Chapter 12: Finding the Past in the Present
Sophie was dreaming. She was definitely dreaming. She was one hundred percent, mother of God, dreaming.
"You're from Narnia?" Caspian spoke on her behalf, because she sat there with her mouth open.
"You're King Farhan and Queen Helen's daughter!"
Sophie blinked at Chad. "Y-you're from Narnia."
But Chad was already on his feet then. He sat down on one knee and bowed his head. "Legacy Sophie."
Sophie gaped at him. "You're from Narnia!"
Caspian placed a hand on her shoulder to let her know that he was with her.
"Well, of course I'm from Narnia!" Chad said in a 'duh' tone.
"I've been staying with a Narnian my whole life?"
Chad looked around and seeing that nobody was there, he cocked his head at her. Well, there was one person - the intern, but he had his headphones on and was cleaning the place up. "Well, not entire life but-" Sophie threw the salt shaker at him. "Ow!"
"You lied to me!"
"So did you!" He was on his feet and taking back his seat. "Well, I don't blame you because you didn't know that you were....are the Princess of Narnia." Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Caspian shake his head. It was a bad idea to call Sophie the princess. "I should call you the Queen, shouldn't I?"
Sophie leaned forward against the table and looked the person before her directly in the eyes. "Who. Are. You."
"This makes so much sense. The magic of the borders removed everyone's memory here so that you could start over at your true home." He rambled about the current possibility that was before him as if the young woman hadn't just snarled at him. "But why are you back now? This doesn't make sense. There must be peace in Narnia, or so I assumed. Is everything okay?"
"We fell into a river," Caspian said while Sophie was remembering all the times that she was with someone who knew who she was. Chad knew who she was without knowing it. She was with an actual guardian her entire life. "Water bodies seem to have an effect on connecting this world to Narnia. Sophie's ring-"
"Is the anchor. It's the beacon that connects both the world."
Sophie glared at Chad. "Who....are you?"
He sighed. "I am a warlock. Was a warlock, anyway."
"How do you know Sophie?"
"I was the Court Secretary for King Farhan and Queen Helen's court." Sophie gasped. Caspian was immediate in taking her hand in his. Chad realised that she knew what could have happened. "It was I whom Jadis talked to. Not Coriakin. I betrayed the court and banished myself to another world. It was a walk into the unknown but I took it. Ramandu took the fall for my stupidity and as far as I know, he is now at his own island."
"He is," Caspian said. "And he has kept your secret in silence all these years."
It wasn't Caspian's intention to inculcate guilt to Chad, but the sorrow in the latter's eyes was very evident. "He really is a good friend. I don't deserve it."
Sophie took a deep breath to calm herself down. "Tell me everything."
Chad did not leave a single piece of information out. "I am a warlock. Was a warlock, whatever. Once I came to this world, I realised that my powers were taken away from me by the magical borders that separate the two universes. It took some time to settle in but I managed to not get caught."
"Since you age very slowly," Sophie teased.
Chad clicked his fingers at her as Sophie always made fun of him for being a Dorian Gray because he seemed to look younger as the days passed by. She never connected him to being a Narnian. "I tried new hobbies and decided to open my own restaurant."
Sophie wanted to lighten the mood up right then. "Does this mean that you are really rich?"
He laughed. "You could say that."
She leaned forward in her seat again, resting her hands on the table and squinted her eyes at him. "How rich?"
He followed her movements and they sat eye to eye. "Very rich."
She smiled. "What you said about Coriakin," she started. "Is it enough to get him pardoned?"
"Ah." He shook his head. "Aslan is the only one who can decide that, but it seems highly unlikely that he would go back on a decision that he made."
"Lilliandil told me that she was searching for me even in this realm. Is it a coincidence that we met?"
Chad was thinking the same thing. If a star had been looking out for Sophie in Narnia and had been searching for her in the Other World, could it be fate or destiny that brought Chad and her together? Sophie was a person who didn't let others take care of her. Chad changed that. He was the reason that she was who she was today. "It seems that the stars have been guiding you towards who you are since the beginning," Chad said. "Whether it was a coincidence that we met or not, I am glad that I was able to help you, Soph."
Caspian placed a hand on her shoulder and she smiled at him. "Thank you."
