Chapter 3

Sophie's song (in me opinion) :Warrior, by: Demi Lovato. You guys have to hear it.

Unedited.

The police station was warm, and the chair Sophie sat in was comfortable, and she watched as Rose who was in an office tap away on her computer as she tried to find Nick Loskie.

The police had been nice to her, offering her hot chocolate, water, food, and even a blanket. But she was full, and Myth kept her warmer than any blanket could. They regarded Myth with unsure friendliness, not being sure what he was made them uneasy. Beside her in another chair Kyle sat, with his feet under Myth. He looked around the waiting room.

"So, this Nick Loskie...do you have a good or bad feeling about him?" Kyle asked after a moment. "Good." Sophie answered immediately. "That's good. I guess. Any other names coming to mind?" He asked. Sophie shook her head, for some reason the color of ivory kept appearing. There was something important about that color, it was as if her mind was trying to piece memories back together. Only a flash of a picture burst into her vision before fading away. A black swan gliding across a crystal clear lake, giving out a magestic sound, that pulled at Sophie's heart, it was full of joy and happiness of past memories, sadness of leaving this world, and the nervous restlessness of seeing what was next.

"Swan song." Sophie said. "What?" Kyle asked. "Swan song." Sophie repeated. "Swan song?" Kyle echoed. "I'm not completely sure what that is, but I know we sure don't have swans here."

"But I'm not from here." Sophie frowned. "Say that again?" Kyle asked. Sophie didn't have to read his mind to know what he was thinking. She laughed. "I'm not an alien. I just meant I wasn't from here...like Alaska."

"Where are you from?" Kyle asked. "Somewhere warmer." Sophie said making him chuckle. "Sef, Kyle, could you step in here." Rose asked, opening her office door. Myth followed them into the office, and Rose pulled down the blinds, before sitting behind her desk, the phone was off the line and set down. "Nick says he doesn't remember meeting a Sef, but he's agreed to talk to you." Rose said. "Just to see if you both might get a memory jog. Alright?" Rose asked. Sophie nodded, and took the phone, placing it against her ear, she opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

"Hello?" Flashbacks started. The funeral for Josh Loskie, Nick babysitting her, all the deep conversations, then him moving away. "Nick?" Sophie managed, as tears welled up. Nick seemed to suck in a breath, it was silent for a long time before he spoke in a gasping breathless voice. "Sophie?!"

"Y-yeah." Sophie couldn't help the smile on her face. Rose and Kyle both looked surprised and happy. "What are you doing in Alaska, Eliza?" Sophie couldn't stop the tears, at the old nick name. "I don't knows Nick." She cried. "I can't remember."

"Listen, just calm down. Breathe. Everything is going to be okay." Nick promised. Sophie tried taking a deep breath, "We can contact your parents-"

"No...they...they're not around anymore." Sophie said. Nick seemed to take a long breath. "I'm sorry Eliza. I'm so sorry." He said. "Do you have a place to stay right now? I can get you a plane ticket up here to New York."

"You live in New York now?" Sophie asked, accepting the tissue Rose handed her. She wiped her eyes. "Yeah...I became a doctor, a pediatrician." Nick said. "Well...Kyle...he let me stay the night at his home...but I think the police station can hous-"

"Your welcome at my place." Rose offered. Sophie looked at Myth, and Rose nodded, her offer still up. Sophie nodded her thanks. "Yes. I have a place." She told Nick. "Good. Listen, someone had to have been taking care of you before. So once you get up here, or I get down there...we'll figure out your paperwork, and if you want you can live with me. Does that sound good?" Nick asked. "Sounds good." Sophie said, as she dried her last tear. "Good. Do you have a pen and paper? So you can get my home phone and cell?" Nick asked.

Rose happily complied to Sophie's wishes and Sophie's took down Nick's numbers, which included his cell phone, his home phone, and his office phone. Sophie wrote at the top of the paper Nick's name. "I'll figure everything out. Everything is going to be okay. Okay?" Nick asked. Sophie nodded before remembering she was on the phone and not an imparter. "Okay."

"Alright then, hand the phone over to officer Rose, we'll figure out the details. Sit tight." Nick said.
"Will do. Thank you Nick." Sophie said. "It's no problem Eliza." Nick promised. Sophie handed the phone to Rose. Her eyebrows shot up. "Sophie Elizabeth Foster. S, E, F, are her initials." Rose smiled at Sophie as Sophie smiled nervously. Kyle looked at her. "Smart thinking kid. I should of probably guessed that though." He said, with a smile. "Yes, but we to have other pressing matters..." Rose hesitated and looked at Sophie. Before covering the bottom half of the phone, without really covering it. "Kyle, why don't you take Sophie shopping? You can use my card." Rose said handing Kyle a credit card. "Sure thing." Kyle said. "Come on Sef." He said cheerfully.

