Chapter 9: The Emerald Enchantress
"Are you sure about this, Your Majesty?" Tavros asked as he saw the queen gathering her weapons from where they took rest for the night. "I will not be able to keep you safe if you go forward with this."
"I am, Tavros. I have a gut feeling that I might be right." She took her mother's dagger in her hand and had a firm grip on it. "I'll be fine. Don't worry. Please don't tell anyone that you left me alone because, well, I don't want to cause you any trouble."
"But what will I ask if anyone asks me any questions? I am a very bad liar and everyone knows it."
"Tell me a lie." She crossed her hands across her chest to look intimidating.
"I hate apples." He lifted his head up as he said it.
She scrunched her nose. "Oh, you are a bad liar." She scratched the back of her head, thinking about how to fix this situation because questions would be asked and she would need to protect his actions. "Okay, if anyone asks you, tell them that you accompanied me till the entrance to the Witch's lair but you were captured by her minions."
"Your Majesty, I still believe that we should come back with the rest of the crew and then investigate because I will be held responsible if anything happens to you. I cannot protect you."
"You won't have to, my friend." She clamped his shoulder. "Have my back with the....new truth. I'll be up in a few hours and if, by any chance, I don't return by tomorrow morning-"
"Please do not say that."
"I will be back. I promise you."
She climbed down to the sea-cave, tracing the dust on the walls as she went down. Tavros followed her and said, "I'll be waiting here in case you need help."
"Have the weapons and Queen Susan's horn at the ready. I hope you don't have to use it." She took a deep breath as she stared at the blue water. "Here goes nothing," she said before jumping into the water.
Once underwater, she thought of forgetting about everything. It gave her a peaceful state in mind and since she could breathe, she would have preferred to stay there forever. But she couldn't do that now, could she? The thought of meeting other children of Poseidon intrigued her. Maybe the Sea God had also blessed her apart from Aslan since Narnia had the influence of other cultures as well. It was her turn to bring about the Indian and other traditions that weren't already prevailing.
Sophie kept looking around for a sign that could suggest that there was an entrance to the dam but there was none. And so, she swam towards the sea bed. It was quite easy since the sword she was carrying was weighing her down. The currents were guiding her as they went their way and they helped her go her way. Schools of fishes passed her and she waved at them. She was happy to be underwater.
She couldn't see anything for miles but just as she was about to give up, there was a loud bang from the sea bed followed by a green glow. "That is it!" She exclaimed as she swam even further. As she neared the sea bed, she could see the lair of the Green Witch. "Huh. Smart."
There was a castle underwater that stood on the sea bed. The only entrance inside was through the front gate as everything else was blocked. Water-proofed maybe? Sophie's instincts told her that the castle inside was not going to be filled with water.
She continued swimming and made sure that there was no one to attack her because even if she could survive under water, fighting with a sword would be hard. She wouldn't be able to use her arms to the full extent since she was trying to stay underwater. She looked around for another path into the castle but couldn't find any. It was just the iron gates but she wondered how she could enter without letting the water in.
Commander Octavian had brought his hands together and created a sphere of water to control the waves. It was a way to steady yourself against the current of the water. "Vacuum sphere." She tried to concentrate on it but nothing seemed to happen. She added tension to her fingers and pulled the muscles together at the joints. "Please work!" She whispered hastily and tried to create a sphere so that she could use to enter the castle. "Ugh!"
Right then, something pulled her trousers and when she looked down, it was a crab. He pointed to the sea bed, making her frown. "Are you asking me to touch the bed?" She asked and felt stupid doing so because obviously, she couldn't speak mermanian. The crab pointed once again and moved away. That did make her curious and so, she pushed the sea weeds away as she tried to find the sea bed.
The sand was very cool and wet. It made her feet feel as though she was standing on clayey soil. Sophie pulled up the sleeves of her tunic and tied her hair into a bun, always doing that when she needed to concentrate. "Okay. Here goes nothing," she whispered and touched the sea bed with both her hands.
A blue glow appeared right where she had touched and lightened the entire sea bed, lighting her own eyes to the deepest shade of blue. It was as if she had the information of the Seven Seas right there because a few seas away from where she was, a majestic creature stood facing the vast ocean. He dug his paw into the shores of the ocean and roared. Ripples were created from the impact that reached her in an instant. Sophie felt the blow hit her, which made her take her hands off of the sand.
Sophie knew what she had to do. "Thank you, Aslan."
Once again, she stood to get the vacuum sphere and that time, she got it right. It was all about the hand movement. She was able to form it but couldn't guide it to stay stable because she wasn't allowing it to, going directly to the second step of creating something out of water because no one guided her through it. But Aslan had, and she was grateful to him.
Sophie looked at her hands and had them faced against each other. She pushed an invisible barrier together between them. There was a blue glow and then, she turned the sphere, her hands coming on top of each other. "Yes!" She exclaimed as the sphere took control of her and she was inside it.
Holding the hilt of her sword, she pushed herself forward to reach the front gates. She pulled a pin out of her hair and bit it to straighten it. Tracing the lines in between in gates as per Aslan's instructions with the pin, a small whir was heard and the door opened. Sophie swam through the gap and pushed the door to close. While she did that, she made the sphere to protect the entrance to prevent water from rushing in. If the castle was waterproof, she wouldn't have had any problem. But she couldn't take that risk.
