Chapter 15

She chugged down the large glass of water while everyone patiently waited for her to elaborate on who she thought the hacker was.

"Spit it out, Mind! Who is it?" Lexi raised her brows.

She let out a loud Ahh after setting the empty glass down and wiped her mouth with her sleeve. "Guys. So, you know how Tristan Thompson cheated on Khloe Kardashian a couple of years ago?"

"Is this relevant, Mindy?"

"It totally is, Mr. Scott! Just bear with me," she said while nodding her head. "So, the scandal was that some documents leaked showing Tristan had fathered another child while he was with Khloe!"

"Oh, that's just awful! Poor Khloe!" Scarlett said with a look of concern.

"I think Khloe's fine now. I mean there are rumors that they're back together, but I don't like to keep up with all of that." Mindy tossed her hair back.

Lexi snorted and Mindy continued. "So, anyways when that story broke, I was feeling the same exact way you were feeling Mrs. Scott. I felt so bad for Khloe, and it really made me so sad to see her so sad. It always stuck with me."

"Alright, Mindy, we're on the edge of our seats here. Tell us who you think it is," Lexi said with a shake of her head.

"It's Charlotte! The hacker is Charlotte!" Mindy blurted out.

Lexi's eyes grew wide. "What? As in, Charlotte the Ms. Perfect who we hang out with it at the dorms, Charlotte? That Charlotte?"

"Yes! That Charlotte! Okay, I still love her and she's still our friend, but I'm convinced she's the hacker!"

"Mindy, that's a huge accusation to make. You're saying that this young woman is holding ransom private files for millions of dollars? That's a criminal offense warranting jail time!" Jason took his glasses off again and set them down. Everyone else was frozen in place seemingly trying to comprehend how it could be Charlotte.

"Yes! Isn't it exciting we have our first prime suspect?"

Cole chuckled. "Mindy, you're nuts."

"Mind, but how does this relate to the Kardashians? And more importantly, why do you think the hacker is Charlotte? What proof do you have?" Lexi furrowed her brows, and for the first time wondered if Mindy had truly lost it.

"Oh! Right, back to my story. So, like I was saying, their breakup really impacted me. I was so upset with Tristan that I researched everything about him to assess whether he had any redeemable qualities. Anyways, I stumbled upon an article that talked about his tattoos and the meaning they each had." Mindy smiled as if everyone would know exactly where she was going with this.

"And?" Lexi looked up and then back to Mindy.

"So, last night I saw that Charlotte had a tattoo on the back of her neck when she put her hair up."

"Oh, I wouldn't think Charlotte would be the type to have tattoos. She seems so prim and proper," Lexi said.

"I know, I thought the same thing! But anyways, the tattoo was a short straight line and I remembered the article on Tristan and it sparked me to ask Charlotte what her tattoo meant."

The group burst out laughing forcing Mindy to stammer. "Wait! I'm not done with the story yet!"

"Mindy! You could've just started with, 'Charlotte had a tattoo and I asked her about it', instead of going through the Kardashian back story. Girl, you seriously need to work on your reveal skills," Lexi said.

Mindy giggled and glanced towards Cole who seemed to be amused by the whole thing. Weird, he would've totally roasted her by now. He must still be drunk.

"Oopsies. Sorry, okay you were right earlier Mr. Scott. I guess it didn't really have any relevance. My hangover is not doing me any favors."

Jason chuckled. "You're forgiven, Mindy. Please go on. We're invested now."

"Okay, so when I asked Charlotte what her tattoo meant, she said that it represented a dash on her keyboard!" Mindy excitedly got up from her seat and drew a dash in the air with her finger. "She said that it meant her code was never finished. She would always be learning and there would always be additional characters required!" She quickly sat back down. "Ow, my head! I shouldn't have stood up that fast."

The group stayed silent for a moment, likely processing her words just as Lexi was doing. "Are you sure she said Dash?" Lexi asked and bit her bottom lip. Charlotte? Could Charlotte be Dash?

"I'm like," she paused in thought before continuing, "ninety-five percent sure. I mean she mayyy have said Hyphen but I'm pretty sure it was Dash."

"How about Underscore?" Cole smirked at her.

"Here, take this and draw it for us. The tattoo," Scarlett said as she handed a small white receipt to Mindy along with a pen.

Mindy drew a short horizontal line, and everyone hunched over her staring at it for a moment. It was as if Mindy painted an abstract masterpiece, and they were all gearing up to write an essay on it for a homework assignment.

"Well, to be honest, this feels like our best lead yet," Jason said.