Sophie glanced at Rose, who smiled encouragingly. "Go on, Mr. Loskie and I are just figuring out a few details." Rose lied. Sophie could see her mind flashing to Sophie bruised sides. Sophie sighed before standing up and crawling onto Myth's back, she let Myth follow Kyle out of the office. Kyle closed the door. "Well, looks like we're heading to Fairbanks' supermarket." Kyle said, as he pushed Rose's credit card into his wallet. "What are we shopping for?" Sophie asked. "Well new clothes for one thing. Your boots look alright, and so does you bag, but maybe a leash or something, to make Myth seem less scary and more like he's trained. Outside gear...y'know the norm you should have for Alaska." Kyle said, though he sounded as if he were dreading shopping. "Okay." Sophie agreed.

Borrowing Rose's truck, Kyle closed the door behind Sophie as she made sure the creature was comfortable, in the back seats, before she climbed over the console and to the front seat. Kyle started the truck which roared to life. Causing the windshield to fog up with heat. Turning on the wipers he started driving. "So, you got any colors you like in particular?" He asked. Sophie stared at the white wildness of Alaska as he drove. "Teal." Popped out of Sophie's mouth, a pair of jewelled teal eyes coming to mind, as if out of habit, though nothing else came. "Teal huh? Alright then, any others?" Kyle asked. "Grey and Red." Sophie replied.

"Unique colors. I've always preferred red or green." The mention of green brought hundreds of unique trees to Sophie's mind, it brought sadness, and mournful joy, to mind. "Red is the color of Rose's hair...and eyes." Sophie observed. Kyle scratched at his stubble... "Yeah...I guess I never realized that my favorite colors were somehow her..."

"So...do you like her?" Sophie asked. Kyle pulled his eyes away from the road, to glance at Sophie, before focusing back on driving the icy roads. "Who?" He asked. "Rose." Sophie persisted. "I just suffered through a dramatic break up." He said pressing a hand over his heart, but the smile on his face, reminded Sophie of looking at an animal set free. Thankful, grateful and happy. "But I won't lie, to you or to myself. I have always liked Rose. Since we were kids...I guess I never realized...I might like her in a more than friendly way. Tell her that, and I swear I'll never speak to you again." Kyle said shooting Sophie a glance. "I won't. I was just curious. Not like I might remember anyways." Sophie sighed.

"So what about you?" Kyle asked. "What about me?" Sophie asked, as she stared at the snow covered buildings, and slushy parking lots. "What about me?" Kyle mocked. "Do you have a special someone?" Sophie frowned as she felt heat crawl up her neck. "No...I don't think so." Sophie said. "Must be tough not remembering." Kyle mused out loud. "Yeah. It is." Sophie answered. "So why didn't you tell me your real name? Things might of gone a lot smoother." Kyle said. "I don't know...I just felt like I couldn't at the moment." Sophie replied with a shrug. Kyle sighed. "I guess I get where you're coming from." He parked the truck. "Here." He pulled a thick leather jacket out of the backpack he had brought, and handed it to Sophie. "Switch it with your...blanket thingy." He said. "It's a cloak." She smiled.

The jacket was a thick chestnut brown, with a brown woollen collar, and the inside was thick black and white flannel, with a pocket inside. Sophie exchanged her cloak for the thick oversized jacket, that wasn't as big as she though it'd be.
That's when she noticed Kyle wasn't a heavily built guy, he could be the kicker or runner for a football team, but his arms were still thick with muscle. Zipping up the jacket, Sophie decided to leave her bag in the truck, hopping out she watched as Kyle opened the door for Myth to jump out.

"He does pretty good in vehicles." Kyle said as Sophie grabbed onto the thick mane of Myth's soft fur, that was shedding into a white winter coat.
"I guess." Sophie shrugged. Kyle locked the truck. "Well let's go to the pet store first...what kind of animal did you say Myth was?" Kyle asked as they started trudging through the slippery parking lot. "Um...dog..." Sophie said, as she looked at the long wolf like tail. "He looks part wolf...and Saint Bernard maybe...but I mean he is massive." Kyle said. Sophie slipped on a patch of ice, but clinging to Myth's mane she found herself still upright.

