Episode One ~ Part Four

"I got a bad feelin' in my gut about this," said Hailey from the backseat beside Grace.

They were currently on their way to Sunshine Roadhouse with Mary Jane in the drivers' seat of her Jeep Wrangler JK and Jolene sitting shotgun. Behind them, in Addison's 1993 Ford F-350 xlt, was Addy herself along with Sage.

Isabelle was going to meet them at the bar.

"We should have stayed home."

"Or argued to go to another bar." Mary Jane agreed.

"How 'bout we just tell her?" Grace suggested. "If you guys are too scared, I'll do it."

"With your lack of compassion?" Jolene looked back at her. "How 'bout, no."

"Hey, I'm willin' to take one for the team. I don't understand what's wrong with tellin' her."

"Because it'll break her," replied Hailey. "And she might leave us again."

The car got silent.

Not one had an argument or comeback for that statement. It still hadn't been confirmed whether Addy was going back to California, and at this point, the whole family was on their toes.

They just got their little sister back and would be sad to see her go again.

"Okay, besides that," Grace sighed. "Shouldn't we just give her a heads-up, so if both of them are there, she doesn't look like an idiot?"

Being the oldest and the most overprotective of all her sisters, Jolene looked out of the window, shaking her head in anger. "Why couldn't he just keep his promise? And out of all people, why'd it have to be her, you know?"

"And Addy actually kept herself for him," Mary Jane scoffed. "Just when you think he's different–"

"He turns out to be the same," Jolene, Hailey, and Grace said in unison.

"So, what are we gonna do?" Asked Mary Jane. She, Grace and Hailey turned their gazes to Jolene.

"We just got Addy back. Not to mention we just buried Pop Pop today. I say, let's not ruin this night. We could all use a pick me up. So let's just have a good time and pray he's not there."

"And if he is?" Hailey asked.

Jolene leaned her head back, looking up at the moon that accompanied them on their drive. "Let's hope he's man enough to tell her himself."

Big sis had spoken, so that was the end of it.

For now, at least.

Once they arrived at Sunshine roadhouse, they were lucky to find two parking spots beside each other. The parking lot was so full, it was rare to get good spots on a Saturday night.

The girl's got out of the car, meeting at the trunk of Mary Jane's jeep.

Addison had a huge grin on her face as she touched the back of her pick-up truck.

"What's got you so smiley?" Mary Jane asked her.

"It's been two years since I've driven Tommy," she said in awe. "I missed him so much."

"Oh, god," Jolene rolled her eyes, smiling along with the other girls.

"What?" Addison felt no embarrassment. "You guys don't have names for your cars?"

"No," Mary Jane scoffed while her siblings replied, "Yes."

They all frowned at her.

"You don't have a name for your car?" Sage asked. "That's bull, everyone has a name for their car."

"Everyone, as in weirdos," Mary Jane retorted, making her way towards the bar entrance.

"Shut up," her sisters spat, following her.

They entered the loud bar, which was apparently having a karaoke night.

There was already a too intoxicated girl on stage. She was a pretty brown-skinned girl with braids that went past her shoulders. With a beer in hand, she attempted to keep up with the words to 'Giddy On Up' by Laura Bell Bundy.

The song itself was great, just not when she was singing it. Her slurred words were both off-beat and off-key.

"Aw hell," Jolene shook her head, laughing. "I forgot it was karaoke night."

"Now, this is goin' to be fun." Mary Jane was already moving her hips to the beat of the song.

All the while, Addison looked around at the place, immediately falling in love with it.

Sunshine Roadhouse had everything.

There was a decked-out bar with a fully stocked wall of alcohol behind it, a spacious dance floor, a band stage, a darts section, a pool section, a jukebox, and TVs for watching sports.

The best part was the at-home atmosphere that she missed so much.

That's one thing she loved about Saxondale – even if you weren't family, you were family. There's always a welcoming vibe anywhere you go.

"Oh! There's Isabelle." Sage noticed the curly-haired girl waving them down at a table. "Let's go."

As they headed towards the table, they were greeted by individuals who knew them as none other than the Barrett Sisters.

They received copious amounts of hugs, fist-bumps, cowboy hat tips, and flirtatious smiles.

Even when they didn't know anyone, everyone knew them. Their ranch and father's side of the family were very popular, so it came with the territory.

It had been this way since they were kids, so they were used to it.

Additionally, Saxondale was already a small town, so in a way, everyone already knew each other, whether personally or by association. It wasn't that hard to become popular in a small town.

"Finally!" Isabelle hugged Sage first. "What took you guys so long?"

"We ended up cleaning up for my mother before we left," answered Sage. "Plus, you know my dad. He's gotta know the plan, or he'll come ridin' down these streets with his shotgun in hand lookin' for us."

Isabelle laughed. "I honestly wouldn't be surprised. How about we get some drinks, ladies?" She looked at the other girls who were already taking off their coats and sitting down. "Beers and a round of shots?"

