Chapter 23

The next morning, light filtered through the trees and found its way into the cave, shining softly against the boys who were still all cuddled together, fast asleep.

Quentin was the first to wake up. Jason was still halfway on his lap and Stampy was leaning on his side, making him unable to move. He stayed where he was, his hand still rubbing Jason's back.

Stampy stirred awake next when the light shone on him and he stretched and noticed Quentin was up but Jason was still asleep. He gave a small smile.

Quentin rolled his eyes and smirked, his free arm giving Stampy a small shove.

Stampy just grinned a bit more, trying to keep quiet. "You better let him sleep...." he whispered.

Quentin chuckled. "Oh I'm planning on it..."

Stella soon hummed awake and detected Jason was still asleep. "Good morning." She greeted quietly.

"Good morning..." Quentin whispered.

"Has he woken up at all?" She asked.

"Nope, he's knocked out cold."

She sighed softly at that. "Well.... He does need the rest..."

"It's for the best..." Quentin paused, "What happened to him?"

Stella hesitated. "I'm not sure if I should be the one to tell you. But I'm also unsure if he would be able to tell you himself... Or even clearly remembers it right now..."

"He'd probably break down again..."

"Probably..." She agreed. "It was... Rather traumatic."

Quentin sighed. "I'm just glad he's alive..."

"As am I... I wasn't sure if I could use the suit like that. I'm glad I was."

"I'm glad you were there to help him."

"I thought you did not trust me, have you changed your mind?"

"I used to, I just hadn't met a single thing in here that was willing to help me..."

"Understandable. There are very few who dare try to go against Kala, creation or prisoner." She explained.

"Why'd you do it then?"

"I... I don't know... I just... Needed to protect Jason." She replied after a moment.

Quentin nodded and fell silent, not wanting to push her anymore.

Stella noticed that and silently thanked him. "How is your leg today?"

"Better." He nodded. "I'll probably still need help walking though."

"But do enough to move on if Jason is able?"

"Yeah, we still need to splint it though. I think I'll be able to."

Stampy got up and brought the cloth and sticks over. "Here. We should wait for him to wake up though..."

Quentin nodded. "Thanks."

Jason began to stir awake.

Stampy noticed. "Jase?" He asked softly, unsure if he was really waking or not.

"Mmmm...?" Jason's eyes began to slowly open, his grip on Quentin becoming tighter.

"He is starting to regain his senses. Try to keep him calm. He might still feel some pain." Stella instructed.

Quentin continued to rub Jason's back. It took a while but eventually Jason awoke, looking around the cave.

"Hey..." Stampy greeted, keeping his voice low.

Jason blinked and nodded at Stampy, taking his arm off from around Qurntin's neck to rub his eyes.

Stampy watched him, glancing at Quentin.

"Good morning, Captain. Did you sleep well?" Stella's voice asked.

"Mm...hm." Jason murmured.

Quentin looked back at Stampy.

Stampy frowned a little bit at that but stayed quiet as Stella spoke again.

"Good to hear." She gave a small reluctant sigh. "Jason," She started. "The others were asking about... about what happened. I was not sure if I should tell them without your permission." She informed him, trying to be careful not to upset him too much.

Jason fell silent and stared off into space, trying to remember the events of that night.

Stella hummed softly. "...Captain?"

"Uh..." He looked around the cave. He stared at Quentin and Stampy, trying to see if any thing about them had changed. He put his hands together... well, he tried to before the realization hit him like a ton of bricks. His right hand trailed up to where his left arm used to be, feeling nothing but the cold cave air.

Jason froze.

Stampy tensed, watching him. "Jason, it's okay... take deep breaths," Stampy tried to keep him calm.

Stella would have flinched if she could've but wasn't sure what to say, knowing he was about to panic. "I'm sorry, Captain. Just... Try to stay calm. Focus on us, okay?"

Jason began to shake, his hand gripping onto the collar of Quentin's shirt. The whole night rushed over him and he became dizzy. Quentin continued to pat him on the back. "It's okay.." He repeated in a hushed voice.

Stampy didn't want to coward him but placed a reassuring hand on his leg. "It's okay, Jase. You're safe here with us."

Jason's breath slowed a bit, but the shaking didn't stop. His grip tightened and he buried his face into Quentin's shirt, sobbing.

"I... I'm sorry Captain. I shouldn't have said anything about it..." Stella apologized.

Jason shook his head, trying to indicate to her that it wasn't her fault. He wanted to talk, but he just couldn't find himself able to speak.

Stampy hesitated but laid his head in Jason's lap with his hood down, knowing the last time he was upset, running his hand through his hair had helped.

Stella gave a small sigh. "Are you... Alright, Jason? You aren't speaking..."

"I..." Jason tried to speak, his hand moving down to the scars on his neck from Kala's claws.

"His neck..." Quentin frowned.

Stampy's ears laid back.

Stella sighed. "He really hurt you, didn't he?" She muttered softly.

Jason slowly nodded. He subconsciously moved his hand onto Stampy's head, running his fingers through his hair.

Stampy gave a small purr as he did making Stella laugh a little. "Well, hopefully you throat heals enough for you to talk soon. But do you think we will be able to start moving soon?" She asked him.

Jason nodded again, moving off of Quentin's lap. Quentin stretched out and took the extra sticks, beginning to create a splint for his leg.

Stampy stayed next to Jason, trying to help keep him grounded.

"We should get moving as soon as you are ready, Quentin." Stella advised.

Quentin tightened the cloth and stood up, taking a few steps to see if it worked. He turned to the others and nodded.

Stampy reluctantly stood and offered to help Jason up.

Jason took Stampy's hand and stood up, swaying in place.

"Woah, hey." Stampy quickly tried to steady him. "you okay?"

Jason nodded, rubbing his eyes again.

Stampy helped him to the entrance stopping briefly as the armor sat up and turned to them. "The suit is fully recharged. I should be able to walk alongside you for a while as long as I conserve energy." Stella's voice told him, standing up and coming over to Jason, offering him to lean on her, letting Stampy help Quentin.

Jason leaned on the suit.

Quentin held the walking stick and exited the cave, the faint glow of the beacon was barely visible through the trees. "Looks like we're headed north..."

Stampy nodded. "We ready to go?"

"Yup." Quentin broke the blocks that covered the entrance of the cave.

Stella helped Jason outside and they headed off.
