Summer was finally here, and I was happy—really, really happy. I was dating the guy of my dreams. I had gotten closer to Adel and Adrian; he was even starting to get used to Miles and me. Theo and Enzo loved pulling endless pranks on Miles, and Daphne was always there when I walked into our dorm, giggling like a little girl. She even called him "boyfriend material."
Riddle and I only talked when we were in the same class. We never brought up that one day in the restroom, and I was glad he didn't mention it. I had only tutored Luke once this year, and the funny thing was, we only went over one page before he started asking me about Adel—her favorite color, birthday, book, hobbies—everything. I answered as much as I could.
"Need a little help with a pretty girl?" Miles came up behind me, grabbing my trunk in one hand and his in the other. We were already on the train, looking for a compartment. I was with my friends; Theo and Enzo led the way, while Daphne, Blaise, Draco, and Riddle talked about the Ministry, leaving me to my own thoughts.
"Oh no, Miles, I'm okay. Plus, you're already carrying your bags," I said, trying to take my trunk from him. I noticed he didn't have Athena with him. "Where's Athena?"
"That's why I'm here. Adrian's having his last Prefect meeting, so I thought I'd get my girlfriend and sit with her instead," Miles said, smiling. If I sat with him, I wouldn't see my friends until my birthday. But if I sat with them, I wouldn't see Miles either. Maybe I could split my time—sit with him for the first half and with my friends for the second.
"Fine, but only for the first half," I said, giving in. His smile widened. I told Daphne I'd catch up later, and she nodded when she saw Miles carrying my stuff. He led me to a compartment with only Athena, his Northern saw-whet owl.
I didn't have an owl—or anything, really. None of my siblings did. I usually borrowed Daphne's owl, and Adrian used Athena. Adel mentioned that Luke had an owl and let her use his sometimes.
I sat down and watched as Miles effortlessly lifted my trunk over his head to stow it on the rack. Quidditch had made him strong. He and Adrian often compared biceps and made me judge. I always said it was a tie.
"You like what you see?" Miles teased, sitting across from me with his trademark grin.
"No, actually, I don't," I said smugly, rolling my eyes.
He leaned in closer, making a funny face, and I lightly pushed him back into his seat.
"Oh, really? Because your eyes were glued to me. Just admit it—I'm hot," he said, pretending to preen and flexing his arms. "Strong, good-looking... anything else you'd like to add?"
"Annoying, stubborn—oh, and let's not forget very dramatic," I said, giggling.
"Why would you say that, Ari? That's rude and hurtful!" He placed a hand over his chest as though I had wounded him.
Then, he moved to sit beside me and grabbed my face, squishing my cheeks to make me look into his honey-brown eyes.
"Ariana Pucey, take that back," he said, his tone mock-serious.
I shook my head.
He pouted at my response and gave me his best sad puppy-dog eyes. I leaned in to kiss him, but he pulled away, letting go of my face. Crossing his arms, he huffed like a toddler.
"No, you're mean to me. I don't want any of your kisses," he said, dramatically. Now I knew where Adrian got it from.
I rolled my eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry, Miles. I didn't mean to offend you," I said sweetly, but he huffed again, turning his back to me.
I wrapped my arms around him, and he turned toward me, still pouting—but I could tell he was only messing around.
"You know what? Let me make it up to you. I'll get you whatever you want from the trolley. How does that sound?"
His eyes lit up at my words.
"Fine, but I also want a kiss on my cheek, nose, and forehead—and a chocolate frog," he said.
"Done," I replied.
"And the kisses will be every hour. Thank you."
"Really? Every hour?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, ma'am," he said, grinning as he pushed me toward the window before laying his head on my thighs. "And you have to play with my very soft hair."
I moved my right hand to his hair and let my left hand rest on his jaw, my thumb brushing back and forth over his cheek.
"Mmhmm, I could so get used to this. This is what I'm talking about," he murmured, closing his eyes.
I smiled down at him, unable to help the feeling of contentment that washed over me. My fingers gently tangled in his dirty blond hair, combing through the soft strands.
"You're so relaxed," I commented softly, tracing the line of his jaw with my finger.
"Because I'm with you, sweetheart," he said, his voice low and warm.
The word hit me like a wave, and I froze, suddenly aware of the way my heart skipped at the new nickname. "Sweetheart?" I whispered, feeling my cheeks flush.
Miles opened one eye and smirked. "Yeah, sweetheart. Is that so bad?"
I could feel the blush spreading across my face, but I tried to play it cool. "No, I just—" I stuttered before laughing softly. "You've never called me that before."
He grinned, eyes glinting with mischief. "Well, I think it suits you. You're my sweetheart, after all."
I bit my lip, a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. "Okay, well, if I'm your sweetheart, then... I guess I'll have to kiss you every hour, huh?" I leaned down to kiss his cheek, planting a soft peck there.
"Damn right you will," Miles grinned, turning his head just as I pulled back so that my lips brushed against his in a lingering kiss.
"You're not so bad, you know," I teased, settling back against the seat, picking up the book I had brought along. I cracked it open and started reading aloud to him, keeping my fingers running through his hair as I did.