"No shots for me," said Addison. "But I'll take a beer."

"Yeah, me too," the girls agreed.

"I am not in the mood to get burned out." Mary Jane's attention was on the stage.

A man, possibly tipsier than the girl before him, was preparing to sing. It was sure to be entertaining.

"Oh, come on," Isabelle groaned. "I thought we were supposed to have fun tonight. You guys have to at least take one shot."

"But–"

"No, buts, just one," Isabelle interrupted Hailey before she could argue against it.

"Come with me." She took Sage by the hand and pulled her away.

Addison watched with a look of curiosity in her eyes.

"Oh my god!" Mary Jane exclaimed.

The sisters looked at the brunette, who put her finger up. "Listen."

Jolene was the first to realize what Mary Jane was reacting too. She closed her eyes. "Aw no."

"Aw, yes." Addison, Grace, Mary Jane, and Hailey were all giving her cheeky smiles.

The man on stage was going to do Dolly Parton's "Jolene."

Every time the song came on, the sisters couldn't help but sing along loudly and off-key, to their older sibling's dismay.

"Please don't–"

"Jolene! Jolene! Jolene! Joleeeeeeeeene!" They sang obnoxiously. "I'm begging of you, please don't take my man."

Jolene rolled her eyes as Mary Jane grabbed her arm and pulled as if begging in desperation. "Jolene! Jolene! Jolene! Joleeeeeeeeeene! Please don't take him just because you can!"

"Okay, okay, okay, that's enough." Jolene couldn't bear it. "That's enough. Knock it off."

Grace laughed. "As much as daddy denies it, I swear he named you after that song."

Hailey leaned on the table. "He says it was mama's doin' but every time the song comes on, his mustache twitches, and he nods his head to the beat. I think he secretly loves Dolly Parton, more than mama, but he's too macho to admit it."

"Probably." Addison wouldn't be surprised.

"Here you go, ladies." Sage returned with a tray of beers and shots. She set it down in the middle of the table.

"Where's Isabelle?" Addison asked.

"At the bar. We've made some friends, so I'll be back in a minute, okay?"

"I thought we were bondin'," said Jolene.

"Don't worry, the night is still young, I'll be back. And take your shots, they better be gone when I get back." Sage told her siblings before walking off.

Addison watched the brunette join Isabelle, who was currently talking to a group of men at the bar. While she stared, her sisters were taking their beers.

"Hey, guys." She grabbed the last one. "Is it just me or have Sage and Isabelle changed? I mean, Isabelle was a sweetheart, and though Sage has always been a rebellious tomboy, she seems a little more reckless than usual."

The girls all went silent, no one saying anything.

"Come on." Addison knew her sisters were hiding something. "Spill the beans. I want to know. What's up with them?"

"A lot's happened since you've been gone, Addy." Mary Jane took a sip of her beer.

Addison leaned on the table, all ears.

As most of the time, since she was the oldest, Jolene started the conversation. "Okay, for starters, Isabelle's parents got divorced last year. Turns out, she and her mom weren't the only family her father had."

"No way." Addison was in shock. "You're kiddin'. Get the hell out of here."

"It's true." Mary Jane nodded. "Poor Isabelle hasn't been the same since."

Addison gulped down some of her beer to help take in the new information. No wonder Isabelle was different. Something like that would change anyone.

"Okay, and Sage?" Addison asked after a moment.

"Sage hasn't been the same since Brandon left her," Grace answered.

"It was that bad, huh?"

"Bad?" Hailey scoffed. "Addy, how would you feel if you give someone four years of your life, just for them to leave you for some other woman in a completely different state."

"Bad obviously," Addison shrugged.

"I feel a but comin' on," said Mary Jane.

"I don't know, I just feel like maybe she should be a little bit over it now. I don't really understand the point of cryin' over someone who's not even thinkin' about her. He's livin' in another state with another woman. He doesn't deserve her tears. I'm not sayin' she should be datin' but . . . I don't know. She's Sage, she bounces back, but this - this seems abnormal."

"Hey, we're not arguin' with you," Jolene ran her fingers through her hair. "But everyone heals differently. I'm sure whatever she's goin' through will pass."

"Well, it needs to hurry up," Grace rolled her eyes. "Because party girl Sage is going to end up gettin' herself in trouble and her partner in crime isn't helpin' either." She referred to Isabelle.

"Gracie!" Mary Jane scolded her.

"I'm just sayin'. Are we going to ignore the fact that they're always drinkin', always going out? You can't tell me you're not a little worried."

"They're just trying to cope," said Hailey. "But I don't think it'll go that far." She looked at the rest of the sisters. "Do you?"

Simultaneously, they looked over at the two who were getting ready to take shots with their male companions.

