Prologue

Luna sighed as she gazed longingly out the palace window. The beautiful night was the same as always. The purplish-blue starry sky hung overhead and the moon shone brightly, giving the night a calming glow. Yet nopony was out enjoying the heavens. Ponies often shunned and slept through her stunning night. How she wished that ponies would come out to enjoy the night sky every once in awhile.

There was a gentle knock at the door of Luna's room. "Come in," Luna invited.

The door slowly creaked open to reveal her older sister, Celestia, standing there. Luna felt a twinge of jealousy in her heart. Celestia's beautiful smile and flowing mane was enough to remind her of the way their subjects compared them to each other. "Sister? Is everything alright?" Celestia asked.

"Everything is fine," Luna lied, plastering a fake smile on her face.

"I'm glad to hear that," Celestia replied, nodding her head. "I was just about to head off to bed and wondered if you needed to talk about anything. I have noticed that you don't seem as happy during the night as I had anticipated."

"Can you blame me?" Luna asked through a sad chuckle. "Ponies play and frolic throughout your glorious day, but sleep through the night that I work so hard to bring forth."

"Luna... I thought you said everything was fine," a confused Celestia said. "You sound distressed. What is troubling you, dear sister?"

Luna sighed. "I'm sorry, Celestia. I-I was only thinking about..." she trailed off.

   "About?"

"About the day and the night!" Luna finally blurted. "I'm sorry. I tried to be grateful for all the good things about the night, but... ponies are never awake during the night. I didn't want to say I was jealous of you, but... I am."

"Oh, Luna, I am so sorry!" Celestia cried. "I never noticed how upset you were. What can I do to help?"

Luna shook her head sadly. "I don't think there is anything you can do to help."

A long silence passed before Celestia spoke again.

"Are you sure there are ponies who don't prefer the night?" Celestia questioned. "From what I see from my royal guard, many look tired during the day. They might prefer a night shift."

"I can't just have the guard for company," Luna told her. "I want to see ponies enjoying the night like they enjoy the day."

"I see," Celestia said. She paused and put her hoof to her chin in thought. "Hmm... what do you want, Luna?"

"All I want is to see ponies enjoy the night," Luna answered. She hung her head sadly. "Sometimes I feel like it's selfish, but it's what I desire."

"I have an idea," Celestia told her. "How about a kingdom of your own?"

"A kingdom of my very own?" Luna breathed. "S-sister, are you sure?"

"A kingdom where ponies who prefer the night can live," Celestia told her with a nod. "Equestria still needs day and night as normal, but maybe there can be a small section where it is always night. I don't know how this will fare for ponies, but-"

Luna embraced her older sister with joy. "Thank you, Celestia! It's all I could ever wish for!"

Celestia returned the loving embrace. "Of course, Luna. Of course."

                                                                                        ***

Finally, the palace was finished. The castle was large with a fresh coat of paint. It had rich tones of color including dark blue, deep purple, and black. Tapestries with pictures of the night hung on the walls. The night sky hung over the castle and softly illuminated it to the ponies passing by. It was named The Lunar Kingdom and it was located just off of the borders of Equestria.

Luna was overjoyed to rule a kingdom of her own. Just like she desired, ponies in her kingdom respected her and she no longer felt so invisible to her subjects.

However, there was still an aspect that needed Luna's attention.

Ponies had odd sleeping schedules due to the absence of the sun. Some ponies slept during the later hours and others slept in the earlier hours depending on when they felt tired and when they worked. This meant that Luna's duties were interrupted because ponies were always dreaming.

Luna sighed as she drafted an address. She was exhausted and she knew she needed assistance. But where would I get a pony who can enter the realm of dreams?, Luna thought. Unless... I created something that could help workers to enter dreams themselves.

Luna smiled as she set her work aside and began to write down the details of her new idea. Luna giggled triumphantly to herself, wondering why she hadn't thought of it before. If ponies could assist her in taking care of ponies dreams, she could focus on all of her duties and get the rest that was necessary for her to continue working.

After she was finished writing down the details, she gave it to a page to make a proclamation in the middle of the city. She knew that reporters would put her job offer in the newspaper. Now all she had to do was wait.

                                                                                     ***

By the end of the day, Luna had a large pile of applications for the job for shifts during many different hours. Stallions and mares. Pegasi, unicorns, and earth ponies. Many wanted to work in the dream realm.

Many of the applications caught her attention and many of the applicants were hired. One, in particular, however made her heart ache.

There was all of the usual information on the application. Her name was Rainbow Dash, she was a pegasus, she lived on Starry Sky Street down in the suburbs of the kingdom, and she had a great work ethic with experience as a weatherpony in the past.

Though, in the section that read 'Any Additional Comments?'., she wrote a long statement about the desperation she was in:

So I thought maybe I should tell you about my situation or something. My friend, Twilight, said it might help me to get the job if you knew more about how I was struggling. Not struggling in ability or anything. I'm pretty awesome after all. Just in bits for some reason. I quit my job as a weatherpony because they didn't pay me enough to cover my rent and I want to find a job that gives me the money I need. Yeah, I want to own a house, but renting is kinda all I can afford right now. But then the landlord marches right up to my door and demands that my rent be raised by one hundred bits. Doesn't he know that I am literally living off of a little bit of groceries and filtered water that comes from the tap? So I need this job, like, bad. That's my story.

Luna smiled and began to write down Rainbow's name on the list of ponies she was hiring. After all, everyone needed to start somewhere.

Author's Note: Hey, guys! So I don't write a lot, but I had this idea in my head for a long time and I wanted to get the gist of it written down. I know how hard it can be to wait for updates, so I'll try to update as much as I can, but I really have to commit to that. Especially with school. We just finished our school musical in April and now I have to catch up in the rest of my subjects (ugh).

But I hope you enjoyed this so far and please stay tuned for more!