"And you are the King of Narnia, I suppose?" Chad asked Caspian.
"Yes, I am. Caspian the Tenth of Telmar."
Chad looked between Caspian and Sophie. She looked really happy; happier than he could ever have imagined her to be. She looked healthy and was getting enough sleep. His eyes opened wide and he clapped his hands together. "Wait, you must be hungry! What was I thinking trying to confront you before letting you eat?"
Chad's policy was: Eat first. Talk later. He was a real Remus Lupin because he always had chocolate with him.
"Lucas!" Chad called out to the dark-haired dude behind the counter. His dark brown eyes seemed to scan the table that the guests were sitting in.
Sophie shivered. "Is everything okay?" Caspian whispered to her.
Sophie rolled back her shoulders. "Y-yeah, I'm fine." There was something about Chad's right hand man that didn't sit right with her, but she wasn't a judgemental person and decided to let it go when they broke eye contact.
"What would you like to have?" Chad asked.
She looked at Caspian and seemed to think about it. He narrowed his eyes at her in a playful manner. "I'm thinking about what you would like to have." She handed him the menu. "We will have your special hot chocolate."
"With or without-"
"With ice-cream." She smiled. "We will need tubs and tubs of ice-cream. I'm not leaving without eating it."
"You're leaving?" Chad raised his eyebrows at her. "No way. Nuh-uh. You are staying here until I figure out how you can go back. I can try to figure out how the bridge works and find out how the ring has brought you here....if it has." Chad winked at the couple and then spoke in a whisper. "I may not have been completely honest when I said that my magic was no longer with me."
While Chad got food for them, Sophie told Caspian a gist about how she was living. She wasn't going to dump the entire journey on him because he was already handling the overwhelming situation very well. He was a medieval King stuck in the 21st Century. He was dealing with this really admirably and she was going to help him the entire way.
"I'm so sorry, Soph."
She pursed her lips together. "It wasn't that I didn't want you to know. It....I wanted a new start. Narnia is a new world where I could start over without anyone's expectations. And...." She looked him in the eye. "You saved me from my loneliness."
"Oh, Sophie." He pulled her into a hug. "You may be stealing my lines there, wife."
She sniffed, a smile creeping up on her face. "Thank you, husband."
Someone cleared their throat and the both of them broke apart. Chad set down two white mugs in front of them and two pints of ice-cream as well. "Bon appetit."
Sophie looked at Cas with excitement. "Are you ready?"
He laughed. "Let's see who has my wife's heart more than me." He took one spoon of the ice-cream because Sophie wanted them to eat dessert first. "Oh my. This is brilliant! Oh, we have some serious competition right here." He spoke to the tub.
She wrapped her arms around Caspian's neck. "But I will always choose you."
He narrowed his eyes at her. "But....ice-cream!"
Sophie laughed, letting him go and eating her pint of ice-cream. "Now you know."
He took another spoon. "We should make this in Narnia."
She nodded. "We definitely should!"
"You know?" Chad spoke, letting them know of his presence because it seemed like they had a way of only acknowledging each other - being so in love. "You could take back some cocoa beans. You could have chocolate in Narnia. I'm sure that you could also use it as offerings."
Sophie's eyes opened wide at that picture as she turned to face Caspian. "Please?"
He ate another spoon of ice-cream. "No action in the seven kingdoms is going to make me leave this behind."
After they ate, Chad broke his patience let the two youngsters explain their life story to his old self, getting along with the King when it came to battle plans and sailing and noticing only the happiness that Sophie had on her face. Then, he turned to her and asked what happened the day she went to Narnia, getting impressed when she revealed of having punched Jonathan the bully. "Good girl."
Sophie continued the story and told him how she reached Narnia and how she started to stay at the castle. "And how did you two...." He pointed between the two of them.
Caspian and Sophie smiled at each other. She shrugged, not knowing how to explain it. "He revealed his feelings for me at a ball."
"Nice," Chad approved.
"But that's not what happened, did it?" Caspian asked, and Sophie buried her face in her hands. "She told me that we could not court each other-"
"What!"
She looked at Chad. "What?"
"How could you....why?"
"Because I was a nobody."
"I....but....how could you say no!"
Caspian laughed. "That's precisely how I felt."
