Chapter 2 - Distortion pt. II

All the frustration that Mr Targil had been pressuring inside him burst out and it was visible on his face. While I was like 'Dang, this guy knows this stuff?'. Of course I was impressed because it's hard to find people who have interest in astronomical and cosmological stuff. But I also don't think it's good to argue like this with someone older.

Mr Targil shouted, "NOW WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT HAS TO DO WITH THIS??"

"As so it!!" Reada intervened again. "Why do you think that I should be grateful to you? You're paid from this school as a teacher and I as a student pay this school. But did I ever ask you to be grateful to me for that? No, right! It's not like I begged you to teach me. It's just if you're suspected to be not teaching here and your students seem to be failing then you'll be kicked out, and if I am suspected to be not doing well in studies or not following any rule then my parents will be called. So you are just teaching here to save your own ass and none of us owns anything or has anything in debt to anyone!!"

Damn, all that he said was legitimate. I was shocked and that was the same expression for almost the whole class. Expect some like: Shin, she was quite enjoying this scenery; and Rem, he was just lost in his books!

"You Are Quite Interested In The Multiverse, Right? Solve This Then!!" Mr Targil decided to drink up that insult and choose to fight in a mathematician's way. "Eri!!" He called and as he said that the borders of the ZeadaR's screen started glowing in vivid colours. And then he continued, "Assume Ram owns an amount of money and by some miracle he manages to double it. So what he does is that he takes all that money and splits it in two sets of the same amount. Or, simply saying he now has two sets of the same amount he owned before. He takes the first set of money and adds 300 Yerats to it and then stores the result he gets from it somewhere. For the second set of money what he does is that he takes that amount and buys shares in a company after adding 450 Yerats into it. The investment turns out to be a right decision and in a short period of time the shares he owned become worth 3 times of the amount that he had bought them with. He gets happy but after sometime the company faces a loss and the price of the shares he owned run down by 56 Yerats. So in a fear of bankruptcy he sells all his shares and takes out all the money that they were worth. At the end, when he adds that amount of money with the amount he had stored before, it all turns out to be 1294 Yerats!".

As Mr Targil started saying the question, the board on its own cleared itself and started writting the question on the top of itself as a header, while following his words.

Mr Targil continued, "Now in a parallel universe. Here that miracle never occurred and so he still has the same amount of money that he had in the very beginning of the first universe. Now in this world too he decided to invest, but this time he adds 700 Yerats to it and invests it all without having any rest for saving. After sometime the money becomes worth 18,750 Yerats, which is 30 times of the money that he invested. Now find the amount of money that he had at the beginning of both of the universes!".

FUCKING HELL!! That's A Long Ass Question! It's so long that I even lost track half way. Also if Reada will not be able to solve it then I know Mr Targil is gonna scold him badly.

"For your concern, both of the worlds follow the same rules of mathematics and monetary system. So, Readarex, would you mind or be able to walk up to here and solve it?!" Mr Targil said sarcastically while his voice also sounded like he was challenging Reada's pride. He had really decided on insulting him in front of the whole class. Now the only thing he was waiting for was for him to get the wrong answer. But I don't think that will happen. It's because the question just looks large, not something that hasn't been taught, so I think he'll be able to solve it if he does it properly.

"No." Reada replied.

What?

"Oh! Is that so?" Mr Targil said. He then turned around to the screen and said as he started writing on it with a stylus pen, but a bit sarcastically, "Well this question is pretty big so you might have got anxious after seeing it. I won't blame you for that. Here let me help by summarising it for you."

He wrote two equations of algebra on it:

1) x + 300 + (x + 450) 3 - 56 = 1294

2) (x + 700) 30 = 18750

He then turned back to us and continued, "The first equation here is for what took place in the first universe and so the second equation is for the second universe's happenings. While 'x' here represents the amount he had at the beginning. Now, tell me can you come over here and solve it??" Mr Targil asked again while anticipatingly looking at Reada, waiting for his reply.

And so he replied, "No!! Bu-"

"ENOUGH ALREADY!!" Mr Targil shouted angrily and intervened. He continued, "You Know What's Your Problem, Readarex? It's That You Think You Know Everything, But In Actuality You Don't!!".

"But, sir-"

"I Said No More Excuses!! I'm not going to listen to any of your excuses anymore. Now I'll say and you'll listen." Mr Targil intervened again while Reada was trying to defend himself and continued scolding him, "You know? you don't actually deserve to be a topper, not at least in my eyes. A topper is someone who always devotes to his studies because he knows how many rivals he has that are continuously working hard for that position he is in. There is no such thing as an invincible talent and you must understand it. Hard Work always beats talent!!"

Well it was bound to happen…
Although I'm a little surprised because I was expecting him to actually solve that.
Just what kind of topper is he if just all he does is big talks and can't even solve a question like this?
Guess, he's after all an idiot!!

"Now, let me show you how a real topper solves it! Remember!!" Mr Targil said and Rem suddenly stood up. "Come here and solve it."

Wait, that's weird?-

"Why did he stand up? I thought Mr Targil was telling Reada to recall something." I accidentally said out..

And again this time Shin leaned back on my desk as she heard me. Then she turned to me and quickly explained, "Actually Rem's full name is Remember, just like Reada and Readarex."

"Whatt-?" I said in surprise, "But ain't 'remember' a bit weirder to be used as a name?"

"It's a long story, I'll tell you later!" She replied in a hurry and turned to the front as she was excited enough to not want to miss any of the drama going on.

And so I did too as I had no other choice but that.

