Kicked off the circus grounds
I knew that the girl's brother was following me as I could see him out of the corner of my eye. He wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to harm his baby sister.
That was fine with me. I knew once he saw the Wayne family with her that he'd accept that this was in his sister's best interests. "I know your following me boy."
"I just wanted to know what you were going to do with her? Your not going to hurt her are you?" Her brother asked in concern.
"I have no intention of hurting your sister. In fact, the family that hired me to find a child for them to adopt is very well off and well respected members of this city. I can assure you, your sister will be in good hands. Would you like to meet them?"
"What's the catch?" The boy asked warily.
"The catch is that you must not say a word to anyone about the deal your mother and I made especially not to your sister's new family."
"Deal." The boy replies.
Thomas POV
"Excuse me are you Mr and Miss Wayne?"
"Yes? May I help you?"
"I believe I have something that belongs to you." The man replied placing a small baby girl in my arms.
"Oh Thomas she's beautiful." Martha whispered.
"What's her name?"
"Well, considering that your adopting the baby girl you can name her anything you want. I doubt that her biological mother would care. All she ever called the little one was Brat."
"Oh the poor Dear." Martha replies stroking the baby's hair. As she did the baby seemed to make a purring sound almost like that of a kitten. "Awww isn't that adorable."
"Her biological name is Desdemona, Demona for short." Her brother replies.
"Who might you be young man?" Martha asked with a slight smile.
The boy shrugged his shoulders. "No one of importance. I'm just a circus kid."
"How do you know this sweet little baby girl?"
"This is a circus ma'am. Everyone knows each member of the circus no matter how young or old they are. Oh and one more thing before I forget, your new daughter comes with a few accessories."
"What kind of accessories?"
"A small group of animals. "Two wolf pups, 4 tiger cub, two bengal and two Siberian white tigers, four hatchlings (two baby crocodiles and two alligators, two snakelets, two hyenas cubs and a spiderling ."
"Thanks for that very kind offer young man, but I don't think my clients were expecting to bring home a menagerie of animals along with their new daughter. Well, I best be on my way."
"I can't thank you enough for everything you've done for us."
"It was my pleasure." The man replies as he walks away.
"Desdemona doesn't seem to fit such a sweet angelic creature. I'm sure we can come up with a more fitting name later."
Upon seeing the small baby in my arms Bruce tugged on my sleeve. "What is it Bruce?"
"Mommy, that's the baby that I saw in the cage." Bruce says as he clutched his Teddy and his new stuffed animal in his arms.
I looked over at Martha in confusion. She frowned down at Bruce momentarily. "Bruce Don't you have something to tell your father?"
"I wandered off when you were using the bathroom. I found the snake dancer's trailer. There was a baby in a small cage by the snake cage. The baby looked just like her." Bruce said pointing to Bella.
"Now Bruce, that imagination of yours is going to get you into trouble someday. We can't go making wild accusations like that. Especially when we are on their territory. I'm sure you were just imagining things. It's getting late. We should probably head home." I replied with a slight sigh.
"But dad, we haven't seen everything."
"You should have thought about that before wandering off son. That was an incredibly dangerous thing to do. I'm sorry, but we are going home and that's final! And your going straight to bed when we get home young man."
At this, Bruce's eyes filled with tears his lower lip beginning to tremble and I sighed in frustration. "Thomas darling, Don't you think your being a little too harsh on him?"
"No." I replied. "He needs to learn that his actions have consequences."
"I agree, but we are celebrating his birthday and he apologized for his behavior. Let's not spoil our evening over one little mess up."
"This isn't a little mess up Martha. He could have gotten hurt, or worse he could have gotten kidnapped. We are leaving now! End of discussion!"
At this, Martha sighed shaking her head in disappointment. Taking Bruce's hand she turned to leave. "Come Bruce. Your father has made up his mind. Let's go."
"Martha I..." I ran my hand through my hair and sighed. "Alright, we can stay for a little while longer." Martha smiles at me and Bruce began to jump up and down excitedly.
"You mean we can stay?"
"Yes son, we can stay for a little while longer. As long as you give your word that you won't pull a stunt like that again." I replied trying to sound as stern as I could.
"I promise! With that Bruce proceeded to drag us all over the circus. Can we go on some of the rides and play some of the games? Oooh look you can win a fish. Can we play? Pretty please? I've always wanted a pet."
I couldn't help but chuckle at his excitement. "Sure son." After handing the baby to Martha and the money to the attendant, I threw the first ball and it missed. I threw the second ball and it bounced into a bowl and then back out. I could tell that the attendant was smirking in amusement.
"Can I give it a try?"
