Chapter 5: Sleeping Beauty
Dr. Archer reaches out to touch the doorknob to open it further, but it doesn't barge open completely. Something obstructs it. He leans forward, peeking behind it, and growls. He then grabs hold of the door by its edges, his grip tightening.
'Another human corpse,' he says, glancing at us, and then pulls the door off its hinges with all of his strength. It creaks and shudders as he throws the door away, his beast flashing in his eyes.
Alpha King steps in the room and ceouches beside the corpse, and takes out his kerchief wrapping it around his fist. The corpse or the man is eerily similar to the corpse we found in the forest. Only this is in a better condition. However, the head of blonde is a give away and I doubt if the two people are related by blood.
'Christian Lint,' he says, rising his brow aswe glance at each other. Then my doubt was right. They share the same surname.
I smeel the air and find that beneath the rotten scent, the corpse has a human scent and it is not a vampire.
'Familial fight, perphaps? They share the same looks. Not to mention, this corpse was a human,' I wonder in our shared link.
Both of them nod at me and stare around the room. It's a sort of art room. There are different paintings hanging on the walls. But a wardrobe stands out. Why a wardrobe in an art room?
Dr. Archer peers behind the open door of a wardrobe and shouts, 'A vampire.'
We get up and run towards Dr. Archer. He stands in the darkest part of the room and behind the wardrobe lies a vampire.
Vampires pretty much look human, except for their eyes. Their eyes have white spots on the eyeballs and dark spots the colour of their eyeballs on the sclera. But this vampire's eyes are closed. However, his rustic scent is a five away.
The king takes a deep breath, inhaling more of the air. 'It's alive and probably comatose, as it didn't hear the door breaking and attack us,' the king growls.
Contrary to popular human myths, vampires can sleep but they can't stay in the light. When sunlight touches their skin, it breaks out into acne. Very severe acne with a serious infection that would eventually lead to their death.
'But why is it in a coma? Strange, but let's bind it and bring it to questioning before your counsel, after it regains consciousness,' I say.
They nod at me and close their eyes briefly. Then they start vibrating, their hair sprouting and their nails elongating—not a complete shift—but by the time they are done, their nails have become claws, their teeth poke out of their mouths, and fine hair covers their faces.
I follow their lead and shift as much as I can without jeopardizing the cover of a weresap. Since my suppressant is wearing off, I can transform a little. My nails elongate and so do my teeth, but I stop my beast there. If my hair grows, my secret's out, and that's too risky.
I open my eyes to see them staring at me. 'This is the most I can shift.'
They nod in understanding and crouch on either side of it while I take a step back and block the entrance, just in case.
King pounces at the vampire and holds its hand tight while Dr. Archer shreds the vampire's shirt and twists it into a rope, and then binds its hands together. Just then I sense movement and turn around towards the door, crouching and snarling, when I notice more weres at the entrance.
'Calm down. They are here to help,' the king says, nodding.
I come out of my crouch and relax. Two come in, but five stay outside. I notice some of them are cops. Shrugging, I turn back towards them, my back to the door.
Well, I guess if you are the king, nothing is impossible for you. They will probably twist the story into something that won't be alarming to human eyes. Just then we hear a gunshot, and one of the weres standing beside the king drops, hurt.
We follow the sound and see one of the were-cops standing with a gun in his hand, pointed at us, while the other two hold captive the remaining two weres.
Their guns rest on the other weres heads. Even werewolves can't sustain a bullet to the head and live. I narrow my eyes at the one holding the gun. He has the blood mafia tattoo on his hand.
'Traitors,' king links.
The one who entered the room stands on our side, and we face them. King and Dr. Archer takes a step forward, and stands on either side of me, while the other Were flanks the king. Alpha king then warns those at the door, "You don't want to cross me."
The one with the gun aimed at us changes his aim towards the king and says, "No, King, you don't want to cross us."
"What? The Blood Mafia? We have a treaty with the vampire king, which he will handle. You are just as good as dead," the king says, snarling at him. His nostrils were flaring with anger.
