Chapter One

(A/N: "But if you think it, want it, dream it, then it's real. You are what you feel..."- Prologue, 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'.)

Rainbow Dash's eyes scanned the letter repeatedly. She had lost track of how many times she reread the paper in her hooves. Relief coursed through her and a grin spread across her face. She might be able to keep her house after all.

Princess Luna herself had written back to Rainbow Dash. She had written acceptance forms for all of the ponies she wanted to work for her, but she expanded upon her letter for Rainbow Dash:

   Dear Rainbow Dash,

I am happy to tell you that your application has been accepted and that I am eager to see you experience working in the dream realm. I have heard of your situation and I am terribly sorry that you are struggling. I might be able to give you a raise in bits as long as you can show me that you strive to be a capable, hard worker. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Work begins this Monday on the twentieth day of Spring's End. You are expected to arrive by 8:00 AM since you applied for the "day" shift or the earlier hours. Most ponies seemed to prefer this since the later hours tend to be when most ponies sleep and spend time with family and friends. However, those who do their work during the later hours are appreciated since most ponies go to sleep during this time and there are more dreams.

Here are a few things you will need to know before you begin:

Dreams are nothing like reality- often unpredictable and sometimes dangerous. Make sure to always be prepared to expect the unexpected.

There are five levels of dreams. Everypony starts as a level one. Level ones handle good dreams- the kind that you wish you didn't have to wake up from. Their job is merely to guard the dream from intruders. I'll explain dream intruders later in this note. Level twos handle strange dreams- the kind of dreams that when you wake up, you're left wondering how your brain can conjure up that kind of strange stuff. Their job is merely to guard the dream from intruders just like level ones. Level threes handle bad dreams- dreams that make you uncomfortable and nervous, but not scared. Their job is to help soothe the dreamer and get rid of some of the bad things. You also have to protect the dream from intruders, but you will have to do that, no matter what dream you have entered. Level fours handle nightmares- dreams that scare you, terrify you, or hone to your worst fears. Their job is to get rid of the things that are scaring them in the dream. If the dream is about their worst fear, your job will also be to help them face that fear. Level fives handle night terrors- the worst kind of dreams. Their job is to get rid of the terrors that haunt the dreamers and wake them up before it becomes bad enough to cause trauma. Night terrors are fully capable of giving ponies trauma and even post-traumatic stress disorder. You will advance levels as you become better at what you do.

Now I must explain to you what dream intruders are, so you know what you must deal with during your shift. Dream intruders are a society created by a pony who wanted to rebel against my service. I created this job to help keep ponies feel safe and protected while they sleep, but unfortunately, I suppose I couldn't please everypony. This stallion's name is Dust Storm. He's a unicorn with a talent for magic that transcends some of the best ponies I know. He used to go to my school and study magic with me. He wasn't the best student. He was lazy and he often got distracted from the lessons he was supposed to be learning. However, soon, he developed a lust for power that I haven't seen since King Sombra. He started sneaking into the archives at night and studying forbidden magic. One of the skills he learned was dream jumping. I only grant this ability to the worthiest of applicants, but it seemed he had found a way past my barriers. Now he uses this power to terrify and hurt ponies. Turn good dreams into nightmares. Make nightmares worse. Even make night terrors worse than they are. His followers can be quite dangerous as well, but he is the worst of them all. Be careful out there and good luck.

I look forward to having you work with me, Rainbow Dash. I shall see you on Monday.

                                                                                                                                                                      Signed,

Princess Luna of The Lunar Kingdom

Rainbow Dash blinked as she scanned the letter repeatedly. It was so much to take in all at once. She was confident that she could protect ponies from a few lousy intruders, but remembering all of this information seemed like a lot.

Suddenly, a knock on her door jarred her out of her thoughts and she went over to answer it.

Standing there was none other than her three best friends, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rarity. She had been friends with Fluttershy before they made the decision to move to The Lunar Kingdom. Fluttershy had convinced Rainbow Dash to move to The Lunar Kingdom with her. Fluttershy wanted to move there because she believed that the night was more peaceful and quiet than the day. Rainbow Dash wanted to move there because flying at night was one of the coolest times to fly in her opinion. During the night, the sun wasn't blinding her as she pressed forward into the wind, the stars came out and surrounded her as she soared through the sky, and the sticky, summer heat wasn't beating down on her coat. However, winters in The Lunar Kingdom were always below freezing due to the absence of the sun. Flying during the winter was never as fun.

After moving there, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash were greeted by Pinkie Pie, a pony who moved to The Lunar Kingdom because she felt most energetic during the night hours. She had wanted to throw them a welcome party, but Fluttershy politely declined. They met Rarity later when they had accidentally bumped into her on the streets. They had stirred up a conversation and discovered that Rarity had moved there because her creativity flourished during the night. She was a dress designer and it was often a difficult, demanding job. She found it easier to work when her ideas were at their best.

"Hey, Rainbow Dash!" Pinkie Pie exclaimed in her usual energetic manner.

"Hey, Pinkie," Rainbow Dash replied. "What's up?"

"We were just wondering if you got that job!" Pinkie Pie squealed. "We just have to know! It's been killing me all day!"

"Come on in," Rainbow Dash said. "I just got a letter back from Princess Luna right now."

"Ooh, and what did she say?" Rarity asked.

Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity went inside Rainbow Dash's house.

As Rainbow Dash closed the door behind them, she grinned at them with excitement. "Guess who got the job?!"

Rainbow's friends were overcome with excitement and happiness for her and gave her a group hug.

"Oh, that's wonderful, Rainbow Dash," Fluttershy said. "We're so happy for you. When do you start?"

"Monday," Rainbow Dash answered. "Maybe I'll pop up in one of your dreams if you have a good dream that night."

"Ooh, yay!" Pinkie Pie chimed in. "I'll make sure to think extra hard of super happy things on Monday when I go to sleep."

"That's wonderful, darling," Rarity told her. "We're so happy that it all worked out for the best. Does that mean you'll be able to pay your rent by the end of this month?"

Rainbow Dash nodded, eagerly. "Yup, it sure does!"

"Yay!" Pinkie Pie cheered. "That means you get to stay with us!"

Rainbow Dash chuckled as she was embraced by her friends once more. Life was going her way at last. She could only hope that would last.

(A/N: And... now I've reached another writer's block on this story. Yay. I'm open to you guys giving me ideas. But like, three people are reading this story, so IDK how much ideas I'll get. But if you are reading this and you've got an idea, I'd love to hear it! I'm always open to suggestions.)
