Twenty Five-Sleepless in Beach City

Opal's Pov

Part one.

Jesus Christ, what was wrong with me?

It all started after Thanksgiving. I mean, I guess it really started with that God Damned kiss.

Anyhow, Sugilite woke me up a little after midnight on Black Friday and took me shopping with her. Technically, she brought me out to a bunch of different convenience stores to load up on junk food.

Alex noticed that I was exhausted later that day and asked me if I wanted to go out for coffee.

"How's law school?" I asked, sitting down across from her.

"It's going well," She said, probably peering at me from behind her ever-present sunglasses. "And you? You're studying psychology, aren't you?" I nodded.

"Sometimes I worry that I've bitten off more than I can chew. But I think things will be fine." I stared out the window.

"Opal, you know you can tell me anything, right?" I looked at her.

"You're suspicious." She smiled.

"It's a gift." I sighed and ran my hands through my hair.

"I guessed I've just been stressed."

"About what?" I shrugged.

"School? Pearl? The fifty million people staying at my house?" I sighed again. "Me and Sugilite..." Alex nodded.

"Did something happen between the two of you?" I looked up at her, confident she was trustworthy.

"I... I kissed somebody else." Alex furrowed her brow.

"And?"

"And... and I don't know what to tell Sugilite. Do I tell her at all?" I sighed and put my head on the table. "She doesn't even know I was with her."

"With who?" Alex asked. I sighed, knowing that I had to come clean eventually.

"With Rainbow." Alex nodded and leaned back in her chair, nodding to herself. I sat up. "What are you thinking?"

"That you're an idiot," I sighed. "But not completely unforgivable. You have to tell Sugilite as soon as possible. She's your girlfriend, and more than that she's your best friend. You need to do this." I sighed and nodded.

"You're right. I do." And I did. Just... not until Sunday.

Part two.

I went with Sugilite to bring Amethyst and Nikki home. Pearl and Peridot tried to come, Peridot even started screaming about 'the natural balance', but I told them they needed to stay home. Nikki and Amethyst were upset about going home, but that was no surprise from the conversation we had on the way up.

I found out why Sugilite bought all the junk food. She slipped tons of the candy and snacks into the girls' bags.

I hugged them both tightly before Sugilite took them inside.

"I love you guys."

"Love you too, sis," Amethyst said playfully. I sat and waited in Sugilite's car as she brought the girls inside and undoubtingly yelled at her mother. I sighed. I'd been putting off the conversation I knew we needed to have.

"Alright, let's go." Sugilite said nearly half an hour later when she came out."

"God, did you murder that woman?" I asked, looking back at the apartment as Sugilite pulled out and drove away.

"I told her that she wasn't feeding them enough or giving them enough attention. Then I told her that if she didn't let Amethyst use her phone that I'd call CPS. Then she stopped messing around." I nodded. I was quiet for most of the ride home. The last thing I wanted to do was be trapped in a car with someone who was mad at me.

"Sugilite..." I finally said when we were entering Beach City.

"Yeahuh?"

"I need to get something off my chest."

"Oh." Sugilite was quiet for a minute. "Is it something big?" I started to shake my head, then nodded.

"It's something that I didn't tell you that I probably should have." She slammed the breaks, then kept driving. We didn't keep secrets. We never had.

"What happened?" I sighed.

"A few weeks ago, I came back to Beach City for the weekend with Rainbow," I started. I could see Sugilite's grip on the steering wheel tightened.

"Did she do something?" She asked. I shook my head.

"She's not like that, Sugi. We're friends now. We've been hanging out." Sugilite shook her head.

"Okay. So is that it?" I shook my head.

"Well, the main reason we went was to talk to Greg. Make sure that he and Steven were... alive. But then she got upset and ran outside and one thing led to another and somehow..." I paused. "...we kissed." Sugilite suddenly took a sharp turn and parked in the library parking lot.

"What the fuck do you mean you guys kissed?" She asked, glaring at me.

"Well, what the hell does that mean?" I asked back. "I hugged her then our lips touched!" SUgilite closed her eyes and turned away, looking for words.

"Did she kiss you? Or did you kiss her?" I gasped slightly.

"She kissed me!"

"But did you kiss back?" I couldn't answer that question.

"Sugilite, I-"

"Get out." She said softly, not looking at me. "Get out!" I sighed and got out, looking at her briefly before walking away.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her pull out of the parking lot and start driving away towards her father's house. I put my earbuds in and walked to Rainbow's.

Part three.

We had an unspoken agreement to never speak about it again. But we did that night.

After I broke down crying in her arms on her bed, after I texted my mom and told her I'd be spending the night, we talked about it.

"I'm so sorry, Rainbow. But I had to tell her. It wasn't fair not to. Rainbow nodded.

"It's okay Opal. Everything will turn out fine." She shook her head. "I shouldn't have done it. Jesus Christ, there's so many things I shouldn't have done to you-" I took her hand in mine.

"It's fine." I looked down. "I guess the reason it took me so long to say anything is complicated. I didn't mind kissing you. It's like I felt that spark that I've only ever felt with Sugilite." I looked up at Rainbow, her mouth hanging open in shock.

"Opal, I..." I patted her hand.

"It's okay." And this time, I kissed her.

I didn't know what I was doing at all. But in the moment, everything was okay. Until Alex called me the next morning.

"Opal, what the actual fuck?" I'd never heard her swear before.

"What are you-"

"Sugilite came to your house late last night asking if you were home yet. Your mom told her that you were spending the night at Rainbow's house and she lost it. She broke down crying and told me everything." I sighed.

"So you can see where I'm coming from?"

"You wish! She came over to apologize, Opal. She wanted to kiss and make up and you went back to Rainbow's house. Sardonyx and I have been here all night and all morning comforting her, Sardonyx is even skipping, meanwhile, you're out with another girl. I hope you're satisfied!" She hung up.

My life was officially ruined. I went back to the house that afternoon to get my stuff and say goodbye to my grandma, mom, and Pearl. The other three had gone out for a late lunch. I went back to school and brooded for the next two weeks until I would have to come back.

My life was over.
