Explanations of the hard kind
I woke up in a whitewashed room. I panicked at first, because I had no idea how I got there. Then I remembered the fight. For the second time today, my head ached. I suddenly felt bad for all the people who had been on the receiving end of Frank's blows.
I looked around. All the walls, the ceiling, and the floor were white, but I could still see patches of color, like it was hastily painted over. Katie was still out cold in a cot across the room from me. I was glad that she was at least still alive, if not OK.
That's when my brain started asking questions (and answering them too). Where was I? I looked out the window next to me. I saw a green field and teens walking around. So, Camp Half-Blood, then. Why? That question bothered me. Last I checked, the demigods were trying to kill Katelyn and myself. What made them stop? And even if they did, why did they bring what they considered threats inside Camp?
That's when another realization hit me. We were inside Camp! The fact that we could even see it from the top of the hill, and the fact that I could see it now, proved there was something special about us.
Part of my brain came to the conclusion that this was all a crazy dream I would wake up from any second. The rest of my brain told it dreams shouldn't include pain.
As much as I wanted to believe the dream possibility, something else convinced me. I felt something poking out of my jean pocket. I looked down and saw it was the machine. I forgot I still had it! I took it out and stared at it, wondering if pressing that red button and wishing really hard would take us back home. I didn't have time to wonder long, because I heard the door start to open. I quickly shoved the machine back inside my pocket.
Annabeth walked in. She looked first at me, then at still sleeping Katie. The emotions in her gray eyes were hard to read. Disdain? Fear? Anger? I couldn't tell.
"Great, you're awake." She said sarcastically. "Good thing too. I didn't want to have to drag you all the way to the Big House."
A short walk to the Big House later
The Big House loomed before me. We didn't bother to try to wake up Katelyn, because I knew from personal experience it would be a waste of time. Chiron was waiting on the porch with the rest of the Seven for us. They didn't look happy to see me. Chiron, who had previously had his legs folded, stood up straight.
"Finally awake, I see. Do you have a name or something else we could call you?" Chiron asked.
"Um, oh, uh, y-yeah. My name is Solara." I responded meekly.
"Solara? That's an, erm, unique name. I have never heard of any Greek/Roman hero, monster, or even remotely famous person with that name." Chiron said.
"That's because I'm none of the above! Look, this is all just a big misunderstanding. I'm not a person of interest at all!" I said frantically.
"And yet, you are. It's obvious you are not a demigod, but you're no monster of spirit either. So, what I'm sure we all need, Ms. Solara, is an explanation." Chiron said matter-of-factly.
"Fine then." I said. "But this is going to be the weirdest thing you've ever heard."
Percy chuckled. "Try us."
"OK. But don't say I didn't warn you..." I said.
Half an hour later
".... And here we are." I finished off my story. Hearing it back, I never would've believed it if I didn't just live it.
"Well," Chiron said, "Ms. Solara that was a most thrilling tale. Could we perhaps see the machine of yours?" Chiron asked politely.
I pulled it out of my pocket.
"Wondrous indeed such a little thing could do so much." Chiron said. He wasn't even the least bit surprised. I put the machine back inside my pocket.
"Obviously you and your friend will need somewhere to stay until you can figure out how to go back to your home. You may stay in the Artemis cabin. Mr. Valdez will help you with your machine." Chiron stated.
Leo flashed me a crooked smile. Everyone was dismissed and I made way back to the Oracle cave(where we had been staying). Katelyn was up. She ran up and hugged me.
"Oh, thank the gods! I thought they did something horrible to you, or worse!" She said with tears in her eyes.
"It's OK, Katie. They just wanted me to explain everything." I said, comforting her. "We're going to be staying in the Artemis cabin for a while while we figure out how to work this machine and get home."
"OK, OK, just as long as we do this together." Katelyn said gratefully.
"Yeah, together..." I trailed off, wondering what's future had in store for us.
