Chapter One
August was a long month for Adrien. A whole month without his lady by his side. His alarm went off at 6.40am signalling the first day of September. He sprung out of bed and straight into the shower, he just couldn't help but sing show tunes at the top of his lungs.
She was coming back to work. Today was the day she was back, his face split from the smile gracing it's presence over what had recently been so solemn. After he'd washed, shaved and brushed his teeth he wandered out the bathroom, towel wrapped around waist, continuing to sing show tunes.
Hugo came whizzing passed with Plagg on his tail. The little kwami was adorable but a troublemaker. Usually Adrien would be worried at such an event taking place but he couldn't care today. Hugo would be Plagg and Tikki's problem for the next sixteen hours. As he pulled out his navy blue suit, Marinette's personal favourite, he began to make himself look presentable.
His phone signalled a message. Doing a spin and a slide he made his way to his phone resting on his bedside table. It was Marinette. A short and simple message, yet it filled his heart with joy.
Good Morning ❤️
Adrien smiled, and threw his phone onto his bed. Going back to his wardrobe he found the tie Marinette had designed to match the suit, apparently it brought out the colour of his eyes.
Over the past month they'd been texting and talking, but this would be the first time he'd seen her since she'd left the hospital. He'd missed everything about her so much. Her laugh, her smile, her mood swings ...
Adrien strutted out of his room and into the kitchen of the penthouse. Alya was sitting at the counter whilst Nino was making coffees. Adrien walked round to Alya and kissed her on the cheek before joining Nino for their signature handshake.
"Is today the day Mari's back in the office by any chance?" Nino asked the blonde model.
"How did you guess?" Adrien answered as he grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
"You're extremely happy, you told us a thousand times yesterday ... oh and the big heart drawn on today's date of your calendar." Alya pointed to the boys anime calendar hung up in the corner of the kitchen. Adrien turned red, sometimes he really was a dork.
"I'm glad you're happy." Alya said going over to give Adrien a kiss on the cheek. "Just remember to take it slow."
Adrien nodded, "I will Alya, I promise." Saying his last goodbyes to he walked to the door and grabbed his briefcase, holding not only important documents but also two important magical entities.
Marinette stood in front of the full length mirror at her parents house. She'd been staying here over the past month, ever since she'd been released from hospital. Tikki had told her that a guardian had helped save her life using the kwami's and the Kwagatama she had received for her fourteenth birthday. It seemed she was close to death, but everything was just a blur.
Her parents had been amazing, Alya and Nino had been incredible too but Adrien - he'd been something else completely. She'd already become accustom to his texts and calls, and found herself waiting for them each day like a love sick teenager. He was so sweet and caring, and had became a ray of sunshine in her life.
She loved texting him and talking to him and she was sure if she didn't love Chat so much she'd be utterly smitten with Adrien. There was something so magical that pulled her to him.
If only he were her Kitty, she sighed.
Giving herself one last look in the mirror she made sure everything was perfect. Her hair was up in a slick high ponytail, her glasses were placed accordingly on her nose, her make up was light and natural with Flamethrower red lipstick placed delicately on her lips.
She wore a long sleeve blouse the same red as her lipstick and tucked it into her black skinny jeans. Finishing her outfit was a black leather jacket and red heeled shoes. She walked over to her childhood desk and picked up the lucky charm she now knew Adrien had given her before she got her 'Agreste' scholarship. Smiling to herself she tied it around her wrist, then reached for her necklace. A thin white gold chain with her eternity ring hanging in the middle. She added it round her neck with the Kwagatama already placed there.
"You look wonderful, Marinette. Are you excited to get back to work?"
"I can't wait Tikki-" she began to make her way downstairs, "- Though I'm feeling nervous about how to act around Adrien. I don't know what he'll expect from me."
"Marinette, you have nothing to worry about. He has a heart of gold, he won't expect anything." Marinette nodded at her little kwami.
"We understand how you must feel Mari. Just remember we're here for you sweetheart." Tom walked over and placed a hand on Marinette's shoulder.
"Thank you Papa." She grabbed her bag, coffee cup and a croissant for herself, and began to walk out the door before turning back and grabbing a second croissant for Adrien. "I'll take one for Adrien, if that's ok?"
"Sure it is, they're his favourites." Tom replied, she gave her big weredad a kiss on the cheek and left for her car.
She loved her little car. A red and black Mini Cooper works, small but mighty just like her. Putting the machine into gear she plugged in her phone and looked at the playlist named "Driving to Work" pressing play the voice of Ava Max filled the car. This was it ... time to go face-to-face with Adrien.
