FOURTEEN. one step forward, three steps back
THE RIDE to Ashlyn was fine. Jenna did hit the curb, but it was fine overall.
Shiloh tried to exit the vehicle but the door soon was locked.
"Was the door not locked the whole ride here?" She asked.
Jenna turned and faced her. Shiloh sat in the back with Madison and Evie.
"Whoops." Jenna smiled.
Shiloh sighed, "Why is no one getting out?"
"You know Ricky is going to be in there." Ashley said.
"Yes, he was the one who told me about this. I'll be fine."
"You haven't spoken to him in days." Evie said, "You've barely spoken to us."
"That's because I was in denial."
"You're still in denial." Madison muttered.
"Whatever, okay. I'm going to have to talk to him eventually, right?" Shiloh questioned, "I'm going to be fine."
She pulled on the door's lock and allowed herself out of the car. Jenna sighed, completely cutting the car off. Each of them following behind Shiloh.
Shiloh saw the front door slightly ajar and walked inside. She pushed the door completely open and allowed her friends to follow suit.
Inside; Nini stood on top of the steps, Ricky and Gina standing close by, and the Love Club all gathered behind Shiloh.
Shiloh smiled softly, "Hey, everyone. Happy Thanksgiving... turkey cupcakes."
"Gluten-free." Gina smiled.
"Oh, wow." Ashley smiled, grabbing a cupcake from Gina's tin.
"We heard Carlos brought a High School Musical game?" Madison questioned.
"Uh, yeah." Ricky said.
Shiloh looked over at Evie and sighed. It was awkward, but she didn't know if she caused it or if it was already in the air.
"Well, we should go and speak to everyone." Shiloh said, "We'll see you guys in there."
"Hey, Shiloh! Can I actually talk to you?" Nini asked.
She paused before turning and facing her. She nodded slowly and Nini didn't hesitate to grab ahold of her wrist and pulling her around the corner.
"Is the Love Club opened?"
Shiloh raised her eyebrows slightly. She never denied a person of help, but it was unexpected because she had no clue what Nini could be asking for. Then again, she felt like she knew.
Shiloh nodded, "Always."
"This is going to sound so dumb, but do you have inside jokes with your friends or like, Ricky even?"
Shiloh cocked her head and furrowed her brows. She didn't think she had many inside jokes with anyone. She probably did but couldn't think of any at the moment. As for Ricky, other than the "you're too pretty to cry" and the fist bumps they did... they didn't have many jokes.
"No, I don't think so."
Nini nodded, "See, it was stupid."
"No, it's not. You asked for a reason." Shiloh reassured, "Do you want to tell me why you asked?"
"I just... I don't know."
"You don't have to tell me anything. Especially since we're not really alone."
"It's not that. I just don't know how to word it or explain how I feel."
"About?"
"Ricky. I thought we were kind of getting back into the swing of things, but I don't know."
Shiloh sighed, "The best advice I can give you is to talk to him. It doesn't have to be now, but soon."
It was easy for Shiloh to give out advice but hard for her to follow. It seems easy enough to hear what people say to do, but when it comes to yourself, you just can't seem to push yourself and do it.
"Yeah, totally. Thanks, Shiloh." Nini smiled, "I'll have that review by the end of the night."
"Don't worry about it right now. Tonight is about having a good time. Just give it to me whenever school starts back."
Nini nodded and stepped away from Shiloh.
"You coming?"
"Yeah." Shiloh smiled, "Just have to text my brother and let him know I made it safe."
Shiloh turned her attention back onto her phone before catching Nini's attention.
She definitely wasn't texting her brother, but staring at her reflection on the blank screen.
What Ricky wanted was working in his favor. That was the whole point of him coming to the club. Shiloh wasn't going to stop that. If Nini was falling for Ricky again then his folder could be closed. Then it would be easier to separate herself from him, right?
Shiloh shoved her phone back into her pocket a joined the others around the coffee table in Ashlyn's living room.
"There are four basic categories. The Getcha Head in the Frame Trivia Challenge, the Bop Till You Drop Dance Challenge, Sync to the Status Quo Lip Sync Challenge, and Looking for Glee, which I thought would be a fun name for the singing challenge because I was obsessed with the show." Carlos explained.
"Hey, it still holds up." EJ smiled.
"Oh. Good. I thought you guys were gonna judge me." He smiled, "Guess the Love Club has been working."
Shiloh held a small smile as she felt Evie bump her shoulder.
What Carlos said was true. Not about the Glee thing, but about the Love Club. It had seemed that everyone was getting along just fine. It took along to get from point A to point B but they were there and they couldn't be more thankful.
"Okay, so Knights, you won the coin toss, so you guys get to pick the first challenge."
The team (Ricky, Gina, Shiloh, Evie, Big Red, and Ashlyn) had decided to start with Looking for Glee.
The game continued and soon enough it was EJ's turn; choosing Bop Till You Drop, each team member had to choose a person to face the other.
Wildcats choosing EJ and the Knights choosing Ricky.
The chatter died down as the both of them stood and Carlos read out the card in his hand.
The game soon went into a break and EJ had asked to speak to Shiloh alone in the kitchen.
"You and Ricky did great out there... you know, not killing each other and all." She joked.
"Learned from the best you can say." He smiled.
"Yeah, well, Jenna has her ways."
"Well, I meant you."
Shiloh shrugged her shoulders, "I didn't really do anything. I kind of observed everything. Make things try and go as smooth as possible."
"I get that."
"Is there something you wanted to talk about?" She asked, "Evie's going to death glare you before you get any words out."