They continued the story and then talked about how the White Witch returned to Narnia by tricking an innocent family, explaining about the battle, after which she told him about what happened with the Pevensies. "That was a great plot twist - you falling and finding yourself in Narnia." Chad told. "I'm guessing that it was a similar situation now that you are here. Please. Continue." She told him what happened the day she returned to Narnia with the Pevensies and Eustace. "That must have been a beautiful reunion!"
"It was the best day of my life." Caspian said. "You were back. It was all that mattered."
"It was the greatest day of my life as well." He took her hand in his and squeezed it gently.
"Aww you two are literal sunshines."
We turned to look at Chad and she frowned at him. "Sunshines? Really?"
"I will take that as a compliment." Caspian said.
"Are you forgetting your House and Order?" She asked Chad.
His eyebrows furrowed together. "What am I? A Hufflepuff?"
Then they talked about what happened during their time at the Dawn Treader. Chad's eyes opened wide when Sophie mentioned Olivis. "The Witches of Charn. The three sisters are from another realm called Charn. They came to Narnia in order to take over the world. But Aslan's graces protected the land, and he still does, thank the Saints. Otherwise, the sisters would have won a long time ago."
"I've not met the Red Witch yet." Sophie said. "Carmis."
"I hope you don't have to. She is absolutely ruthless. She doesn't care about anyone but her sisters. But sometimes, that could be questioned as well. It is the youngest you should look out for. She is-"
"Crazy." They said at the same time.
"She is supposedly still alive. She is under some kind of spell." Caspian said.
"You need to search for her and kill her. Take her out of the equation. Whatever you do, do not make a deal with her." Sophie was going to ask why but didn't need to. "You cannot trust her. She is always true to her word but she always twists her words, and the impressive part is that she will make you believe them."
"How do you know this?" Caspian asked.
Chad took a deep breath. "Because that's what she did to me."
Sophie's mouth fell open. "You....made a deal with her."
Shame spread across his face. If he could have changed his decisions, he would have. "I had to. I had to do it to protect every star in Narnia. And it doesn't matter that I'm the one paying the price for it. If I had to do it again, I would do it without any hesitation."
This was a whole new side to Chad that Sophie was seeing. He was the goofy person that everyone turned to when they needed help. But seeing him in front of her that day, she remembered all the hints that she could have caught onto with the way that he talked, like he was from a different era. But they made it into a game and it was their thing.
"This is the first time someone from Narnia is here. It's been too long since I found someone from the other side." Chad said. "Have you thought about how you will be returning? Because I may have a solution. I might be a little rusty but I'm sure that there is something....a book that could help us. I'll start searching for it right away." He was about to get up but decided to ask another question. "So you are getting married?"
Caspian looked at Sophie. "Yes."
"Yeah." She nodded. When there was nothing to talk about at that moment, she told Chad that she showed Caspian around. "It felt nice to be back. I've always wondered what Cas would think of London."
"And what do you think, pretty boy?"
Sophie narrowed my eyes at Chad. "Pretty boy?" She mouthed, but he ignored it.
"London is a beautiful city. I'm glad that I was able to see it once."
"You must be really tired then." Chad clapped his hands together. "I'll get the room upstairs ready for you both." He stood up and was heading towards the door behind the counter when he turned around to them. "I have only one pull out." And by 'pull out', he meant a proper bed.
Sophie looked at Caspian. "That....wouldn't be a problem." He said. "We can finally talk freely." He whispered to her.
But could they?
Sophie had never spent an entire night with him. Her heart was beating out of her chest when she thought about their wedding. She was having some serious Nancy and Jonathan flashbacks. Obviously, they wouldn't do that but the whole situation reminded her a lot of it. One thing was for sure. It was going to be a long night.
Chad was the Luke to Sophie's Rory. I would make that comparison even if I don't like her character. He was always so protective over her and when she saw the extra bed that he had set for Caspian and her to sleep on, Sophie only thought about the night that they had met each other. Sophie was forced out of a foster home because they realised that they had made a mistake by deciding to take her in until a proper home could be found for her. She was fed up with all the running. So, she ran away and wandered the streets trying to find a proper place to stay. She could have asked Cassie for help but didn't want to trouble her.