The car park for the 'Agreste' offices were situated under the building. Adrien pulled into his personal space in between his mother's and Marinette's. There was no sign of her little red car yet so he picked up his briefcase and walked towards the elevators. Once in he pressed the button closing the doors, he opened the clasp on his case to check on his kwami's.
"Adrien, seriously, sort your kwami son out! He's ate all my Camembert!" Plagg's exasperation was supported by a very stinky bleach coming out of Adrien's briefcase.
"Hugo? Did you eat Uncle Plagg's cheese?" The young kwami tried to pull his most adorable face. "Don't play that game with me Hugo! You don't eat Uncle Plagg's food! You've got you're own cookies!"
"But Daddy, I wanted cheese. Uncle Plagg can have some of my cookies." Hugo's smile was massive, it covered most of his face and was just so cute.
"Ok Hugo."
"Ok Hugo! That's all the pest gets! I give up ... he's Tikki's problem once they arrive, I've been stuck with the terror for a month." Hugo started laughing and so did Adrien. "That's it! Both of you gang up on the old man. I knew I should have been with Marinette." He flew into Adrien's pocket on the search for more cheese.
The elevator chimed signalling Adrien to his floor.
"Good morning Vanessa." He greeted his secretary as he made his way into his office.
"Good morning Monsieur Agreste. You seem in a good mood today?"
"I'm in a great mood, thank you."
"I'm glad to hear it." She stood up with her tablet and followed Adrien into his office.
"What's the plans for today then?" He placed his bag on his desk and straightened out his hair.
"Your mother would like to see you for a meeting. She has someone with her. A Monsieur Kanté?"
"Max is here? Great! Anything else?"
"The new youth catalogue needs putting together by the end of today." Adrien sighed, that's going to be an all day headache of a job.
"Will you email me when Ms. Dupain-Cheng arrives please?"
"Of course. Monsieur Agreste." She went back to her table outside his office and continued to do whatever it is she does. He didn't really know to be honest.
He walked along the bright corridor in the Agreste building, laced with pictures of himself from all ages, and into his mother and fathers suite.
"Come in, Adrien." He opened the door after hearing his mother's voice.
"How did you know it was me?" Adrien enquired.
"Marinette's back to work today, so I knew you'd be in early." She walked over to her son and kissed him on both cheeks. His mother and father were going through a rocky patch at the moment and it was rare to see them together. His father was out the country running the London office, whilst his mother decided to stay here.
"Hey Adrien."
"How are you Max? Any news?" Max was sitting with his laptop on the glass coffee table in the middle of the office. Adrien walked over and shook his hand.
"You had an attempted break in last night."
"Excuse me?" Adrien asked Max.
"Someone tried to get into your penthouse. I told you my system was flawless and now we have the proof. I think they must have known Alya was there." Max described.
"So you're telling me someone attempted to get into my home last night? How far did they get?"
"Only through the front door. They didn't make it to the elevators." Adrien nodded his head but it did little to quell his fear. What if Mari had been there? "But that's not the real reason I'm here." Max signalled for Adrien to sit down opposite him.
"Kim has suggested Mari have a bodyguard for whilst she's in work. So someone who will stay with her in her office, walk her to and from her car, etc."
"I can do it." Adrien said. His mother walked around and placed a hand on Adrien's shoulder.
"Sweetheart you've got a job to do here, plus Marinette would get suspicious."
"Then who?" Adrien turned his attention back to Max.
"Kim has a new trainee who would do well from the experience." Max picked up his phone and called someone telling them to come into the main office. As the door opened Adrien noticed the familiar hair and piercings. Luka.
"Luka?"
"Good morning, Monsieur Agreste." Luka smiled. He looked frail, how was he going to protect Marinette?
"I don't get it. Can't we contact Chat Noir to come and look after her."
"I'm sure he has better things to do. Plus that would make her even more suspicious." His mother said, there was something knowing in her eyes.
"I'm sure he wouldn't mind." Adrien mumbled to himself.
Emilie began to explain how it would work "Luka will be Marinette's personal assistant, therefore around her most of the day."
"Fine ... ok, I know she trusts him." Was all Adrien could say. His mind was going crazy. This wasn't meant to happen. He knew how much she appreciated Luka, he was a good friend to her but Adrien's cat possessiveness was not as easily accepting. "If that's everything I'm just going to ..." Adrien spoke slowly and pointed to the door before exiting it.
As he walked past Luka he gave him a look from head to toe. "You best be sober now." Adrien waited for Luka's response. Luka looked Adrien in the eye and nodded. Comfortable with the response Adrien continued to walk out.
Why was he letting this get to him so much? Oh yes, he knew why. Because he was madly in love with the girl and he knew Luka was too. As he made his way back to his office he could hear music in the room one down from his, she was finally here.