"They won't if we watch them," said Jolene. "Well, look out for them. We shouldn't smother them but at least be aware, especially with Sage."

All the girls nodded in unison.

There was a comfortable silence, the three of them drinking some of their beer.

"Oh!" Addison snapped. "I have another question. When the hell did Sean start hangin' out with Sage? Isn't it a little weird to hang out with your brother's ex-wife?"

"Trust me, we thought the same thing." Gracie started handing out their shots.

"Despite you being right," said Mary Jane. "He's a sweet guy, and you know what, he's been by Sage's side since the divorce. So, in my eyes, he's pretty great."

Addison smirked, a mischievous look in her eyes.

"Don't worry, we think the same thing too." Gracie gestured for them to pick up their shots.

"That would be weird, right?" Addison cocked an eyebrow.

"I try not to think about it," replied Jolene. "Bottoms up, girls."

One by one, they started to down their shot. As soon as Addison followed pursuit, a spotlight flashed on her.

"We've got the leader of Black Rain, our very own Saxondale citizen, Addison Barrett!"

Everyone in the bar began to cheer and clap for the singer, who was caught off-guard by the sudden attention. Luckily, she had plenty of experience by now, so she wasn't as nervous as she was at the beginning of her career.

She smiled, waving at everyone.

Just when she thought that was going to be all - it wasn't.

"Hey, Addison, why don't you come up here and show us what you got?"

Immediately, Addison shook her head, waving her hand, humbly. She wasn't in the state of mind to perform tonight - plus, she felt totally unprepared.

"Aww, come on," someone begged before moving on to start a chant.

"Addison! Addison! Addison! Addison!"

Addison held her hand over her face, blushing. To make matters worse, her sisters joined in. Now she really didn't have a choice. Giving in, Addison stood up.

Before she could walk away, Mary Jane pulled her back and gestured to her shot. "You're not gettin' out of this."

Addison downed her shot with a smirk, which caused everyone in the bar to cheer once again.

They clapped as she made her way on stage and stood in front of the mic.

"Hey, guys!" She laughed with a hint of anxiousness. "I was definitely not expectin' this, but um, I appreciate it."

"Woo! Yeah!" Yelled some drunk guy.

Addison smiled and went on. "Most of you, if not all, probably know that my sisters and I," She gestured to their table, "Just buried my grandfather earlier today."

A few people replied, "Aww."

"If you think I'm here with a sob story, trust me, I'm not. My granddaddy would roll in his grave if I got up here and cried," she laughed. "Even though you couldn't tell, he was a happy man, and he was always lookin' at the brighter side of every situation. Plus, Pop-Pop Barrett loved a good time. So, let's do this."

Everyone clapped, ready to hear her sing.

"Alright, ladies, I need you to clap for me like this."

She started clapping the song's beat, and it didn't take long for the girls to get it.

"Perfect, you got it. Now, fellas, I need you to stomp for me like this."

They copied her, and she nodded.

Putting her hands on the mic, she began to sing, "Nothin' like a good beat to get your body rockin'."

People made their way to the dance floor, starting to dance.

"It enters your veins and goes right to your hips. All your worries start to fade as the music starts to whisk you away."

A guy came up to the stage, holding his hand out to Addison.

She took it and hopped off the stage. "Don't fight the beat of the music, just let it consume you."

Moving her hips, she danced with the guy. "Leave your worries at the door and let your thoughts fade away. Ain't got time to carry the world on our shoulders. Grab somebody, pull them close, and dance like it's your last night on earth."

While Addison sang, her sisters watched from the table in complete awe. They had seen her on TV and in YouTube videos, but seeing her in person was even better.

She looked so carefree and entirely in her element.

"Come on." Mary Jane stood up. "Let's go dance."

Her sisters didn't argue. They all got up and made their way to the dance floor.

The same guy Addison was dancing with put her back on stage by the hips. She put the mic back on the stand, making her voice soft and low. "Ain't got time to carry the world on our shoulders."

"Leave your worries at the door!" Her high note sent everyone reeling.

"And let your thoughts fade away. Ain't got time to carry the world on our shoulders. Grab somebody, pull them close, and dance like it's your last night on earth."

She ended the song with the slap of her knee, and everyone went wild. She smiled and bowed.

Her dance partner helped her off the stage again, and she gave him a fist bump.

After pushing through the crowd, her sisters manage to reach and hug her.

"That was amazin'!" Exclaimed Hailey.

"Stop it." Addison was trying to hold back her blush.

"Honestly, it almost takes you off the hook for not contactin' us for so long." Gracie made her laugh.

Her sisters all wore proud smiles until they noticed someone coming up behind her.

"What's wrong?" Addison asked.

She froze when she felt a pair of lips close to her ears. "Can I have your autograph?"

Addison whipped around and looked up at the handsome tattooed man she had been looking forward to seeing since she got in town.

Her lips curved into a wide grin. "Jax."
