really was! You know better than to run off in a new town like that, Maggie!"
"But I'm not Maggie!" Mina exclaimed.
"Yes, I know" Jack sighed. "You're a vampire..."
"Exactly!" Mina nodded hopefully.
"...But the time for pretending is over!" Jack continued. "You had your fun, but Halloween is over now. So go back to being Maggie and get to bed!"
"Bed?!" Mina squeaked. "But the moon's still up! I don't have to go to bed till sunrise!"
"Nice try" Jack told her. "But you know you're bedtime is at nine o'clock every night, Miss Bloodsucker."
Captain Jack left the room, leaving her alone to change. Little Mina stared around the strange bedroom, she was trapped in an unfamiliar setting, surrounded by unfamiliar people on an unfamiliar ship. And what's worst, they all think she's human!
"He thinks I'm lying... He thinks I'm just another human child in a costume..." she said to herself. "One can't help but feel a little insulted..."
Nevertheless Mina figured this man meant her no harm. From the way he spoke to her she assumed he had mistaken her for his daughter. Thus she decided to listen to him and take on the guise of this Maggie girl until she could find a way home. She washed her face and hands with the basin and pitcher and combed out her hair, before changing into a nightgown she found draped over the bed. Despite being white, it seemed identical in style to the black one she had at home.
Although there was one thing that stumped Mina in her bedtime routine...
"Where's the coffin?" She wondered aloud, her eyes scanning the room.
She went around feeling the walls, assuming that there would be a pull out coffin somewhere. No such luck.
Captain Jack returned to tuck her in and found her standing in the room, looking around perplexed.
"Maggie, when I said get to bed, that usually concludes with you actually in the bed" he stated in an obvious tone.
"Right!" Mina nodded. "And that is...?"
Jack sighed, shaking his head as he picked her up and placed her in her bed.
Mina was taken back by the cushiony feeling of the bed, she was practically sinking into the soft bedding. With her coffin there was just a peice of slightly stuffed velvet between her and the bottom of it. Her father also made sure to sprinkle the soil of their homeland in Romania to ensure comfort. Mina ran her fingers along the edge of the quilted comforter that Jack had tucked her in with. It was soft too.
Suddenly Jack leaned down to kiss her, Mina panicked and turned her face away.
"What? I can't get a goodnight kiss?" Jack asked.
"I... have a cold...?" Mina lied. Human's get those... right? She thought to herself.
Jack saw right through her lie. Although he looked more sad, then suspicious.
"Fine" he said. "But cold or no cold, you're still getting punished tomorrow! Goodnight."
"Goodnight" Mina said as he left the room.
She stared up at the ceiling in the darkness. She wasn't used to sleeping in a bed... come to think of it, she wasn't used to sleeping at night either.
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile Maggie could barely keep her eyes open as Captain Jorgan landed with her aboard his ship, The Darkened Dusk. A galleon ship with a blackened haul like the Pearl, but the railing and the woodwork on the aft had been painted blood red. And the tattered white sails above head, seemed to have red paint splattered across them. Upon further staring, Maggie realized it wasn't paint splattered across those sails... it was blood!
Now she was wide awake...
As Captain Jorgan transformed back into a vampire, Maggie turned to face him.
"You better watch yourself, I know how to handle Vampires!" Maggie told him. "I've fought off monsters way bigger than you!"
"What are you talking about?" Jorgan looked at her with confusion.
"What do you want with me?" Maggie shot back.
Captain Jorgan stared at her, crossing his arms. "You know, I do believe I know what this is all about" he nodded. "I see what your doing, Mina Stoker."
"Maggie!" She corrected.
"Mina!" He insisted. "You are pretending to be a human as some form of protest against my not allowing you to become a 'vegetable-atarian'. I must say it's better than the silent treatment you gave after I refused to buy you a new guillotine for your dollies."
"Vegetable-atarian...?" Maggie asked, baffled.
"Playing naive, are we?" Jorgan pointed out. "Very well. But you can't deny who you are forever. Eventually you will need to feed and when you do, Daddy'll be waiting with a nice half drained lifeless corpse ready for you to suckle on."
Maggie wrinkled her nose. "You are sick, messed up old man!" She told him.
"Old?!" Jorgan exclaimed. "This coming from a child of two-hundred and sixty-eight years!"
"I'm not Mina!" Maggie groaned in frustration. "It figures... the one time in my life I tell the truth and nobody believes me!"
"You can carry on with this charade all you want" Jorgan shook his head. "Although you should be getting to your coffin, my little human..."
"Coffin?!" Maggie squawked.
Jorgan ushered Maggie into a cabin with black woodwork on the walls, the window was covered by thick black curtains to keep the sunlight out. A number of creepy dolls lined the shelves on the other side of the room. Maggie hated dolls, even the non creepy ones, that's why she kept stuffed animals instead.
Maggie wasn't sure who this Mina lass was and she was having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that vampires were real. However Maggie was often curious when it came to witnessing something new, prehaps she would carry on this charade of being Mina... whoever she was? She wanted to live amongst the vampires and see what they were like. She could take notes and sell them to science! Or at least to some crackpot newspaper! They'd call her Maggie Sparrow, Pirate/Supernatural Primatologist! It has a nice ring to it... although Maggie wasn't too certain on how to pronounce Primatologist. Pree-mat-ollow-geest? Pri-ma-toll-o-guy-st?
Maggie was enjoying the thought of studying the vampires, until she noticed a shiny black coffin, with blood red satin lining the inside.
"Hop in, Baby Bat!" Jorgan patted the inside of it.
"Oh... no..." Maggie said, edging back towards the door.