Sophie was armed with a knife - a dagger that she always had with her. She had almost attacked Chad for trying to follow her but it turned out that he was heading to the diner. He started talking to her and that comfort was what she needed. He gave her a place to stay for the night and the next morning, they talked. He told her about his life and how he had travelled the world. Only now did Sophie see that it was because he aged slowly and he had spent years trying to understand the Other World. He told her that she could come to him for help any time that she wanted. Sophie protested, obviously. But he was the closest to family that she had.
Sophie told about her life and when he contacted the foster services two months later, he apologised that he couldn't help her. He was the family that Sophie chose. But Caspian was the family that chose her. He made sure that she was safe in Narnia. He was with her at all times, no matter the highs and the lows. Even if they had the duty of rulers over them, they didn't let it affect them. The last two years had taught Sophie that. They were always there for each other.
Coming back to Caspian.
Sophie and Caspian removed their coats and set them over the desk chair once they entered the room. There was a certain tension in the air but they were too tired to notice it. "Sophie?" She turned around. "Are you okay?"
She walked over to him and pulled him into a hug. "How are you?"
He brushed his fingers through her hair. "I'm thinking about you."
She pulled back just enough to look at him. "I'm thinking about you. Chad told me that he would tell me about my parents in the morning. I'm excited, but a little nervous as well." He was silent, indicating for her to continue. "What if they aren't who I have in mind?"
He kissed her forehead. "All will be answered tomorrow. Right?"
She nodded. "I'm glad that you are here with me. I know how hard this must be for you."
They sat down on the bed, silence surrounding both of them like the darkness in a closed empty room. And to think about the wedding? Sophie shivered. She looked at Caspian and saw him scanning the room. His first instinct was to protect but when he was helpless and his only way out was her, she had to help him. That was when she had an idea. She stood up and rushed to the desk below the television. "What happened?"
Sophie smiled. "There is one more thing that you need to see." She rummaged through the contents of the desk and pulled out the one CD that she was looking for. She knew the room like the back of her hand but Chad had rearranged the furniture. "Ah-ha!" She walked towards the telly that was before the bed and inserted it in the disk provided. "This is one of my favourite movies of all time and if there is one movie that you could watch, I would want it to be this."
"The moving pictures." He realised.
Caspian and Sophie lay on the bed when she hit play. The movie started and she started saying the words along with it. "This is the story of how I died. Don't worry, this is actually a very fun story. And the truth is, it isn't even mine."
He gaped at her. "You know this word to word, don't you?"
"Guilty." An innocent smile spread across her face. "This movie kept me company during the summer. I watched it everyday without getting bored."
He sighed. "This is going to be interesting." They leant back on the bed and lay watching the movie. Sophie was sitting up while Caspian hit the pillows. "We're definitely not following traditions." He whispered to her.
"Nope. Traditions, who?"
He laughed as he sat up to meet her eye. "I've learnt so much about you today. Is that how it was for you....when you came to Narnia?"
When he put it like that, she understood his worry even more. "You were with me, and so was everyone else. I didn't mind it. I wouldn't ask for a redo because everything that has happened so far has made me who I am."
"You wouldn't?"
She shook her head. "Never."
She looked him between the eyes and kissed him. Her hands started to memorise the facets of his face and his fingers held the back of her neck. The heat was rushing to their faces and they sat up straight to not fall directly on the bed, but pulled back quickly when there was a knock at the door. Caspian and Sophie looked at it and then smiled at each other. She walked over to the door and pulled it open to find Chad with two glasses of milk in his hands. "Wanted to give this to you before I hit the sack."
Sophie was in total awe. He remembered her insomnia and had worked out the same remedy as Nina. She took the glasses from him and set them on the table nearby and hugged him. "Thank you, old man. For everything."
He hugged her back and sighed. "Always." He patted her cheek. "You are a champ. Never forget that." Before she got emotional, she told him that he owed her the stories of her parents. "And you owe me yours."
Sophie leant against the door after closing it. She had to push herself from it before she got too emotional. It reminded her too much of the first night that she spent in the diner.
Sophie snuggled up against Caspian and they continued to watch the movie. But just before she felt herself drifting off to sleep just as the movie ended, she felt a brush of hair near her ears and a silent whisper. "Go to sleep, my love. I'll be here when you wake up."
