Superheroes don't exist.
Logan was sitting in the emergency room with his father pacing quietly, he looked down at the light blue tie he got given to wear that day, getting out his notebook reading everything he had noted down, "dad?" he looked at his father who was muttering things under his breath.
"Yes, star?" his dad looked at him giving the 6-year-old his undivided attention, "what's that?" the man points to the notebook, Logan gives it to his father and his eyes widen reading everything he had written "Logan... did you write a timeline from how your mothers' health declined?" Logan nods looking at his feet almost ashamed.
There was a rush of feet as he heard his father go to the front desk, Logan gets his comic out of his bag and reads hearing his father talk to the nurse.
"Logan? do you want to see your mom? she's out of surgery" he looks up to see his father kneeling down to be at eye level with the smaller. Logan nods closing the comic and getting off his seat.
there were a heart monitor and many things attached to her as she was sleeping. Her pale face shone in the dark causing Logan to realise how Ill his mother was.
"Mom? Dad... what's wrong with mom?" His father sighs looking at his sick wife, there was a pain in his eyes, seeing his childhood friend in such pain.
"Your mom is not going to be very well for a while Logan" he takes his son to the board on the end of the bed and read the notes
Diagnosis coronary heart disease, Atherosclerosis.
Symptoms include-
Nausea
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
History of atherosclerosis and heart disease in the family.
Far too advanced to do surgery, 97% euthanize or make her comfortable till it's time.
Logan listened quietly to his dad reading these symptoms and everything else Logan had written in his little notebook "dad what does euthanise mean?" His dad took a shaky breath moving to put the clipboard back.
"Euthanise means we would be allowing the doctors to give her a quick and painless death, instead of suffering from an incurable disease, we would be saving her from being bedridden for however long she would remain being here with us" Logan looked at the comic in his hand while listening, "could a superhero save mom? that's what they are here for"
His dad smiles a small chuckle from his lips. "Logan, I wish it were that easy, but it's too late for your mom. The superheroes are too late to save her this time" a tear slipped down his father's face, Logan reached up and wiped it away silently looking at his father breaking in front of him.
~
"Logan this is the right thing to do" the six-year-old nods seeing his sleeping mother, she had been awake for a bit and had agreed to do this and had begged for them to do it, she held Logans hand as the doctor quietly put the needle in and put the drug into her system, the machine measuring her heart rate had slowed and Logan felt her hand go colder and colder. slowly the machine was doing one noise.
A flat line.
If Logan didn't listen to the monitor he would believe she was sleeping, but he knew better. she's not sleeping, not anymore.
Logan looked at the comics he had brought to read to his mom and looked away. sadness and disappointment in his eyes, he knew better than to hope a hero would save them from this pain. hearing his dad sob heavily in pain and loss. He hesitantly let go of his mom's hand and goes to comfort his broken father.
superheroes don't exist and his moms gone.