"Oh... yes!" Jorgan mimicked her. "It's bedtime. The sun comes up in an hour. You know that!"
He picked Maggie up and plopped her down into the coffin. But when he went to shut the coffin's lid, Maggie panicked.
"Don't!" Maggie told him. "I wouldn't be able to breathe!"
"Mina, don't be silly!" Jorgan smiled down at her. "You're a vampire, you don't need to breathe!"
He closed the lid and Maggie heard the click of a latch. Then she heard Captain Jorgan's footsteps receding and the door to the room slam shut. She gulped and tried to take short breaths, hoping not to suck up all the oxygen she had.
As Maggie tried to punch and kick her way out from the side of the coffin, she discovered a part of the coffin slid open like a window. She slid it all the way open, at least she would be able to get some air like that.
Maggie yawned, she had been up all night so she was feeling tired. She decided to make the best of a messed up situation and snuggled into the coffin's velvet padding. As she began drifting off to sleep, she stared out the tiny opening of the coffin and what little light came from it. Wondering if her father had noticed she was missing yet...
...And if he hasn't, how long would it take him to?
☠🧛♀️☠
As the sun rose above the Black Pearl, Mina was just beginning to drift off to sleep... before Captain Jack came bursting into the room.
"Let's go, Missy!" He said. "Up and at 'em! If you can run away and scare me senseless, you can get up and clean me ship top to bottom!"
"No!" Mina groaned, tugging the covers around herself and rolling over.
But Jack was having none of it. He walked to the edge of the bed and yanked the covers off of her.
"Let's go! Up! Up! Up!" He lightly tapped her forehead.
"No! No! No!" Mina shot back, trying to take the covers back from him.
"Listen here, Missy!" Captain Jack scolded. "I've had it! Now you're going to be punished wither you like it or not! No more Mr. Nice Daddy! I'm putting my foot down! Figuratively and literally!" He stomped his foot and there was a loud cracking sound.
"Was that your knee?" Mina asked.
"Yeah..." Jack winced. He limped over and sat on the bed.
Mina layed back down and began to fall back asleep.
"I said get up!" Jack told her.
"Too early!" Mina moaned.
"Too early?! It's eight a.m!" Jack told her. "Usually you're up at the crack of dawn, perched on the edge of my bed going Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo! What's wrong? Suddenly you're not a little rooster? Are we going to have throw you in the soup pot?"
Mina's eyes popped open. Was that how human's punished their children for not getting out of bed?! By making soup out of them?! Mina didn't want to risk it, so she forced herself to get out of bed.
"That's better!" Jack told her. "Now hurry up and get dressed. The Cook has your breakfast waiting and then you're gonna start your punishment by scrubbing the deck!"
Jack left her to change and Mina went over the wardrobe on one end of the room. Inside there was a white shirt with a black vest and a pair of black boots with black trousers and a red skirt. Mina put it all on and went to exit the room, but as she opened the door... the sunlight cane pouring in!
Mina hissed and quickly slammed the door close. That Jack person must've opened the curtain in his cabin! Now how was she supposed to survive in sunlight without burning up?
"Maggie!" Jack called from the ship's galley. "Hurry up! Your breakfast is getting cold! And the crew is beginning to call dibs on who gets it!
Mina searched the room for something to block out the light. Luckily she found something in the back of the closet that would work perfectly.
Mina walked into the ship's galley and crew all turned one by one to look at her. She took a seat beside Jack and turned to the crew, who was still looking at her.
"What?" Mina asked.
"Miss Maggie, you do realize it's bad luck to open an umbrella indoors, don't you?" Mr. Gibbs asked her.
"But I need it..." Mina replied.
"What for?" Scrum asked her. "Ain't a drop of rain outside! Not even a cloud in the sky!"
"Oh! I know what this is!" Captain Jack nodded. "Tell me Maggie, just how long do you intend to keep up this whole vampire charade?"
"Vampire?" Scrum questioned.
"Maggie went out trick-or-treating as a vampire last night" Jack explained. "But she ran off alone and scared me, so now she's carrying on her pretending as some form of protest."
The crew nodded.
"But I'm not pretending!" Mina insisted. "I'm a real Vampire! My name is Mina Stoker and I would like to go home right now please!"
"Yes, and I'm Captain Dracula of the S.S Bloodsucker!" Jack said sarcastically. "But none of that is going to stop you from receiving your punishment!"
"You're not gonna throw me in the soup pot, are you...?" Mina whimpered.
Jack and the crew looked at each other, before bursting into laughter. Mina frowned and crossed her arms.
"You're so funny sometimes, Miss Maggie!" Scrum patted her back.
Jack wiped a tear from his eyes. "Keep the umbrella if you must, Luv" he told her. "But you're still getting your punishment!"
As Jack and the crew left the galley, Mr. Gibbs turned to Jack. "Are you sure, Maggie's alright Cap'n?" He asked.
"She's fine! She's just trying to get out of being punished" Jack told his first mate.
"But have you not notice how pale she looks?" Mr. Gibbs said. "Maybe she is coming down with something..."
Jack glanced back at Maggie as she gagged on her breakfast.
"You might be right..." Jack nodded. "She isn't eating, she didn't seem to sleep well. And she did mention having a cold last night..."
Mina stared down at the oatmeal that was supposed to be her breakfast. At least she thought it was oatmeal... it had the consistency of oatmeal, but it was grey. Still Mina attempted to swallow a few bites to keep her strength up. Usually her father would wake up early, just after dusk and kill a crow or a sheep and bring it to her to drink from. A big bloody crow sounded really good right now, because whatever animal the pirates put in the oatmeal, smells like it's been dead a while.
