2. The Curse

(Few months before the First Chapter...)

"Oh, Aurelia! Aurelia! Where are you? Return home as soon as possible. It's almost time."

Aurelia had returned home a long time ago, having known what her future held. She surprised her grandmother by sneaking up behind her.

"Boo! Grandma, I'm already home."

Aurelia's grandmother jumped upright, gripping her chest with her hand, not realizing someone was behind her, but Aurelia just kept laughing. Her grandmother believed that Aurelia was the only reason she was still alive in this century. She didn't dislike human beings, but she also wasn't in favor of them. She was often amazed and perplexed by their technological advancements.

"Aurelia, show some sympathy towards your grandma. She is old now and is unable to keep up with your pranks. Do I need to remind you of my age? "

When Aurelia heard her grandmother say those things, she felt bad. All she wanted to do was lighten the atmosphere. She was aware of her situation and the fact that her grandmother would get tense on full moon days.

The red moon was almost here, and she was feeling more and more the need for a shift. Thinking of what would happen to her when she transformed, she shuddered. She was aware that something wasn't right with her. She was apparently four years old when she first experienced shifting, unlike all the other werewolves she knew, who began their shift at the age of eighteen. On the full moon day, she had shifted.

Her parents were terrified to find that her hand had transformed into a paw. Despite her parents being Were, they were afraid of her partial shift, which was abnormal. Aurelia was sent to a witch, who had been asked to find a solution. Nobody knew what occurred next since Aurelia was found asleep in a pool of blood and the witch had been found dead along with her parents.

The human police had found her alone, covered in blood, crying. She did not have many memories of that. She had forgotten those memories but she often had nightmares of her parents screaming. Her mind had blocked those harmful memories as part of the PTSD.

However, the Were police were reassigned to the case in order to handle the matter and she had been sent to her grandma. Their investigation turned out to be futile.

In order to hush the matter, the case was given the name of a murder, which was true since the witch's maid was missing. And Were investigation pointed towards the maid being the culprit. But why she did the murder was still unknown, as they had found her body in a car wreck along with the things she used to murder the witch and her parents.

She was so caught up in her thoughts that she forgot about the moon that was beaming in the night sky. Her shift had started. She initially felt tingles go up her spine, which quickly evolved into tremors and terrible groans from her mouth. She raised her hand to press it against her mouth to keep the sounds from coming out, but as she raised it in front of her eyes, she noticed her nails lengthening and goose bumps appearing on her skin.

All of this was witnessed by her grandmother.

"Aurelia, I believe it is time for you to go into the basement." Her grandmother spoke, clutching Aurelia's arm.

Wherever her grandmother touched her, she felt cold seep into her skin, as if the skin beneath her grandmother's arm was submerged in water. She felt normalcy return to her skin in that area, while the rest of her skin began to grow hair.

Aurelia's grandmother walked her down the stairs and over to the silver chains hanging on the wall. She then reached for a pair of gloves and wore them, giving Aurelia a faint smile. Kissing Aurelia's forehead, her grandmother shackled her hands with silver and closed them with the keys. She merely continued muttering sorry as she heard Aurelia hiss at the touch of silver.

Aurelia tried to smile, but her nose itched. "I am sorry, my child." Her nose was growing hair now.

"It's okay, grandma. I understand why you are...ahhh."

Aurelia wanted to speak but felt her canines extend into her mouth. Her gums ached, and blood spilled from her mouth. Her grandmother took a safe step back and watched her granddaughter transform into half man, half wolf. She was the only one whose presence didn't enrage the Lycan within her granddaughter.

Her feet soon became paws, and her clothing shredded away, leaving fur in its stead. After a few seconds, Aurelia had entirely transformed into a Lycan, howling at the moon visible through the vents.

It growled and snapped its fangs, ripping at the silver chains with such force that several screws fell off the wall. But there was no need to be concerned because the chains were tied to multiple locations on the wall rather than just one.