"Lots of muscle forming formula." Sophie shrugged. "Right." Kyle shoved open the first pair of doors that lead to the supermarket. The other pair opened automatically. Workers scurried about, restocking, helping customers, and doing their normal jobs. The supermarket was massive, and looked to be like a one stop shop. Clothes, food, gear, snowmobiles, food items, tools, kitchen wares, furniture, blankets...everything.

"Pet aisle is this way." Kyle said, as he pulled a cart out of the cart areas. Sophie followed him, staring around not really noticing how other customers and even workers stared at Myth. "Here we go." Kyle said stopping in front of harnesses, collars, and leashes. All clearly to small for Myth. Myth however found a thick red ball, that he started pawing at.
Sophie and Kyle looked from the thickest collars to Myth's even thicker neck. "This.....might be a problem." Kyle said, holding the 'i' out in 'this'.

"It might." Sophie agreed. "You think if we connected two together, it'll fit?" Kyle asked. Sophie looked at Myth's thick mane. "I think three or four might fit." Sophie said. As she watched Myth's paw squash the hard chewing ball to a flat splat of rubber?

Splat.

Splotch.

Playing the game splotch came back to Sophie in a flash. Her and Dex playing splotch, beating Dex at splotch...and for some reason a pink splotcher exploded, in the middle of a large room which threw Sophie off balance. "Sophie? Kid? You okay?" Sophie shook herself to the present where Kyle was holding two black collars, looking at her strangely. "I'm good. I just don't feel comfortable putting a collar on Myth. Maybe just a lead." Sophie said picking up a black leash and wrapping it around Myth's neck, pulling the end through the hand hold.

Kyle nodded. "That's good an all...but why don't we go for leather?" He based picking up a thick leash, Sophie nodded. "Good let's buy this, and finish shopping." Kyle said. After buying the leash, Sophie clipped the silver clasp on the loop of her tunic. Kyle chuckled, "It's more like he is leading you, instead of you leading him, now."

"Neither one of us leads the other." Sophie said as she pulled the leather jacket down over her waist. "We walk side by side as companions do."

"But you feed and take care of him right?" Kyle asked. Sophie nodded, "In return he protects and guards me. He shows an incredible judgement of character too. He let's me know if I am safe or if I am in danger. It's a two way relationship, we take care of each other." Sophie said. Kyle hummed under his breath. "I guess you're right." The next stop was the clothes store. Jeans, snow pants and jacket, T-shirts displaying superhero logos, elephants, wolves, feathers and dream catchers. Two pairs of boots and Kyle let Sophie take Rose's card into the 'women's' department, making sure she promised not to max it out, while he chose some outdoor gear for her. Such as skis, which he had promised to take her skiing with Rose, snow goggles, beanies, gloves, and emergency pack in case she got lost in the mountains. Just main basics for the frontiers of Alaska.

After Sophie had gotten what she needed, she found Kyle debating over a hunting knife or flip switch for her emergency pack. "Which one do you think you could use best?" He asked. "I already have a knife." Sophie sad rubbing Myth's head Kyle's head swiveled to her, "What? You do? Since when?" He asked. "It's in my bag, I had it since I woke up." Sophie answered. Kyle looked her over again, before speaking. "What kind is it?"

"It's...I'd say it's a hunting knife." Sophie shrugged. Myth had been holding the handles of the shopping bags in his mouth, as if he were a helping dog. He held them with ease, and his brown eyes watched every movement of the store. Every person, he smelled every scent he could hear every sound, every vibrating voice, he listened for danger he sniffed for danger, he watched for danger. He wouldn't hesitate to let Sophie know if anything was wrong.

"And you never bothered telling me?" Kyle asked Sophie as he set the knives down. "Why would I?" Sophie asked. "You were a stranger who was being very kind to me, inviting me into his house."

"I couldn't leave you out in the storm, I did that out of the kindness of my heart and had no other bad intentions." Kyle defended himself. "But you do understand why I didn't tell you?" Sophie asked, Kyle nodded, "You're smart for a kid...besides what are you? Twelve? thirteen?" He asked.

"I think I'm thirteen and a half." Sophie said as she gave Kyle, Rose's card back. "Do you remember if you have any brothers or sisters?" Kyle asked. Sophie shoved her hands deep into the jacket's pockets. "Did." Was all she said "Well that sounds like an unapproachable subject." Kyle said as he picked up several paracord bracelets. "Speaking of skiing." He said changing the subject, though they hadn't even been talking about skiing.

"You might like snowboarding. You can do crazy all kinds of crazy tricks, and you can compete. Though skiing is competitive, snowboarding is much better."