"Maggie" Jack asked sitting back down beside her. "Are you feeling like yourself, Luv?"
"Not really..." Mina answered truthfully.
Jack placed the back of his hand on her forehead and immediately pulled it away. "You're freezing!" He told her.
"Yeah, so?" Mina asked. What were human children suppose to feel like?
"You've never been that cold!" Jack felt her arms. "Oh my goodness! You're like ice!" He took off his coat and wrapped it around her her. "We'll discuss your punishment later, right now you're going back to bed!"
"Alright!" Mina smiled, happy to be able to go back to sleep.
"And I'll send someone ashore to retrieve a doctor right away!" Jack told her.
Mina's eyes widened. A doctor? A human doctor?! He'd be able to tell she was a vampire! Then who knows what the pirate's will do to her when they find out she isn't this Maggie girl?
"Um... I-I don't think a doctor is necessary" Mina said.
"I know you don't trust Doctor's, Luv" Jack said, tucking her into bed. "But remember there only there to help."
Captain Jack left her to rest and as Mina layed back in bed, she worried about seeing the doctor. But there was an even worst problem...
She hadn't had any blood since yesterday morning. She needed to feed or else her vampire nature would take full control and she would go on a feeding frenzy! She would lose control and slaughter everyone aboard the ship! She needed blood and quick...
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile on The Darkened Dusk, Maggie woke up earlier than everyone else. While the vampire crew was asleep in their coffins below deck, Maggie snuck down to the ship's galley for a bite to eat. She searched the pantries, hoping to find an apple or a hardtack biscuit or something. But all she found were jars of pickled insects, dried spiders in bags and yellowish slime that smelled like inside of her father's boots.
She found a barrel of what she assumed would be fish or salted meat, but upon opening it she found it was filled with blood.
Suddenly the door to the pantry slammed shut behind her, shrouding the small room in darkness. Maggie's breath hitched as she stared at the door. At least she thought that was the door, she couldn't even make out her own hand in the pitch darkness.
She began to fondle the walls of the pantry trying to reach the door handle, when a pair of arms snaked their way around her.
"Boo!" Someone whispered in her ear.
Maggie screamed, elbowing the person in the ribs and trying to get away. The person stumbled, but kept their grip on her. The door opened and the person carried Maggie out and let her go.
She looked up and found it was just Captain Jorgan.
"What's the matter?" Jorgan asked her. "You act like this is the first time we played Darkness Tag?"
"Darkness Tag...? Darkness Tag! Right! Now I remember!" Maggie nodded.
"Mm-hmm" Jorgan nodded skeptically. "What are you doing up at this hour anyway?" He looked at her "Are you feeling alright, Dear? You seem to have a little color in your cheeks...?"
"I'm fine..." Maggie answered. "I was just a little hungry, is all..."
"Oh! Well, I did get you a little treat last night..." Jorgan reached into his pocket. "Close your eyes..."
Maggie closed one eye.
Jorgan shot her a playfully stern look. "Both of them!" He said.
Maggie grinned and shut both her eyes.
"Hold out your hands..." Jorgan said.
Maggie cupped her hands in front of her and felt Jorgan place something in her hands. It felt like a bunch of fish skin... only it was moving...
Maggie opened her eyes and screamed. It was a snake! A live snake!
She dropped it and the snake slithered across one of her boots as it slithered out of the room.
"Why did you let it get away?" Jorgan asked.
"Why did it give me that?!" Maggie shrieked.
"Their your favorite!" Jorgan told her. "Usually you bite the head off of it and suck the blood right out of the neck hole!"
"Eww!" Maggie shuddered just thinking about it.
"Are you feeling alright, Mina?" He asked her.
"Fine!" Maggie recovered from the snake incident.
Only Maggie wasn't fine! She had had enough of this place. She was hungry, she missed her own bed, she was scared senseless by a snake. She was even beginning to miss her Daddy and the crew! She didn't want to stay and study vampire's anymore, she wanted to go back to her own ship and study how dimwitted the crew was! And yes, there was a lot of information that could be studied from that alone!
"Well... don't worry about the snake!" Jorgan told her. "It'll soon be sundown soon anyway. We'll be hunting on a ship, so there should be plenty of blood and victims of your choosing."
Maggie grinned. Maybe when the Vampires go out for the night, she could run back to her ship!
"Oh good!" Maggie fibbed. "What ship are we hitting up tonight?"
"A new ship that sailed into port just a few days ago..." Jorgan explained. "...The Black Pearl."
Maggie's eyes widened. "Oh! Great!" She forced a smile. "I'm... uh-I'm gonna go back to my cabin and catch a few more Z's for tonight then!"
Maggie raced back to the cabin she was in and shut the door. Her father and crewmates were going to be ambushed and slaughtered by a crew of vampires! She had to stop them! But how to do so without the vampires getting suspicious...?
Maggie thought back to her knowledge of vampire's, things she had read. Luckily vampire's had a lot of weaknesses. They were attacking at night, so there was no chance Maggie could lure them into sunlight. However they were repelled by garlic and holy water was said to burn vampire skin like acid. A wooden stake to the heart would kill them instantly... although Maggie was pretty sure anyone would die if they were stabbed in the heart. That's just common knowledge!
Nevertheless, Maggie knew she needed supplies. She needed ammunition, more than the bullets and pistols that the crew of the Black Pearl carried. Because wither she liked it or not, tonight there was going to be a war on the Black Pearl...
...Pirates vs. Vampirate's!
