Chapter Four

The next few months, Hermione felt as though her back may break with two babies inside her. She lay in bed not wanting to get out, although she got bored easily and annoyed at Draco when he suggested she should get up. She got annoyed at lots of things, very easily.

Hermione had called Ginny, who had told her she and Harry had decided to keep the baby. It would be hard for them but they would make it through the pregnancy together. Besides, twins were a lot harder but Hermione didn’t tell her that.  Hermione was happy for them, she knew Harry would make a great father.

One day in April, 18th to be exact, she was in the kitchen. Draco was in the living room when she heard a knock on her back door. She opened it, not a clue who it was, forgetting the cup of tea she had been making and the pain in her back from standing upright.

‘Ron? What are you-’ Hermione asked, staring at Ron.

Ron ignored her and came in. Hermione quickly moved out of the way, wondering why he was here. She knew Draco wouldn’t like this but she was too curious to just throw him out.

‘Is he here?’ Ron asked, looking around the kitchen, ‘Malfoy?’

‘Well, my last name is Malfoy too so-’ Hermione said but Ron glared at her, ‘Draco is in the living room.’

Ron nodded and walked out, Hermione followed him. He walked into the living room and Draco looked up, instantly on his feet when he saw Ron. Ron grabbed the front of his shirt and glared at him, his eyes boring into her husband’s.

‘Wait, Ron-’ Hermione was cut off as a strange pain shot through her back.

She clutched her huge stomach and let out a soft moan as the pain subsided. When she looked up again, both Draco and Ron were looking at her with concern.

‘Are you alright?’ Ron asked before Draco could say anything.

‘Yes, it was just... Nothing. Don't hurt Draco.’ Hermione said, feeling fine now.

‘Get your filthy hands off of me.’ Draco said pushing his hands off his shirt.

‘Shut it, Malfoy. You're in no position to talk.’ Ron said, pushing him.

‘I haven't said two words to you!’ Draco pushed him back, frowning.

‘Not me but it seems like you're getting friendly, a bit too friendly with Pansy!’ Ron threw a newspaper at him, ‘Page six.’

Draco kept up his glare but opened the newspaper and inside it, Pansy could be seen holding her large stomach. She had told Rita Skeeter that the baby was Draco's.

‘That's bull-’

‘Draco!’ Hermione said, frowning.

‘That's a lie!’ Draco shouted to Ron, throwing the paper into his chest before pushing him, ‘and who are you to tell me this? Why are you trying to cause a rift between Hermione and I?’

‘Yeah? Well this picture isn't a lie,’ Ron said, taking the paper from him, he turned to a page and thrust it in his face, ‘you’re a cheater!’

Hermione's back hurt and another pain shot through her but she didn't say anything. She moved over to Draco to see the picture.

It was Draco and Pansy in a club. Pansy had draped herself over Draco and his hand rested on her upper thigh. They were kissing and laughing in the photo, not to mention, the empty glasses beside them.

‘Hermione, you have got to believe me. I didn't... This... I...’ Draco was lost for words as Hermione looked at him, feeling her heart ache slightly.

‘Draco, can you look me in the eye and tell me... Did anything happen that night?’ Hermione asked, trying to control her voice despite the pain in his stomach, shooting through her like electricity.

‘Hermione, something did happen,’ Draco started, and held his hands up when Hermione glared furiously at him, ‘but this was before I met you! I have not slept with any girl after-’

Hermione clutched her stomach as she felt the pain again. She let out a groan, feeling Draco’s hand around her back as he tried to keep her upright.

‘Hermione?’ Ron said, reaching a hand out to her, ‘We need to get her to the hospital.’

Draco took Hermione's hand and led her outside in his car, Ron followed and sat beside Hermione in the backseat much to Draco’s dislike. He glared at him through the mirror as Hermione kept her hands tight on her stomach.

‘Get out.’ Draco demanded to Ron.

‘Draco, my bag is upstairs.’ Hermione said quietly.

Draco narrowed his eyes at Ron but went inside the house and quickly returned with a bag. He threw it in the passenger seat and started the car as Hermione screamed louder, breathing quickly now.

