Sofia careful manoeuvred through the crowd muttering half hearted apologies when ever she bumped into anyone. Her eyes never strayed from the gorgeous woman across the room, the ring in her pocket felt hot against her thigh.
Luscious locks of raven hair framed the woman's heart shaped face. Her cute button nose that Sofia adored but she hated wrinkled as she laughed at whatever gossip her clearly intoxicated aunty was telling her.
“Crippled,” she barely spared the man a glance as the wheel of her wheelchair ran over his foot, too focused on her love to really care what the man thought.
The short journey was over much too fast and Sofia felt her throat close up in anxiety.
Skye smiled the instance she show her friend reaching down to hug her, “Sofia I'm so glad you made it.”
At her auntie’s not so subtle cough Skye hurried to reintroduce them. “Aunt Becky you remember Sofia right? She went to school with me, she's my next neighbour now.”
Sofia cast Skye a heavy look that seem to say, ‘is that all I am?’
When Skye dropped her gaze so did a Sofia’s stomach maybe that wasn't such a good idea.  Maybe she'd been getting the wrong signals after all Skye was just experimenting.
Aunt Becky just hummed giving her a look of disdain before stumbling off.
“Just your neighbour?” Sofia asked softly her heart in her throat. Please don't do this. Sofia pleaded in her mind.
Looking uncomfortable Skye stared at her feet shuffling awkwardly, “yeah just my neighbour.”
All her hope and dreams for their future sunk down to the tips of her toes. “You told me you loved me. We spent a year near constantly in each other's company. I thought you felt for me what I feel for you.” Sofia’s whispered devastated looking imploring into Skye's namesake eyes begging wordlessly for answers.
“I thought you'd understand that my leaving you so abruptly meant that whatever happened between was over.”
Suddenly becoming aware of the potential for eavesdroppers  Sofia asked,  “can we go somewhere and talk.”
“I think it's best if we don't.”
