Chapter Six
(6 years later)
"Malfoy." A voice commanded, "Open this door.
Draco sighed before flicking his wand, the door clicked open and in walked Kingsely Shacklebolt, the minister of magic. Closing the door behind him, he took a seat in front of Draco's desk, his eyes bore into Draco. Draco looked up briefly before returning to the papers in front of him.
"We need to let you go." Kingsley said, although his voice was hard there was a softness behind the words.
"Why?" Draco said, unbothered by the sudden change.
"You know I've let you work here because you've changed and I know you have but you're going to get questioned soon. Your father tried to defend you but-"
"My father only did what he did, for himself." Draco said, coldly, "I'm not leaving this job."
"Dammit, Malfoy!" Kingsley slammed a hand on the table, impatiently Draco stared at him, "You have a wife and two kids. You have money! You don't need this job and if you stay here, I can't cover for you any longer. I've done it for years! Just leave this place and don't come back."
"If I get questioned then I get questioned. I have nothing to hide. I'm not a death eater." Draco said calmly.
"Don't Hermione and Haillie and Dray mean anything to you?" Kingsley asked, disgust etched in the wrinkles of his face. The Minister for Magic job didn't reduce his stress.
"Hermione is my world." Draco replied, enunciating every word.
"Then leave or else you'll get questioned and go to Azkaban and I won't stick up for you." Kingsley said, "So what's it going to be?"
"I won't go to Azkaban." Draco said.
"So you'll leave this place? If you leave, there's a chance you won't be questioned. You can't work for the ministry without being questioned." Kingsley said.
"I'm not leaving." Draco said, flicking his wand, the door opened, "Nice chat, Kingsley, my doors over there."
Kingsley glared at him before walking out, slamming the door shut and Draco went back to his papers.
------
When it was time to go home for Draco, he packed everything and left his office. Walking into the lift, he met Arthur Weasley, who looked older and stressed.
"Mr Weasley, how are you?" Draco asked, shaking his hand.
"Good, son. I heard you're getting questioned?" Mr Weasley asked, pressing a button for the 3rd floor.
"Maybe." Draco said.
"Why won't you just leave? You're basically rolling in money." Arthur said, turning his eyes on Draco, "Think about Haillie and Dray and Hermione. You have a whole family now."
Draco felt a sudden urge of anger towards everyone. He had heard the 'think of your wife and kids' many times.
"Sir, I can't leave. I don't want that filthy money my father made." Draco answered, the lift stopped at the floor, "Bye Mr Weasley."
Mr Weasley stared at him for a few heartbeats before walking out of the lift, a few people entered, side glancing at Draco, and the lift went down. Draco got out of the ministry and apparated home.
Opening the lock on his front door, he walked in and took his shoes off. He went into the living room to see Haillie and Dray.
Haillie and Dray were now six years old. Haillie had light brown hair that cascaded to her shoulders and her eyes were exactly like Draco's. Dray had darker grey eyes and his hair was curly and dark brown, like Hermione's.
"Daddy!" Haillie cried, walking over to him with her arms stretched.
Draco picked her up, giving her a kiss, he put her on his shoulders as she giggled and squealed.
"Where's your mum?" He asked and Dray pointed to the kitchen, not bothering to hug his father.
Draco went into the kitchen to see Hermione looking out of the window, even though it was dark.
"Hey, beautiful." Draco whispered, putting Haillie down, he leaned down to kiss her.
Hermione pushed him away, a slight frown on her face. Draco looked at her, confused.
"Haillie, go see what barbie's doing. Hermione said, ushering her out of the kitchen.
"But mummy-" Haillie stopped short by the look on Hermione's face.
Haillie walked out after pouting slightly.
"What's wrong?" Draco asked, wrapping an arm around her.
"Kingsley called," Hermione said, moving out of his grasp, "Drake, you have to leave the ministry or-"
"Or what?" Draco asked, leaning against the counter.
"Draco just leave you're work. We have money, you do not need to work!" Hermione said, frowning.
"I won't. I don't have anything to hide." Draco said, stubbornly.
He didn't want people to think he left the ministry just because he was a death eater. He already got weird looks from people at work.
"What if you go to Azkaban? What about me?" Hermione asked, "Why are you so stubborn?"
Draco rolled his eyes. The atmosphere changing drastically from warm family to cold distance.
"Don't give me that crap about not being able to live without me. You've lived without me before. We haven't been together forever." Draco yelled, rolling his eyes at her.
"We'll be together for the rest of our lives." Hermione said after a long pause and after staring at him like he was crazy. "What about Dray and Haillie?"