Draco drove fast, staring at the road trying not to think of Ron holding his wife's hand in the backseat. Every few minutes, Hermione would moan because of the pain.

They finally got to the hospital, checked in. Hermione was led to a hospital room and onto a bed where she felt slightly more comfortable. Draco clasped her hand, shouting at Ron to get out of the room.

Ron left the room, glaring at him.

‘Believe me. That picture was ages ago and-’

‘Draco, I believe you.’ Hermione said, smiling through her pain.

Draco smiled too and kissed her forehead. He slowly rubbed circled over her hand, trying to keep her calm.

‘My two girls are impatient to get out,’ Draco said as Hermione moaned a bit louder.

‘Two boys.’ She corrected him.

Ron came in, holding an ice pack and a drink. He placed the ice pack on Hermione's forehead and it soothed her down. Draco glared at him, feeling jealous and annoyed since he was the father and he should be doing all of this for Hermione.

‘Stop it,’ Draco muttered, ‘she's my wife, not yours.’

Ron ignored him, sitting in the chair next to the bed as he tried to soothe Hermione with his words. Hermione didn’t mind that Ron was there which also annoyed Draco but he didn’t want to stress her out even more.

‘Draco, please...’ Hermione said and shrieked again, ‘Get me a doctor!’

‘You heard her, Weasel, go get a doctor.’ Draco said, nodding to the door.

‘Sure, anything for Hermione.’ Ron said, walking out.

‘You are terrible.’ Hermione murmured to Draco in between harrowed breaths.

Draco shrugged, letting go off her hand to put the ice on her forehead so she remained cooled. She could feel the contractions getting closer and closer. The pain intensity increased to a peak and then decreased every time.

Ron came in with the Doctor who did an overall check of Hermione. Pulling back, he looked at her.

‘You've been in early labour a long time. When did you feel these pains?’ The doctor asked, glancing at Hermione.

‘About... an hour,’ Hermione answered.

‘You're not ready just yet. I would say you have about 3 hours to go or it could be sooner. You should drink water and maybe eat a little. I'll come back and check.’ The doctor said and left after giving her some advice on how to handle the pain.

‘Three hours?’ Ron moaned, settling into a chair. Draco fought very hard not to frown; he’d stay here three days with Hermione if he had to!

‘Ron, go home. We'll call you.’ Hermione said between long breaths.

‘Sure thing,’ Ron said, patting her stomach lightly, ‘I'll be back in three hours.’

Ron walked out of the room and Hermione turned to Draco, grasping his hand.

‘You can go-’

‘No way. I'm here for you.’ Draco said, kissing her, he handed her the water.

---

(Three hours later)

Hermione screamed out loud, clutching Draco's hand, for a whole five minutes. Draco stroked her head and she finally stopped, breathing heavily as though she had just completed a marathon.

‘It's so much worse now,’ Hermione groaned, her head falling on the pillow, panting.

‘I'm sorry for putting two babies inside you.’ Draco muttered, ‘we really should have waited although I do want my two little girls.’

‘To be honest, I'd go through any pain for these babies.’ said Hermione.

‘Yeah but-’

Draco was cut off as Hermione screamed again, her eyes closing. Draco jumped at the shriek and screamed with her as she clutched his hand. Both of them screamed loudly and Hermione turned her head slightly to look at him, her eyes holding amusement.

‘Why are you screaming?’ Hermione asked as the pain slowed down.

‘Moral support! I'll get the doctor,’ Draco chuckled and ran out of the room.

Draco entered the room with the doctor. Hermione let him check her over to see how much she had dilated, hoping she was ready now since the pain was getting worse and worse with the time span getting shorter.

‘You're nearly ready. You won't feel any pain for about five minutes and then you'll feel immense pain and we'll get you pushing. Nurse!’ the doctor told her and called for the nurse.

The nurse came over and checked the monitors. Hermione turned to Draco,  feeling comfort when he took her hand.

‘Draco, I'm scared.’ She admitted, breathing heavily, ‘What if something happens to them or me? What if-’

‘Nothing will happen, okay? I'm here for you. Just be brave.’ Draco said silencing her.

They talked for about five minutes, Draco trying to calm her down, when all of a sudden the pain started. She could feel it growing and growing insider her until it reached the point where she screamed.

