TWO. a potential goodbye
SHILOH WAS a mess. She didn't realize how nervous she'd be to speak in front of the school body about the potential break up or growth of her club and she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown in the club room.
"Shiloh." Evie Fernandez, the CO-Creator of the club called, "You knew this was coming, you even told me you practiced what you were going to say. Why are you freaking out all of a sudden?"
"Why aren't you freaking out!?" Ashley Yang, another Love Club member called, "This is potentially the biggest decision Shiloh has to make in her entire life and none of you are looking at the potential downfall of the club we've built together when we were babies."
Shiloh furrowed her brows, "Thank you for the insight, Ashley." She turned, "I'm just overwhelmed. Yes, we picked five new members, but what if it doesn't work out? What if they shut us down regardless of what happens? What if—"
"What if" Evie smiled, resting they're hands on Shiloh's shoulders, "things work out exactly how they should?"
"Besides, if Principal Gutierrez shut us down, he'd be blasted on TMZ or something." Jenna Russet, another member of the club said, "Gosh that wasn't nice."
Jenna was the nicest out of the club, close with Ashley, but her nerves shined the most. Jenna happened to be at the school just as early as Shiloh because she had to prep for the pep rally seeing as she was a cheerleader for East.
"Look, I'm fine. I'm so fine." Shiloh scoffed, pushing her glasses up, "All I have to do is say what I have memorized and give the attention to the special guest."
"Did you ever find out who that was?" Madison Gregg, the final member of the club asked, "I heard it was Victoria Justice filming the VicTORIous spinoff."
"Highly doubt it's her, but to answer your question, no, I don't know who it is." Shilohs answered.
The girl sat down at the round table in the club room and adjusted her skirt as she done so. She only had a few more minutes before she had to be out there and ready to give this entire spiel to the student body.
The four others stood behind her as she looked down at the mini Love Club list they had made before turning their backs towards the girl.
"Have you guys heard anything about Ricky?" Jenna asked.
"I haven't seen him post anything since the documentary dropped." Evie whispered, "Not even on Twitter."
"Maybe they actually broke up?" Ashley questioned, "Like, for real this time."
"But for what?" Madison asked, "There was nothing in that documentary other than Dylan that could've wrecked their relationship."
"You watched the documentary?" Jenna asked.
"Duh. I had to see what they said about everyone. I wasn't going to be the center of attention and not know what it was for." Madison answered.
Evie rolled their eyes, "Look, what matters is what's happening right now and right now, it seems that Ricky and Shiloh are done. So we support our friend first and he comes to the club we respect him as a person who needs help."
"And after?" Ashley asked.
"After?" Evie questioned, "I hit him where it hurts."
The group had been too distracted by themselves to notice that Shiloh had stood, staring that them for a minute as her friends muttered nonsense to each other.
But, the reason she stood was to answer the door and see Dylan Lapids, Shiloh's ex-boyfriend on the other side.
He convinced his dad to transfer him back to East High for his senior year... for many reasons and he could say that he was elated to be back.
He'd proven that he wasn't the same old Dylan from before and though he and Shiloh were exes, they got along enough to consider themselves friends.
"Hey." Shiloh smiled, "What's up?"
"Can't I see what you've done with the place?" He asked.
Shiloh sighed, "Sorry, Lapids. We're never opened on the first day. Not even for sightseers. Come back tomorrow and I'm sure you find your wildest dreams come true."
"Funny, Sim, truly, but I'm actually here to talk to Evie."
Shiloh furrowed her brows, "For what?"
"For... none ya business, Molina, that's why." He answered, "Now, are they in here or not?"
Shiloh turned, her brows still furrowed and called out to Evie.
The group of four turned dramatically and smiled over at the girl.
"Yea?" Evie smiled.
"It's for you."
Evie took small steps forward until they saw Dylan on the other side and pushed Dylan out the door and stepped out with him.
"What's up with that?" Shiloh asked.
