Thirty-Eight-Sweethearts
Lapis's Pov
I breached the surface of the water, inhaling sharply. As soon as I could hear the sound of Red's clapping over my own breath and the splashing of water, I slid my goggles off.
"Great job, babe," Red said with a smiled.
"Time?" I asked, still catching my breath.
"Oh, shit!" He fumbled around with his phone. "I forgot to hit lap!" I sighed.
"Well, what's the total time?"
"Like five minutes?"
"Shit." I shook my head and pulled myself out of the pool. "What do you say I get dressed and we get out of here?" I asked. Red looked at me in my swim uniform.
"Do you have to?" I snorted.
"It's February. Besides, I need a break." I kissed him on the cheek then headed towards the locker room.
The truth was, I'd been missing a lot of practices ever since Red and I had started dating. Coach was upset, but my mom being best friends with the headmistress meant that unless my grades dropped or I stopped showing up altogether, I couldn't be kicked from the team. And I did love swimming. So Coach and I made a deal that if I improved my times by the next meet, I wouldn't get in trouble. And so far, I'd had no luck.
"Ready to go, Milady?" Red asked when I came back out.
"Yeah, let's leave." I held his hand and we walked through the halls together.
"So you doing anything this weekend?" I shrugged.
"I don't know. I had to babysit last weekend so I better not have to again." Red nodded.
"Oh yeah. How's that go?" I shrugged.
"My cousin came over and tried to get me to talk to her about how shitty of a person my sister is." Red looked at me.
"The baby?" I laughed.
"Jasper, you idiot!" Red started laughing too.
"So?" He asked when we finally calmed down.
"So what?"
"What did you tell her?" I smirked.
"I told her to fuck off." Red gasped.
"Really?"
"Yeah. It was Saturday night, Jasper wasn't home, and I wasn't in the mood to talk about her."
"Are you ever?" I snorted.
"No." The halls were relatively empty. It was Friday at around five, so I understood. The basketball season was over, so the only people there really were drama club kids in the auditorium and the kids who can't get picked up until late.
I dragged Red to my locker and he leaned up against it as I swapped some books out. Neither of us said anything, and it was nice and calm to be in the empty hallways with the fading daylight. I closed my locker and leaned up against it, watching the sunset through the windows across the hall.
"It's nice," Red said, smiling.
"Yeah."
"Hess never really stops to notice stuff like this." I turned and looked at him. He kept looking outside. "She keeps her focus on the next thing always. She doesn't let stuff distract her." I suddenly got a little upset.
"What about smoking pot with a big group of people while her dad's not home?" I asked with a frown. Red turned to me, looking equally as offended.
"That's different. In the end, we're all just in a rush to be happy." I shook my head lightly and pushed away from my locker, walking down the hall. "Where are you going?" Red asked, pushing away from the lockers as well.
"Home," I replied, not looking back.
"Alone?"
"I've got homework." I shot back, pulling my jacket on over my tank top. I walked home, appreciating the unusual quiet. As much as I hated Beach City and couldn't wait to get out of there, I love how peaceful it could be. And then I got home.
"What the fuck? That's so unfair!" Jasper yelled as soon as I walked through the door. "I get one D on a test and now I can't go out with my friends, but Lapis gets to skip practices and run around town all night with her boyfriend and not get in trouble?" At this point I was curious, so I inched closer to the living room.
"We're not talking about Lapis right now, we're talking about you." Mom said firmly.
"But it's not fair that she gets treated like some golden child when all she does is complain!"
"Shut your mouth young lady. Life's not fair and you're just going to have to get used to it." His voice came from within the living room.
"You're not making this any easier." Mom sighed. "Jasper, these grades just show that you're not putting enough effort into your schoolwork. I'm not saying that you can't be with your friends, I'm just asking that you stay in rather than go out. Just because you're not currently playing any sports doesn't mean that you can let your grades drop." I heard the ruffling of a newspaper.
"I thought you had a tutor or some shit."
"Language!" Mom warned. Jasper groaned.
"Stupid Mangano won't tutor me anymore because Lapis is mad at her or some shit."
"Language!" Jasper sighed again.
"It's just not fair. Lapis is running around with her boyfriend doing God knows what and my grades are the issue." I stepped into the living room.
"Well, I'm sorry that people aren't so automatically repulsed by me that they actually want to hang out, not that they have to." Jasper narrowed her eyes.
"Shut up."
"You! I'm sick of the way you talk about me. You're just upset that I don't need to blackmail people into being my friends."
"That's it. Both of you, go to your rooms!" Jasper bumped into me as she walked past. She stopped and stood in the doorway to her bedroom. As I passed her, she leaned down and whispered into my ear.
"You know, I'm actually surprised."
"By what?"
"That you haven't found out yet." I looked up at her. She smirked. "Let's just say that Red's made his rounds." And with that, she closed her door.
I laid on my bed and stared at the ceiling. What could Jasper possibly have meant by 'made his rounds'?
Obviously, I knew what she was referring to. It would take an idiot not to. Or maybe Pearl, whatever.
I groaned and grabbed my phone, calling Red.
"Hey babe."
"Hey Red." I fiddled with the edge of my curtain. "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah, what's up?" I took a deep breath, then chickened out.
"Nevermind. I'm sorry about earlier. Do you want to hang out tonight?"
"Yeah. And don't worry about earlier. I kinda started it." I smiled, feeling a little reassured. "Come over."
After telling my mom I was going to a friends house for the night, I walked to Red's house. Before I could knock on the door, Red's sister Icy opened the door.
"Oh. It's you." I rolled my eyes. "I guess Red's staying in tonight then." She pushed past me. "Just be quiet, you're not going to be the only two home all night." I turned around and watched her pull her helmet on.
"What are you talking about?" She smirked.
"I'm not dumb. Our parents are gone this weekend, but I'm sure you have at least one of them and knew that." I nodded. "Imp's at her girlfriend's house tonight. The twins are with that creepy nine-year-old who got bumped up to ninth grade. I'll be out for a few hours. You do the math." She got on her motorcycle and started off.
Feeling a little awkward, I went inside and shut the door behind me. I headed downstairs and into Red's room and tossed my bag into his desk chair. He looked up from his phone and smiled.
"Hey, babe."
"Hey." I sat down next to him. "Whatcha doing?" He put his phone down.
"Nothing important." He smiled and kissed me. And I was happy.
(A/N) Okay, so I just spent like an hour making sure I had the right amount of Topaz siblings and yeah I do.
There's one who's Opal's age and one a few years older than Opal. They're all adopted except for the one who's Opal's age, and the oldest is kinda salty about it and never goes home for holidays.
Also, the song at the top is like the signature song for Lapis and Red.