"Good job, Mindy!" Lexi put her arm around her best friend and gave a tight side hug. "I mean, it doesn't explain how Charlotte could have been at the computer labs if she was at the party but might be worth a shot to look into! Who knows, maybe she got in remotely somehow."

"Good job, Mindy. We're glad to have you on the team," Jason said before putting a hand on his chin. "Alright, so here's the plan. Charlotte is our new prime suspect. That doesn't mean we stop investigating or snooping around with other people. It just means that we need to start digging a little deeper into everything there is to know about Charlotte." He set his hand down and turned to Lexi. "Lex, I know you typically run background checks, but let's leave that to Cole, your mother, and me this time around. You and Mindy need to get to know this girl more."

"Sounds good," Lexi said. "Mindy, what do you say we do a girls' night sleepover with Charlotte and a couple of people?"

"Yes! That's brilliant! Good thinking."

"Then it's settled. Now, let's see if we got our hacker."

The rest of Sunday was spent catching up on homework and planning for a girls' night in on Monday. The girls decided to invite a couple of Charlotte's friends in addition to Charlotte. Thankfully, they all happily accepted the invite.

"You girls definitely know how to throw a party! Last night was epic!" Charlotte had said when the girls were at her door. "I even managed to help someone with code they said they were stuck on for ages!"

Lexi nervously laughed and glanced at Mindy who seemed to do a better job at keeping her composure. "Of course, girl! We're glad you made it! Anyways see you in class," Lexi said while giving two thumbs up. Mindy glanced back at Lexi and by the look in her eyes, Lexi knew she gave a little too much oomph in the theatrics.

The night had gone by quickly and before Lexi knew it, she was getting ready for her Monday morning class with Tom. It would be warm out today, so she opted for a loose light blue sundress with yellow flowers that she bought just before school had started. She wasn't used to wearing so much color, but this particular blue seemed to resonate with her. It may or may not have had anything to do with the fact that it matched the color of Tom's eyes.

"Mindy, get up. We still need to get breakfast. We're going to be late for class," Lexi said as she glanced over at Mindy who was still in bed, scrolling through her phone.

"Oh shoot! I didn't even realize the time. I was assessing the height differences between the Jonas brothers and their wives." She sat up and rubbed her eyes. "You may have to get breakfast without me. I'm not going to be ready in time."

Lexi huffed a laugh through her nostrils. "Alright, just text me what you want, and I'll meet you in class." Lexi finished up her natural makeup look and made her way out of the dorm. The weather was indeed warm yet there was a strong breeze that forced her to hold on to her bag a little tighter. Like every other day on the campus, people were on the move, swiftly moving purposefully like a colony of traveling ants.

Just as Lexi was about to reach the coffee shop, she saw Tom seated at one of the benches facing the door. His face was pointed toward the phone in his hand, and he held a to-go cup for hot coffee in the other. Her heart skipped a beat taking him in. He had on a smooth gray button-down and dark blue pants. She slowed down her pace, hoping he'd sense her presence and look up from his phone.

As if she spoke the thought aloud, he glanced up, and Lexi could've sworn he did a quick double-take. When his eyes met hers again, a genuine smile formed on his face, causing her insides to turn to mush. How is it possible he always looks so good? She returned his smile but didn't say anything. Instead, she opted for a small wave. He set his phone down and lifted the cup in his hand to cheers her through the air.

Lexi wondered if she should go up to him but decided to stick to her plan. If she wanted to make his class on time, she knew she had better put her and Mindy's breakfast order in. She turned toward the door of the coffee shop and just as she was about to open it, a gust of wind threw her dress up, fully exposing her butt and backside. She let out a yelp and instinctively smacked her hands over the fabric of her dress, pulling it down on parts that met the warm air.

"Christ," Tom muttered loud enough for the sound to reach her ears. Heat flooded her cheeks and she quickly turned back to Tom who was staring wide-eyed at the ground. She held on to the back of her dress that had just decided to showcase her black thong to everyone in the vicinity and began laughing. Oh my God, thank God I didn't wear the beige granny panties today.

As soon as Tom glanced back up, he dropped his cup and steaming liquid poured out all over his thighs. "Ahh!" He jumped up and winced, pulling at his pants to lift the fabric from his skin.

Lexi gasped and ran over. "Tom, are you okay?"

"Ahh, ow, ouch!" Tom continued to tug at the fabric of his pants. He sucked in a breath through clenched teeth.

"Oh my goodness, we need to get cool water on your legs! Come, follow me!" Lexi motioned for him to follow her into the coffee shop.

He shook each of his legs while holding up the front of his pants before letting out a grunt. "Shit, this is painful." He winced again and after a moment, he grabbed his things and followed after Lexi.