Rem had walked up to the board and had started solving the equations by now. While Mr Targil was looking straight at Reada. And Reada, he was just standing on his spot with his hands behind him while his head a bit down and eyes looking down. But it didn't look like he was ashamed or something because he still had a smile on his face, rather he looked more like a person who's lost in his own thoughts.

After a moment Mr Targil asked Rem while he was still looking at Reada, "Are you done?"

He quickly wrote the last of his digits on the board as he was almost done and said, "Yes, I'm done!!"

Mr Targil seemed impressed after hearing that.

Rem then turned around and stood beside Mr Targil, standing directly opposite to Reada. He was also looking at him but his face was full of confidence and he had a strange kind of happiness on it too.

And that was when I realised the difference between them.

They were both standing at each side of the class, while the tension between their auras felt like of a long-lost rivalry. But what was different here was that one of them here was standing with full confidence and his face straight up with dignity. While the other one was looking down, lost deep in his own thoughts, which made him mysteriously feel equal to him. Rem is disciplined, looks good and smart, and is gentle with his tongue while Reada is indisciplined, seems to be an idiot, is lazy and always talks while wearing his attitude on with fair points without considering if it's hurting or pleasing anyone.

They are the total opposites of each other.

I'm sure if it was a classic literature novel then the author surely would have defined them as the Sun and the moon. Both totally different from each other but still somehow shining at people's eyes while being at the top.

But although it explains the situation very well, in truth, the moon stands no chance when it comes to being in a comparison with the Sun. Somehow still I feel like it doesn't perfectly draw their characteristics well, especially Reada's mysteriousness. And so I would like to describe them as the dark and the light side of the moon. One which we can see shining bright, helping us understand things while being at top, while the other one which is also at the top but is dark, cold and is a mystery in itself.

Mr Targil didn't even turn to check if Rem's answer was correct or not and started congratulating him, "I knew it from the start that you could do that. Well done!!".

Even though it did bother me a bit that he was praising him without even confirming I couldn't do anything. But I think he is very confident about his disciple. So, at the end I also just assumed that his answer was correct. Why? Because, after all he was the topper.

"Now look at that idiot, looking down in shame" Mr Targil continued and pointed a finger on Reada. "Well that's the only thing he can do since he can't even solve a simple equation!!"

But then suddenly Reada lifted up his vision and said with a smile, "Sir, he is wrong!!".

"WHATT??-" words spilled out of Mr Targil's mouth as he heard that. Surely it was surprising for everyone, including me.

"The answer that he came up with, is wrong!!" Reada repeated. "The answer should have been -75, but the answer he came up with is around 70.94 Yerats. The reason for it is 'cause he missed an addition mark in his very first step, maybe because he was anxious after seeing such a long question"

He said the last of his words very sarcastically since they were the same as of what Mr Targil had said to him at first and they really did hit him, making him turn around and check Rem's answer.

And Mr Targil found that Rem was in fact wrong.

Actually the steps he had followed for solving out the value of 'x' were that he first added both of the equations and created a third long equation, and then had started solving it.

(L.H.S of equation 1) + (L.H.S of equation 2) = (R.H.S of equation 1) + (R.H.S of equation 2)

Equation 3

But one huge mistake that he made was that he forgot to add the plus sign between the (L.H.S of equation 1) and (L.H.S of equation 2). And ended up multiplying 56 and 30 by mistake, which led him to the value he had got for 'x'.

"So what? You had also said that you can't solve it" Mr Targil said as he turned around to Reada again. "Anyone with a bit of brain can solve an equation after seeing someone's method. Keep in mind, you had also said that you won't be able to solve it before!".

Hearing that somehow made Reada confused and his smile turned to a plain face. "I did?" He asked while looking straight at Mr Targil with a glare of question.

The way he was glaring was so dreadful that even Mr Targil got shivered over the chills at first. But after a bit he tried holding control on himself and replied with a bit of hesitation, "Yea…h you did say, you can't-".

"Exactly, I never said, I can't solve it" Reada cut in and started smiling again, "Also why do you think that I would follow his such lowly steps-".

"Lowly?-"

"Yes, lowly! Just why did he have to add both of the equations when all it did was just make the problem seem bigger. You can simply find the amount by just solving one of those equations. For example let's assume the second one then it would have been 18750 by 30 minus 700, which is simply -75. Concluding your Ram to be in debut!"

Just what he said left us all in a shock, including me, Mr Targil and Rem. He was right since because it's multiverse, you don't have to solve both of the equations and then compare them to see if they're the same or add both of the equations together. Instead you can just solve one of them and you'll get the answer, and at the end if you really want to then you can place the found value in the other equation and check if your answer is correct or not. It was a simple thing but still something that none of us had thought, not even Rem.

Even Mr Targil was left speechless at this moment but Reada? He still had a smile on his face and was looking at both him and Rem.

And that was when I realised what he just did here. His smile explained everything. He played a game, a game with his words. When he said he can't, he didn't mean that he can't solve the problem and gave up. What he actually meant was that he couldn't go to the front, which is maybe for his laziness. He knew that it was gonna happen and still played along. While Mr Targil had no idea that the one he was insulting would turn the whole table.

The moon I was talking about, doesn't actually have a dark side. That side also gets in contact with light and shines, the same as the other one. It's just us humans who criticize it in the name of the dark side, cause we don't see it shine. Also Reada's characteristics are not something that can just be described by something like the moon or the dark side of the moon, he is on a completely different level, something that just destroys everything on its way.
