Chapter Fifteen
The knocking continued, becoming more and more frantic. Adrien untwined half of his limbs from Marinette so he could reach over and grab his phone. Switching it on and turning on his 'Ring' he looked at what the camera was displaying and jumped out of bed.
"What's wrong, Chaton?"
"We've got unexpected visitors M'Lady?"
Adrien pulled on his pyjama bottoms then headed out the bedroom. He pressed the alarm buttons to unlock the door and pulled it open. Standing in front of him was none other than Master Fu and Gabriel Agreste, his father.
"Is Marinette here?" Gabriel spoke curt, very Hawk Moth like.
"Yes, why?" Adrien responded looking between the two men.
"Chat Noir, we need to come in and speak to you and Ladybug." Adrien didn't know if he was more confused by his father being here or that Master Fu had returned with supposedly his memories.
He stepped to one side and indicated to his father and Master to enter. Shutting the door behind him he reset the alarm and followed the visitors into the main living area.
Marinette had already gotten herself into leggings and a jumper. She was standing at the kitchen placing the kettle on the stove. Four cups stood on the table, she had read the unease in Adrien's thoughts and then started to display her own.
"Take a seat." Adrien instructed.
The two men sat down, such an unlikely duo.
"How did you get here?" Marinette came over with a tray of drinks and placed it next to their abandoned popcorn bowl.
"We had help from the Egyptian God of the Moon, Khonsu." Master Fu began to explain to the two Miraculous holders.
"Ok, ok. I have no idea where this conversation needs to start. Hawk Moth and our old Master, who'd lost his memories, turn up asking for our alter-egos. Who's going to talk first?" The four adults looked around at each other waiting for someone to speak. Adrien shook his head and sat in an chair as Marinette rested on the arm next to her love.
Gabriel took a deep breath and steadied himself.
"Whilst I was in London I came across an Egyptian exhibit which took my interest so I decided to go and have a look. Low and behold I bumped into Fu there. As we were both French we got talking and there was a familiarity between us."
"That's probably because you tried to kill him during Miracle Queen." Marinette spoke with a sharp tongue. Adrien placed a hand on her thigh and rubbed her gently with his thumb.
Calm down Princess, we're here together. His thoughts were soft and gentle, trying to keep her feet grounded before she blew the place up.
"I'm sorry, Marinette. I'm really am truly sorry for everything I've put you both through. I was selfish and arrogant. If I'd known I was fighting two young teenagers, one being my own son, I would have stopped." Gabriel spoke with some sincerity in his voice.
"Cut the crap father and just tell us what the hell you've done this time and who we're up against." Adrien felt Marinette place her hand on top of his.
Kitty, your turn to calm down.
"Carry on." Marinette announced, stepping into her Ladybug role.
"We stumbled on the Head of Osiris, a beautiful piece of pottery, as we toured the exhibit together and were offered a very private tour with the members of staff studying the display."
Adrien and Marinette sat, fingers entangled as they listened to the story. Marinette could feel the old guardian eyeing her and Adrien over. She tried to catch his gaze a couple of times but he immediately looked at the ground.
"It was there," Gabriel continued, "that our minds pieced all the hidden memories back together. About the Miraculous, about how you two defeated me, how Nathalie's personality seemed to change over night, Felix, the rings ... everything."
Master Fu suddenly spoke for his first time since the arrival.
"Osiris was an Egyptian King and the God of fertility, agriculture, the afterlife, the dead, resurrection, life, and vegetation. He was murdered brutally by his brother Set, who cut him up to pieces."
"This is pleasant, isn't it. So we're fighting against a God or his psycho brother?" Adrien queried.
Gabriel expression winced at Adrien's words. He now knew how much trouble his son went into to protect everyone around him, he was terrified at how blasé he seemed at just throwing himself out to fight. Looking between the two young adults in front of him his heart ached. If it wasn't for him neither of them would be in this position, neither would have to risk their lives. But then neither of them would have found each other either.
"Actually Set is the God of deserts, storms, disorder, violence, and foreigners. After Osiris' wife, Iris, had found each piece of Osiris' body she made him into a mummy and resurrected him to impregnate herself. Their son, Horus, became Set's rival to the throne. Their often violent conflicts ended with Horus' triumph, which restored Ma'at to Egypt. Balance, harmony, and solving the conflict between order and disorder."
"The yin and yang." Marinette whispered quietly. Adrien slipped an arm around her waist and mentally told her not to panic, though every slight movement and facial expression went against what he was asking her to do.
"It seems there was a scroll touring with the exhibit containing possible resurrection incantations. However this was stolen four years ago whilst the exhibition was in Paris." Gabriel continued. "We believe the scroll has been used for someone to embody Set. We also believe that's linked with the butterfly and fox Miraculous' disappearance."
"So you think the same person has the Miraculous' and Set's soul?" Adrien asked. This seemed so far fetched he didn't know whether it was real or he was dreaming.
"We believe they are working together." Gabriel continued.
"Ladybug, Marinette ... we believe you are the target." Master Fu looked at Marinette with unease. He didn't want to be the one to deliver this information but felt he had too. This wouldn't be believable coming from Gabriel after everything they've been through with him.
"No." Adrien shouted as he stood up. Marinette jumped up straight away with him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Calm down kitty, we've been through things like this before and came out the other side." She knew he was shaking, she was too. They'd just got back together again. She couldn't lose him, and she couldn't disappear again. They'd come up with a plan together just like they always did. They would be ok.