Draco slammed a hand on the table, making the knives and forks clatter together on their stand. He looked up at her, anger flaring in his grey eyes.
"You think I don't care about Haillie and Dray?! Do you think I don't care about you?! I'm not talking to you about this anymore. I won't leave the Ministry. Leave it at that." Draco said, moving towards the door a frown fixed on his face.
"Draco!" Hermione said, grabbing his arm, "If you cared about me, you would listen to me and not run away."
"Don't touch me." Draco said back, gently but firmly moving his hands away.
Hermione glared at him before walking past him and out of the kitchen.
She walked into the living room and took Haillie upstairs. Draco watched her until she was out of sight. Dray looked up to him but quickly looked away as Draco looked to him. Draco looked at his eyes and couldn't help but think of his father.
"Draco. He's your son." Hermione said, coming back down, watching as Draco just stared at Dray, "Not some piece of dirt on the carpet."
Dray looked up as Draco glared at Hermione. Draco took her arm and Hermione glared back at him.
"Let go of me. You wont hurt me, Draco." Hermione whispered.
"You sure about that?" Draco asked, threatningly.
"Daddy." A voice spoke out and Draco looked at Dray.
Dray's eyes were wide open and concern etched into every line of his face. Draco let go of Hermione, inwardly frowning at himself. What was he thinking, hurting Hermione?
Hermione took Dray upstairs, ignoring Draco, and tucked him in his bed. She read them a book until they fell asleep. Kissing their heads and leaving the door open, she went into her room, got changed and climbed into bed.
"What? Am I not getting dinner?" Draco asked, walking in and rolling his eyes.
"It's in the fridge." Hermione said, turning her back on him, "Microwave it."
Draco stared at her back. Anger boiled and surfaced. He slammed the door shut, making Dray and Haillie wake up. Hearing Hermione sigh out of frustration, Draco went downstairs and lay on the sofa.
When he heard the voices quieten and Hermione going back into her room, he fell asleep.
-------
"Get up, seriously Draco? The sofa? Is that how bad we're getting?" Hermione asked, shaking him.
Draco opened his eyes to see Hermione standing by him in her night gown. He glanced at the time and saw that it was nine in the morning. Hermione had made him breakfast.
"Eat your breakfast." Hermione said, pointing to it as Draco sat up.
"I'm not hungry." Draco said, getting up, "and I need to get ready for work."
Hermione paused sitting next to him. With a sigh, she took his hand and entwined their hands together.
"Leave the Ministry, Draco." Hermione said, watching their hands.
Draco sighed before ripping his hand out of her's, he grabbed Hermione's face and she could see how dark his eyes were. Anger.
"I won't leave my job." He said enunciating every word.
Hermione frowned deeply, before pushing him away.
"Why can't you just leave your job?! Why do you insist on... On getting sent to Azkaban? Are trying to get away from me and your children? Draco, we need you. I need you! If you won't leave the Ministry Draco... Leave this house." Hermione said, glaring at him.
Anger and fear suddenly built up, although the anger outdid the fear, as she realised what she had said but the look on Draco's face made her quiet.
"What was I thinking, getting married to you! We shouldn't have got married or had kids. Do you even love me?" Draco muttered, when Hermione didn't say anything, he shouted, "DO YOU?!"
Hermione jumped up off the sofa as Draco stood up. Running a hand through his hair, he leaned in closer to Hermione.
"Do you want me to leave and never come back? Because I will. Just say the word." Draco whispered, his mouth close to her's.
Hermione paused, not daring to breath. She looked into his eyes and he stared back.
"Will you leave you job?" Hermione asked and Draco shook his head, his hair flicking from side to side, "Then leave my house."
Hermione took her ring off of her finger and handed it to him.
"Okay... I want Haillie." Draco said, taking the ring.
"Draco. They're my kids. Don't take them away from me, especially Haillie. She needs a mother." Hermione pleaded, concerned.
"Don't worry. When I marry a pure blood, Haillie will have a mother." Draco said, smirking.
Hermione glared at him, the pent up anger poured out as she pushed him and Draco fell back but regained himself.
"How dare you?! Draco. She is my child." Hermione said, "And if you so much as touch her..."
"She's my child too. If you're forgetting, we made her together. Trust me. I will get her." Draco said.
Hermione's eyes brimmed full of tears at these words and she let out a sob. Draco rolled his eyes and walked past her.
"I'll get Haillie and go." He said.
Hermione heard him climbing the stairs and a few minutes later she heard him coming downstairs, Draco muttering to Haillie to sleep on, and the front door opened and shut with a bang.
Hermione lay on the sofa as the tears managed to leak out of her eyes. Hearing Draco's car start and drive away made her heart ache so bad.
