44. The Warden, The Leader And The Chief

The leader, a man who only knew the horrors of life. He and his brother were born in a place that knew only violence and hate. A cold place, where if one would want to survive, one must learn to become ruthless, heartless, and invincible.

Marshal, that was the name given to him by the man who took him and his brother off the streets. They were transported to a place called Talamaqui, located in one of the groups of islands that made up the province of Cambora.

The place is located near the equator where the seasons are not what the brothers were used to, needless to say, he and his brother had to adjust to their new environment. There, was where they learned how to become drug dealers and murderers. The man who adopted them was a ruthless person who raised both Marshal and Rudolf to become cold and vengeful people

His brother, Rudolf, only four years younger than him, is the love of his life. Women never held value to them, for him and his brother were the sons of a prostitute, a woman who abandoned them right after a new man entered her life. Yes, they were only maternal brothers, but they loved each other dearly.

What are women to them you might ask? Trash! That was how they saw them. The female population for both brothers was nothing more but an image of their mother. Money-seeking leaches who are willing to abandon their children for a better life.

You might want to know why that came to be. Well, when Marshal was twelve and his brother was eight, their mother met a dashing businessman. At first, everything was fine, but after two months of the relationship, their mother was asked by the man to marry him. Marshal still remembers their exact words. The businessman asked, "Will you marry me?" his mother replied "yes."

Marshal smiled when he heard that. Finally, he thought, his mother and them will have an opportunity to leave the stinky Town they live in. But something was requested by the man after his mother gave her answer. He said, "I only want you; those kids have to go. I want you to start a new life with me, without the reminder of what you once were."

Marshal was confident that his mother would not relent when he heard her gasp. But that gasp was not of shock, no, that gasp was followed by a wide smile, and words that would remain seeded inside his heart. The mother whom he thought the world of, answered, "I've always wanted to be rid of them. Please, take me away."

That same night, Marshal led his brother to their small bedroom and put him to sleep while he stayed up all night. In silence, he listened to how his mother packed her luggage. He heard the shuffling of things inside their small apartment. When morning broke, he saw a small ray of light enter their bedroom as his mother peeked inside, whispered goodbye, sent a flying kiss, and went her way. That was the last time he and his brother saw their mother, and the last time the both of them ever saw a woman as something other than the devil.

"Marshal, they're on the move!" One of his companions, a man by the name of Robbie yelled.

The leader took his rifle out of his car's trunk, gave his command, and positioned themselves to welcome their unsuspecting visitors.

It would be stupid if the police thought they could creep up on them. The previous batch of officers who came earlier that day had already given their plan away. He understood that a larger number of cops will arrive, as soon as the previous police mobile rounded back to the main road.

Marshal deduced that the mobile would eventually inform the higher authorities, but it didn't matter. They were prepared, and the police were not the only ones who had a backup.

"Marshal, there seemed to be a few numbers of them headed our way, but our man on top of the wall said there was at least a few dozen of them standing a few kilometers away, minutes ago."

"They grouped themselves," Marshal replied with a grin.

The land surrounding the prison building had no trees, other than the occasional shrubs which could be used to hide the police coming their way, but, ten meters from where the prison stood was nothing but an open field. Marshal smiled at the thought of it. Even if the police decided on an attack from different directions, the renegades would have the upper hand. They will see them coming as soon as they entered the desolate field.

"Chief, don't you think they will see us coming?" one of the officers asked.

The chief glanced at the worried men. They were about to spread out and walk toward their given positions. "Don't worry, the geographical structure of the land surrounding this prison will make it impossible for those assholes to see us."

The officers gazed at him curiously, seemingly asking what he meant by that.

Evan Balbosa, it took a lot of sacrifices for him to gain the position as the chief of police. He sacrificed his time, life, and even his marriage, just to gain the title he desperately wanted.

He was married for seventeen years to his wife Loretta, before she filed for divorce and left his, as she quoted, sorry ass. He loved his wife, but he barely had time to show how much. His work demanded a lot of his attention, and somewhere along the way, he forgot that he was also a husband. The divorce shook him a lot, but it didn't deter him to continue with his work. When Loretta made it clear that he either leave his job or she leaves him, he understood that the police station held a bigger portion of his heart.

