Gauri woke up with unbearable pain in her abdomen. She woke up Omkara with tears in her Eyes asking him to take her to a hospital; she wasn't feeling well at all. Omkara was scared to death and carried her to his car while he drove like a maniac. Gauri cried in pain; afraid of what could happen to her sweet baby. She couldn't survive another miscarriage, losing her child the first time was traumatic enough.
Why God is that always happening with me, she thought Please not the miscarriage again. I couldn't bear that loss again. Please God! She tried hard to control her sobs and she knew Omkara too was scared. For him it was the first Time to fear that she could lose the baby for real. For Her it was like living the same nightmare again. Gauri remembered her first miscarriage and how she felt the moment the car hit her. She felt the blood running down her legs but she couldn't move because she was in shock. How could live be so cruel to her she had thought that day; lying on the floor only semi-conscious. She was lost in thoughts while feeling all the pain.
Omkara looked at his tiny little wife and saw her holding her abdomen in pain, he could clearly see how disturbed and lost in thoughts she was and he caressed her face telling her everything would be alright. He was with her, so there was no need to be afraid. She kissed his hands and soon they reached the hospital.
"Please help me my wife. She is pregnant and has a lot of pain!" Omkara screamed and a few nurses took Gauri inside to examine her.
He was pacing the hallways impatiently. Why did the examinations did take so long if Gauri and their child was alright? What if something was wrong with the baby? Or did she maybe have labor pain? She was only in her 6th month but he heard of preterm birth. What if that is happening to Gauri and their Baby? What if they were in danger and he wasn't by her side?
After dying a thousand of death the doctor came out and asked for Omkara.
"Are you Mr. Oberoi?"
"Yes, please tell me are my wife and the baby fine?"
"The Baby and your Wife are completely fine. It was a false alarm since your Wife didn't take care of her diet chart. I prescribed her medication and she needs to take them daily. Also you have to keep her away from any sort of stress, We don't want her to have a miscarriage again right?" He smiled politely at Omkara while signing a few documents that a nurse handed to him. Omkara looked at him in astonishment. What was he talking about? This was Gauri's first Pregnancy!
"What Miscarriage? What are you talking about? This is her first pregnancy!" Omkara said; confused. The Doctor must be mistaken, Gauri could never hide such a thing from him, could she?
"No Mr. Oberoi. I think if I remember right only 10 Months ago I confirmed Gauri's Pregnancy. She left the hospital trying to call you but then she met with an accident causing her to lose the child. She was hit by a car driving by. Poor girl she had lost so much blood and the inner injuries spoke against another pregnancy. There was actually no chance for her to conceive normally but I think God must really favor this petite little girl." He told Omkara who was in utter shock! Why didn't Gauri tell him about her miscarriage? Didn't he deserve to know what they lost?
"Thank you Doctor. Can I see her now?" Omkara asked with a trembling voice. He was confused and needed to talk to her. How could she hide something like that from him? He was hurt but he could only imagine the pain she went through-alone.
" Sure. Just be careful. Her mental state is a little bit instable since she relived the trauma of possibly losing her child again. In a while I will check on her again. We need to keep her here under observation to make sure, she is really fine again." The Doctor smiled and left to look at his other patients. Leaving Omkara alone with his thoughts. The Moment he left Omkara remembered the Day Gauri met with the accident.- He was busy in a presentation when she tried calling him up. His phone was on silent and he didn't realize that she was struggling to keep their baby alive. After 2 hours he finally had the time to call her only to find out she was hospitalized, because she was injured. He had rushed there immediately and hugged her tight after asking for the room she was admitted in.
She was constantly crying in his arms and kept whispering that she was so sorry for losing something. He hadn't understood her well and the nurses told him she was under the influence of anesthetics.
Time and Time again he asked why she was sorry after all it wasn't her fault that this bloody idiot of a driver had hit her with his car and left her there bleeding.
He remembered the conversation they had on the drive home:
"Gauri, are you alright? Do you want to go back to the hospital and stay there a little while more?" he had asked her and caressed her hands. She shrugged his hands away and kept crying. Surprising him, Gauri never shoved his hands away ever.
"Gauri?" he again whispered her Name softly causing her to look at him.
Her face had bruises and he knew she must have been in pain. The doctor had told him about the inner injuries and that he needed to be careful and to try to make her forget what happened else she could get depressive. He was a bit confused as how a normal accident could cause depression. Maybe that should have told him that something was off.