The Lycan continued to snarl throughout the night. Aurelia's grandmother had become accustomed to sleeping in a chair. Soon, the sun will rise, quenching the lycan's appetite for blood. It was awful for Aurelia to watch her grandmother slumber through the eyes of her Lycan Katherine.

Her grandmother and Aurelia always ensured a comfortable chair was placed near the basement door - just in case her Lycan, Katherine, tried to escape. Aurelia would never forget the time Katherine managed to slip past them, her silver eyes gleaming with mischief as she darted away into the night. Grandma had been so furious, muttering incantations under her breath as she led the hunt to track down the mischievous Lycan. Katherine may have been a handful, but she was family, and they would always go to great lengths to make sure she was safe and sound.

Aurelia's eyes were a deep chocolate brown, while her Lycan's eyes were a bright silver, unlike hers. The Lycan had fur as dark as the night. Aurelia felt a deep connection with her Lycan companion, a bond stronger than words could express. They navigated the dark forests and moonlit trails together, determined to keep each other safe from the dangers lurking in the shadows.

But when the shift was forceful on the full moon days, they were always on the opposite ends of the spectrum.

Her lycan form was not similar to normal weres. Usually, weres, when transformed into their wolves, turn completely into their wolves. But in her case, it was different. It was as if she was half wolf, half man. Her torso and limbs were identical to those of a man but her hands and feet elongated, turning into claws. Fur sprouted all over her body, though, not like the other weres, partially shifting. She did not know why it was that way. Her Lycan was named Katherine. It was like having another soul in her body.

She, like all werewolves, was able to communicate with her lycan, but she had to change on the night of the full moon. That was the single time Katherine's thoughts overpowered her, and she was reduced to nothing more than a soul stuck in her own body, powerless to act.

It was soon morning, and her grandmother awoke to the sound of her alarm. She approached Aurelia, who was still in her lycan form. She uncuffed the silver chains, and the beast moaned as she snuggled up to her grandmother. Her grandmother scratched behind her ear, and the beast licked the grandmother's hand.

Just as Aurelia's grandmother stepped aside, she dashed into the woodland behind her house for a run.

As the beast entered the woodland, it let out a howl and ran. Branches were breaking, grass crunched under her feet, and air was blowing across her hair. Her ears twitched as she listened for any deer in the vicinity.

Her senses did not pick up any deer but did hear the scurrying sounds of a rodent. The lust for her prey overtook her lycan's body as she followed the sounds to a lake in the forest. It was one of her favourite lakes. The rodent, a white rabbit, was bent over the bank, drinking water from the lake to quench her thirst.

Her lycan's mouth watered as she watched the rabbit. She would let the rodent have her last fill of water before it faced its death. Her lycan's muscles were coiled tight, alert, and ready to pounce at the rabbit.

The rabbit lifted her head from the water, scanning the area, completely unaware. Her Lycan crouched, concealed among the trees by the lake. At the rabbit's first movement, the Lycan sprang into a run and fiercely attacked.

She grasped the rabbit firmly, her palms encircling its body. In an instant, her teeth were at the rabbit's neck. The rabbit struggled in her grasp in a futile attempt to break free.

After a brief moment, the fight departed from the rabbit's body as life ebbed away, her eyes turning glossy. Soon, her beast was satisfied with the hunt after having consumed the rabbit. Her hunger was satiated.

She then decided for a nice run, her tongue lolling out of her mouth, the wind caressing it. The rhythmic thud of her paws on the ground echoed her steady breathing. The world seemed to blur around her; only the freedom of movement and the thrill of the moment mattered.

Just then, she heard a loud crunch followed by people conversing. She paused and looked around, taking in her surroundings. She was getting close to the werewolf kingdom's boundary. She hid behind a tree before transforming into her human form.

There were security personnel present. They were chatting enthusiastically about the king's arrival.