"No idea." Jenna said, fixing her high ponytail, "But they said what was shown in the documentary wasn't true and they were only trying to figure out how to diffuse it."
By "it" Jenna meant the rumors of Evie and Dylan being a thing. The entire documentary, well, most of the documentary, was full of lies and Evie made sure that everything that was seen with them and Dylan was 100% false.
Shiloh only nodded, pulling her phone out of her cardigans pocket. She held a tight lip and shoved it back inside.
"Jenna and I gotta go, but we'll see you guys after."
Shiloh picked her backpack up from the ground and pulled Jenna along side with her as they made their way towards the football field where the pep rally would be taking place.
"Remember, deep breaths and I'm right there with you." Shiloh said, holding Jenna's hands.
"I know." She smiled, looking towards the filling crowd, "It's just... cheer isn't something I always talk about, you know? I don't even think our friends outside the club know."
"Jenna." Shiloh smiled, "You'll be fine."
"You're right. You're always right." Jenna took a deep breath, "You'll be fine, you know. In and out."
"In and out." Shiloh repeated and let go of Jenna's hands as she ran off with the other cheerleaders.
Once the crowd was settled, Principal Gutierrez stepped on the small stage, waiting until the crowd was silent to speak.
"Good morning. Good morning." Gutierrez spoke into the mic, "All right, listen up. Listen up, everybody, settle down. It's hard to believe it's the start of another year here at East High."
"Let's go, seniors!" Ricky shouted from the crowd. Others cheering along with him.
"This year, we have several special announcements. Somethin' that's gonna impact all of us that are still here at East." Principal Gutierrez continued, "First up, I welcome you, Shiloh Molina."
Shiloh smiled as she stepped through the curtains and stood in Principal Gutierrez's place as the crowd cheered for her, some more than others.
"Um, hello, everyone." She smiled, "If you don't know, I'm Shiloh Molina and I, along with Evie Fernandez, Jenna Russet, Ashley Yang, and Madison Gregg, run the Love Club here at East. With all that being said, it's our senior year, our final year at East and our potential... last year with the Love Club."
Victoria, who sat with the others in the drama department sat upright. They had no idea where this was going and the only people who did know weren't saying anything until they gathered with them later.
"We have picked five freshman to take our places if I chose to continue the club without my supervision, but if push comes to shove... I will close the Love Club as I graduate." Shiloh sighed, "But, it's only the beginning of the year and you still have all of us to help you out. We officially open our doors to anyone starting tomorrow and I can't wait to start and end this year with all of you." She smiled, "Oh! And to the person who slid the note under our door asking if we'd follow you on Instagram, our answer is no."
She turned towards Principal Gutierrez who stepped forward and whispered something in her ear.
"And in lighter news." She repeated, "We have our special guest... the OG Coach Bolton."
With that, Bart Johnson, the "OG Coach Bolton" stepped out from the curtain and waved towards the cheering crowd.
He gave Shiloh a small side hug as she stepped off the stage.
She made her way towards the bleachers, seeing the theater department looking at her as she shuffled through the crowd and sat down next to Evie who had warned them not to bombard the girl with questions until they were alone.
"My name's Bart Johnson but many of you know me as Coach Bolton from the High School Musical franchise." He introduced, "Folks, we're gettin' the whole gang back together to make High School Musical 4: The Reunion a movie that's gonna shoot right here in East High. Please join me in welcoming the new stars of the franchise. You know him from his hit canceled sitcom. Mark and Spark and you know her from her viral TikTok videos that have taken American and parts of Latin America by storm, it's America's favorite couple, it's Mack and Dani."
The couple stepped through the curtain as the crowd erupted into cheers.
Mack tapped on the microphone as the crowd died down, "I guess I should say something. For seven years, I grew up in front of a lot of you on Mark and Spark where my talking dog Spark taught me valuable lessons from friendship to food. And, yes, I am talking about episode 617, where Spark taught me to cook spaghetti—"
"Al dente!" Gina Porter shouted from the stands.
