Chapter 21
"Class dismissed,"
I stood up, groaning at the pain in my back. "Finally. Lalisa, let's go,"
"Want to come round to mine?" Lisa offered. "We could do our Math homework together,"
"I want to," I sighed. "But we're going to dinner with Taehyung's family,"
"Ugh, of course. Who's supposed to help me now?"
"I can," Jungkook slipped between us, sliding his arm over her shoulder.
Lisa glowed in happiness, and I tried not to aww. It's great that she could find someone as nice and easygoing as Jungkook.
Me, on the other hand, had to have a crush on some weird senior of mine, which had seemed to disappear off the face of earth.
That encounter in Jeju had left me shaken, and I do admit to not being able to sleep one night in anxiety and worry.
Even with the gun that Taehyung had so graciously lent me (I stole it from him) tucked into my bag wherever I went, I couldn't help but feel unsettled.
"Li-na!"
Yoongi was scowling, scaring away the girls from my school that flocked around him.
"Kindly get off of me," he snapped as a freshman clung to his arm.
I chuckled at his annoyed face, walking past him to the car.
He stomped after me, brushing himself off. "School girls are so annoying,"
"You know, you're too old to be single,"
"And you're too young to think about things like that," We got into the car, Mr Choi driving. I greeted him quickly, and then turned to Yoongi.
"I'm not a kid, you know,"
"You're not an adult either,"
I closed my eyes. "You don't have to be an adult to date,"
"Who's the guy?"
I opened them, giving him a side-eye. "What are you talking about now?"
"Who's the guy you like?" He repeated, narrowing his eyes.
"I don't like anyone," I defended myself. "I'm saying, like with Jungkook and Lisa, you don't have to be legal age to-"
"Jungkook and Lisa?"
I blinked, gawping at him. "You don't know?"
"Know what?" He gave me a confused look.
"Lisa and Jungkook," I stabbed two fingers together. "They like eachother,"
"No," his eyes were wide. "Really?"
"Yes!" I said, feeling slightly like a gossipy aunt. "How can you not tell?"
"I knew they gave eachother these looks and acted all sickeningly lovey-dovey, but I thought it was like, platonic? Friendly kinda stuff?"
I shook my head. "They haven't told eachother. I'm not sure they even know whether the other likes them,"
"Love makes people stupid," he said with a wise air.
"You should fall in love," I went back to our original subject. "I want a sister-in-law,"
"There's no one for me," he shrugged.
"Have you ever met anyone?"
"Well," he paused. "The only females I talk to are Mom, all the guys' moms, you, Lisa, Yeona... Lisa's Mom... Basically just family,"
"What about anyone from work?" I pressed.
"My secretary," he mused. "But she's married,"
"No one else? There must be someone you've seen at a gathering or something,"
"Oh, stop talking so much, Li-na," he sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I don't know. I'll probably just end up marrying for business. It's the best way about it. Love doesn't exist in my case,"
I opened my mouth and then shut it, sighing. He'll find someone eventually.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
"How are your studies going, Li-na?"
Uncle Taemu gave me a small smile as I looked up from my food. "Good,"
"She's bottom of the class," Taehyung lied with a confident air.
I scowled. "No I'm not,"
Mom and Aunt laughed half-heartedly, Yoongi boredly picked at his food, but Uncle and Dad were glancing at each other uncertainly.
"Are you sure, Li-na?" Dad said, looking almost sympathetic.
"I swear, I'm not!" I was mildly offended. "In our last test, I got 82%!"
"Oh," Uncle cleared his throat, the two chuckling a little. I scrunched up my nose and glared at Taehyung, who just smirked back.
Jeonggyu watched the exchange from his mother's lap, bundled in a few hundred blankets with his little nose pink. Poor boy had gotten sick from the change of temperature between sunny Jeju and December weather Seoul.
I didn't feel too good myself. My nose was becoming a pain in the ass, but nothing too big.
The adults talked between themselves, and Taehyung messed around with his little brother fondly while talking to both Yoongi and I.
It seemed all happy and calm, but there was this underlying tension between my family.
Something I couldn't quite figure out. They laughed about random things, but kept glancing at me and then each other with unreadable expressions, like they knew something I didn't.
It was weird. It had been two weeks since we had come back from Jeju-do. Everything had been fine, until just a few days ago, where suddenly everyone seemed uneasy.
Even Jungkook was giving me this look sometimes.
Only Lisa seemed unfazed at this point.
As I caught Yoongi shifting beside me and looking again, I decided to address the problem.
"What?" I stared back at him, making everyone look up.
Yoongi blinked a few times. "Uhm, nothing-"
"It's not nothing," I said, feeling unsettled. "Why does everyone keep looking at me weirdly?"
"No one's looking at you weirdly," Aunt Jihee mumbled.
"You are," my voice faltered- was I reading into it too much? "You all are. Something's... Something's up,"
Taehyung sighed dramatically. "Look, Li, no one's-"
"No," my dad stopped him, looking straight at me. "You're right, Li-na, something is up,"
I looked at them all, trying not to gulp loudly. Seconds went by, but the tension that wanted through the air was so thick it felt like time had slowed to a trickle.
Finally, Uncle looked up, looking ten years older than usual.
"Li-na," he said slowly, fiddling with his wedding ring that sat on his finger.
"Your mother came to see me the other day,"