☠🧛♀️☠
While Maggie was preparing for an all out war, Mina was struggling to fight the war between her sanity and her vampiric thirst for blood.
Mina layed in Maggie's bed, tossing and turning. She refused to fall asleep all day, she was scared if she fell asleep her hunger would overtake her completely and she'd attack everyone on board!
Mina only ever went on a feeding frenzy once before in her life, when she was only a hundred and forty-seven years old-- just a little vampire toddler. She had missed her snack time earlier that evening, so that when her Father and his crew boarded a victim ship, she went mad and feasted on every man she could. She guzzled the Captain, she swilled the First Mate, she drained the Helmsman, she chugged the Bosun and she gulped down the Cook! And you don't even want to know what she did to their pet parrot... let's just say it involved a fire and eleven herbs and spices!
The bottom line is, Mina had no control over it and she hated going through it. But she couldn't help it, it was her body's natural response to being denied blood. Just like how human's have reflexes in their muscles.
Still Mina knew she couldn't let it happen, she took deep breaths and tried not to think about blood. She tried not to think about the sweet, coppery taste of it. Or the thick, warm texture and how it slid down her throat like warm milk and honey...
Suddenly Mina's mouth was forced open, she felt her teeth... Fangs! Her fangs had popped out! That was the first warning sign of a feeding frenzy!
Mina gasped as there was a knock at the door.
"Maggie dearest! It's Daddy" Captain Jack said, through the door. "I have the doctor with me. Are you decent?"
"Just a second!" Mina called back.
She lept out of bed and searched the drawers of Maggie's wardrobe. She found a scarf and tied it around her mouth and nose. This way they wouldn't be able to see her fangs and she wouldn't be able to smell their scent. The smell of potential victims would only increase her body's need for a feeding frenzy.
She jumped back into bed. "You may enter..." she called.
Jack entered the room followed by a doctor carrying a medical bag, his stethoscope swaying back and forth as he walked.
"Why do you have a scarf on your face?" Jack asked her.
"Uh... I-I don't want you or the doctor to catch what I have..." she lied.
"Oh..." Jack nodded.
"So what's this, Maggie...? I hear you're not feeling well?" The Doctor asked her, stepping forward.
Mina shyed away when the doctor tried to put the stethoscope on her chest. She knew he wouldn't find a heartbeat in her.
"Don't be scared, Luv" Jack told her. "The doctor just wants to examine you and make sure everything's alright."
"It's quite alright, Captain" The Doctor said. "How about we start with taking your tempature, huh?"
As the doctor stuck the thermometer under the scarf and into her mouth, Mina's stomach growled.
"She probably hungry" Jack nodded. "She's been resting all day and hasn't eaten much."
"Well, the fact that she still has an appetite is a good sign" The Doctor agreed.
"Be right back, Dearest" Jack told her. "I'll see if I can't find you a snack."
Captain Jack left for the galley, leaving Mina and the Doctor all alone.
"Let's see what the verdict is, shall we?" The doctor smiled, pulling the thermometer from her mouth and staring at the reading.
He did a double take. The thermometer said her temperature was 37.6 Degrees Celsius! That was impossible! The average temperature of a human being was 98.6! If her body temperature got that low, she'd have to be... dead?!
The doctor stared at Mina, who stared back innocently.
"I think I'm in need of a new thermometer" he chuckled. "This one seems to be on the fritz!"
Mina sighed in relief. Guess he's never treated an undead patient before! She thought.
"In the meantime, I'll just mark your tempature down as N/A..." he picked up his clipboard and flipped through the pages.
Suddenly he dropped the clipboard and held his finger. "Ouch!" He winced. "Ooh! Papercut!"
For the Doctor it was painful, but for Mina... it was the final temptation.
Mina reached out and snatched his wrist. "Let me kiss it..." she said sweetly. "...and make it all better!"
Before the doctor could say anything more, she brought his hand, under the scarf, to her mouth and bit it.
"Ow! What are you doing?!" The doctor pulled his hand away, accidentally yanking the scarf off her face.
He looked down at the bite marks on his finger and then looked up at Mina. "Your eyes..." he gasped. "What's wrong with your eyes...?"
Mina's pupils had turned to scarlet red slits, so small and thin, that her eyes almost looked completely white. She stood up on the bed and crouched down to the doctor's height, like an animal cornering it's prey. A wide malicious grin lit up her pale face.
"Why don't you tell me what's wrong with my eyes?" Mina in a distorted, high-pitched voice. "Isn't that your job, doctor?" She threw her head and let out a squealing and evil giggle.
☠🧛♀️☠
While all this was going on, Maggie tip-toed down the gangplank of the Darkened Dusk and headed into town. She snuck out as soon as she was certain that the Vampire Crew of the Darkened Dusk were asleep. She had thought about running back to the Black Pearl, but she knew Captain Jorgan would notice his daughter missing if she did. Besides Maggie could do a lot more sabotage damage to the Vampire's, if she remained under the guise of Mina.
Maggie looked behind her as she walked into the town market place, trying to make sure no members of the Darkened Dusk noticed her leaving. Once she was certain she was alone, Maggie headed over to a vegetable cart.
She began to employ a trick she'd learned from her father. She took out a flint and tinder kit she always kept on her person and held it over a nearby barrel of kerosene oil. Maggie then scraped the flint against the tinder, causing a spark to shoot out and allowing the barrel to instantly go up in flames!
Maggie walked away from the flaming barrel as the vegetable cart vendor took notice and ran to put it out. As he ripped off his apron and used it to swat at the flames, Maggie raced over to the now unattended cart and grabbed as much garlic as she could. She stuffed it in her satchel and filled her pockets, before walking face-paced away from the scene of the crime.