"I see someone has watched every episode. I appreciate that." Mack smiled, "And in my role on this new movie I will play the co-captain of both East High's basketball team and the drama club. Is it woke? Is it throwback? What if it's both? What if it's High School Musical 4? Well, guess what? It is."
Dani smiled, kissing Mack's cheek and stepping towards the microphone, "Thank you for your kind words, baby. I am so honored to be here and to be making my acting debut in the franchise that launched so many careers, and also Bart Johnson's."
"She seems like a kiss ass." Evie muttered towards Shiloh, "Something about her vibe is throwing me off."
"You don't even know her." Shiloh muttered back, "She could be nice."
"Are we talking Jenna nice or nice enough to gently stab you in the back to feel the pain before driving it all the way in?" Evie asked.
"She's not even our problem." Shiloh said, "She's here for the movie and it. There's nothing to worry about."
The two of them cut their conversation down as Dani began to sing High School Musical from the third movie to prove that she could actually sing for the people who people that believe that she couldn't.
Ashley looked behind her as Evie and Shiloh looked down at her.
Ashley smiled, "Shes really good."
"Okay, Demi." Evie smiled.
"What does that mean?" Ashley asked.
Shiloh only rested her hand on Ashley's shoulder causing the girl to give her a soft smile before turning around.
With all of that out of the way, the pep rally was over and filming and set up for the movie started instantly.
The Love Club had beaten the drama department to the bomb shelter as they had to climb threw a window and some shrubbery.
"How'd you get here before us?" Miss. Jenn asked.
Shiloh turned, holding her "crew" pass in her hands that each other the members had.
"We're consider the "chemistry crew" and if anyone on that set isn't showing any we're there." Shiloh answered.
Miss. Jenn stepped forward as the rest of the drama department their seats. She gently pressed her hand against Shiloh's back. She was going to give her and the club the time to explain everything they needed to about the future of their club.
Shiloh sighed, "I know you guys may have a lot of questions about the club and I am down to answer whatever questions you may have."
Several hands shot into the air and Shiloh's eyes danced between various people.
"Gina?"
"So... that's it? It's over? Your club."
"As of right now, no." She answered, "Like I said, we picked five freshman that we think are compatible with the club and our values and we'll be meeting with them after school today to figure some things out." She smiled, "Ashlyn?"
"Maddox sent me a text about you and Ricky breaking up. Apparently it's was on E News—"
"What's the question Ashlyn?" Shiloh asked.
"Are you?"
Shiloh licked her lips and sighed, "Please put your hands down if your questions relate to my relationship."
With that, several hands went down and Shiloh nodded, pointing towards Carlos Rodriguez who's hand was still in the air.
"Can you squeeze me in tomorrow in the morning... like six?"
"Not six, but definitely tomorrow." She smiled, "I wish I could make this club last forever, but this is the real world and I have decisions to make, but they don't have to be made now. We may be a little busy with this movie, but we will always make time for any of you. Um, that's all I'm going to say about the club for now because I'm sure Miss. Jenn wants to share more about our this semester."
The members of the club took their seats on the metal risers. Shiloh sitting in front of Ricky who sat on the top riser.
Miss. Jenn smiled towards them, "I'm sure the Love Club will also be in attendance for whenever we need them also." She smiled, "But was asked to bring you all back here, so hopefully whatever this is won't take too long."
Soon, the back door opened and Corbin Bleu stepped out with a bright smile on his face.
"Mr. Bleu?" Carlos astonishingly called.
"All right, look, you guys, I'm gonna make this quick."
"Is your helicopter waiting?" Ricky, possibly joking asked.
Corbin only chuckled, "You're funny. It's a private jet." He corrected, "I am aware that the Frozen documentary turned out differently than any of us expected."
"Seb isn't talking to me."
"Big Red is in Cairo for six months."
