Twelve- Distress Signal

Rainbow's Pov

"Ugh." I grabbed a scrunchie off of my nightstand and pulled my hair back. I had the biggest headache I'd had in months, and only because I had stayed up late studying. Being a good student was something that I never really had to try hard for, but I was working extra hard to keep up my grades.

"Mrrrrmph..." Whereas I had stayed home the night before, Morgan had not. I sighed and went to the cheap coffee maker I'd found in the attic at home to get her a cup. I placed it on her nightstand.

"Drink up buttercup." She groaned and reached around blindly at her nightstand, her fingers finally finding an orange pill bottle. She brought it over to herself and opened it, popping one into her mouth and tossing the bottle back onto her nightstand.

"Thanks."

"Really? We're only a month into the semester and you're already popping pills in the morning?" I asked.

"Yeah, why do you care?"

"Because I'm the idiot who has to look after you." I sighed and yanked open the curtains.

"Ow! What the hell?" Morgan covered her eyes with her arm.

"Come on, it's almost ten. Don't you have a noon class today?" She groaned and sat up.

"I'm not here for the education." She protested. I looked at her.

"Ae you just here for the parties?" She smirked.

"Something like that." I shook my head and turned back to my desk, grabbing my phone and keys.

"Listen, I'm gonna go get the mail." She muttered something that might have been a response and I left.

I leaned against the wall in the elevator and sighed. I hadn't seen Opal since the time I saw her getting the mail, but Morgan said she'd heard from Opal's roommate that she was back in Beach City over the weekend. The elevator stopped a couple floors below mine and someone stepped in. I was still staring at the ground and the person was reading a magazine so I didn't take notice until she sighed.

"I can't believe the state of things right now." I looked up at Opal. She was still reading the magazine and hadn't noticed who I was. "Personally I don't think anyone in politics knows what they're doing, do you?"

"No," I agreed. "They seem to think they can do anything with no consequences." She nodded, thankfully not recognizing my voice.

"If I had half a mind I'd go run for senate myself."

"You'd win." I said quickly.

"You really think so?" She asked, still not looking up.

"I've seen you win before." She closed the magazine and looked at me, then closed her eyes and sighed.

"Oh God, and in an elevator no less."

"Good morning to you too." We stood awkwardly silent for a moment.

"Look, Rainbow-" I held up a finger.

"I'm sorry, Opal. It wasn't cool what I did. And it's not okay for anyone to do it. but I'm sorry." She was quiet and studied my face.

"What are you gaining from this?"

"From apologizing?" She nodded. "I'm lifting a layer of extreme guilt I've felt for months?" She looked at me some more before relaxing.

"Fine. I accept your apology. Now what do you want?" I stepped back, confused.

"To apologize?" She sighed and shook her head.

"I'll never understand you."

"I guess that makes two of us." We were quiet again. "How's Pearl?"

"She's fine." Opal retorted sharply.

"God, I'm sorry my genuine interest in your sister offends you." She looked down, suddenly solemn.

"...How's Steven?" I looked down.

"I haven't spoken to Greg since he took him home."

"How's he taking care of Steven if he's still in school?" I chuckled.

"You kidding? He dropped out. It's not like graduating from whatever public school he was sneaking out of and lying about being a Crystal Prep student would have been hard." Her eyes shot wide.

"He's at least living with a responsible adult right?" She asked.

"Hell if I know. Last I heard he was living in a van and working at the carwash."

"Rainbow, we need to go see him! Steven could be in trouble! You and I both know that Greg is incapable of raising a child." I couldn't exactly disagree.

"I guess we could go next weekend?" Opal nodded.

"For Rose." I felt tears in my eye, but I blinked them away.

"Yeah. Let's do it."

(A/N) Yeah so let's say this is last Monday.