Next Maggie headed to the local church. She needed as holy water as much she could get!
Maggie found some empty bottles behind the local pub and tied them together with rope and slung them over her shoulders. She entered the church with all the bottles she could carry. But stopped short when she realized their was a baptism currently being held in the church.
Maggie shot a nervous smile to the congregation and the priest. "Begging your pardon!" She told them. "Just need to borrow a bit of the holy liquid here and I'll be out of your hair!"
The congregation stared at her confused, before turning back to the ceremony at hand. As the priest began to pour the holy water onto the baby's head, Maggie popped up between them.
"Sorry, Father! The other fonts were empty!" She told the priest. Maggie took the last of the empty bottles and stuck them in the baptismal font.
Maggie stared at the baby in the white christening dress and cooed. "Aww! She's lovely!" She told the parents.
"It's a boy" the mother informed her.
Maggie stared closer at the kid. "Oh... prehaps if you put him in a handsome little suit!"
She topped off the last of the bottles and took her leave. "Alright! Congratulations! Mozel tov! Keep up the good work, Father!" She patted the priest on the back, before rushing out of the church.
Last but not least, Maggie headed to the local Armory shop, she needed guns and lots of them with silver bullets.
She walked into the shop and began browsing the selection of firearms, from rifles to pistols. Finally she headed to the front desk and requested the assistance of the store manager, a thin man with a short graying beard and gunpowder under his fingernails.
"I'm afraid we don't sell toy guns, Little Missy" he told Maggie.
"Good, cause I'm not looking for toys" Maggie stated. "However I will be needing several of the best blunderbuss rifles you got, four brown bess rifles, nine carbine muskets, twelve flintlock's, eight wall guns and seventeen of the potzdam muskets. Ooh! And all the silver bullets you have!"
The shop owner stared at her in slight shock. "Are you headed into battle?" He chuckled lightly.
"Something of that proportion..." Maggie shrugged.
"I'm afraid I can't sell any firearms to a child" the shop owner informed her.
"Yeah... cause there's no way an adult would use a gun for evil intentions..." Maggie said sarcastically.
"I might be able to help you out though..." The shop owner said.
He escorted Maggie to the back of the shop and into an alleyway.
"Earlier this week I received a shipment of flintlock pistols from a new distributor" the shop owner explained. "But turns out they were faulty merchandise, all the pistols were missing their revolvers." He pulled a pistol out of the crate.
Maggie pick up one of the faulty pistols and discovered that the revolver mechanism was missing. Just the mussel and handle remained.
"You see?" The shop owner said. "There's nowhere to put the bullets! I was going to just going to throw them all out, but if you'd like to use them for playing pretend...?"
"Pretend...?" Maggie asked. "Oh! Yes! Pretend! Yes! I'll take them off your hands! Is it possible to have them delivered? My ship is right down at the docks."
"Certainly, just leave your ship's name at the front desk and we'll have them there by tonight" the shop owner said.
"Thank you, sir!" Maggie said.
As the shop owner left to get the necessary ledger for her to sign. Maggie took bottles of holy water she'd been carrying and attached them to the pistols. She uncorked and screwed the neck of the bottles into the barrel of the gun, placing the holy water where the bullet cartridge would've been.
Maggie tested it by pulling the trigger and the holy water squirted out of the barrel of the gun! It was a... a squirt gun!
After Maggie modified the rest of the guns, she arranged to have the garlic delivered along with the guns to the Black Pearl.
And not a moment too soon, the sun was beginning to set and the Vampire's would soon rise.
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile aboard the Black Pearl, Captain Jack had finished making Maggie's favorite dish: shrimp gumbo. She fell in love with it on their last trip through New Orleans. He put the bowl on a tray and headed up to Maggie's Cabin, but on the way he ran into Scrum.
"Cap'n? Do you know anything about a crate load of guns being delivered?" Scrum asked.
"Guns?" Jack asked. "I never ordered any guns."
"Well, some man from the local Armory just dropped off a whole crate of flintlock pistols with garlic!"
"Garlic?" Jack asked. "Oh! It's probably another one of Maggie's tricks. Garlic and guns, so we can defend ourselves against this vampire persona she's taken on! I'll tell you one thing, she'll be paying for that delivery not me!"
Captain Jack continued on his way, he was about ten steps from the door when the doctor came stumbling out of the room!
"Run!" He gasped. "Run for your lives! Before she swallows your soul!"
Jack stared in confusion as the doctor tore out of the room and towards the Pearl's gangplank.
"If this is about that mole on her back, I assure you it's just a birthmark!" Captain Jack called after him. "I have the same one on me right leg!"
However the doctor was long gone. So Jack continued into Maggie's Cabin.
"That doctor is a the most skittish bloke I ever--SON OF A BUGGER?!" Jack screamed and dropped the tray of shrimp gumbo upon seeing his daughter.
At least what he thought was his daughter. It's awfully hard to recognize one's offspring, when said offspring is clinging to the ceiling with extended claws and staring down at you with all-white eyes and an impossibly large smile. A smile which contained extended razor-sharp fangs!
"Maggie?!" Jack gasped.
Mina crawled up the wall like a spider, all the way to the ceiling. She turned her head all the way around to face a horrified Captain Jack.
"Maggie... I know you weren't really a normal kid" Jack told her gently. "In fact, you never did anything exactly like all the parenting books said you would! But this... this time... this time you're scaring Daddy, pet!"
Mina threw her head back and let out a high-pitched maniacal giggle.
"I'm gonna get you! I'm gonna get you!" She sang low and creepy. "Not another peep, time to go to sleep!"