‘It's okay. It's okay.’ Draco kept repeating.

‘Draco, shut up!’ Hermione said, in between screams.

Hermione let out deep breaths but the pain didn’t ease at all. She felt impatient and angry at Draco’s comfort talk even though she knew he was trying to make her feel better. Draco, a bit taken aback by her attitude, still held on to her hand and she squeezed it with all she had.

‘Breathe and then push.’ The doctor said, calmly.

Hermione took in a deep breath, fighting the pain, and then she pushed as hard as she could, screaming and holding onto Draco.

Draco was rooted to the spot, not sure what to do or say.

‘Okay, breathe and push!’ The doctor stated.

Hermione did as she was told and the doctor said they could see the baby's head. She pushed and screamed and fought the pain overwhelming her insides until she heard a cry. Leaning her head back, the pain subsided. The doctor held up a small child in his arms.

‘It's a boy.’ He said, smiling.

Hermione looked at Draco who stared at the ground.

‘I told you, it'd be a boy.’ Hermione breathed out, slumping her head against the pillow.

Before Draco got to say anything, she screamed again. The doctor gave the baby to the nurse and she went to clean him as Hermione shrieked and pushed.

‘Give her the injection!’ The doctor shouted to a nearby nurse.

‘What injection? What's wrong?’ Draco asked, worried.

‘This baby is very stubborn and doesn't want to leave the womb. Okay, Hermione, we are going to inject you and after that you have to push hard,’ Doctor stated calmly and gestured the nurse to give the injection.

The nurse did as told and Hermione let out a shriek, feeling her voice start to crack as she sobbed from the pain. Draco was unable to see her like this, he held onto her hand as tight as he could. Hermione eyes drooped down.

‘Hermione, get up and push!’ Draco shouted, worried, ‘Damn it, Hermione! PUSH!’

‘Hermione, do NOT faint! Push. 1. 2. 3.... PUUUSH!’ A voice said, walking into the room, dressed in hospital wear.

Hermione opened her eyes, fighting the drowsiness to see Ron. He took her hand and shouted push. Draco got up and pushed Ron away from Hermione, they glared at each other but Hermione took Draco's hand and pushed as hard as humanly possible until she heard a small cry.

‘It's a girl.’ The doctor said, placing the baby on her chest.

‘My baby girl.’ Draco said, emotion strong in his voice.

‘Look at our baby, she's beautiful, just like her father.’ Hermione said, unable to stop the tears as she watched the doctor hand the baby over to the nurse.

‘We must get her cleaned now. Congratulations.’ The nurse said, taking the baby.

‘Thank you, Ron, for being here.’ Hermione said.

Ron smiled and walked out, muttering something about phoning everyone.

‘And you, Mr Malfoy, congratulations on a boy and girl. Dray and Hailey?’ Hermione asked.

‘Perfect.’ Draco whispered, ‘Now go to sleep, you look dead tired.’

---

Hermione opened her eyes to find flowers and cards on her beside table. She smiled at all her best wishers.

Looking to her right, she saw Draco slumped on the couch, eyes closed and snoring. On her left were two clean, sleeping babies. Tears welled up just thinking she had twins.

Hermione coughed and reached her hand out for the water. She hurt too much to move. She groaned, stretching for the water.

‘Here.’ Draco said, waking up to her coughing and handing it to her.

‘Thanks.’ Hermione smiled and drank it, watching Draco.

Draco went over to the babies and rocked the cot, staring at them. He had a bit of sleep in his eyes which he rubbed off.

‘She has my eyes,’ Draco stated, ‘Hailey is beautiful just like her mother, the slightly pointed out chin and long nose. She's adorable and you did such a great job.’

Draco leaned down and kissed Hermione, who kissed him right back.

‘And Dray?’ She asked.

An expression passed Draco's face but he spoke nonetheless.

‘His eyes are darker than mine... like my 'father’s'. He has your hair.’ Draco said, sitting down on the bed next to her.

‘Thank you for being here with me,’ Hermione said quietly, squeezing his hand.

‘I love you,’ Draco told her, ‘well done. You did a great job.’
