CHAPTER FOUR | AMARA POV
That feeling.
As if your heart is slipping out of your chest while you fall backward off of a cliff.
That's the best way to describe how I feel now.
I stumbled out of the first exit I could find in that maze of a restaurant. Then welcome the cool night air that nipped my skin. I take a deep inhale, clutching my chest in an attempt to calm my rapid breathing.
That can't be the man who has been haunting my dreams.
I lean back onto the brick wall, thankful to be away from the vigorous energy of the entrance. A few meters away stood a forest line, the whistling amongst the trees made it feel more ominous than it should be. I wrap my arms over my chest for more warmth.
It's been a long day, I reason internally. Trying to make sense of the mess today is. I need to go home and rest.
I'll just text an apology to Jace-,
The creaking sound of a door swinging open steals my attention.
His eyes fall onto me almost immediately upon exiting. His brows drew together in worry, "I feel like I've asked you this more than you'd like today. But are you okay?" Jace closes the door from behind him and goes to stand before me.
I give a small smile as a feeble attempt to lighten the mood, which felt to be a futile effort. "I was about to text you-- I'm sorry for all of this."
He shakes his head, "It's okay, things happen."
We stood in comfortable silence, for what seemed to be a while. With just the sound of the breeze swaying through the trees, to accompany us.
"If you don't mind me asking, what brought you to Mountain View?"
I lift my gaze to meet his at this, "I just needed to get away from home. To breathe."
His eyebrows furrow at this, "Were they abusive?"
I let out a dry laugh as his words simmer in my head. I can't exactly unpack my baggage now. I just got here to run away from it.
"No, I just have an overbearing mom and an equally suffocating older sister."
For a second, he held my gaze before he pulls away to look tensely towards the door that we exited.
"I know we've just met, but can you trust me for a second?" He asks, distractedly before turning back to me.
I furrow my eyebrows together at this, and part my lips to respond when he pulls me tightly to his chest. His arms wrapped around me, hands pressed tightly against my back.
Although confused I purse my lips together in silence. All I can hear is the sound of the wind whistling through the trees.
I place my hands on his chest, ready to push him away when a low croak cuts through the wind.
Jace's hands outstretch from it's position on my back, and I immediately stiffen upon the feeling of something cold and hard, a difference from the warm palms I earlier felt.
My blood runs cold, goosebumps line my skin simultaneously as I try to make sense of the drop in my heart.
From my peripheral vision, a dark blur rushes towards us- before I could brace myself we jolt from the force, nearly knocked onto our knees.
A searing pain stretches down my back and I want to scream at the pain. My eyes blur, with a sudden sense of heat enclosing the expanse of my eyes, I shut them tightly and try to catch my breath.
When I open them again, a Violet pair of eyes stare back at mine. It's laced with confusion and surprise. My gaze trails to the rest of his features.
Canines.
Violet eyes.
The 'hand' that held my back is pulled back. My eyes fall onto it. A claw, with white fur matted with my blood.
I want to scream but the shock steals my voice. My head spins with questions, the pain cripples me- is this how it ends?
This can't be real.
His claw reaches out, to which I flinch and back onto the wall. His Violet eyes scans me, an expression stricken with guilt, when a loud screech pierces the air. My eyes struggle to focus, spots of black invades my vision. I crumble onto the floor, unable to stand any longer. Jace's feet shifts back tentatively, before rushing away from me. I look up to his retreating figure in betrayal but I can barely make out his figure in the distance.
Trust you for a second?
I was stupid for trusting so easily.
From my peripheral vision, someone exits.
The feeling of my skin almost crawling- returns. A painful pull to be closer to him.
With each moment it becomes increasingly difficult to focus. Spots of black begin to cloud my vision.
"The Half-Breed." The stranger growls, making a step towards Jace's retreating figure, when a female voice exclaims.
"Ezra!"
By now everything feels like it's happening in slow motion.
"Human's don't heal as we do- if you want your mate to live we need to leave, now." The female voice advises, gravely.
The man- that has been haunting my dreams, the one that I'm painfully yearning for without a-god-damn-explanation; stoops down before me. His hand, cups my cheek and I shiver from the warmth. Without thought, I fall into it.
"I didn't wait all my life to watch you disappear now."
His words sound cloudy, almost as if a sea of water is between us. My eyes fall onto his, despite the daunting atmosphere, his eyes are warm like leaves on a fall afternoon. I raise my hand slowly, barely grazing his jaw.
"So you were real," I mutter, breathlessly.
His lips part to respond, but I can't hear a thing. A heaviness cloaks my body, and I don't fight it. Instead, I succumb to the darkness.
