Chapter 4
Jade stormed through the castle halls, going as fast as her thin legs would carry her. She felt thankful that through all the confusion of the morning her brain had somehow memorized the way back to the bedroom, her safe haven. She passed a few guards on the way back they all said good morning and bowed but she didn't stop for them. If she had she was afraid she would break down in front of them and she would have no doubt got in bother with the Queen if she had done. Crying was not perfection. She burst into the bedroom and slammed the door behind her. The room was empty, Katie had clearly gone elsewhere to do who knows what. Her breaths were short and rapid as she stumbled towards the bed. She allowed herself to fall backwards on it, finding comfort in the silky sheets she let the tears she had been holding back fall down her pale face. She moved onto her side and curled up in a fetal position and muffled the sobs with the soft material of her green dress. Jade's heart felt heavy, her head was thumping and her stomach unsettled. She didn't know what was going on, she just wanted to go home. She was convinced now that this was not a dream. Everything felt too real but her conclusion on that fact only made her more confused. How was that even possible? The only thing she knew was that it all started with that damn mirror. Jade jumped as a loud knock echoed throughout the stone room. She held back her sobs, hoping that if she made no sound her visitor would leave...but no such thing happened. The knocks just got louder and more impatient but still Jade didn't move. She couldn't find the energy too.
"I know that you're in there." Jade's eyes widened as she recognized the smooth voice that floated into the room. It was the mysterious stranger from earlier that morning. Jade shot up, all her energy suddenly coming flooding back to her. She ran to the mirror above the dresser and rubbed her eyes dry. She smoothed her hair and straightened her dress before running to the door as another knock shook the room. She flung the door open and smiled, hoping that he wouldn't notice the slight puffiness around her eyes. Jade stood there, waiting for him to say something but he said another. He simply stood there, the same cold expression on his face as he looked her up and down just as he had done the first time they met. Jade began to feel uncomfortable and subconsciously began to fiddle with her dress. The silence compelling her say something.
"Can I help you?" She urged. There was no reply from beautiful man for a while. He eventually answered her in way she didn't expect.
"When did you get here?" Jade felt her heart skip a beat with pure fear. Her hands began to become sweaty as she stood there in silence, trying to find the right words to say. She was in trouble and she was alone. There was no escape route, no one to help her. She felt trapped. "There's no use trying to lie to me, many have tried and all have failed." He sighed. "Are you alone?" Jade simply nodded. "Good." He replied as he stepped into the room. "Shut the door." He ordered as he moved towards the rooms centre. Jade felt her body obeying his command without thinking about it. His voice was so forcefully it seemed to have a hold on her. She closed the door but stayed close to it, it was her only way of escape in a situation where she felt unsafe.
"I-I-I..."
"There's no need to be afraid." His words were intended to be comforting but Jade could clearly hear the annoyance in the man's voice. "I have every intention of helping you."
"I woke up in this room this morning." Jade explained.
"Right, good. That gives us plenty of time." He said thinking out loud as he began to pace back and forwards across the room. "Before you woke up here did you make contact with a large golden mirror with gems surrounding it?" He asked although he already knew the answer.
"Yes, yes I did. I fell threw it actually." Jade confirmed stepped further into the room, suddenly feeling less in danger.
"I see, I assume that you have no idea what is going on?"
"No, no idea."
"I thought as much. The mirror you encountered is often referred to as the 'mirror of abyss' although it was not simply a mirror. It was a portal that has the ability to transport a soul into another dimension or world if you prefer. Billions of worlds exist, some are being born while others are dying constantly for unknown reasons. When you fell through that mirror your soul separated from your body. Your physically body will have remained in the world from which you came so that you may easily return to it when you wish. Your soul however for whatever reason ended up in this world." Jade just stood there staring at him, she had no idea what to say. The man waited for her to say something but carried on when she did not. "In every dimension that exists there is a you and there is a me. Think of them like your twin. There are genetically identical to you. Their appearance may be slightly different, their situation might be different to your own. In this world you are a Princess while in the next you might be a peasant living on the street. When your soul entered this world it needed a physically form but it couldn't inhabit just anybody. The body it inhabits has to be identical to your own which is why it ends up presiding in the you of this world. Do you understand what I am telling you?"
"I-I think so. So loads of worlds exist...there's a me in all of them...my body is at home...and my soul has taken over the me of this world's body...but where is this world's me?" She asked with a frown.
"Still inside. Currently the two of you are sharing that body. Her soul will be in a deep slumber and she will not awake until you step back through the mirror of Abyss and return to your own world. It's a clever way to prevent you meeting you essentially."
"Okay...so why are my parents still my parents? Sort of."
"Blood relations remain the same in every dimension. If they weren't then you would no longer be you. Their personalities will of course change depending on the world much like yours would. Friendships however change. The you of this world might not even know you best friend from the world that you come from due to the difference in your situation."
"Trust me I know her alright." Jade whispered to herself. Her mind drifted back to Katie. She got it now. In this world they were not friends because she was a Princess and she was acting differently because it wasn't the Katie she had come to know...it was a kind of like a different version of Katie.
"We'll need to get you back through the mirror within a month. If that doesn't happen the results will be...devastating to say the least."
"Why? What happens?"
"Essentially you would die. The human body can only last a month without a soul present. Without one the body becomes weaker and weaker until eventually it fails. Now if you were to die in that world you would also die in this one. If you die in one world the you of every world dies, the cause of death would be different but generally once you're dead, you're dead. That wouldn't a problem normally except the body you're currently inhabiting would die with two souls in it. It's un natural, not right. It would create a black hole in which this world and every other world would be sucked into. Ending life as we know it."
"WHAT?" Jade shouted feeling panic set in. "We have to find the mirror then, I have to go home before everyone dies." She began to pace the room in a blind panic while her visitor stood still and watched her. He was annoyingly calm for someone would had just told her that everything and everyone would die if she didn't get home soon.
"I agreed but it's not that simple."
"What do you need? Why not?" Jade questioned still pacing.
"Well you are the Princess, in appearance at least. The KIng would never allow you to leave the Kingdom for fear that something might happen to you and we would need to leave in order to find the mirror. On top of that we have to obtain all the gems, the mirror will not work without them."
"Well where are they? Where is the mirror? Can't you talk to the King, explain the situation and get me out of here? How long will all this take?" She was rapidly firing questions at him. She frustratedly ran a hand through her hair while she continued to pace, her speed increasing the more she panicked.
"The gems are in the different Kingdoms. There are four kingdoms in this world, the one you're in and three others. I removed the gems from the mirror and gave one to each Kingdom so that the mirror couldn't be used. I'm not entirely sure why the me of your world didn't remove the gems from the mirror too, if would have saved us this great mess. As for the mirror itself it's buried in the heart of this world in the mountain in the middle of the four kingdoms. It used to be a Kingdom itself however it has long since been destroyed."
"Why would you remove the gems? Who even are you?"
"Have I not introduced myself. How rude, I suppose I was too caught up in explaining the situation. I'm the only wizard in existence, my name is Zachariah..."
