Three-Home Away From Home
Opal's pov
"You're sure you'll be fine? Do you need anything?" I hugged my mom tight. Pearl was most likely In the elevator, but my mom was still refusing to leave.
"I don't think I'm the one who needs that question." She started crying.
"It's just that... You're moving out already. I know that you're eighteen and you're going to college, but..." She trailed off.
"I know you're going to miss me. But I'll call you every night. You'll be fine." I took her hand. "We both will." She took a look around the room.
"I hope your roommate doesn't party. And she better be nice to you. Or else she's gonna have hell to pay." I chuckled as I looked over at my roommate's side of the room.
She had a couple of posters on the wall beside her bed and some action figures on her desk. She seemed like she'd be cool, but I had to wait until I met her.
"Don't scare the poor girl before you've even met her." We chuckled.
"I know, I'm just worried about you." Her smile faded. "I'm worried about Pearl too. She's going to be home alone so often now." I nodded.
"That's true. But she did well before when we were working at the same time."
"But she's gotten used to having Amethyst home with her. And Amethyst's gone home." I nodded.
"I guess we're just going to have to hope Peridot will be good for Pearl. They're a lot alike." Mom nodded.
"We'll be strong. I can always take fewer hours." I nodded.
"I love you, Mom."
"I love you too Opal." She left and I collapsed on my new bed, which was surprisingly softer than I'd imagined. I admired my dorm. The white walls were definitely going to take some getting used to. The room was smaller than mine at home but it felt bigger because it was unfamiliar.
"I guess there's only one thing to do." I grabbed my phone and called Sugilite.
"Hey, baby." I smiled.
"My mom finally left. How are things for you?" The other end was static, but I could tell she was switching gears.
"I miss you, but I think I'll survive." I laughed.
"You're only a couple of hours away. We can hang out this weekend."
"You know what I'm thinkin?"
"We grab Amethyst from your dad and go to my mom's?" I asked.
"You know it!" I smiled.
"It's weird. I'm in a new place, somewhere I'm going to be living until next summer. But it doesn't feel like it." Sugilite was quiet for a minute.
"Try painting the walls pink?" I laughed again, really hard this time.
"Thanks, but I think it's the absence of my mom and sister that makes it feel so different."
"Tell me about it. I'm so worried about Ames, I can't even relax."
"I'm sure she'll be fine. Afterall, she's made it this long." There was a knock at the door, followed by the voice of my roommate.
"Hey I don't know if you're in there but if you are, could you open the door?"
"I'll call you back Sugi. I love you."
"I love you too, Opal." I hung up and opened the door for my roommate, who had two drinks in her hands.
"Hi! I didn't know what you'd like, but I got you a hot chocolate! Oh, but what if you don't like hot chocolate? What if you think it's weird to have hot chocolate in August? What if I'm being too annoying?" She babbled on, putting the cups on her desk.
"No need to worry, it's always time for hot chocolate," I reassured, placing a hand on her shoulder. "I'm Opal."
"Oh God I forgot to tell you my name, didn't I? I'm Rhodonite."
"It's nice to meet you." I smiled.
"Are the posters too much? I'm a bit of a nerd. I can take them down if you want!" Rhodonite offered.
"I think they're cool! What's this one from?" I asked, pointing to a poster with a girl holding a sword.
"Oh, that one? That's from my favorite game saga, Legend of Zenra!" She kept talking about the game series, and I noticed how much more confident she was.
"Wow, that was amazing!" I said when she finished. She blushed.
"You probably didn't want to hear all of that."
"Actually, Legend of Zenra sounds amazing." Rhodonite beamed. I could already tell we would get along just fine.
(A/N) And???? The summer show's over so I'll probably update a lot more before school starts.
