CHAPTER SIX | EZRA POV

I loosened the collar of my shirt and unbuttoned the first few studs. The humidity down here is almost suffocating, sweat beaded my skin and nearly drenched my shirt.

Before me sat a pitiful being. It's head hung low, with a heaving chest. It's limbs littered with lacerations from the past interrogation sessions.

After all this torture, It still refused to crack.

From my peripheral vision Troy eyes me with a raised brow. Troy Rodriguez is a trusted member of our council and our right hand since we were pups.

Well, Beta? She's not cracking and it's been a week. He mind-linked to me.

My eyebrows creased together,  weighing the pros and cons.

My body jitters restlessly and I strive to maintain my exterior to focus on the task at hand. But how can I?

My mate is here, injured.

The being finally lifts it's head and begins sniffing.

"Wendigo," I call.

The Wendigo's body stiffens but finally looks up; we lock eyes. At first glance, she looks human. Most monsters do.

After seeing them so often it became easier to differentiate.

"That's a different smell," She mutters with a small smirk.

I clench my teeth at her remark and ignore it and Troy's quizzical gaze.

"How did you breach our first wall?" I ask, lowly. My patience thinning by the minute.

It blatantly ignores me and cocks her head to the side, "Something smells delectable, If I answer will I get a bite?"

A loud ringing resounds in my head, my surroundings become quiet as if everything paused.

She's referring to our mate. My wolf snarls. Silence It.

Gladly. I growl in agreement, as I feel my canines begin to elongate.

"Ezra-," Troy begins, but his voice quickly phases out as my focus lazered onto the Wendigo.

All I see is red. One second I was standing beside Troy, and the next I had my hand wrapped around a throat with erratic, frenzied movements attempting to evade my grip.

"Ezra!" Troy calls once again, in attempts to bring me back.

But it's too late.

The room resounds with the crunch of it's neck snapping in my grip, before the room fell into silence.

I release my grip and immediately the body limply falls onto the prison floor with a hard thump.

Troy releases a long sigh as he brought a hand up to massage his temples. "Ryder will not like this." He mutters, eyeing the mess I've made.

"I don't give a damn, we went long enough without any information. There was no point in keeping it here any longer." I scowl, making my way towards the stairway exit.

Troy eyes me with furrowed  eyebrows, "Why did you get so heated all of a sudden?"

I almost faltered in step at his mention, "I didn't."

To which he scoffed in response, "We've known each other long enough for me to see through your lies."

I stop short before the door, where pack members treaded and turned to him slightly.

I would tell you, but you wouldn't believe me. I barely do myself. I link.

Try me. He responds.

I hesitate slightly, Although Troy is my most trusted confidant- I know how bewildering it will sound.

My mate is here, and she is human.

He pauses in step, eyes widening with my confession but makes a small smile to the passing people.

So what you're saying is that you've found your mate, a human, something that is a myth- before I could even find mine. I'm starting to think that I've been cursed.

I almost laugh at his now sullen expression before falling into seriousity. The pain that he is feeling is genuine. All Lycan's yearn for their other half. Everyday after their first shift, when they're considered a full Lycan, their wolf begins to long. And everyday without their mate feels like the other half of you is missing.

I've known this prior to Amara.

AMARA POV

They refused to let me do anything myself. The reason? I am unfit in my 'state'. Granted my back is battered but I'm still mobile. They finished in record time, then addressed my wounds with a cold paste and white bandage that wrapped around my waist and over my shoulder. Before leaving my to dress myself within ten minutes.

What she failed to consider was the lack of clocks in this ridiculously grandeur room. My things are nowhere in sight either. My wallet, phone-or bag. Nothing.

With the towel wrapped tightly around my body, I exit the bathroom and look at the clothes that lay folded neatly on the bed.

A champagne colored fabric with a light glossy sheen. I pick it up to confirm my guess; silk. The material unravels in my hands, revealing a long sleeveless dress.

My gaze falls onto the rest of the materials that lay on the bed and I almost cried in relief.

Underwear. At least they had the decency to give me some, instead of having to walk around commando.

I waste no time changing before the woman from earlier can return.

Are they going to sell me into prostitution?

A pair of honey eyes flashes across my memories, parted red lips- eyebrows screwed together in worry.

The stranger from my dreams.

Did I really dream of who would be responsible for my demise?

A knocking on the door has me jumping in my spot. I prepare for the earlier girl-- maybe I could at least get an answer as to where my belongings are.

She enters the room in slight exasperation, raking a hand through her unruly curls. Her attention turns to me and she offers a small smile.

"I'm sorry- I realize that we didn't exchange names yet. I'm Hyacinth."

Her warm personality almost has me letting my guard down- but I can't forget the bigger picture. I've been kidnapped.

"Amara," I respond, hesitantly.

She nods at this, then opens the door wider and gestures me out. "It's nice to meet you Amara, now if you will follow me."

I gulp down my discomfort for the unknown, but woodenly nod in response.

I try to contain my awe as we exited the room. The decor is nothing less than grand. I don't even think shows on TV could replicate the magnitude of magnificence the hallway alone holds. I follow Hyacinth distractedly though the halls and barely notice that she stopped. We're stood before a large maple-wood double door. Hyacinth reaches for the door knob, a slightly muffled conversation comes from inside. Although it's slightly muffled, it's easy to decipher what they're saying.

"The Beta's mate is human." Came a voice from inside.

"Well that's a paradox." Someone scoffs in response, a woman with a familiar voice I can't pinpoint.

"Elaborate--,"

Hyacinth pushes the door open, with a loud creak, revealing an intimate yet spacious office. The room falls into silence, as their gaze turns to us.

On the large oak desk at the center of the room sat a man. A five o clock shadow lines his square jaw, paired with disheveled jet black hair and golden eyes. I gasp at the sight of it. I've never seen anyone with eyes that color.

He emanates an energy that's incomprehensible. He just seemed to exude a prominent aura.

I look away and turn to the people seated on the velvet couch and matching chair. But suddenly, everyone became irrelevant.

My heart thuds into my chest when my gaze meets his.

Once again, the familiar feeling of my skin becoming hypersensitive and lighting itself on fire floods back. I cross my arms over me, in a quiet attempt to calm down.

Hyacinth makes a sheepish bow and promptly exits the room.

The woman shakes her short bob, with an eye roll. "How many times do we have to remind her to knock."

"Giada," The man who sits on the desk warns, finally lifting his view from the papers in front of him to her.

Giada, promptly wafts a hand at this,"Back to what I was saying. It doesn't make any sense, that whole sentence contradicts itself. Yet there it is, standing before us." She nods her head in the direction of me, with a look of disdain.

It? I know she didn't just refer to me as an 'it'.

I narrow my eyes and open my mouth to respond when a low growl fills the room.

His eyes glazed into a smoldering amber hue. As his line of vision snapped to Giada's direction.

"She is not an it, she is my mate." He growls through clenched teeth.

"And you will give her respect as you do I."

CHAPTER DISCUSSIONS

• How do you think Amara will respond to the conversation she walked into?

•  What do we think of our characters thus far?
