Chapter 2
Jade's eyes fluttered open, something had woken her up. She yawned and sat up, the airbed making that rubber on rubber sound beneath her weight. Rays of moonlight lit up the floor at the end of her bed from the uncovered window, but the room itself remained as empty as it had been when she had gone to bed. Jade sighed. Great, now she needed the toilet. She threw the covered off herself, shivering slightly as the cold night air hit her like a ton of bricks and slipped her small feet into the pumps by the side of her bed, she didn't bother to tie the laces. There was no way she was walking around the house bare footed, not until everywhere had been thoroughly cleaned. She pulled herself from the bed and stretched, she hated waking up in the middle of the night and it didn't help that her new house looked like somewhere out of a horror film. Jade found herself looking over at the mirror. She hadn't mentioned it at dinner. If she had what would her parents do? Sell it? It made sense, it must have been worth a fortune but Jade didn't want that. There was something about it that seemed to draw her in and it wasn't just because it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. It was hard to see it in such little light but it looked like the gems were glowing in the moonlight. Jade frowned. It looked like there was someone in the mirror. At first she thought she had been imagining it but the more she looked the more she saw it. Jade cautiously moved closer, the image became clearer with every step she took. It was a girl, lying in bed asleep. The girl looked a lot like her but with much longer hair that fanned around her as she slept in her silk sheeted bed. Jade stepped back a little, she must be dreaming still. Jade heard the sound of a rodent scurry around the wooden floor behind her. She whipped around to see where it had come from too see 2 beady eye looking back at her. She freaked and stepped back. She ended up stepping on one of her untied shoelaces and unable to stop her momentum she flew backwards. Letting out a shriek of surprise she closed her eyes and waited for the pain of hitting the mirror...
But it never came. Instead of hitting the mirror she fell through it. Like the mirror had been the surface of a body of water. Jade looked down at herself. Her body was no longer solid, it appeared to be nothing but mist. White and transparent, like the slightest wind could blow it away. Except there wasn't any wind, there wasn't anything. All Jade could see was darkness, no light, no sound. As if she was falling through a never ending void. It might have been peaceful if she had had the slightly idea of what was happening. Instead Jade's mind was running wild, her imagination conjuring up the worst possible situations, her heart rate becoming more erratic by the second. This had to be a dream, maybe she had never actually got out off her bed. Maybe she was still in her creepy house under the covers of her airbed...but this dream was looking more and more like a living nightmare. Jade's head began to hurt. Whether it was the stress of the situation or the smothering atmosphere she felt around her she didn't know. She continued to fall until eventually she found her eyelids becoming heavy and she fell into a deep sleep...
When Jade woke up again she welcomed the light that blinded her. Relief washed over her as she realised she was no longer inside that void of nothingness. She lay there for a moment, relishing in the fact that her nightmare was over...until it dawned on her. Jade frowned as she came to the realisation that her mould stained windows wouldn't have allowed that much light through them. Her frowned deepened as she noticed that she also wasn't staring up at the very high, old and dusty ceiling of her new bedroom. Jade sat up quick enough to twinge her neck slightly and looked around. This was definitely not her room. It was beautiful but not hers. The bed she was in was an elaborate, wooden, 4 posted bed with curtains dangling from the 3 sides in front of her for her privacy. They looked as if they had recently been pulled open. The sheets she had been sleeping in felt soft, warm and smelt as if they had just been freshly washed. Jade felt the panic start to set in, she had no idea where she was or how she had got there. What was she going to do? Thinking that maybe if she explored her surroundings more she might gain an idea of what to do, she decided to get up.
Jade swung her feet out of the bed and placed them on the soft, beige rug that the bed sat on. She walked up to the window placed on the right of the bed, opposite the door that looked out onto the most beautiful garden Jade had ever seen. There were flowers of every size and colour and a large stone fountain in the middle with an elegant stone woman stood on top who could have easily been compared to a goddess. The clear water reflected the sun's orange light as it was rising in the sky. Jade left the window and moved to her left towards a white, gold embroidered dresser. There wasn't much on it. A hairbrush, some old style writing paper, a pen and a few bottles of expensive looking perfume. Above the desk on the wall was a round mirror with a thick gold frame. Jade gently took a seat on the beautifully crafted white, cushioned chair beside her and looked at herself. Most of her reflection was her. Her green eyes were the same, her pale skin although un naturally clear and smooth was the same. The most noticeable difference was her hair. Instead of the short and easily manageable bob she had come to love her brown hair now reached past her waist. It was shiny, well cared for and incredibly soft. Jade ran a hand through it carefully when her eye glossed over something in the mirror that caught her attention. It was a gorgeous dress. It was green, the same colour as her eyes. Jade stood up and moved to get a closer look at it as is hung from the handle of a large, white and gold wardrobe. The dress felt as though it was made of silk and reached all the way to the floor. It had long sleeves with the back reaching long past the hand of it's wearer while the front part stopped at the wrist. It had a rather square neckline with gold embroidery around the edge. The same pattern could be found around the hip area of the dress with a long strip carrying on from the hip to the base of the dress in the middle. 2 golden embroidery armbands could be found on each of the sleeves in the middle of the bicep. Jade hand her hand down the silky material and let her mind drift from the confusing situation she was in. The was a sudden knock on the door. Jade jumped, all the peace she may have been feeling fled from her as she backed away from the dress, looking around, terrified, unaware of where she was or what to do.