"Om...?" She looked at him with tears in her eyes. She was hurt, deeply and he hadn't had a clue why. He wished he could take away all the pain.
"Yes meri Jaan?" He caressed her face and kissed her bruises.
"Will you make me forget this day? Please...I don't want to live that day again and again in my memories. Please." She began crying vigorously and he had hugged her ensuring her he would do that.
" Of course. You will never every remember that day dearest. I will make sure of it."
After that both went inside their room and slept.
A lone tear fell on his cheeks and he thought about the pain his wife must have gone through after losing their child, the child she conceived the first night they loved each other. But he had seen her medical reports; none of them stated a miscarriage he thought sadly. Maybe she didn't want him to find out; she wanted to bear the pain all alone. But not today he would make her forget all the pain but he needed her confession as why she didn't tell him about her miscarriage. He hadn't known him but he knew he and Gauri would have loved their child unconditionally. Just imagining that they could already have had a baby made his heart grow. Stopping in front of Gauri's Room he took a deep breath gathering his thoughts.
Omkara entered the room and saw Gauri sleeping peacefully. The only sound came from a machine which showed the heartbeat of their baby. He sat beside her and caressed her face, she looked so beautiful and hearing his baby's heartbeat calmed him down. Caressing her face, he began thinking: Should he just tell her that he knew her darkest secret? The reason why she wasn't as happy as him after finding out about her pregnancy? Now he knew the reason because she already lived these first emotions the pride, the happiness and the love. It wasn't something new for her. It was just a reminder of the loss she had suffered earlier. Of course each pregnancy was special in its own way but he could understand that after that trauma it would be hard to celebrate again without any fear.
" I promise you Gauri." He whispered more to himself " I will make you forget all your pain. I will give you the happiness of the whole world just to see you smile."
He kissed her softly and she woke up. She looked at him with tears visible in her eyes. He saw the pain she wasn't ready to share with him.
"Omkara...Om...What happened? Is the baby alright? Please tell me the baby is alright? Is our Baby fine?" She looked at her abdomen and the machine. She relaxed after hearing her baby's heartbeat. It was all he needed to survive at this moment
.
"I-I-I am so sorry. You told me to eat on Time, to take care of myself and not to work too much but I didn't listen. And I almost paid for it...again." Gauri began to become hysterical and Om had to grab her by her Shoulders to shut her up. Her doe like eyes looked into his and she instantly calmed down. His finger gently drove over her upper lip and he kissed her nose. She closed her eyes and sighed; relaxing in his embrace.
"It wasn't your fault Honey, like it wasn't the first time. Gauri the first Time you met with an accident... How can that be your fault? The second Time you worked so much because you wanted to help me out in work or please my mother. It was never your fault.
"What are you talking about?" She looked at him in Shock. How did he find out about my miscarriage? Gauri thought.
"I am talking about your first pregnancy and your miscarriage. Don't lie and say that this is not true." He felt her stiffen and tried to read her face. She tried hiding her tears but failed.
"How do you know? I hid it so well, no one knew. I even told the doctor not to mention it in my medical reports...I didn't want you to feel the pain. The pain that I felt. "
"Well your doctor told me. He said I need to take extra care of you from now on. But I want to hear it from you. Tell me."
Gauri knew she had to share the pain with him. She buried that burden with her since that awful day and she had no one to take care of her and her emotions. She remembered that it took her very long to forget what happened and just to hope that God will give her the good news again. Of course she was afraid after the doctor told her she maybe wouldn't be able to conceive again but she left all hope to God. And God did give her the good news again; she caressed her abdomen with love.
It was Time for her to tell him everything- and she did she left no stone unturned.
"It was a few weeks after our first Night. I felt weak and vomited thrice a day so I thought to get a checkup done. First I thought it was the flu but then I realized I hadn't had my period so the doubts of being pregnant stroke my mind. After a few tests the doctor confirmed my doubts and I was overwhelmed, after all it was the child I conceived the first Night you and I met as husband and wife. How could I not be happy? I tried calling you...but your phone was unreachable. I just had left the Hospital and tried to cross a street when the car hit me. " She stopped and closed her eyes. She relived each of the emotions once again and he held her Hand to make her understand he was there with her.
"And Then?" he wanted her to finish, to get free of the burden.
"Then I was brought in again. I had several serious injuries and lost a much of blood. I felt the blood running down my thighs and I knew I had lost the tiny life inside of me. After I woke up the doctor told me there could be complications to get pregnant again since the miscarriage and the accident injured my uterus and I cried for hours I think. I felt like Life was playing a bad prank on me. I tried calling you time and time again but you were busy." She smiled at him sadly and began to cry vigorously.
