Chapter one
The room was completely dark when Jason jolted awake. He sat up, hand rummaging for the light switch that was by his bed but to no avail. He turned around, peering through the darkness to find that he wasn't in his bedroom. Jason stood up, stumbling across the room and to the window, seeing nothing except the void of space littered with bright glowing stars. Where in the world, well more like galaxy, was he?
Suddenly the ship hummed to life, the lights turning on around him. "Greetings Captain Jason." a clear robotic female voice greeted him.
Jason froze, startled by the voice. He swung around to look around the room, yup it definitely wasn't the one he fell asleep in. He did have to admit that it was nice though. He glanced up at the ceiling. "Um.. hello?" He called "Captain...?" He murmured to himself.
"Did you sleep well, Captain?" the voice asked.
"I guess?" Jason responded. He had actually slept pretty well, the fact that he was in a different bed was what weirded him out.
"Your emotional wavelength tells me you are confused. What can I do to help you, Captain?" She asked politely.
"Where... am I?" He asked. "This isn't the same place I fell asleep in." He was a bit taken aback from the voice's ability to read his emotions.
"You are aboard the Starship Universe." She replied. She didn't explain why he wasn't where he fell asleep.
"Starship?" Jason paused, looking back at the stars outside. "Am I in.. space?"
"Yes, Captain."
Jason took off his cap and ran his hand through his hair, realizing for the first time that he was still dressed in his clothes and not in pajamas. Millions of questions began to race through his head, many which couldn't be answered.
"Captain, you appear to be distressed. I suggest a couple of breathing exercises and I can play some soothing music."
Jason thought about that advice for a second before looking up at the ceiling. "Maybe later but first.. how did I get here?"
"What do you mean Captain? You have been traveling on this starship for about a year now." she answered.
"What? I was in my room just last night..." Jason's voice trailed off. Was he dreaming? He pinched a small part of his cheek, nope definitely not. He turned around and went back to the bed, flopping onto his back and looking up at the ceiling. "Um... who are you? My conscious or something?"
The voice laughed. It sounded musical. "No, Captain. I am STELLA. The ships AI system." she answered.
A small smile began to appear on Jason's face. At least he wasn't alone in a sense. "So Stella, if I've been here for a while why can I ever remember being here?"
"I do not know, Captain. I can run some scans if you wish to see if you are being affected by something."
"Sure." Jason shrugged, still lying on the bed.
There was a silence before a musical note pinged. "Scan complete. You seem to be in perfect health, Captain. Perhaps you have memory loss? Did you hit your head or anything of the sort recently?"
"I don't think so...." Jason frowned. "Maybe I did... I don't know." He covered his face with his hands.
"Perhaps it is the effects of suspended animation sleep system. We have been travelling for a long time and you just now really woke up. You had been in and out for a while though."
"I guess..." he sighed. At this point it was just best to believe everything that the ship told him. He stood up and looked around the room, noticing a large iron door at the end
"You sound upset, Captain." Stella informed him. "Did I upset you?"
"No of course not! I'm just a little confused that's all."
"Understandable. You have been in hibernation for a year."
"Yeah..." Jason went over to the door and pushed a button. The large iron blocks were pulled away by pistons, revealing a long, dark hallway.
"Would you like me to turn on the lights, Captain?"
Jason nodded, temporarily forgetting that he was just talking to a voice. "Um, yeah sure."
The lights flickered and hummed to life, lighting up the hallway. "Are you hungry, Captain?"
Jason thought for a moment, just now realizing that it must have been a year since he's eaten. "Yeah, I could probably eat and entire cow to be honest." He paused. "Can you just call me Jason?"
"Of course. The kitchen is down the hall to the left, Captain Jason."
Jason followed the instructions down to the kitchen. "Just Jason is fine... Captain is a bit too formal."
She hesitated before replying. "Alright C-Jason." She caught herself and corrected it.
He smiled, pressing another button that led to the kitchen. This time the lights turned on by themselves.
Stella monitored Jason as he ate, standing by if he needed anything.
After eating Jason stood up, he was so hungry that he hadn't noticed that what he was eating was just normal beef and not specially designed for space. He felt the star on his choker realizing that it felt... different. "Stella? Where's my spacesuit?"
"Where it always is, Jason."
"No it isn't, the device isn't there anymore..."
"It is in the room just before the airlock."
"Okay..." Headed to the room, entering another hallway that lead downstairs. The lights turned on as he descended into a large circular room full of control panels, a large cylindrical pod in the middle.
There in the pod was his spacesuit.
He stared at it for a second, realizing that this suit was brand new. It was clean of scratches, many of which were the results of parkour fails, and the jetpack looked brand new. He look the suit down and looked in to the helmet, which was shinier than ever before.
"Are you alright, Jason?" Stella asked.
"Yeah... My suit is just... new!" Jason replied, he look off his hoodie, a bit too excited to try it on. He paused. "You can't see me... right?"
Stella went silent. "Turning cameras off now." she informed him.
Jason quickly changed into the suit, every part of it being a perfect fit down to the black bodysuit. He marveled at himself in the mirror, looking just like he did back in his heyday. "Looks great, right Stella?"
"I do not know. I cannot see it."
"Oh..." Jason's voice faded. "You can turn your cameras back on." He chuckled.
"It seems to fit you nicely, Jason." She complimented.
"Thanks." He smiled. "Can I go outside? I've never been in space before."
Stella seemed to hesitate. "I am sorry Captain, but I cannot let you outside."
"W-why not?" Jason frowned.
"The conditions are unsafe for you."
"How so?" Jason began to look around at the monitors, hoping that they would tell him something.
"The cosmic radiation is unstable."
He sighed, taking off his helmet and setting it back on the stand, already having a case of helmet hair. "When will I be able to go out?"
"I will keep monitoring it but I am uncertain."
"So doesn't that mean I have to take the suit off?" His frown kept growing.
"You can wear it if it pleases you, Captain."
"Okay." Jason kept on the suit, grabbing the helmet and putting in under his arm. "So Stella... What now?"
"Well, I can show you some constellations if you like Captain." She offered.
Over the next couple of months, Stella tried to do her best to keep Jason entertained, but had yet to let him go outside.