"I don't know son. It's a lot harder then it looks." I replied pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration.
"Please?"
"Alright." To both the attendant and my surprise Bruce not only made it into a bowl but he made it into the big bowl which was supposed to be almost impossible to do. The attendant running the game frowned.
"Congratulations here's your prize." The man said handing Bruce a mini teddy. "You may collect your fish before you exit the circus." The man said in a bored tone.
"I don't want this one it's tiny."
"That's to bad kid."
"Why can't I have one of those? Bruce asks pointing towards to a small Scooby Doo, a small Pikachu a medium sized bulldog and gorilla and the XL prized tiger and unicorn.
"Look, I don't make the rules kid I just run the booth. The rules state that if you want bigger prizes you have to continue playing. Unfortunately, I'm getting ready to close up shop."
"But that's not fair. It says winners choice." Bruce replies with a frown.
"Why so sad kid?" The boy from earlier asks as he walks up to where we were standing.
"He won't give me the prize I want even though I got the ball into the bowl that says grand prize." Bruce says with a frown.
The boy glances over at the worker. "He won't huh?." Bruce shakes his head no. "Wait here. I'll see what I can do." With that, He walks over to where the worker running the game stood. "I hear tell that you have an unhappy customer."
"Yeah so? What's it too you boy?" The man replies.
"Me? Normally I would care less but from what understand not only is it that kid's birthday, His family is one of the wealthiest and influential families in this city. The last thing we want is for this family to give our little circus a bad review."
"But go ahead, don't give the kid the prize he deserves. I'm sure the Ringmaster will understand your reasons for breaking the satisfaction guaranteed policy. Then again, I hear your already skating on thin ice with the Ringmaster."
"Ok. Ok. I'll give the kid whatever he wants. No need to resort to blackmail sheesh. Which one do you want kid?" The man grumbles.
"I don't know. I like all of the doggies, the tiger, the gorilla, the elephant, the teddy, the unicorn, the dragon, the Pikachu and the Scooby Doo. I wish I didn't have to choose."
"Yeah well, I'm afraid I can't help you with that. Now please make your choice. I have to close up for the show. Look kid, I have a schedule to keep I don't have all night just pick one already. Fine I'll pick one for you. With that he hands Bruce a stuffed dog to go along with his favorite teddy bear.
It was almost time for the big top show so we took our seats. The baby who was now wide awake eyes were filled with wonder. However, as soon as the snake dancing lady came on stage the baby began to cry. The lady glared up in our direction angrily. "Shut that kid up will you? I'm trying to enjoy the show!" An audience member hissed at us.
"Hush little one." Martha whispered gently rocking her in an attempt to trying to calm her down to no prevail.
"Excuse me, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to ask you and your family to leave. You are disturbing the other customers." A man said as he approached our seats looking apologetic.
Bruce frowned "we paid to see the show and the rest of the circus. You can't kick us out."
"I'm afraid he can son." I replied with a sigh. Getting up from my seat.
"But it's not fair!" Bruce replies pouting.
"I'm really sorry about this." The man replied again.
"It's perfectly alright sir." I reply.
"No it's not! I don't want to leave! I wanna see the show!" Bruce replies refusing to move from
His seat.
"Bruce, honey, we can come back another day. It's getting late and we really should be getting home anyway. We've stayed out way past your bedtime as it is." Martha replies Bruce pouts but get up from his seat and follows us.
As we head towards the exit and to where our car was parked Bruce pauses looking extremely upset. "What is it Son?"
"I can't find my stuffies..." We glanced around but didn't see his stuffed animal anywhere. Thomas sighed in frustration we both knew that it would be impossible to get Bruce to go to bed let alone to sleep, without his favorite teddy bear. He carried that bear everywhere. "We've got to go back and find Him."
"I'm afraid that simply isn't possible son." I replies.
"But we have too." Bruce replies beginning to sob hysterically.
"Alright. I'll go back and look for them but don't get your hopes up."
"Thank you daddy." Bruce replies giving Me a hug. Oh and daddy, don't forget about the goldfish I won."
"Since we were asked to leave by the circus security I don't think I will be able to re-enter the circus grounds. But I'll see what I can do about finding the teddy and his new stuffed animal. I whispered to Martha who nodded in understanding.
"I know, how about we go down the pet store tomorrow and you can pick out a new pet fish then?" Martha says to Bruce who pouts.
"But I want the one I won. And I can't sleep without Pooh Bear. I just can't...". Bruce replies with a whimper. "
"Stay with the car. I'll be right back." I reply kissing Martha before heading back to the circus entrance.
"I'm sorry Sir but no re-entrance is allowed. You'll have to purchase another ticket."
