13. The Vampire
AURELIA'S POV...
The days were full of DNA testing, and the number of samples that were collected was just overwhelming. It really was shocking to me and my beast that so many people went missing in the last year. The initial forensic analysis concluded that the male was roughly 20 to 30 years old.
The technology has not advanced enough to predict an accurate age but an estimate was good enough and samples of parents of missing persons of that age group in the district were collected. After all, distance was not a big thing for us super-natural creatures.
Meanwhile, my beast was growing tired, annoyed that she could not visit the forest. She understood the seriousness of the situation and obeyed her king's orders but that did not mean that she could not miss those runs.
Dr. Cyrus was late today; apparently he had an urgent seminar that he had to attend, which was completely unavoidable. He had also been cracking the metaphorical whip on me since he came to know I was a werewolf.
Just then, Adrian exclaimed, "It's a match."
I came out of my thoughts, jerking upright and staring at Adrian. A match meant we had a lead. His eyes immediately flashed and went out of focus for a while before focusing on me.
"Sample ID number 5628754. check the records and find the address," He instructed. I nodded at him and ran to the records, flickering through the pages.
"Found it!" I shouted just as the door slammed open and Aiden entered the lab. His eyes wandered everywhere before coming to rest on me.
"Where? " He growled, his beast flashing in his eyes.
My eyes widened. "xx street, Red deer," I reply hastily.
"let's go" He commands, and we scramble and speed up to catch up with him. I could see that he was controlling his pace and trying to keep it human.
As we emerged from the entrance, a car was already waiting, and he opened the door hastily, glaring at me.
I quickly climb in, not wanting to slow them down, and he climbs in behind me, closing the door with a thud. The car then speeds off, navigating through the lanes and arriving at the address.
All of us step out, and Aiden still seems agitated. Adrian approaches and puts a hand on his shoulder calming him down and we walk towards the door. I reach out and knock at it. No sounds come from inside the house.
'Wait.' Aiden links and then the both of them go around the house, sniffing.
'Here this way,' Adrian links and I follow his scent. My beast growls as he smells blod and so does Aiden standing behind me. before us is a broken window. Shards of glass surround its base.
Adrain takes out his kerchief and wraps it over his wrist, then pushes away the shards. He then opens it and gestures me to go in.
I take a quick glance at Aiden and stretch my legs over the ledge, lean my head inside and after I find the footing, bring the other leg inside too.
I move aside to give way to the others, while I scrutinize the surroundings. It's a hallway with several doors on one side. It's lit in this room but I see a door open and that room is pitch black.rotten scents coming off of the direction of that door.
I quickly pull Aiden and Adrian into a link and say, 'rotten smell, again'
Both of them are now inside. They move forward, take a protective stance infront of me and start walking towards the room, emitting the smell.
Adrian reaches out to touch the door knob to open it further but it doesn't barge open completely. Something obstructs it.
He leans forward, peaking behind it and growls. He then grabs hold of the door by it's edges, his grip tightening.
'Another human corpse,' he says, glancing at us, and then pulls the door off it's hinges with all of his strength.
It creaks and shudders. We move aside and give him way while he throws the door away, his beast flashing in his eyes.
Aiden crouches down, takes out his kerchief, does the same thing as Adrian and reaches into the corpses pocket.
'Christian Lint,' he says.
I too crouch down and look at it.
'No nails are missing; even vampires can't regrow nails so fast,' I deduce.
Adrian goes inside, taking a look at the room. it's a sort of art room. There are different paintings hanging on the walls. But a wardrobe stands out. Why a wardrobe in an art room?
'Wait, the blood is still oozing and the rotten smell is not coming off this corpse'
'I know,' Aiden replies when Adrian shouts, 'here, a vampire.'
We get up and run towards Adrian. He stands in the darkest part of the room and behind the wardrobe lies a vampire.
Vampires pretty much look human, except for their eyes. Their eyes have white spots on the eyeballs and dark spots the colour of their eye balls on the sclera.
Aiden takes a deep breath, inhaling more of the air. 'It's alive and probably comatose, as it didn't hear the door breaking and attack us' Aiden growls.
Contrary to popular human myths, vampires can sleep. But they can't stay in the light. When sunlight touches their skin, it breaks out into acne. Very severe acne with a serious infection that would eventually lead to their death.
'But why is it in coma? Strange, but let's bind it and bring it to questioning before your counsel, after it regains consciousness' I say.