"I'm a little teapot would've also sufficed..." Jack shuddered.
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile the crew of the Darkened Dusk was preparing for their nightly attack on the Black Pearl. Maggie joined them, while trying to conceal the holy water pistol she had hidden in the skirt of her dress.
The Vampirates began transforming into bats and taking flight over to where the Black Pearl was docked. Maggie bit her lip nervously, she couldn't turn into a bat!
"Uh... Daddy" She said to Captain Jorgan. "Would you mind giving me a lift? I wanna save my strength for catching victims..."
"You really want to start catching your own victims?" Jorgan raised an eyebrow. "I thought you wanted to be a vegetable-ee-ann?"
"I'm hungry" Maggie whined. "And I don't think vegetables are going to cut it!"
"That's my girl!" Jorgan patted her head, before changing into a bat grabbing her by the collar, flying her over to the Pearl.
Once they landed, the Vampirates fanned out and hid in the surrounding shadows of the ship, watching closely as the crew of the Black Pearl sat playing cards and drinking on the main deck. The Vampire crew grinned and licked their fangs in anticipation.
Maggie stared between the two pirate crews, nervously. She was a little relieved when she didn't see her father anywhere, prehaps he would survive at least. Still, she needed to warn the Pearl's crew, she needed some kind of alarm. But first she needed to get away the Vampirates, so they didn't try to stop her.
Maggie reached up and tugged on Captain Jorgan's coat tail. "Uh... Daddy, I need to use the little Vampire's room..." she whispered softly.
Captain Jorgan sighed under his breath. "How many have I told you, to go before we leave..." he whispered back. "Very well, go find a bathroom, I'll catch you a snack for when you return. Don't get caught!"
Maggie snuck off from the blood thirsty group, but instead of heading to the bathroom, she went straight for the Pearl's cannon's on the aft deck. She carefully placed an iron cannonball into the muzzle and lit the fuse before jumping back and covering her ears. The cannon's fuse fizzled out and Maggie squeezed her eyes shut...
...only nothing happened. No ka-bang! No ka-boom! No warning for the crew!
"Peice of junk!" Maggie gave the useless cannon a hard kick.
BANG!!!
The cannon shot off and crew of the Black Pearl jumped.
"What in the name of Anne Bonny's perky bosom was that?!" Mr. Gibbs shouted. "Who set off that cannon?!"
The crew of the Black Pearl turned and noticed the Crew of Vampirates behind them. The crew of the Darkened Dusk froze upon being spotted.
"Who are they?" Marty asked.
The Vampirate's took this opportunity to strike, bearing their fangs and leaping at the crew of the Pearl.
The Pirate's jumped back and drew their pistols and swords, slashing and shooting at the Vampirate's in defense. But they soon realized it was hopeless, as the Vampirate's healed just as quickly as they could injure them!
Maggie found the crate of holy water pistols and garlic near the helm and tossed them down to the crew of the Black Pearl.
"Boys! Pistols and swords won't work! Use these!" She called to them. "Whatever you do, don't let them bite you!"
Scrum studied the holy water pistol Maggie had tossed to him. Suddenly one of the Vampirate's grabbed him from behind, Scrum screamed and pulled the trigger of the water pistol. Holy water squirted out and burned the Vampirate's eyes, who recoiled in pain.
The crew of the Black Pearl watch this and followed suit, squirting the pistols and throwing bulbs of garlic at the Vampirate's to keep them at bay.
"Mina! Why?" Captain Jorgan shouted up to her, shocked by his daughter's sudden betrayal.
"Because I told you, I'm not Mina!" Maggie told him. "I'm--"
"--Maggie!" Mr. Gibbs finished for her, rushing up to her in the chaos. "What are you doing here? I thought you were sick?"
"Sick?" Maggie asked. "I've been gone since last night! Nice to know I was so missed..."
"That's impossible!" Mr. Gibbs told her. He paused to turn and squirt one Vampirate's who tried to climb the stairs and bite his ankle. "The Captain brought you back last night, you were with us at breakfast this morning!"
"No, I wasn't--" Suddenly Maggie put the peices together. Captain Jorgan thought she was a little girl named Mina... The little girl ran into trick-or-treating looked identical to her...
Her Father must've brought home Mina Stoker thinking she was her!
Maggie snapped out of her shock, just in time to notice a vampirate creeping up behind Mr. Gibbs. She ripped a bulb off her garlic necklace and threw it right into the Vampirate's gaping mouth. He fell to the deck choking on it.
"Gibbs! Where's my Dad now?!" Maggie asked him.
"He's in your cabin with you!" Mr. Gibbs replied, firing another round of holy water at a vampirate that came flying up on Maggie's left. "...Or at least, someone he thinks be you!"
"You hold things down here! I got a dimwitted Daddy to save!" Maggie grabbed the holy water pistol from her skirt and headed down below to her cabin.
☠🧛♀️☠
"Maggie, my Luv! There's no need for this!" Captain Jack tried to soothe his suddenly satanic daughter.
At the moment, the situation was awfully one-sided. Mina was crawling around the floor on all fours, while Jack was standing on Maggie's writing desk, too terrified to come down. It was a strange and unnerving feeling to be afraid of your own child. Your own flesh and blood! Or rather... a child that use to be of flesh and blood.
Mina growled deep in her throat as she snapped her jaws at Jack's ankles. "I crave the blood of the innocents!" She roared in a deep demonic voice.
"Sweetheart, if you settle down and behave, Daddy will get you some ice cream?" Jack offered, smiling nervously.
"NOOOO!" Mina shrieked, causing the whole room to shake.