Once she locked the doors and turned around, a gasp left her throat.
Her suspicions were confirmed. The Witch's lair was indeed the castle under the ocean, and it was dry inside.
The castle had a glass dome covering the top that allowed the people inside to look at the outside sea while outsiders couldn't do the same. The dome was very fascinating as it reflected the sunlight on the surface of the sea-cave. A teal-coloured hue filled the room and the reflection of the waves floated through the walls, creating white and golden lines.
The hallway she was in was filled with statues. Her first thought was why someone would want so many statues - sea-horses, a couple of mermaids, a few mermen, and other creatures that she knew were Narnian but whose names she didn't know or couldn't pronounce.
There was a door to her right and she was immediately tempted to open it. When she peeked inside to see what was on the other side, she was caught by surprise. It was the definition of green. There was a throne at the end of the room that looked as though it was made out of loose rocks. The throne itself looked like a sea shell while the protrusions that covered the throne looked like the feet of a crab.
"Oh Saints!" She closed her mouth when she realised that the structure of the throne was a giant crab. The legs of the crab, that were the protrusions, had spiral stones going around it and when she looked closely, they looked like the skins of sea snakes.
"Who are you?" She heard a voice from behind her, making her pull her sword out in defense as she turned around.
A woman was standing at the centre of the podium where the throne was situated. She was wearing a long pine-coloured gown with its train reaching the bottom of the steps. Her skin was very pale but with a tinge of green. "You!" She exclaimed after she looked closely at Sophie.
"Who are you?"
The Green Witch started laughing as she saw Sophie on guard. "There is no need for weapons." She swiped her hand and Sophie felt an invisible force take her sword away, but she pulled it back and fought against the magic.
"I'll keep it, thanks." Sophie told her, getting back into the defence position. "What's your name?"
"Ha, what's my name!" She laughed, but when she saw the confusion on Sophie's face, she composed herself. "You don't know!" She sounded quite disappointed.
"Am I supposed to?"
There was a sense of satisfaction in her eyes. "Tut tut, dear. I was expecting more from the one they call 'The Lost Legacy'," she expressed as she sat down on her throne, placing her hands on either side of the throne.
Sophie blinked. "So you know who I am." For someone who lived underwater, she seemed to be up to date with things.
The woman had a striking beauty and long black hair. She walked as though she owned the world and she definitely had a personality problem. "Of course I know who you are, darling! After all, I'm here because of your parents." She spoke in a childish voice and pointed around her.
Sophie lost her stance. She had not been expecting to hear that. "What?"
"They were a lovely couple." It was the Green Witch who prompted Sophie but she only heard Jadis in her head. "They were so loving and affectionate. Ah, it hurt me to hear that their castle fell down."
"Stop it."
"Well, to answer your question, people that fear me call me a Witch. My name has been lost in the air for centuries now."
"Well broccoli, why don't you give yourself up so that we can go back to our days?"
"The name's Olivis!" She shouted as she stood up. "Don't dare to run your mouth with me!"
"Olivis? Huh. Why am I not surprised?" She spun the sword around. "For your information, Olivis, I have someplace to be. Wasting time is not a part of me agenda nor is it my intention. So I say that we get down to business."
"What could you possibly want from me? If you haven't noticed with your teeny human eyes, I'm stuck here."
Sophie ran up the steps on the podium and put her sword on Olivis' throat but she vanished in green mist. "What?" She looked around her, finding the throne and the room empty.
"Why don't we take a walk down?" She heard a voice and saw the empty throne glow as she felt a sharp pain through her body. "That's better."
Sophie turned around to see where she was, feeling dizzy having been transported to another room. "What did you do to me?" She asked, noticing the change in the room.
"I simply moved us to the tower, sweetheart," said Olivis as she moved around the room. She swiped her hand as though she was throwing something off and Sophie's wrists were getting restrained.
"Hey!" Sophie shouted as she tried to remove the chains from her right hand.
"Oh, I keep forgetting that humans have two hands. Silly me." Olivis swiped her hand once again and Sophie was now chained to the wall. The pulley for the chain was too far from her. She could pull her chain but when the pulley moved, it made a lot of noise.
"So that's your plan then? Chaining me up?"
"Not at all, darling!"
The room was filled with cabinets and there was a bird cage at the end of the room. That seemed very odd to Sophie because they were hundreds of feet under water. Why would anyone keep a bird for company? There was a red-breasted robin inside who started flying up and down her cage. "Silence!" Olivis screamed at the bird. "I have tolerated you long enough now. Annoy her for a while, will you?" She said, pointing to Sophie.
Caspian moved her hand once again and the bird cage crashed against the wall next to Sophie. "Stop it!" She shouted at the Witch. "You can't hurt living creatures like this and you can't keep me chained up. Not for long anyway. How do you know that I'm here all alone? Huh?"
Olivis turned around with a false pity on her face. "And what are you going to do about it?" She broke out laughing and walked out of the room, leaving Sophie alone with the bird that was regaining her balance.
"You need a psychiatrist," Sophie whispered to herself. "Witch."