"My lady, I have some fresh sheets for you." It was the voice of a young woman, there was something about it that sounded strangely familiar. Jade didn't know what to do, was the woman talking to her? Jade opened her mouth to speak but no sound came out. The lump in her throat was preventing anything from existing her throat. After a short silence, which felt like an eternity to Jade, the doorknob turned and began to open. Jade felt herself breath in, she had nowhere to run, nowhere to go. Jade watched as the door opened and a woman came in. Jade's eyes widened when she saw who it was.
"Katie!" She exclaimed in a relieved tone. Her friend's skin was darker than she was used too and her hands looked tired and rough but her ginger hair was as bright as ever, though a lot less tame than Katie usually liked it. Her hair had always been wavy and full of volume but she spent hours making it perfectly smooth. The clothes she was wearing were not something Katie would wear in a hundred years. A maid's outfit. Like something you would see in one of those old shows, the plain black dress and the white slightly frilly apron.
"Yes my lady?"
"What are you wearing?" Jade questioned frowning as she looked her friends outfit up and down. Katie looked down and began smoothing out her dress, suddenly feeling self conscious.
"The outfit I wear everyday to work my lady. If it offends you I can change." Her face remained blank as she spoke and it was clear to Jade that this might have looked like her friend but something was wrong. The Katie she knew would have run into the room and hugged her so tightly that her lungs might have cracked. She would have never worn something like that and even if did and Jade made a comment she would have snapped back.
"Oh no of course not." Jade replied with a nervous laugh. This was all so strange to her. She was sure it was a dream but everything felt so real but nothing made any sense at all.
"Very well my lady. I've come to help you dress for breakfast, your parents are expecting you to join them without fail." Her parents. Jade smiled. Maybe they would be themselves. Jade watched silently as Katie placed the neatly folded white sheets she had come in with on the unmade bed. She then walked over to the wardrobe and opened it. Jade moved a little closer to looked over her shoulder. Inside the wardrobe there were countless beautiful dresses, they were mostly green with the occasional exception of a purple or black dress. Katie rummaged in the bottom of the wardrobe in one of the draws and pulled out a corset. Katie shut the wardrobe and turned to face Jade only to see her look of pure horror as she stared at the corset. "Are you okay my lady?"
"I'm...not going to have to wear that am I?" She asked, her voice breaking slightly.
"Well of course my lady." Katie answered matter of factly. Jade tried to say something but ended up abandoning the idea, her words once again evading her she simply nodded. "Do you need help getting out of your nightgown?" Katie inquired when Jade didn't move. Jade glanced down as the full length, white nightgown she had woken up in and shook her head.
"No I can do it myself." Jade began to slip the gown off her shoulders when Katie reached forward and placed a gently hand on her forearm to stop her. Jade looked at her blankly.
"My lady don't you wish to undress behind the partition?" She asked gesturing towards a white, 4 doored partition by the wall in the corner of the room.
"Um...sure." Jade said with a nod. Katie handed her the corset in her hand and smiled slightly at her.
"If you need assistance in putting the corset on feel free to call me. I'll just be changing you bedsheets." She told her. Jade nodded and walked over to the partition. She glanced back at Katie to see her making her way to the large bed and went out of sight. She let out a sigh of relief. She had no idea where she was or what was going on but everything seemed to be going fine. Jade looked at the white corset in her hand. The middle was a thick white material with wires running through it all the way around and the top had white bits of lace. Jade lifted it up and she frowned at all the laces hanging from it. This was not going to be pleasant. Jade let it fall to the floor and slipped her nightgown off so she wore nothing but a pair of plain white underwear. She looked down as herself, she was a lot thinner than she normally was. Probably too thin, the bottom of her ribs were unnaturally prominent. She noticed she was more well endowed than before but she was complaining about that. She picked up the corset and wrapped it around herself. As she reached for the laces at the back the corset fell loose and hung too low. She attempted to hold it up with one arm and pull the back laces tight with the other, but it proved to be impossible.
"Katie..." She called and waited patiently for a response.
"Yes my lady?"
"I need some help with this thing." She told her with a sigh.
"Do you mind if I come behind the partition?"
"No of course not." Jade thought it was a ridiculous question but this Katie seemed to be treating her like she was something special. Jade tried not to think too much into it, it would give her a headache if she did. All she knew was that Katie seemed to be her maid and she seemed to be a rich, important 'lady.' She didn't understand any of it but dreams never really made sense. Jade looked behind her as Katie came around the corner and took the laces in her own hands and calmily instructed Jade to hold the corset to her body.
"Breath in deeply my lady." Katie instructed. Jade did as she was told just as Katie yanked the laces. Jade felt the air being pushed from her lungs and when she thought it was over Katie pulled it tighter. Fiddling with the laces and pulling again. Jade was sure that it if got any tighter her lower ribs would break, it was painful and it was only getting tighter. By the time Katie had finished Jade could barely breath. She has the perfect hourglass figure but at the cost of her comfort. How was she supposed to do anything when her ability to breath was seemingly impossible?..