"Oh! Alright! Of course! I'm sorry! I thought you liked ice cream?" Captain Jack said quickly. "My God... and I thought the terrible two's was bad." He muttered to himself.
Suddenly the door of the cabin burst open
Captain Jack and Mina both turned to find...
"Maggie?!" Captain Jack exclaimed. He stared between the demonic Maggie in front of him and the normal Maggie in the doorway. "Girls... I've always seen double. But it was never this bad!"
"Daddy! What in the heckity-heck is going on here?" The real Maggie told him. "I leave you alone for a whole day and look what happens? You let a blood-sucking parasite onto the Pearl!" Maggie did a double take when she saw Mina. "AND WHAT IS IT DOING IN MY CLOTHES?!"
"It?!" Mina growled. "I am not an it!"
"That's really a matter of opinion, dearie..." Maggie's eyes widened as she looked into Mina's whited-out ones.
Mina lunged at Maggie, her fangs bared menacingly. Maggie squirted her with her holy water pistol, burning Mina across her shoulder.
Maggie grabbed her father's wrist and pulled him outside the cabin slamming the door shut with Mina inside. Captain Jack ran to push his nightstand in front of the door, barricading Mina from opening it. Maggie held the nightstand in place as Jack shoved his writing desk in front of the door as well.
"There!" Captain Jack panted. "There's no way she's getting out of there now!"
Mina turned the door knob and opened the door. Apparently Jack and Maggie were so busy barricading the door, they forgot that when the door to Maggie's Cabin opened, the door swung into the room, not outside of it.
Maggie and Jack looked at each other, then screamed and made a run for the main deck as Mina hissed and lunged at them.
Captain Jack ran until he turned around and noticed that Maggie wasn't behind him anymore. All that was left was her garlic necklace and her holy water pistol lying on the deck in her place.
"DADDY!" Jack heard her scream.
Captain Jack looked up and saw that Mina had grabbed Maggie and the two were now hovering in air above, near the rigging of the Pearl. The two wrestled in mid air as Maggie fought to keep Mina's fangs away from her neck.
"Daddy! Shoot!" One girl shouted to him. "Shoot her before she bites me! Coffins are not as comfortable as they look!"
"No, Daddy! She's lying!" The other girl yelled. "I'm Maggie, she's Mina!"
Jack stared between the two little girls hovering in the air. They were identical! If he shot the vampire girl with holy water, she would burn and he could save Maggie! But if he chose the wrong girl, he'll just give the vampire a chance to bite his daughter! And there were so far out of range there was no way he could shoot them both with holy water. It had to be one shot! But which girl was which?!
"Uh..." Captain Jack moaned nervously. "Eh..."
One of the girls stared at him. "Oh my g-- seriously?!" She told him. "You can't tell your own kid, from a member of the undead?!"
"Luv, my eyesight isn't that good on the best of days!" Jack shrugged.
"Don't you call her Luv!" One of them said. "When I'm Maggie!"
"Step aside, you oxygen-sucking ninny!" Captain Jorgan shoved Jack out of the way. "I'm going to settle this once and for all!" He cocked his pistol at the girls. Only this one fired bullets, not holy water!
Jack grabbed him from behind and pointed the holy water pistol at his head. "Don't you dare shoot my Maggie!" He told the Vampirate.
Captain Jorgan point his pistol at Jack's head. "Don't you dare shoot my Mina!" He told the pirate.
"It's a Mexican stand-off!" Maggie cried, looking down at them. "They're gonna end up killing each other!"
"Someone's gonna get hurt!" Mina whimpered. "I just wanted my Daddy to see that the human's way of life wasn't so bad! Not see him die!"
"You think I wanna see my Daddy die?!" Maggie told her. "We have to stop them!"
Maggie and Mina landed on the deck in front of their fathers.
Maggie threw her hands up. "We both surrender!" She announced. "We will not show resistance! Now quit your stupid fighting! Good grief! Men your age fighting like two wild little boy's! Have you no shame?"
"You're telling me, mine's nine hundred and fifty years old!" Mina told her.
"That's not for another eight months!" Jorgan protested, dusting himself off. He bent down and studied the two girls. "This one's my Mina! I'm sure of it!"
"Actually, I do believe that's my Maggie!" Captain Jack said.
"Right! Just like how you were so sure that you had 'your Mina' and 'your Maggie' earlier today!" The other girl said, before heaving a sigh. "I'm Mina, she's Maggie!" She admitted.
"I was right!" Jack rubbed it in Jorgan's face. "Score one for the Pirates!"
"It's not a competition, Dad!" Maggie told him.
Mina tsked "You dopes should be able to recognize your own kids, period!"
"Wait! There's one way to be certain that they're not lying to us" Captain Jack took the holy water pistol and squirted it on the girl-claiming-to-be-Maggie's hand.
There was no burning or sizzling.
"Maggie! My Maggie!" Captain Jack hugged her.
"Well, that's all very nice!" Mina did a slow sarcastic clap. "But in the meantime, I'm still dying of thirst! And now thanks to this happy little family reunion... I get two for the price of one!" Mina's eyes began to white out again as she bared her fangs.
"I knew it! I knew you couldn't deny yourself blood!" Captain Jorgan cheered. "What did I tell you Mina, Daddy knows best!"
Mina froze and turned to glare at him.
"Oooh boy, you shouldn't have said that!" Maggie shook her head.
And she was right! Because if there was one universal truth to all pirate kids -undead or otherwise- it was that they never did what they were told. Especially when their parents gloated about being right! After all who the bloody hell wants to be caught being the goody-two-shoes and get called out for it!
