THREE. miss. jenn meet the love club
SHILOH STOOD at her locker digging through everything she needed for the Love Club that afternoon. She had finally gotten in touch with Mr. Mazzara and with some extra pushing (that she didn't need to do because he had already promised to help her) he brought the chairs and set up the hotline like she had kindly as him the first time around.
She (to the best of her ability) set up the club and waited to set up the rest with the other members.
She held the bag of decorations in her hands and quickly shut her locker.
What she hadn't expected was EJ standing on the other side of it.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Well, I just shut my locker. Now, I'm going to head to the Love Club."
"I mean with Ricky."
She sighed, "He asked for help. So, we're helping him."
"By helping him get back with his ex?"
"Legally, in our Love Club handbook, we're not allowed to disclose why we're helping anyone in the club. So, assume all you want?"
She brushed past him and made her way to the club. EJ still following behind.
"Look, I know we ended on bad terms, but my relationship with Nini is important to me and—"
"I keep my personal life out of the Love Club." Shiloh said, "I don't care about our old relationship. You broke up with me and that's the end of the story. Why Ricky is in the Love Club is our business and not yours. So, you worry about your relationship and I'll worry about my business."
EJ watched as Shiloh held a tighter grip on the bag than what she had originally. She was angry. Truthfully, what the Love Club knew stayed within the Love Club. If someone came in and said anything, it would stay within the Love Club.
People came to them knowing they would tell anyone anything unless it was deeply necessary.
"Shiloh!"
She quickly turned around and saw Ricky standing with Evie close by.
"Are you coming to rehearsals?" He asked.
"I'm not a part of the musical. Why would I be there?"
"Ricky's gonna sneak us all in." Evie smiled.
"I mean, I have to finish decorating the Love Club, but I'm sure everyone else is down to go."
"Hey, are you okay?" Evie asked, "Did Dylan speak to you?"
"Who's Dylan?" Ricky asked.
"No, surprisingly not. EJ stopped by my locker."
Evie furrowed their brows, "And?"
Shiloh sighed, glancing between Evie and Ricky, "Nothing serious. Look, I'll sit with everyone in rehearsals, but I really do have to go and decorate the club."
"Well, we should go now." Ricky said, "Miss. Jenn seems to be very serious about this musical stuff. Plus, this gives everyone a chance to see what I can do on my own."
"Lead the way." Shiloh smiled.
Shiloh quickly grabbed Ricky's forearm and pulled him back.
"What are you wearing?"
"Oh?" He chuckled, "Throb. Nini loves Throb."
"Are you sure? No one likes Throb. It's like douchebag central."
"Really? I thought I smelled pretty good, plus Nini always complimented me when I wore it."
"That's just sympathy, bud." Evie smiled.
"Never wear Throb again and that's coming from me, not Love Club Shiloh."
Ricky sighed, quickly turning around and leading the two of them to the bomb shelter. Waiting for them, Ashley, Jenna, and Madison.
"You guys couldn't be any slower." Madison sighed, "Everyone is inside already."
Ricky peaked inside and saw that no one was really focused on the entryway or the hiding spot he had found earlier.
"Look, just follow my lead."
Ricky slowly crept his way inside leading the five of them into the hiding spot.
"You can see me from straight across the room. Plus it's a good earshot from me, so you can hear everything I'm saying."
"Look, we can't be here long. We almost got caught yesterday. So, well observe and you'll meet us in the Love Club after rehearsals so we can talk." Shiloh said.
Ricky nodded and headed towards Big Red.
"This is such a tight space." Jenna whispered.
"Relax, it could be worse." Ashley said.
Evie drew her attention away from those two and on towards Shiloh who had pulled her phone out to scroll through her camera roll.
"What did EJ really want?"
"Asked me why I was with Ricky yesterday."
"Can't believe he pulled a Dylan move on you."
"It's whatever." Shiloh sighed, "Just wanted to know what we were doing with Ricky and... his relationship with Nini."
"He did that?" Jenna asked.
Shiloh glanced around her friends. They all wanted this relationship between her and EJ to work because it was different than her relationship with Dylan, but here she was scrolling through her camera roll deleting pictures the two had taken during their talking stage.
"He really likes Nini and cares for her. Which makes helping Ricky a little hard."
"We know you adore the Love Club, but honestly we'd do anything to see EJ suffer." Madison said, "You really liked him."
"Exactly I liked him. It's in the past. Right now, it's about Ricky."
"Shiloh..."
"Don't forget to silence your phones!" Miss. Jenn said.
"They're starting. Meaning we are now focused on how Ricky handles anything that may come his way in an environment like this." Shiloh whispered.
Each of them carefully peaked up from behind the fairly large and wrapped object.
Miss. Jenn had asked everyone to take each other's hand.
The group watched as Ricky held a small smile on his face as Nini was basically forced to take his hand. On the flip side, he also was forced to take hands with EJ as well.
"This is super awkward." Ashley whispered.