Omkara hugged her and kissed her forehead. "Share your Pain. I am here with you."
And she did. Gauri shared all her pain with him. It felt good not to bear the pain and the burden alone anymore. She pulled him on the bed and he sat next to her; hugging her and giving her the comfort she needed the most. She didn't need nice words just his presence was enough, just knowing that he supported and loved her helped in healing the wounds of the past. She missed the baby she never got to meet but she promised herself that this baby would see the world!
"When can we go home?" She asked and wiped away his tears, He had tried to hide them but why should he? He too had the right to be sad and to show his pain and he did because he knew his beautiful and strong wife wouldn't mind it. She would console him and would be there for him forgetting her own pain. He used to be embarrassed of tears but ever since he met Gauri he knew only real man were strong and manly enough to cry; to show their weakness.
"The doctor said normally in a few hours but he wants to keep you under observation. Just to be sure you are really ok."
She nodded in agreement and cuddled closer to him. Finally she felt free again, not anymore caged by her pain and her guilt. All these month she blamed herself but Omkara managed to make her understand it was not her fault but fate.
"I Love you. Thank you for your Love."
"I love you too. Do you want me to leave you alone? Or should I stay the night?" He didn't had to ask again of course she wanted him to stay. So he did stay.
"Stay. I can't sleep without you next to me, remember?" She giggled and he smiled at her. She was truly a child-woman; innocent and sweet.
The nurse tried to tell him to leave since Gauri was a patient and needed rest but was stopped by the doctor. He looked at the young couple with a loving glaze. He remembered his own wife and their relationship.
"Let them. They need each other company right now." He smiled and left the two love birds sleep peacefully in the hospital bed.
"Mr. Oberoi! You have to wake up."
Omkara slowly opened his eyes to the unfamiliar voice and was confused for a moment. But then he remembered last night's incidents and got up with a jolt. He looked at Gauri still sleeping next to him and then at the blushing nurse in front of him. Immediately he stood up leaving a protesting but sleeping Gauri behind who slowly opened her eyes and saw her Husband rearranging his clothes. Then her gaze fell on the nurse who studied her husband's feature way to long.
"Excuse me are you here to look at my husband or should you look after me?" Gauri said in a bittersweet voice and the nurse blushed even harder. She checked herpulse and the Baby's Heartbeat. Gauri closed her eyes while Om kept controlling if the nurse was doing her job right. After all he was paying the bills and would even give some donation if the doctor and his nurses would prove to be worthy of it.
"Everything seems alright. The Heartbeat sounds strong too. Your Baby is healthy and strong. A real Fighter. Doctor Rati will soon visit you and then he will sign your discharge papers." She left the room to bring her some breakfast according to her pregnancy diet. Omkara sat beside her and waited for the food to come.
"Eat! I will drive you home and then will go to office. If I could I would stay home with you but I have an important meeting, sorry meri Jaan."
Gauri smiled and began to eat." Don't worry. Maaji will be there , Kavya and Bhavya too. I won't be alone."
Both were enjoying the breakfast until Gauri felt a soft kick inside her. Her eyes widened and tears collected in her eyes.
That was the first time she felt her baby's Kick. That Moment was so precious and would never be the same. It was the first Time she felt her baby move. Her baby was alive and healthy.
"OM!" She screamed his Name and pushed the food away to caress her abdomen.
Instantly her longhaired Hippie got worried and looked around for any nurses but she held his arm and put his hands on her abdomen.
"What is it? Are you having any Pain?" He asked. She just shook her Head till he felt something soft kicking against his Hand. He looked at her with Pride.
"The Baby is kicking! Our Baby's first kick." Both smiled at each other and lived that moment in complete silence.
He kissed her forehead and thanked her a thousand time for this precious gift. He had given her himself and in return she gave him the fruit of their Love. A mix of both of them something which belonged to him. His blood. His Baby.
Doctor Rati came in and checked Gauri for a last time.
"So you are now in your 6Th Month Mrs.Oberoi. I suggest comfortable clothes like salwar suit and long Walks since your Body is a bit too weak to be this far in your pregnancy. And take your medicines on time else we will see you again in a few days." He laughed silently.
"Thank you Doctor Rati, thank you for everything. I don't know what we would have done without you." Omkara said and hugged the doctor out of sheer happiness. He again laughed and allowed them to leave
They drove back home a lot happier and were welcomed by their worried family.
