Nine-Alive

Lapis's Pov

Do you know that feeling when you're at the bottom of the first drop on a roller coaster? When a part of you is afraid of dying and you're just so happy to be alive? I guess that's how Red made me feel.

Red Topaz. Everyone knew him. He was just that guy who never seemed out of place. He wasn't really big with the 'in-crowd', even though he had sort of started out that way. He was just... different.

When he texted me the first time to ask me out, I was confused. I had been hanging out with the preppy girls, then just Mangano. I had no idea that someone like him would eve want to talk to me. But he did. And he listened to me like every word I said might've been my last. I felt appreciated for once in my life. And I owed it all to him. So of course, I had no idea what Mangano meant when she said I was different.

"Lapis! What the heck?" I turned around to see her marching up to me in the hall.

"Hey. What's up?" I asked.

"What's up? What gives you the right to treat me like someone you just talk to in class?" She demanded.

"What do you mean?" She was furious.  I'd never seen her so upset.

"First you kick me out of your house, then you stop answering my texts for two weeks, you've been skipping homeroom, and now you've been avoiding me all week! What's going on with you, Lapis?" I stayed quiet as she looked at me from head to toe. It wasn't that hard to figure out why. She was wearing a polo shirt and I was wearing a crop top. "Why are you dressed so weird? It looks like a  goth style had a kid with... well, you know." I knew. She was trying to politely say that I looked like a whore.

"What's your issue?" I asked. "You were upset when I was sad. Now I'm finally happy but you're still upset. Why can't you just be happy for me?" I asked.

"Because I wanted to be able to make you happy, Lapis! You're my only friend in this whole school but all you seem to care about is your new boyfriend!" She yelled. "So why don't you just go whine to him about me if I'm such a downer!" She turned around and ran up the stairs.

"Lapis! Are you okay?" Red asked, coming up behind me.

"Yeah." I sighed. "Let's just go to lunch."  He put his arm around my shoulders and we walked int the cafeteria.

I was upset about what happened with Mangano, but I decided to just let it go. After all, I had new friends to make a good impression on. Red seemed to have friends everywhere, mostly the type of kids who sat in the back of every class because they didn't care enough to be mentally present. All of these kids were people whose parents paid tuition to get them into a good school, not that they themselves actually cared. As long as they attended enough days to not have to transfer to Beach City High, that was enough for them.

"Yo, Red!" A girl at the table greeted as we sat down. "Where've you been? Making out with your new toy?" Everyone snickered.

"Hey, knock it off you guys!" Red defended. "Lapis isn't a toy, she's my girlfriend. And if any of you have an issue with that, you can leave." The girl rolled her eyes.

"Whatever. You gonna take her out with us this weekend?"

"I was just gonna ask." He turned to me. "Do you wanna hang out this weekend? A few of us are gonna go drive up the mountain and hang out on Saturday night." I shrugged.

"It's not like I've got anything else going on." Red fist pumped and kissed me on the cheek.

"Alright babygirl!" I smiled.

"But my mom wants to meet you. She said I can't go out with you again until she knows if she can trust you." The color drained from his face and everyone started laughing.

"I don't know about that. I'm not so good with adults." I chuckled.

"You'll be fine. And if she's not impressed I'll go anyway." He smirked.

"You really enjoy disrespecting authority don't you?"

"Especially if it's my mother." I kissed him and the girl pretended to gag.

"Ew get a room!" She laughed, but stopped when she noticed something behind me. "Oh my God. They're literally spying on you."

"Who?" I turned around in time to see Peridot, Pearl, Yellen, and another girl all look away. "What do they want?"

"Aw babe, they're probably just jealous that you have the hottest boyfriend in the school." Red said, putting his arm around me and pulling me close to him.

"At least half of the people at that table are lesbians, Red."

"I knew that." He lied. "They're just jealous that I have the hottest girlfriend then." I giggled.
"Red, you're the best." I smiled.

"Yeah, I know."

Random Fact Of The Day:Just a reminder that nobody actually knows how old Red is because nobody has classes with him and he's at both lunches. Not even Yellow Diamond knows. His parents are teachers and they don't know. Blasphemy.

Evidence suggests that Imperial is his only sibling who knows.