He hummed in contentment, his arms around my waist as he rested his head on my lap. "Keep reading, sweetheart. I could listen to your voice forever."
I grinned, feeling like I was floating. This moment felt perfect—us, together, on the train to summer adventures. "Alright. But you're not allowed to fall asleep. I've got more kisses to give you."
Miles chuckled, tightening his arms around me. "Oh, don't worry. I'm wide awake. I want to enjoy every second of this."
And as the train sped along, we lost track of time—kissing, laughing, and dreaming about the summer we'd spend together. I could already picture us on picnic dates, lounging in the sun, making memories we'd talk about for years to come.
"Sweetheart," Miles murmured again, and my heart fluttered in response. He just thought it was cute, how easily my blush deepened, but I didn't mind. With him, I felt like I could be myself, and maybe that was all that mattered.
It had been a while since I sat with Miles. I had to leave, even if I didn't want to. I glanced down at him, still comfortably nestled in my lap, his eyes wide with exaggerated sadness.
"I have to go find my friends, Miles," I said, brushing my fingers through his hair one last time. "I'll be back, don't worry."
"No, please," he said dramatically, clutching my thigh with both hands like he was afraid I might disappear forever. "Don't leave me, sweetheart. My love for you is endless. Please don't go," he said, his voice teasing yet a little over the top. "I might wither and die without your presence."
I rolled my eyes, unable to stop the smile tugging at my lips. "You're such a drama queen," I said, pushing him playfully off my lap. "You'll live, trust me.
But just as I got up, the door to the compartment swung open, and none other than Adrian walked in. His eyes immediately landed on the sight before him—Miles lounging comfortably with his head on my lap, his hands still clasped around my leg, looking up at me with what could only be described as an exaggerated, love-struck expression.
Adrian froze, blinking a couple of times as if trying to process the image in front of him. Then, without missing a beat, he stepped into the compartment, narrowed his eyes at Miles, and spoke with the kind of deadly calm I only saw when he was genuinely pissed off.
"Bletchley," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low, "get the fuck off my sister. Just because I let you date her doesn't mean I'm so happy about it."
Miles, still half-lounging, gave Adrian a mock salute. "Hey, I was just admiring the view," he said with a smirk. "You know how it is, mate. I can't help myself."
Adrian's gaze flickered to me. I simply shrugged, rolling my eyes.
"It's not like you didn't know we were dating," I shot back, crossing my arms. " Miles, I really do need to find my friends."
"Ugh, fine," Miles said with a groan, slowly sitting up, though his playful grin never faded. "But don't be long, sweetheart. I'll miss you."
I leaned down to kiss him on the cheek before standing up, adjusting my bag. "I'll be back, drama king. Try to survive without me."
"Impossible," Miles muttered under his breath, but I heard him loud and clear as I left the compartment.
Adrian let out a deep breath, his eyes following me as I left, but the moment the door clicked shut, he turned back to Miles. "You've gotta be kidding me, mate. Can you not act like such a lovesick idiot in front of my sister? It's bad enough I have to deal with you two," Adrian said, shaking his head. "You're a pain in my ass, Bletchley, but you're still my best mate. Don't think that means I won't kick your arse if you mess with her."
Miles sat back against the seat, looking entirely unfazed by Adrian's words. "Adrian, relax. I'm not going anywhere. I know she's your baby sister, but I'm not dumb enough to hurt her," he said with a wink. "Besides, she's not going anywhere either. I'm already wrapped around her little finger."
Adrian gave him a pointed look. "You may be wrapped around yher finger, but you still better remember who her brother is. Keep your hands to yourself, and maybe I won't have to start a fight."
"Deal," Miles said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "But if you ever wanna join us on one of our picnic dates, feel free. I'm sure she'd love to have her big brother tag along."
Adrian gave him a disgusted look. "Yeah, not happening. I'll just keep an eye on you, and I'm sure you'll behave."
With that, Adrian gave Miles one last glare before lying back down. Miles just shrugged, shaking his head with a grin, but I knew he didn't take Adrian's warnings seriously.
As I walked back down the hallway to find my friends. I heard Theo's and Enzo's loud mouths and opened a compartment door.
"Oh, look who decided to leave her boyfriend for us," Daphne said, raising an eyebrow. "Did you give him a kiss goodbye, or was he too busy being a dramatic little lovebird?"
I rolled my eyes at her. "You guys are awful," I said with a smirk, sitting down beside her. "Miles is just... Miles. He's being all clingy, but he'll survive."
Theo snickered. "I bet he won't. He's probably writing you a poem right now about how he's lost without you."
"You don't even know the half of it," I replied, laughing. "But seriously, we're going to have a fun summer. Miles has promised picnic dates, and trust me, you'll be hearing all about them when I get back."
They all groaned dramatically, teasing me about my "boyfriend" and how I'd totally duped them all for him. It was a joke, of course, but I couldn't help but grin as I imagined the summer ahead with Miles. Even if my brother was still being a pain, life felt perfect.