"I just wanted do see if I could still redeem this ticket for a free goldfish? And also if anyone turned in a stuffed Pooh bear and a stuffed dog?"
The man at the ticket booth grunted in annoyance. "We don't got no lost and found."
"Would you mind if I took a quick look around to see if I can find it? It's my son's favorite stuffed animal and he can't sleep without it."
Again the man at the booth grunted in irritation. "We don't like no outsiders snooping around."
"I'll take that as a no. Alright, I guess I will just have to purchase a new ticket."
The man then took out a sold out sign and a closed sign and placed them on the window. "Sir, please be reasonable... I don't intend on interfering in anyone's business I just want to look for my son's toys..."
"Cry me a river because I don't care."
"What seems to be the problem?" A young boy asked walking up to the booth.
"Noth'n. Mind your own business boy or I'll tan your hide so bad you won't be able to sit for a week. Do I make myself clear?"
"Perfectly."
"As for you I told you, you ain't allowed onto the circus grounds after hours so get lost."
"You sure you want to do that?"
"What are you talking about boy?"
"You know the Ringmaster wants to make sure the customers always leave happy. I'm sure the boss will be understanding and won't fire you when he discovers that you've broken the rules again." The boy replies.
The man grunts in frustration "fine. I Go and look for a stuffed Pooh bear and a stuffed dog and grab one of the fish bags and bring it back here. And don't be all night about it."
"Yes sir." The small boy replies rushing off. He returned a few minutes later, carrying the Pooh bear, the two bags of fish a goldfish and a Bata fish and the stuffed dog that Bruce had won as well as some other rather large stuffed animals which included a worn out stuffed animal that had seen better days.
"I said grab a bag boy not a boat load of crap!" The man snarled and I could tell that he wanted to hit the kid.
The boy giggled before replying "his was a special ticket. "The other bag is the fish they won." The boy replied.
"And what of that ugly thing? You were supposed to throw it out."
"Relax Uncle. This belongs to Desdemona." The boy replied with a giggle.
"What does you're baby sister have to do with a toy that you were suppose to dispose of?" The man replies with a frown. The boy then whispers something into the man's ear.
The guy groans and ran his hand through his hair and began to swear under his breath. The man seemed to be struggling with the idea of allowing me to take all of the stuffed animals that the boy had brought with him but ultimately he sighed in frustration. "Take em."
"Are you sure?"
"I said take em. Get lost before I change my mind." The man replied the boy turned to go but the man grabbed him by his collar. "As for you boy..." The man growled decking the poor boy across the face. He then took off his belt and held it above the boy as if he were going to strike him with it.
"Hay, leave that poor boy alone!" I demand angrily setting the cages down.
"This doesn't concern you old man." The man replied turning his attention back towards the boy.
"I said stop." I reply grabbing the man's arm.
"You don't have to do this sir. I'm use to it." The boy replies standing in between the two of us. At this I frown.
"Use to it? You mean this happens often?"
The boy winces and then nod. At this, the pudgy dirty man glared angrily at the boy. "You just don't know when to keep that trap of yours shut do you boy?" The man demands angrily smacking the boy so hard that he fell backwards hitting his head on the ground with a sickening thud.
I could no longer contain my anger I rushed towards the man and decked him across the face. "I said leave the boy alone! Or I will contact the police."
"Just who do you think you are?"
"Wayne. Thomas Wayne and you sir, are a disgrace to humanity, you deserves to be arrested and put in jail without parole." With that, I hit him squarely in the jaw.
He seemed startled for a moment but then regained his composure and began to calmly quote verses femme the song Mean Green Mother from outer space. "You had better wait a minute. Better hold the phone."
"You should mind your manners and change that tone. Don't you threaten me boy. You've got a lot of gall. You don't know what you're messing with
You've got no idea. You don't know what you're looking at."
"Well, you looky here! You don't know what you're up against. No, no way, no how. You don't know what you're messing with. this straight! I'm just a mean Well, I'm gonna tell you n-n-n-n-n-now (Ah, ah, ah, ah) You don't know what you're up agains."
"You don't know what your up against but then I guess you never did. So get off my back 'n get out my face, You want to save your skin boy, you want to save your hide?"
"You want to live to see tomorrow then you'd better step aside. Better take a tip boy, take some friendly advice. You'd better take it easy because your walking on thin ice. Ya don't know who you're dealin' with. No, you never did. But that's tough kid. You should just end this fuss. These foolish efforts to undo me are so tedious."
"All your methods are so corny and so childish and so undergrad. They are just an exercise in stupid. Why not face it Mr. Wayne? I've got you beat!" With that he proceeded to attack me until Alfred showed up. Good old Alfred.