"My mom's first husband disappeared under mysterious circumstances." Emmy said.
The group only looked down at her before Corbin cleared his throat.
His eyes followed Shiloh, the news that she and Ricky had broken up over the documentary had been more widespread than she or Ricky had known.
"Me?" She questioned, "I gained 70,000 followers on Instagram from it and more Love Club traction. I would say I'm pretty solid."
Her answer didn't seem to raise eyebrows from either herself and Ricky, but for the others? They were shocked, had the couple really broken up? Did they have no bad blood? Was the break up so bad they weren't talking to each other or acknowledging the other's presence?
If only they knew.
"I hear you." Corbin spoke, "And I think I found a way to make it up to you."
"I finally have enough money saved up to hire lawyers." Evie said, "I know the law. So if this is another documentary crew, I'm going to tell Marshall Law that you're in violation of your restraining order."
A restraining order that they did not have but would get if push came to shove.
"No. No, no, no." Corbin reassured. "It's something way better. Allow me to invite some friends to explain. Lucas? Mo?" He called.
And soon enough, Lucas Grabeel and Monique Coleman stepped out causing the group to cheer and Miss. Jenn to sit in shock.
"So, we want the fourth movie to feel authentic" Monique explained, "a little bit more grounded, and absolutely accessible to new generations."
"So, what's the plot of this movie, you ask?" Lucas smiled.
Jenna raised her hand, "No asked that yet, but if you gave us a second longer I'm sure someone would've."
"Okay." Corbin nodded, "It's is our 15-year high school reunion. My character, Chad, is married to Taylor. Martha is a world-class choreographer. Troy and Gabriella are in couples' therapy. Ryan is happily partnered."
"With twins on the way." Lucas added.
"And the future of the East High Drama Department is on the line." Monique finished.
"So it's a horror film?" Miss. Jenn asked.
The three of them laughed and Corbin waved his hand, "No, not at all, Jessica."
He continued, "The real hook of this movie is that Miss Darbus is retiring. So, the next generation of theater kids is absolutely freaking out."
"So, it's a comedy?" Ashlyn Caswell asked.
Her question would be ignored as Lucas clasped his hands together, "We need you to be featured extras."
"Front and center in every scene with Miss. Darbus." Corbin said.
"I mean, what better way to cast a drama class than with real drama students?" Monique asked.
"Wait, is Alyson Reed in this movie?" Ashlyn asked.
"Um, who?" Victoria asked.
"Cassie in the A Chorus Line movie." She answered, "The original Miss. Darbus, you guys."
"Alyson is in, 100%." Corbin answered, "She still has her original costumes."
"And her wigs." Monique added.
"Those were wigs?" Madison asked, "And you still couldn't get a proper hairstylist? Shame."
Kourtney and Monique quickly agree before Kourtney raised her hand.
"Um, excuse me. If we're going for authenticity here, then I think that Mack and Dani should consult us." Kourtney said, "The real-life kids at East High."
"I love the integrity of that." Corbin said.
"Yeah, great." Lucas smiled, "You can cover Dani. Any volunteers to show Mack around?"
Jenna quickly turned pointing towards Shiloh, "She'll do it."
"What? Why me?"
"Because you have nothing to do for the rest of the day." She smiled, "Until the end of the day."
Shiloh quickly glanced over at Ricky, "I can't. I'm... so busy."
"I'm sure we can handle it." Evie said.
Shiloh nodded, "Thank you, Evie."
"Perfect." Monique smiled, "Shiloh, you are on Mack."
"Well," Ricky spoke suddenly, "this is fun."
Corbin chuckled, "Right? Rehearsals start this week. Prepare for you entire lives to change. This time, for the better."
Ashley held her phone out, "I got that on recording, so if I experience a horrific time, I'm contacting Evie's lawyers."
So, now Shiloh had the Love Club, her senior year, college, the possibility of doing the musical, and being an extra, scratch that, a featured extra in a movie.
She could so handle that.