He accepted the divorce, without so much as a tear in his eyes.

"Chief, what do you mean?" his man yelled. Evan smiled at them and pointed a finger towards the open mass of land before them, then said, "The land here is not elevated. It may look like it, but the land on the side and back portion of the building has a higher elevation.

"What difference will that make, they can probably see us still." An officer with a 45 caliber, questioned.

"There is a higher mass of land between the ground we're standing on and the prison building. Once my team gets to them, the rest of you can all attack without being noticed."

"I don't get it." another man answered.

Frustrated, the chief sat down and began to draw on the ground. "Imagine there's a hill between us and them, even if they had snipers or telescopes, they won't see the one's coming from the side, or the back."

"Well yeah, but they could probably see beyond it if they were positioned on top of the wall." One officer suggested.

The chief, although aware of the gravity of what the man said could only smile. "Let's stick with they won't see us, that's all we've got right now." He murmured solemnly.

After understanding what the chief meant, the team stealthily moved toward their designated positions.

Chief Evan led his team to the front of the prison grounds, but as soon as their silhouette appeared, a continuous shot was fired from the prison building towards them.

The lambs that decided to enter the lion's den, finally found themselves fighting for their lives.

(North wing - Inside the prison building)

"Protacio, you can either keep your head intact and get me out of here, or I can start killing each one of these prisoners until I find where your old ass is hiding," Rudolf screamed.

Just as he said so, Rudolf's man took one of the prisoners nearest to them and shot him in the head. It happened in a split of a second, but what they didn't expect was that some of the prisoners managed to get a hold of the police guns that they came across, whilst making their way back to the North Wing.

A shot was immediately fired towards Rudolf and his men, which pushed them to run towards the entrance of the North wing.

A continued exchange of bullets reigned inside the North wing before silence enveloped the prisoner's side. Thinking they have out-bulleted the convicts, Rudolf and his team slowly entered the space that held the prison cells.

But the drug lord's eyes widened in disbelief when he found the warden himself, standing in the middle of the hallway between the cells.

Smirking, Rudolf asked, "Giving up warden?"

But his face suddenly turned pale when out of the corners, a bunch of prisoners emerged, along with the ones that accompanied Protacio earlier.

The renegade's men immediately fell to the floor when each of them received a bullet in different parts of their body.

The warden, standing proud and tall in front of Rudolf smiled and said, "It takes a true leader to lead his men into safety 74."

Rudolf glanced towards the group of prisoners that surrounded him and his fallen men. "Don't you all want to leave this place? Why are you fighting for him?" The frustrated convict screamed.

"Yep, 95 had a great shot at that," one of the prisoners answered.

Rudolf faltered, but after a while, he grinned and said, "Hey, we can still work this out, my brother and his men are all outside, by this time, he probably found a way to open this damn building."

"Nah, we're cool," Sebastian answered whilst smiling at Rudolf mockingly.

"I'm offering you freedom, you fool!" Rudolf screamed in frustration, but his words fell on deaf ears, which left him unbelieving of the scene before his eyes.

Warden Protacio walked towards Rudolf and whispered to his ear, "You have no idea what it takes to lead," then punched the convict in the stomach.

(East Wing-fourth floor)

Sheldon, amazed and confused kept his eyes on Oscar, who at that time was crouched beside him on a bed, inside one of the open prison cells.

"Why the hell did you drag me here, are you..." Sheldon immediately had his mouth covered by Oscar when a bunch of thugs walked past the cell, they were hiding in.

"Keep your mouth shut if you want to live, you stupid old man," Oscar whispered amidst clenched teeth.

"You're older than me," Sheldon answered, still unable to understand what they were hiding from.

Oscar's heart began to beat erratically, did Rudolf change his mind, and decided to send someone after him? I never should have partnered with that scum, Oscar thought to himself as another batch of footsteps walked past the cell.

After a few seconds, Oscar felt like a bucket of cold water was thrown over him, when a familiar voice said, "Rudolf decided that you're a liability after all."
