Chapter 013: Memoirs from him
"Haewon?!"
The deep voice startled her a bit, sending her into shock wave and blocking her mind for a few seconds, not believing the dark haired man standing before her, her eyes glistened in tears.
"Yoongi?"
"It's been ages!" he chuckled in delight, "how have you been??"
"Better that I see you now."
Sitting in a small but warm oriental cafe as she expected him to pick, they chatted with Taehyung excusing himself to give them a few moments.
"How are you doing?" she asked as his eyes oogled up to her, the black pair of rounded glasses framing them. Contrasting his pale skin, her senior sat there in an all black outfit.
"Better than ever," he added, "I'm a TA now at the Literature department."
Content filled her heart at what her mate had accomplished, his lifelong dream, "I'm so happy for you."
His lips spoke of a smile that his eyes didn't, "I knew you would be,"
"It's been hard to reach you, lately."
Her mind swirled in excuses to give but she knew that he knew better, "sorry about that."
"Don't apologize," he brushed it off, "tell me, what have you been up to?"
"Nothing much," her fingertips swirled around with the wooden spoon in her coffee.
Silence engulfed them, with Haewon picking on excuses to say whilst the later tried to choose his words wisely.
"You know I've been waiting to tell you that for ages," he said in a downcast tone, "that I passed and got to be a TA, that I'm preparing my Master's to scurry up that staircase,"
He took a deep breath, "that I'm living the dream, our dream,"
"You were the only one I wanted to call that day even though we no longer talked, but I heard you changed your phone,"
"I'm not trying to blame you or anything, when you left everything behind you said you were moving on to a happier life and I just wanted to know," his hands held onto his cup tighter, clutching at what he hoped was the answer to the wall built between them, "did you get there yet?"
"Did you?" she asked whacking him into silence, how did she get there, she thought. Was that how it started? She couldn't recall but she definitely knew that was the biggest leap.
How did we get here?
The boy that used to study with her in the cafeteria, the one that shared those sleepless nights, typing lengthy essays and admitting last minute assignments, her senior that she used to help now stands a man before her, the youngest to be professor. The messy hair and over sized sweatshirts now replaced with a turtleneck topped by a trench coat and styled hair.
The cheeky smile, the deep dark eyebags were now gone and she couldn't help but notice how sharper his jaw got, or how his features were more defined now and his eyes, wiser, older, lonelier. She studied them for she didn't know if she could ever see him again.
Time does change a man.
It even changed his taste in coffee, staring at the once was caramel macchiato, now the dark black americano stands before her on the table, he noticed her stare.
"They don't taste as sweet as they used to," he tittered sadly, "the caramel ones,"
"They did when we were at college."
Glancing at her hands fiddling with her cup, he leaned forwards holding them. Haewon flinched at the sudden touch but eased in and relief washed over him after her startling reaction.
"Just want you to know that I still got your back and if you ever think of coming back, I'll be waiting for you," he opened his arms widely spreading them, "on the other siiide with wide open armss," he sang horribly catching everyone's attention as she laughed out loud, both causing a scene, not caring for a thing in the world for few moments and it was in those negligible moments that both realised;
Nothing has changed.