"I've been on this apologizing and speaking the truth thing. So, I just wanted to say sorry for what happened at Homecoming."
Shiloh nodded, "Only Homecoming?"
"Uh, yeah." He answered, "I know I said some harsh things that night and you didn't deserve that. So, I'm sorry."
"Do you want me to forgive you?"
EJ grew confused, "Ideally? Yes."
"Ideally? I can't do that." Shiloh said, "It wasn't just Homecoming, and if you think it is you need to really think about why you're apologizing to me. Is it because you're doing it for you or are you doing it for me. You don't really know why you're sorry. Figure that out and get back to me."
She grabbed another cupcake from the table for Ashley and left EJ dumbfounded.
THE GAME soon started back up and it ended in a tie and according to Carlos the only way to break a tie was by playing a lighting round of Getcha Head in the Frame trivia questions.
The Knights ended off with a win after EJ admitted to cheating and a ribbon was given to Gina after answering the last question correctly. Over the moon about it, she called her mom to tell her and to ask about spending the night at Ashlyn's.
The moment turned bittersweet as Gina had to step away and have a private conversation with her mother.
Ricky soon stood and headed into the kitchen.
Neither Gina nor Ricky returned to the living room and Nini hopped off of the couch. She wasn't gone long, she returned, grabbing Shiloh's hand, and pulled her towards the exit.
"Can you talk to him?" Nini asked, "I know you two are close. He kind of just snapped at me."
"I don't know if that's—"
"Just to make sure he's okay?"
Shiloh sighed before glancing back at her friends and following Ricky outside.
"Hey." She called, "Everything okay?"
Ricky turned around swiftly, "I really don't need any Love Club advice right now."
"I was asked to see if everything was all right. I mean, you just stormed out of there."
"So, first it's avoiding me at all cost and now people have to ask you to come and talk to me, that great."
"I haven't really been speaking to anyone. It's not just you. I've been trying to figure some stuff out and I— I'm still trying to figure things out."
"Yeah, me too." Ricky sighed, "My mom moved out like two weeks ago and she's already got a new boyfriend. Sound familiar? Think you've been on the other end of the stick."
Shiloh furrowed her brows, "What does this have to do with me? What does it even have to do with you?"
"Because you're still crying over a guy that doesn't care about you. Two guys if I'm not wrong. You call yourself the leader of the Love Club and love really isn't up your alley is it?"
Shiloh bit the inside of her cheek. Of course, she, along with the other members of the club have gotten their fair share of "hate", they had gotten used to it at some point, but they never really had someone they knew or cared about shit on them for having the club or what their strong suits were.
So, Ricky digging into Shiloh hurt a lot more than she would've thought. She couldn't imagine Ricky saying or doing anything to purposely hurt her feelings whatsoever, but here they were.
Ricky looked up when he notice Shiloh hadn't said anything back. She was fiddling with her fingers before letting out a breath, sighing as she did so.
"Shiloh, I didn't mean it."
"No, it's um..." Shiloh sighed, "remember when I said we didn't have to be embarrassed to do anything in front of each other? Well, I take that back because if I cry right I'm going to be super embarrassed."
Crying in front of Ricky wasn't going to be the plan. She wasn't going to do that after what he had said. Shiloh never had the thought that Ricky didn't care about her. She knew he was going through a lot right now but taking it out in her wasn't going to benefit either of them... clearly.
"You told me that I was too pretty to cry. I think I might actually listen to that advice for once. So, I'm going to suck it up. It's going to take a few minutes, but I'm gonna suck it up."
"Shiloh—"
"Goodnight, Ricky."
Shiloh didn't wait for any type of response or quick worded apology from Ricky as she made her way back into Ashlyn's.
She pressed her back against the door with her eyes shut for a moment. Whether or not Ricky's words rang true, she was still hurt regardless. He knew how passionate she had been about this club and how hard she had to fight for it to be where it was today. What really hurt her was that Ricky came for the club and her work ethic the way that he did.
"Shiloh?"
She opened her eyes and saw Evie standing in front of her.
"What's wrong?"
Shiloh quickly held a very fake smile, "Nothing. I think I'm gonna head out for the night."
"Go home by yourself?"
"Yeah, it's no big deal or anything."
Evie furrowed their brows. They knew that Shiloh had been outside with Ricky just now (thanks to Nini). She knew that Shiloh didn't leave the house with her eyes now burning red.
"No, we can just stay at my place. You know it's just my grandma and I. So, we can just stay there." Evie suggested.
Jenna glanced over at her two friends standing by the door and hit Ashley's shoulder.
"What?"
Jenna pointed towards the two and the three others made their way over.
"Shiloh?"
"Can we just go?" She asked, "Or you guys can stay. I don't wanna ruin the night for anyone."
Shiloh was trying her hardest to not let any tears fall and it was evident between the rest of her friends. Crying would prove that Ricky was right in some sense and she wasn't going to let that happen. She knew Ricky cared, but her emotions were getting the best of her. Especially since she just told her friends yesterday that she liked Ricky.
"Milkshakes?" Madison asked.
Shiloh smiled softly and threw her arm over Madison's shoulder, "Milkshakes."
Whatever Shiloh was feeling was valid. She wasn't going to take that away from herself. Her feeling were hurt by someone she cared about and liked. The more she thought about it the more she thought about if there was any truth behind it.
She didn't think she had been so bothered by EJ jabs until Homecoming.... when Ricky caught her crying over him. She didn't think she let Dylan bother her as much as she use to.
As much as Shiloh Molina didn't want to. Here she was, crying over another guy. The only difference was that this one guy really cared, but he probably ruined his chance.