"We'll talk to him about it." Shiloh replied.
"He's staring at her." Jenna smiled.
"She's not staring at him." Evie sighed.
They watched as Nini's eyes stayed locked with EJ's. Ricky shaking his head and looking past Ashlyn and over at the club.
"What do I do?" He mouthed.
"Nothing." Shiloh mouthed back, "Relax."
Nini quickly let go of Ricky's hand and as she did so he let go of EJ's. The sounds of Miss. Jenn holding the longest note of We're All In This Together broke the bond.
"She's so over him." Madison said.
"I don't know." Shiloh started, "Maybe... she still feels something."
"We can't force her to fall for him again." Jenna said.
"Who are you telling, Jenna?" Shiloh questioned, "We're not forcing a breakup. We just want Nini to see the good in Ricky and whether or not she breaks up with EJ is on her own accord."
"Okay, let's take five." Miss. Jenn sighed.
The circle disbanded and Ricky dragged Big Red towards the club he had hidden.
"Act natural." He muttered under his breath.
"What are you talking about?"
Ricky pointed behind the hidden object and towards the floor.
Red stood from his spot and saw the Love Club smiling up at him.
"You didn't."
"They're a helpful group."
"And remember if we helped you have to give us a five star review." Evie smiled.
"What happened to our Troy and Gabriella?" Miss. Jenn asked, "Where are the sparks from the audition?"
"Should we think about re-casting?" Carlos asked.
"Absolutely not." Miss. Jenn answered, "My instincts are impeccable. And I'm not scared of a challenge."
"This one might be impossible. She won't even look at him. Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"The people that we caught in the auditorium during auditions yesterday. They're the Love Club and they've had plenty of successful relationships come out of that club. They know everything about love, it's kinda scary."
"Get in contact with the club. I have an idea. Okay, people, we're back."
THE LOVE Club stood before Miss. Jenn and Carlos in the auditorium.
Apparently, they had all gotten an e-mail from her asking them to meet after she had caught them all at auditions.
"Do you know why I called you all here today?" She asked.
"No, in fact, your e-mail was very vague." Shiloh answered.
"Look, if we're in any sort of trouble for some sort of trespassing, we are absolutely, one hundred percent sorry." Jenna apologized.
"We didn't trespass. We were here after school for our club hours. We had every right to be there." Evie said.
"Look, Miss. Jenn, we came here super early for you when we were supposed to be doing things for our club. So, I'm not rushing you, but why are we here?" Shiloh asked.
"Your club." Miss. Jenn smiled, "The Love Club. Can I get an introduction?"
"Um, I'm Shiloh Molina and I'm the creator of the Love Club. Evie Fernandez, co-creator, Ashley Yang, Jenna Russet, and Madison Gregg."
"Nice to officially meet everyone." Miss. Jenn smiled, "As you know, I'm Miss. Jenn and this is Carlos. Now, about this Love Club, how does it work?"
"We just help people? Platonically or romantically?" Shiloh answered.
"Or helping them love themselves." Ashley added.
Shiloh wasn't unsure of what her club did. She had been doing it for years, but she was unsure of what Miss. Jenn was trying to pull.
"Miss. Jenn, like Shiloh said, we do have our own club to attend to, so, is there any real reason why you asked us to be here?" Evie asked.
"Is there any reason why you guys were spying on our auditions?"
"I'm very interested in the musical." Jenna answered, "That's why we were there."
The four of them glanced over at Jenna before facing Miss. Jenn again, a very fake smile on their faces.
"Okay, Love Club. As you may know, our leads aren't sparking like I would like them to." Miss. Jenn started, "And because you're the Love Club I knew I could count on your help. With your apparent high success and zero failures and I can assure myself that I can rely on you all."
"I wouldn't say zero failures. That's a little too much praise. What exactly do you need help with Miss. Jenn?" Shiloh asked.
"I want to add a kiss to the end of the musical between Troy and Gabriella."
"What exactly does this have to do with the Love Club?" Madison asked.
"We're not show-runners." Ashley added, "We're love enthusiasts if you will."
"Love enthusiasts?" Evie questioned.
"I mean, it sounds way better than saying people who know about love, plus it's way shorter." Ashley argued.
"What we mean Miss. Jenn is, this is your musical do what you want." Shiloh said, "This really has nothing to do with us or our club."
"But it does."
"Okay..." Shiloh trailed, "Can you explain?"
"I want to add this scene, but my leads are not sparking let alone speaking. I need the Love Club to come to rehearsals and teach love to them but in a very incognito way."
"We can't really do this in an incognito way because everyone knows we're the Love Club." Jenna said.
"One minute." Miss. Jenn smiled and turned her chair around to speak to Carlos.
Shiloh sighed. Miss. Jenn was very adamant about getting the Love Club to help her light some spark between Ricky and Nini, a task they had already been working on, on their own.
"Miss. Jenn?" Shiloh called.
She, along with Carlos slowly turned their chairs around and looked up at Shiloh.