They nod at me and close their eyes briefly. Then they start to shake, hair sprouting and their nails elongating—not a complete shift—but by the time they are done, their nails have become claws, teeth poke out of their mouths, and fine hair covers their face.
I follow their lead and shift as much as I can without jeopardizing the cover of a weresap. My nails elongate and so do my teeth but I stop my beast there. If hair sprouts, then my cover is blown, and I can't take that risk.
I open my eyes to see them staring at me.'This is the most I can shift.'
They nod in understanding and crouch on either side of it while I take a step back and block the entrance just in case.
Aiden pounces at the vampire and holds it's hand tight while Adrian shreds the vampire's shirt and twists it into a rope, and then binds it's hands together. Just then I sense movement and turn around towards the door, crouching and snarling, when I notice more Weres at the entrance.
'Calm down. They are here to help,' Aiden says, nodding. I come out of my crouch and relax. Two of them enter the room, and five of them still remain outside the room. I notice some of them are cops. Shrugging, I turn back towards them, my back to the door.
Well, I guess if you are the king, nothing is impossible for you. They will probably twist the story into something that won't be alarming to human eyes. Just then we hear a gunshot, and one of the Weres standing beside Aiden drops, hurt.
We follow the sound and see one of the were-cops standing with a gun in his hand, pointed at us, while the other two hold captive the remaining two weres. Their guns rested on the other Weres heads. Even werewolves can't sustain a bullet to the head and live. I narrow my eyes at the one holding the gun; he has the blood mafia tattoo on his hand.
'Traitors,' Aiden links.
The one who entered the room stands on our side and we face them. Aiden and Adrian take a step forward, and stand on either side of me, with the other were flanking Aiden. Aiden then warns to those at the door, " You don't want to cross me."
The one with the gun aimed at us changes his aim towards Aiden and says, "No, King, you don't want to cross us."
"what blood mafia? we have a treaty with the vampire king, which he will handle. you are just as good as dead," Aiden says, snarling at him. His nostrils flaring with anger.
The man just laughs at his words. "Blood Mafia? It's much more than that but you won't live to see it, king." The other two are still keeping guns pointed at the captive's heads.
We all growl at his words. Aiden opens a new link, one with the captives too; in it, I supoose. I feel them in my head. Then Aiden and Adrian unleash their poweer. It rolls off in waves, crashing into us. I draw more strength from my beast, which helps me ignore the power. But that is enough to distract the others.
The wolves in front of us shiver and the captives, taking advantage of the opportunity, disarm them and attack, just as Aiden links,' Attack!'
All of us pounce at once. the one with the gun pointed at us tries to shoot but Aiden is too fast and he snatches the gun and pushes it away. There's no chance that guy could take on Aiden one-on-one. Aiden then claws the man's eyes out. Meanwhile, Adrian punches the one to the left of him while the earlier captive tries to bind his hands. The man flanking Aiden aids the other captive.
I hear growling from my back and turn around. I look at the vampire, who is awake and standing and growling at me. Adrian had tied his hands in front of him and not behind him. Shreds of that kerchief lie at his feet. He must have torn them.
I growl at him and he growls back at me. Snarling, I run towards him, unleashing my power. Everyone is busy in the fight; it won't be noticed much. My beast snarls in agreement, excited at the opportunity to fight. She was irritated at not having to run and she felt this was a good way to let off some of that steam.
He runs towards me. He raises a fist towards me but I duck, swinging a left kick at him. He misses it by an inch and tires to sweep my foot from under me. Sensing it, I spin, landing on both my feet and jump on him, nailing him in the chest. He let out a painful moan but tried to shake me off him.
I pounce back and spin, faking a punch while he ducks and gets up, only for him to be met by my roundhouse kick. Blood oozes from his mouth, spraying my clothes and the floor, while he falls unconscious again. Well, that was easy.
I shrug and turn around to look at the others. The others had captured the traitors and they looked at me with their mouths hanging open. Even Aiden looks at me with a raised brow.
I just raise my shoulders a little and say, "Black belt," as if it explained everything. Well, I could not let them know my secret.
"Impressive," Adrian says, looking at me in awe while Aiden just narrows his eyes at me.
"What?" I ask. I had subtly reeled back my power and with my supression shot and scent marking spray, there was nothing that could raise suspicion.
"I may be a weresap but still, I am a werewolf," I elaborate. Aiden still looks at me, doubt etched on his face.
I start to roll my eyes but I catch myself. There were other weres in the room and I could not roll my eyes at the king. He just stares at me for a moment, then nods to himself.
He then turns towards the others and says, "Take them to the prison."