The man just laughs at his words. "Blood Mafia? It's much more than that, but you won't live to see it, king."
The other two are still keeping guns pointed at the captive's heads. We all growl at his words. King opens a new link, one with the captives in it.
I feel them in my head. Then the king and Dr. Archer unleash their power. It rolls off in waves, crashing into us. I draw more strength from my beast, which helps me ignore the power. But that is enough to distract the others.
The wolves in front of us shiver and the captives, taking advantage of the opportunity, disarm them and attack, just as the king links,' Attack!'
All of us pounce at once. The one with the gun pointed at us tries to shoot, but the king is too fast and he snatches the gun and pushes it away. There's no chance that guy could take on the king one-on-one. King then claws the man's eyes out. Meanwhile, Dr. Archer punches the one to the left of him while the earlier captive tries to bind his hands. The man flanking the king aids the other captive.
I hear growling from my back and turn around. I look at the vampire, who is awake and standing and growling at me. Dr. Archer had tied his hands in front of him and not behind him. Shreds of that kerchief lie at his feet. He must have torn them.
I growl at him, and he growls back at me. Snarling, I run towards him, unleashing my power. Amidst the chaos of the fight, it'll go unseen. My beast snarls in agreement, excited at the opportunity to fight. She was irritated at not having to run, and she felt this was a good way to let off some of that steam.
He runs towards me. A fist comes at me, which I evade by kicking him with my left foot. He misses it by an inch and tries to sweep my foot from under me. Sensing it, I spin, landing on both my feet and jump on him, nailing him in the chest. He let out a painful moan but tried to shake me off him.
I pounce back and spin, faking a punch while he ducks and gets up, only for him to be met by my roundhouse kick. Blood oozes from his mouth, spraying my clothes and the floor, while he falls unconscious again. Well, that was easy.
I shrug and turn around to look at the others. The others have captured the traitors and they look at me with their mouths hanging open. Even the king looks at me with a raised brow.
I just raise my shoulders a little and say, "Black belt," as if it explained everything. Well, I could not let them know my secret.
"Impressive," Dr. Archer says, looking at me in awe while the king just narrows his eyes at me.
"What?" I ask.
I had subtly reeled back my power and with my suppression shot, there was nothing that could raise suspicion.
"I may be a weresap. However, I am a werewolf," I explain. King still looks at me, doubt etched on his face.
The urge to roll my eyes is strong, but I resist. There were other weres in the room and I could not roll my eyes at the king. He just stares at me for a moment, then nods to himself.
He then turns towards the others and says, "Take them to the prison."
Things go smoothly after that. There was no more excitement, much to the disappointment of my beast. We are going back to the laboratory. The car moves ahead. A sense of hope and anticipation fills the air. The captives meant a lead and we could find out why the corpse was there.
However, I doubt I would be a part of this investigation further, but this didn't disappoint me this time. I had a free lab at my disposal from Monday. Today is Saturday and I don't have a shift on Sunday. It makes me bubble with excitement. I sigh internally, happy with what the future holds for me.
Alpha King speaks up, his words full of caution, "Aurelia, you helped us a lot. Thank you, but you can't be part of the investigation any further. It's dangerous for you."
I turn to look at him and find him assessing me as if testing my mood. I beam at him.
"I know, and thank you for letting me be a part of this investigation. But this is enough excitement for me. I like my laboratory exploits more," I joke.
"Yes, I saw your exploits today. You were quite fast in testing given your lack of experience," Dr. Archer chimes in, leaning to see me from the front seat.
"Is that a compliment?"
"Of course it is," he praises, winking at me.
A compliment from Dr. Archer is something I want to relish. Dr. Cyrus always speaks highly of him.
I hear King scoff and glance at him, my brows raised. He shrugs, but Dr. Archer snickers, makiing him to glare at the back of Dr. Archer's head.
Alpha King drops us off at the companies and goes away in his SUV.