"You've competed?" Sophie asked Kyle, who grinned. "First place sweetheart, of course I had only been seventeen through nineteen then. They have an annual snowboarding and skiing competition here. Scouts sometimes come to watch the older competing kids, to see if they're worth sponsoring." Kyle said as he walked up to the cashier, who was staring wide eyed at Myth. "Why didn't you get sponsored then?" Sophie asked. "Two words: Devon Hills. One more word: cheater." Kyle paid for the gear, "That rat hit my ankle, nearly breaking it, I was taken out of the competition, and no one would believe me because no witnesses were around." Kyle said as Myth opened his mouth and took the bags in his mouth.

"Sounds fun." Sophie said, sarcastically. "Well it is, but I'll admit, I was looking for a fight, and he and I had been rivals for a while." Kyle shrugged. "Fire on Ice, that's what they called me." Kyle said. Sophie rolled her eyes looking at Myth, who rolled his eyes back at her. "Is that right?" She asked, as they headed for the doors. "Yes. Well it was Rose who started the name, but it caught on...eventually." Kyle added under his breath. Sophie laughed, as they walked pout into the cold air. Her breath puffing out in a white cloud. Sophie grinned up at Kyle, "Thanks for helping me...no matter what your intentions were." She teased, Kyle gave a fake glare, after her as she crossed the road with Myth. "They were pure!" He called after her, drawing attention to himself, he ran after her.

Back at the police station Rose was waiting for them. "How'd it go?" Rose asked, as Sophie walked in. "It was...nice." Sophie said, Myth grunted in agreement, as he rubbed himself against Sophie's legs. "Well..Nick and I talked." Rose said as Sophie sat on the floor to scratch Myth's sides and belly. Kyle sat next to them, rubbing Myth's ears. "What'd he say?" Sophie asked looking up at Rose who sat down in a chair. "He said, you told him your parents and family aren't around any more...what did you mean?" Rose asked. Sophie lowered her eyes to Myth. "They're not in the picture anymore..."

"Are they dead then?" Rose asked bluntly. Sophie found herself nodding. "So did you go into foster care?" Sophie shrugged. "I don't remember."

"Are you sure?" Rose asked. "Yes I'm sure. I'm not even sure how my parents died...or my sister...I just know they're gone." Sophie said, frustratedly. She did know, her parents had been relocated, she knew their names had changed, she knew they were safe and alive, but she couldn't tell the police that. She couldn't just tell them she was a lost elf. Again. "It's.. It's right there! And I just can't get it!" Sophie said tugging at her hair. "Okay! Hey easy there Sophie." Kyle said. "Don't pull your hair out." Sophie took a deep breath, "It sucks. I can feel the memory right at the back of my mind, haggling with my sanity, it's like I can only remember small details...like a karaoke machine I hid from sister, my cat Marty, fettuccine nights, and Ella...." Sophie trailed off. Ella. The bright blue elephant with an equally bright Hawaiian shirt, sat on a bed next to a sparkly dragon she remembered was Mr. Snuggles.

"Ella?" Rose prompted. "A stuffed animal I had...an elephant in fact..." Sophie said. "Is that why you chose the blue elephant shirt?" Kyle asked. Sophie shrugged. "Maybe. I don't know. I only remember small details, nothing that could help us...that could help me." Rose nodded. "At least you're remembering. It may be small details but you'll piece stuff together. I know you can do it. For now, Nick is willing to take you in his home. He's a pediatrician, he offered to fly up here and get you..but thankfully we have a full fledged pilot right here in Fairbanks doing nothing."

"We do?" Both Sophie and Kyle asked. A coy smile came on Rose's face. "Yes..." She said staring pointedly at Kyle. "Now hold on-" Kyle started but Rose smiled. "Kyle will fly you up to New York." Rose told Sophie. "I told Nick, you might want to see some sights and such, but he agreed he wouldn't be prepared for you, until next week. So you can stay with me until then. Now that Kyle is a free man, I'm sure he'll show you the sights around here. I'll join you when I can, but I do have work here. Nick said you can leave any time, and I did in fact inform him about Myth." Rose looked at Myth before back at Sophie.

"I just want you to know, you always have a place here. You can call me or Kyle anytime." Rose said handing Sophie a papers with phones numbers and their names. "Thank you." Sophie said taking the paper. She looked at Kyle and Rose, as she felt gratitude for the willing strangers to help her out. "Thank you for everything." Sophie said.

(Wow. Done. Now you guys see where the Loskies come in. Also that is Kyle's jacket that Sophie has now stolen, below.)