"As a club, we do things together. If you want our help, you have to let us have free rein. We can't be incognito, but we can involve everyone in the musical. We can hopefully form some type of friend group between everyone and leads to at least speak to each other." Shiloh said.
She felt Evie tug on her arm, "Are you sure about this?"
"Everyone deserves a chance... even if it's Miss. Jenn." She muttered.
"Fine. As long as you guys can get my two leads sparking that's all that matters."
"Now, we're not miracle workers. We cannot guarantee our advice will be followed, but remember if we helped you have to give us a five star review." Shiloh smiled, "Deal?"
She stuck her hand out waiting for Miss. Jenn to shake it.
"You really are a businesswoman, aren't you?"
"I'm a person who cares."
Miss. Jenn held a small smile, taking Shiloh's within her own, and shook it gently.
"Can't wait to work with you all."
"Feelings mutual." Shiloh smiled.
Now, Shiloh and the Love Club had ten times more work on their plate, but they could handle it. They were the Love Club after all.
SHILOH STOOD on a chair in the Love Club. She was finally able to get everything she and her friends wanted for the club and was finally able to finish decorating with or without them.
She heard a sudden knock on the door and jumped down from her chair to answer it.
Ricky Bowen stood on the other side with a wide smile on his face.
"What are you doing here?" Shiloh asked, "It's lunch."
"Why aren't you at lunch? I was looking for everyone and you were the only one not there." Ricky said, "I brought you a banana."
Shiloh smiled, taking the banana and allowing Ricky inside the club room.
"Oh wow."
The club room had looked completely different than what Ricky remembered. He was just here yesterday and it was completely different.
"Yeah, we're almost done decorating."
"That's what you've been doing for the past couple of days?"
"It keeps me busy and away from—"
Shiloh quickly shut her mouth and unpeeled her banana. Hoping Ricky wasn't paying too much mind to what she was saying.
He turned away from his awe and faced her. Her mouth now full of banana mush.
"Away from who?"
Shiloh held a tight-lip as she swallowed her banana.
"This guy I use to date." She answered, "He very adamant about us getting back together I guess."
"Did he ever get his second chance?"
"He got plenty of chances, but sometimes those chances are taken for granted. So, decorating the Love Club and avoiding him has been very peaceful."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. Nothing to apologize for. Besides if it's wasn't for him the Love Club wouldn't be a thing, so you should thanking him." She smiled.
She tossed the banana peeling into the trash can and grabbed one of the crates off of the floor and onto a nearby table.
"What? No one else has ever broken your heart before him?"
"Not before but, after maybe."
"Shiloh—"
"I'm not that sensitive Ricky. I just tend to keep my personal life outside the club, so it's just kinda weird to talk about it here."
"Well, it's just us. Doesn't have to be Love Club related."
Shiloh turned and faced him, resting her hands against the table.
"EJ. I dated EJ for two weeks... then he went to camp and meet Nini."
"Really?" Ricky questioned, "Shiloh if I knew I would have never—"
"We would've helped you regardless." She cut off, "Like I said, my personal life and my Love Club life are two different things. Don't worry about it. Besides, it was two weeks."
"Still. You guys dated."
"You're right and now weren't not. Some people aren't meant to be." Shiloh sighed, "Is there a reason you stopped by?"
Ricky furrowed his brows. He had been there to tell her about what he, Nini, and, Miss. Jenn had talked about that morning, but it quickly slipped his mind as he grew more and more into conversation with her.
"Oh!" Ricky smiled, "I talked to Miss. Jenn this morning and she added a Troy and Gabriella kiss at the end of the musical."
"That's great, but I knew that."
"You knew?"
"Miss. Jenn wants the Love Club to help push that kiss forward, so we volunteered. Pretty sure she was going to somehow force us into doing it anyway."
"That's great! How are you gonna make it happen?"
"Slow your roll. We have to help the whole cast, not just you and Nini. We, as a club, will figure it out."
"Fine, don't tell me."
"I wasn't plannin' on it." She smiled, "You can come back by this afternoon to help me carry this crate to the bomb shelter."
"You're starting today?"
"The Love Club hasn't helped this many people at the same time before, so I worked on some stuff that should help. Hopefully, it does."
Ricky hadn't seen anyone as passionate for a club ever (not including Miss. Jenn or Mr. Mazzara), she always seemed to want to help in any way she could. Maybe that's why her motto was, "Everyone deserves a chance." and "If we help you have to give us a five star review."
"This afternoon?"
Shiloh looked up from the stack of papers in her hands.
"If you can."
Ricky nodded, "See you this afternoon."
She waved a small goodbye to Ricky as he shut the door to the club behind him.
He quickly returned to the room, only popping his head inside, "I promise I'll come back and decorate."
Shiloh smiled, "Yeah, you're clearly taller than me, so I'll be waiting for you."
Talking to Shiloh as herself and not as the leader of the Love Club was definitely different. A good different.
Ricky could only hope he could speak to that Shiloh again soon.
