Year one

"Ari, will you hurry up? The train will leave without us," Adrian, my older brother, said as I hugged Mum goodbye one last time."Oh, stop, Adrian. Your sister is only saying goodbye," Mum replied. "Behave, you two. I don't want to hear that either of you got into trouble.""Yes, yes. Can we go now?" Adrian asked, tapping his foot impatiently as if he had somewhere more important to be.I hugged Mum one more time before Adrian grabbed my trunk and started dragging it onto the train, opening and closing random doors, maybe looking for something or someone."What are you doing?" I asked, speeding up my steps to keep up with his long strides. Damn him and his long legs."I'm looking for Miles," he said over his shoulder, as if I should know who this Miles kid was. I rolled my eyes."Who?" I asked. Adrian was a second-year student at Hogwarts, and I was about to start my first year."Me," a random kid slid in front of us from a compartment on the right side."Miles! How are you, mate?" Adrian said, dropping both our trunks to give this kid a hug."I'm doing great, and you? And who's this pretty little lady?" Miles asked, stepping toward me."I'm—" I started, but Adrian cut me off."My sister, Ariana," he said, picking up the trunks again. "Did you find anywhere to sit?""Yup, right in here. Let me help you with that," Miles pointed at a door and grabbed my trunk from Adrian's hold.I learned that Miles was in the same year as Adrian and that he was a Slytherin who hoped to join the Quidditch team like Adrian. They chatted animatedly about their summer and their plans for the upcoming year. After what felt like hours on the train, it finally came to a stop. As we got off, I looked around in awe at the bustling platform. Adrian put both hands on my shoulders to get my attention."Okay, Ari, we have to go our separate ways now, but I'll see you in about an hour. You're going to get sorted into a house, and I'll see you then. Don't worry if you're not a Slytherin; you'll always be my sister," he said with a reassuring smile before leaving with Miles, who kindly looked back and gave me a thumbs-up."FIRST YEARS, this way!" a very tall man called out. I walked toward him along with some other nervous-looking kids.I met a girl on the boat ride who was full of herself. She told me her name was Pansy Parkinson, not that I asked. She had a pug-like face and a haughty air about her. I also met a shy boy named Theodore Nott, who I did ask for his name. He seemed nice, if a bit reserved. The rest of the journey was a blur. A professor explained the four houses, an old hat sang a funny song, and Harry Potter got sorted into Gryffindor, not that I cared much. I just wanted to go to bed and sleep."Ariana Pucey," the professor called.I walked up the steps and sat on the chair, wondering if they cleaned it after each student."They do clean the chair. Now let us see what house you'll be in," a voice said in my head, startling me."Are you in my head?" I asked, amazed."Yes," it replied."Wicked," I thought."Hmm, just like most Puceys, you're cunning and you get what you want. But you have the soul of a winner, like your brother. Very well then, SLYTHERIN!" the hat declared. As I walked toward the Slytherin table, I bumped into someone waiting to get sorted."Sorry," I said."Watch it, Pucey," a boy said. He was about five inches taller, with curly hair, dark brown eyes, and a natural light tan. Overall, he was cute, but if he wanted to be a jerk, I could be one too."Whatever. I said I was sorry," I replied, rolling my eyes. I heard him scoff as I walked away.I sat down next to Adrian, who gave me a side hug and a smile. Miles, sitting across from him, gave me another thumbs-up."I'm proud of you, Ari, and so will Mum and Dad," Adrian said."Thanks, Ady," I said, grinning up at him. His smile faltered a bit at the nickname. Miles laughed, and Adrian kicked him under the table."Theodore Nott—Slytherin!" the hat announced.I smiled and clapped the loudest as Theodore walked over and sat next to me, giving me a small, shy smile."Mattheo Riddle—Slytherin!" the hat declared next. The boy I had bumped into got sorted into Slytherin. He was a Riddle, as in the son of Tom Riddle, aka the Dark Lord. My parents used to tell Adrian and me all about the Dark Lord and how great and powerful he was. Not that I cared much. I knew I was expected to marry a pureblood Slytherin and be the heir, since Adrian didn't want to be. He wanted to play for a famous Quidditch team instead."Is that the kid you bumped into, little Pucey?" Miles asked."Yeah, and he's a jerk," I said, scoffing."His dad is the Dark Lord, you know. My dad is a—you know," Theodore said shyly, pointing at his arm to hint that his dad was a Death Eater."Yeah, I know, but his dad is half-blood, so Riddle's not all that," I replied.Dumbledore made a speech after everyone was sorted, but I didn't care about what he had to say. I just wanted to eat and get some rest.As the feast began, I looked around at my new housemates. I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was the start of a new chapter, and despite the uncertainties, I was ready to embrace it.