"Adrien, Marinette is the image of Set's long lost lover Astarte. He's going to be trying to get her so she can be Queen to his new world." Gabriel stood up and walked towards his son. He placed one of his long fingered bony hands on Adrien's shoulder before he spoke again.
"We know who it is."
Master Fu stood up too and made his way over to the couple.
"And we both want to fight along side you. You're the best bug and cat team the world has ever known and I am so happy you are now united as one. I believe you will have received your power upgrades."
"Yes Master." They both announced.
"Master Fu, Gabriel, you've both been out of the fight now for six years. We can't expect you to just step back in." Marinette took Master Fu's hand in hers. She couldn't expect him to put his life on the line, not for her.
"I can be behind the scenes if you want me too, Ladybug. Just please let me help." She smiled at the old man. He became part of her family from the very first official meeting when Tikki was ill all those years ago. As much as she was enjoying being Guardian so was so glad to have him back for advice.
"Father, I can't expect you too either. How do I know you won't turn your back on us?" Adrien let go of Marinette and crossed his large masculine arms over his chest. Sizing up to his father. It was at this point Marinette realised he had no top on and his muscles were like something from Baywatch.
"I want to bring Nathalie back. I may have loved your mother, but I loved Nathalie too. As more than an assistant and friend. I think ... Nathalie was who I was meant to be with." Obviously Adrien wasn't thrilled by this announcement but he did believe what his father was saying. There was no denying of a rather large spark between Gabriel and Nathalie.
"What do you mean? Bring her back?" Adrien asked. As far as he was aware Nathalie was acting on her own accord.
"We believe there were two incarnations. The one for Set and one for Iris." Fu answered for Gabriel, who looked taken aback from his own admission.
"Osiris' wife?" Adrien turned his question over to Mr Fu after seeing the discomfort in his fathers eyes.
"Yes. Not only was she Osiris' wife and love, she was also his and Set's sister. It seems Iris has taken over Nathalie's body."
"So Nathalie is Iris and I guess she's looking for Osiris? Which could be why she took Felix?" Marinette was next to speak, trying desperately to piece this puzzle together in her head. She felt as though she needed a whiteboard and a ton of post it notes.
"Maybe. We're not too sure how Felix ties into all of this." Marinette and Adrien nod their heads.
"So Set is after Mari? You said you know who he is?" Adrien looked between the two males in front of him as he threaded a protective arm around Marinette again.
"Victor." Gabriel said low.
"Victor? As in executive Victor?"
"Yes" whispered Gabriel.
Adrien kicked the side table over next to him with a deep growl from his throat. Running his hands down his face he made his way to look at the falling snow from his window. He'd never say he didn't like being a superhero but boy was it a fucked up life to live. If someone's not trying to steal your jewellery, they're trying to kill you.
Marinette reached for her phone and flicked through the photos again. When she came to the ones of the group standing behind them she showed it to Gabriel.
"Is that Victor?" Gabriel took the phone from her hand and nodded.
"Yes." He handed it back before sitting on the sofa head in his hands. Master Fu looked between Marinette and Adrien.
"Go to him Master. You were more like a father to him than his own." She glared down at Gabriel, who physically flinched at her statement. Sitting on the arm chair she grabbed her coffee and began to drink it. Staring at the man who'd ruined her best friend and lovers life.
"Adrien." Master Fu stood next to Adrien and looked out the window. "Lovely view you have up here." Adrien let a smile form and looked at the old man.
"One of the reasons I wanted this so much. It reminded me that I now have freedom. That I have a life." Master Fu pulled his eyes from Adrien and over to Marinette.
"She's the strongest Ladybug I've ever had the honour of meeting and I've met a few."
"She's amazing." Adrien agreed. "A few months ago she had to have her memories stripped of our love. My heart felt like it had been ripped out and stamped on."
"What happened young kitten?"
"She'd been under Notre Dame when it collapsed. Brain damage, collapsed lung, broken spine ... you name it she had it." He rested his hands against the bar attached to the window. "I relive it constantly in my dreams. I wasn't quick enough to save her. It's my duty to protect her and I messed it up. I can't risk that happening again."
"She's here now and healthy, and I'm guessing she's Miraculously received her memories back?" Adrien scoffed at the use of Miraculously.
"Yeah something like that. If she hadn't have been pregnant she would have died. It's just a shame we lost our baby." Adrien closed his eyes and looked at the floor.
"What happened to the baby?" Fu knew what he needed to ask now and he was getting quite excited. If Adrien answered the way he expected there was a possibility of them coming out on top.
"It would have died but Shén jī managed to transfer the baby into a kwami."
"Let me guess; half bug and half cat." Fu smiled at Adrien. Adrien looked down at Fu with confusion all over his face.
"Y-y-yes?" His eyebrows knitted together as he stared down at the old man. He knew Fu was short but Adrien must have hit a massive growth spurt as Fu looked like a munchkin.
"A split of creation and destruction?"
Adrien nodded at Fu.
"A perfect balance of harmony?"
Adrien nodded again. Fu glared at him, had he not figured it out yet? How dense was this boy?
"Can you really not see where I'm going with this?" Fu looked exasperated, could Adrien really not figure it out.
After a few moments Master Fu was quite sure he saw a lightbulb light up over Adrien's head. Adrien's eyebrows shot up and he marched his way back over to Marinette.
"Hey Princess." Marinette turned around to face Adrien, concern written on her face from his sudden reappearance. He crouched down next to her and took her delicate small hands in his large masculine ones.
"I think it's time you met Hugo."