All of Captain Jorgan's gloating had made Mina come to the conclusion that... she was just doing what he wanted! After she told him she made it clear she wanted to be a vegetarian! Well, as thirsty as she was, Mina wasn't about to just give him the satisfaction!
"No!" Mina told off her father. "I'm not like you, Daddy! I'm not a killer! You want me to drink, it'll have to be animal blood! Cause I'm not drinking anymore human's! I have my principles!"
"You go girl!" Maggie snapped her fingers.
"Mina Lugosi Stoker! You will sit there and finish your dinner!" Jorgan told her.
"No, I won't!" Mina yelled.
"I have had it up to here with this nonsense!" Jorgan shouted. "You may not want to be a vampire! But you are! And I am your father and you will do as you're told!"
Mina bared her fangs and hissed at him.
Captain Jorgan bared his fangs and hissed right back at her.
"These two got some issues..." Maggie said in a sing-song voice.
"Mm-hmm" Captain Jack nodded.
"SILENCE!" Captain Jorgan roared.
"Don't take it out on them just because you're a stubborn old bloodsucker!" Mina yelled.
"Now you listen here, Miss Prissy--" Jorgan stopped abruptly. He and Mina turned in unison as they noticed something on the horizon. They froze in terror.
"Oh! Wouldja look at that!" Maggie grinned, seeing it too. "A beautiful sunrise!"
"The sun!" Mina whimpered, hiding behind her father. "Don't let it get me, Daddy!"
"Come! Back to The Dusk! Quickly!" Captain Jorgan transformed into a bat and flew off.
Mina transformed too and fluttered off, close behind him, the remaining members of their crew flew off with her. All of them squeaking in pain as their flesh smoked and burned all the way back to their ship.
"Mr. Gibbs!" Captain Jack called.
"Cap'n?" Mr. Gibbs rushed to his side.
"See to it that we're prepared to leave port well before sundown!" Jack commanded. "I have a feeling some of our enemies will want to have us for dinner."
"One way or another..." Maggie muttered.
"And I believe you have a cabin to clean up, Missy!" Jack looked at her sternly.
"Why me?" Maggie whined. "You're the one who let a crazy bloodsucker onto the ship and trashed the place!"
"And said events wouldn't have even taken place, had you not run off from me while trick-or-treating in the first place!" Jack told her.
Maggie frowned. "Alright, alright!" She huffed. "Where's the broom?"
"Why? Are you now planning on running away to live with witches?" Jack smirked.
"Ha-ha-ha! Knock it off!" Maggie deadpanned.
☠🧛♀️☠
"Ow! Ow! Oh, Daddy! It still hurts!" Mina whined as her father rubbed sun lotion on her shoulders. Which were covered in ghastly sun burns.
"I know, darling..." Captain Jorgan told her. "Hush now and try to get some sleep." He tucked her into her coffin. "It's already half past seven a.m."
"Daddy..." Mina peaked through the crack in her coffin lid.
"Yes?" Jorgan turned to look at her.
"I missed you" She told him.
"I missed you too" He admitted, smiling. "I love you."
"Love you too" Mina smiled.
Mina settled into her coffin and sighed. Home Sweet Hell! She thought happily.
☠🧛♀️☠
Meanwhile Maggie was collapsing onto her bed as well. Her father had her clean her cabin, swab the deck, scrape the barnacles from the Pearl's haul and scoop Jack the Monkey's litter box!
"Long day, Dearest?" Jack smirked from the doorway.
"My father, the slave driver" Maggie moaned.
"Well, I'm sorry but you should know by now that running off like that, isn't a joke!" Jack told her.
"After what I've been through yesterday, that's been made perfectly clear" Maggie glanced up at him. "I was wrong about vampires. Once you live like one for a while, the thrill wears off."
"I'm just happy to have you back, Luv" Jack kissed her forehead.
"Daddy, can I have a nap now?" Maggie whimpered. "I'm tired!"
"But I was gonna make you give the whole crew pedicures..." Captain Jack joked.
"Dad-ddyyyy!" Maggie whined.
"Alright! Alright!" Jack grinned. "I suppose you worked off your punishment."
He tucked her into her bed and kissed her forehead.
"I love you" Jack told her. He squinted at her. "You are you, aren't you?"
Maggie hissed at him, causing Captain Jack to jump.
She giggled. "Just kidding!" Maggie said. "It's really me."
"Go to sleep, you crazy little minx!" Jack tousled her hair.
"Daddy..." Maggie said before he shut her cabin door.
"Yes?" Jack poked his head back in.
"I love you too!" Maggie told him, smiling.
Captain Jack smiled and blew her a kiss. Maggie caught it and placed it on her heart.
Yes, part of the charm of Halloween was getting to be someone you're not. But if there was one thing Maggie had learned from this experience, it's that being herself really was for the best...
...Well at the very least, it was better than drinking blood.
AN: Hope you guys enjoyed that! If so leave me a comment -cause I love reading 'em -and hit that star! Also I feel I should leave an honorable mention to my sources of inspiration for this special Halloween story:
The title was inspired by Salem's Lot, a 1975 novel by Stephen King.
The name of Mina was based on Mina Harker, a character from the novel, Dracula by Bram Stoker, who in turn was the inspiration for Mina and Captain Jorgan's last name.
The concept of the holy water pistols and the Vampire Crew attacking the Black Pearl was inspired by the final battle in The 1987 film, The Lost Boys.
Mina's demonic feeding frenzy transformation and behavior was inspired by the 1981 horror film, Evil Dead, in which the girlfriend's are possessed by demons.
